jubilee including her first appearance moments away from the balcony. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is a special report. here's savannah guthrie and hoda kotb. hi, everybody. good morning, live picture from london as the kickoff events to the queen's platinum jubilee celebration are well under way. >> this is a four-day party by the way, and it's a big one. we're about to see her ma jessty for the first time. she's taking a special trouping of the color salute from buckingham palace. kier simmons has his eye on it all.

kier set the scene for us. >> reporter: i sure do. we've been watching charles and william ride bolt upright in a sea of red and gold on the world famous mile behind me there. i don't know if you can see the procession still headed down to buckingham palace, what a historic moment for a queen making history. what they are doing, hoda, they just held the world famous parade and the parade ground behind us. they are going to buckingham palace now. and i think this is a first, they are going to go and salute the queen on the buckingham palace balcony. what a way to pay respect, a way to salute a queen who has given so much in the past 70 years. three generations, hoda, of royals on display here for this day of history and pomp and pageantry and cheering crowds. but it really is three young royals who have stolen the show because william and kate's

4:22 am
>> we've been waiting for this moment they said it was going to happen at 7:20, right on time the queen is appearing on the balcony. >> i was thinking what must be going through her mind. 70 years ago she was a 26-year-old young lady suddenly thrust into having to take the throne and be queen of england. now she is the longest serving monarch. this is a celebration of her, no small accomplishment. >> i think people were waiting to see how she seems, i don't know but she looks good from this point of view, looking in, taking in the crowd. >> our colleague at cnbc, willeford, who is british and -- what do you think of this moment? >> this is the first time we see her, which is so wonderful to see her looking happy and well.

this is the most formal appearance as the next four days go on, there will be more relaxed moments, including when the people get a bit closer. she'll be able to see how they are and hopefully see how grateful they are to her. this is the formal salute with the military. in an hour and a half we'll see the fly past and it'll be fuller with the public instead of the returning horses. >> later in the day we'll see the queen on the balcony flanked by all the royals, is that right? >> flanked by all the working royals. that's how she worked through it. it won't include prince andrew, harry and meghan. we'll expect to see the other members later in the weekend. she rather masterfully has thread the needle to have as

be here in person. you hear the clip-clop of the horses' hooves. you can almost feel the military pant, it's not that far away from me right now. but the whole atmosphere just kind of envelopes you. when the queen came out on the balcony and you could hear the crowd erupt, it really brought that moment home. what strikes you is not this is a completely different trooping the color, the queen taking the salute on the balcony behind me. the parade, as kier said, coming to her at the age of 96. but also how long she's been in this role, not just as the queen but as a public figure. as a high-ranking member of the royal family, as heir to the throne. her very first solo royal engagement, guys, was at 16 years old. it was on her 16th birthday. and she was out observing the troops, performing that role,

remarkable things she's done essentially as chief diplomat for this country. in the '60s she visited germany at the end of a painful reconciliation process after world war ii, in the '80s she went to china, the first british monarch to go to china and in the '90s she went to russia. that was in the time the rubble of the soviet union. so she has more than this role and as you were talking about earlier, the fact she was thrust into that job in her mid 20s, age 25. back to you guys. >> i actually, as i'm sitting here and reflecting on it. she was not born to be queen. it was her uncle to abdicated to mary american wallace simpson and at that point she became heir to the throne at age 10 and later when her father died unexpectedly, young elizabeth became queen. and as stephanie remarked, you
