welcome back, everyone. we are watching special reports from nbc news. breaking news here in the bay area. reports of an earthquake in the east bay. were getting details right now. this is the seismograph in the newsroom this morning. significant shaking. we're hearing that it was a 4.1 magnitude earthquake centered in the east bay. did you feel it? we are going to jump on twitter right now and let us know if he felt anything. no reports of damage or injury, but a 4.1 rattling people this morning happening within the last few minutes or so. and other top news frisky you this morning. we are outside one of the schools this morning. they're talking to how authorities arrested a student that they say try to recruit other students to take part in legal activity out there. >> reporter: they are talking about averting a mass shooting. the 16-year-old suspect went online two weeks ago to advertise this idea to recruit other students to do a mass shooting here at berkeley high behind me but someone called the cops.

police say after they had the tip about the teenager recruiting other high school students to purchase a pit in a school shooting at berkeley high school that included explosives. officers with a search warrant went to the student's him and they discovered parts to explosives, several knives, and other things to produce additional weapons. they said nothing but why they were tipped off but the teen is arrested until may 30, nine days later, and was allowed to turn himself in. that question came up and last night's school board meeting. >> we were actively price on a daily basis of the whereabouts of this particular individual. and then we were also leaning on the expertise of the police experts. >> it's crazy that we can't really go to school without the fear of getting shot up or not possibly making it back home. it is kind of crazy, but that

we are going to continue with the breaking news developing now. 4.1 magnitude earthquake in the east bay this morning. we are getting reports of people the south bay this morning reportedly feeling it. i did not feel anything here in the newsroom? >> normally in the studio, sometimes if we have it here, we can feel the desk shaking because it's elevated. but do not feel anything here. you can see it here on the seismograph, you can see that it is pretty big. you can barely see it. this when you can see, 4.1 for us this morning. we will continue to monitor that and see what is going on here. some people have been feeling it here from the east bay to the south bay this morning. do we have that person on the phone? >> we are attempting to get someone on the phone from the east bay. one of our writers working from home in the walnut creek area. no doubt they felt it because if we're hearing reports of the south bay as well. that is a significant shaker this morning. it is something to wake you up after 5:00 a.m. this is a look at the seismograph. you can see the shaking that happen we can show you exactly where the epicenter was this morning as we zoom in to the area around the area. and we can see that it was right there in the delta and

so, as we look at some of the nearby faults, we have a couple around the area. and we see this did not happen on one of those major faults, but we have a 4.1. that is a concern as people in the east bay felt that this morning. we are looking at the magnitude of a 4.1 as well as a depth of about 19 kilometers. that is fairly shallow. that can travel quite a distance in terms of the shaking and where it is felt. we have not had any reports this far with any damage, but it is pretty early and exactly what happened around that area, we are's trying to get the situation. it's 7 minute since it happen. if he felt anything and if you had anything fall over, you want to hear about that. we are looking around on social media and send us your

information of what is going on around where you live and let us know what it felt like. what kind of motion you saw and how long it lasted. those of the things we're looking for. we can see the tweets there, waking up and thinking someone is under the bed. just an earthquake. that happened at 5:07. it is rattling a lot of people out of the bed and i guess you do not need coffee at this point. waking up to a 5:00 a.m. earthquake and felt my first earthquake. that is what happened right there right around the pittsburg area. we are getting reports of a lot of people feeling the shaking happening at 5:07. there is the seismograph and look at which areas might be feeling that this morning as we zoom in and show you how that impacted parts of the east bay. a lots of people in social media are reaching out to us. >> big time. i immediately jumped on twitter and tried to sent something out.

pittsburg, california, did he feel it? i love our viewers because immediately jump on as well. sunnyvale, which is interesting, too, because across the bay. a lot of people jumping on. there is nothing like a nice earthquake to start the morning. we are not hearing reports of any damage so far. it is interesting to see people saying that this is the first earthquake they have ever felt in their life. welcome to the bay area. 4.1 is a pretty good shaker there especially if he could feel it all the way across the bay. we should warn you that aftershocks may continue over several days, weeks, months as well, if you are new to the area. shallow quakes are more likely to produce aftershocks as well.

creek nearby the pleasant hill fire station. here it felt like a sudden jolt, which i think was the strongest shake of the quake. then you felt more shaking and it was clear that we just had an earthquake. did not feel like it was that strong. relatively. >> 4.1 is considered light. did anything move like a vase is or anything around the house? >> reporter: yes. the cats took off running. i cannot say -- i cannot say that there is any damage but there was an aluminum can that must have been perched precariously on our recycling container, because somehow it fell on the ground. that was the extent of anything

the house started shaking. it was very quick. it was quick and i have lived here all my life, and i know what earthquakes feel like. it was definitely quick. it was unmistakable. >> being here all your life, is it comparable to other -- i guess, on your scale of 1 to 5, how does it feel for you? >> it is the noise. it is very loud. this is very quick, it was a quick jolt, and where i live, i'm far from pittsburg, from the epicenter. it was just the rattling or the shaking of the chandelier and it was very quick. i am a good distance from there so by the time he got to me, who knows. but it was very quick.

it was felt. it was 4.1 for those people when you wake up, we just spoke with steph adrouny umbrella game. it was not too strong, but are we feeling the aftershock of what happened much larger somewhere else. initially, you think, where was that centered, because that is the best indication to see that there was no damage. 4.1 is enough to rattle folks. we have a look at where it was centered there. it was in the pittsburg area. it was in the pittsburg area. i am looking at the shake map and where people are reporting that they felt it.

it is going over towards fairfield in that area toward the central valley. we are seeing reports of people around brentwood and all the way to the east bay down to pleasanton and dublin. then we had some reports down through san mateo, we had that felt in burlingame and down through sunnyvale. also saratoga and it was definitely widely felt around the bay area. the fault goes to the delta into concord. we had a 5.4 that happened in 1955 and that was the strongest one that was on the fault. it does not typically cause earthquakes but this is fairly significant on this fault. it did cause a death and

damage. we do not have any damage this morning but the could be some aftershocks. do not run out of the building. if you can get under some sturdy furniture, there are aftershocks a could continue. we will continue to monitor this. any delays of public transit because of this? >> we are not seeing any road concerns. bart said they would be checking the lines. this is the precautions a we are taking just to make sure everything is safe along the bart lines. they are inspecting them to

tonya in antioch felt a sharp jolt. across the bay along the peninsula, michelle felt it in hillsboro. irene felt it in south san francisco. it was felt in the mission. lisa felt it in napa. it happened at 5:07 this morning. everyone jumped on social media and we have the luxury to do that now because 4.1 is probably not enough to cause damage, but may be starting the day or the workouts early in the morning, certainly one to wake them up. no doubt. we're not surprised so many people in the east bay are looking at the fault line itself

unreliability. there now reportedly not cooperating with investigators. and it is 5:39 right now. we are following breaking news. the 4.1 earthquake being felt throughout the bay area. this happened just after 5:00 this morning at about 5:07. you can see right here that a lot of people are on twitter reacting to that. i knew i felt the earthquake. you said that a lot of people are commenting about what they felt. one man said that his family did not feel a thing. they were snoring asleep. but he said that he felt it. that was over in twin peaks. >> we are looking at where it was centered in the pittsburg area. it was on the concord green valley fault line. that was more of a shallow earthquake the what we see sometimes with some of these

quakes on the concord green valley fault. the last one we had on this fault was a long time ago. on october 23. that was a 5.4. that did cause a death and unknown injuries. you can see how when you go up with the strength of the earthquake, how much more damage it could cause. we have not had any reports of damage. hopefully we will not see any shaking. it is possible there could be some aftershocks see want to make sure that you do not run out of the building when you start to feel the shaking. there could be a fall and debris hazard as well. this is a time to look around your house and say, is everything in here secure or could i do better in here? if you are in the middle of an earthquake, the interior walls are best. always are not necessarily the safest. you want to get under some
