4:30 am
right now at 4:30, mandatory masks returning to one bay area county. we're going to talk you through this. will it help? and will the rest of the bay area follow suit? >> the fact that virus continues to shape shift kind of puts us in a lurch when it comes to infection. >> the latest covid surge adding new uncertainty as summer approaches. hear from one local health expert on why he thinks that the pandemic will remain less severe compared to previous years. >> and demanding congress take
4:31 am
action. president biden's new proposal to help put an end to gun violence. and a good morning to you on this friday. we've got laura, kari, the gang is here morning as we get started with your friday. meteorologist kari hall is here. >> we have fog over san francisco. don't expect to see sunshine here. it is going to be a cloudy and cool weekend. we are headed for 64 degrees. for the inland area, much more comfortable as we get a slight cooldown compared to yesterday and the rest of this week. we have 75 in livermore and napa. tomorrow, parts of the north bay could see some spotty light
4:32 am
showers as the temperatures only head toed mid-70s. we'll here breezy wind, partly sunny skies and nice weather for the weekend. we're also watching out for a chance of rain. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you, kari. >> masks in alameda county? they may return indoors. there are some exceptions. masking will not be required in schools and this mandate does not apply in berkeley because it has its own independent health department. >> we are hoping to keep it in place as short a time as possible. we really just want to see that we're getting through the peak of this wave which has been pretty relentless. a lot of covid is circulating right now. and then we are hoping to lift it. >> covid hospitalizations in
4:33 am
alameda county has doubled over the past month. 43 on august. this past mon, 102. for perspective, the county averaged more than 450 hospitalizations during the winter months. >> now, i spoke with ucf infectious specialist dr. peter chin-hong. should we be alarmed? >> there is good news and bad news. the bad news front, it is keeping a lot of disruptions, people are taking off to take care of people who are ill. students have finals, graduations and some of those are being disrupted. on the good news front, the hospitals are generally pretty quiet and that's a testament of the high rate of vaccination and boosting in the bay area. >> you mentioned graduations and things. that's what's going on right
4:34 am
now. graduations, memorial day just passed. 4th of july coming up not too far away. a lot of people want to get out and have fun and be around other people. can we expect a spike? think about it when the we were back in november, we saw the spike with the holidays and beginning of the year, we saw that spike. should we expect any spikes like that again? >> i think that so many people have been infected recently, we will see an increase in cases but hopefully, it won't be an exponential rise. i think that you're right. memorial day, all those gatherings that occurred will come back over the next few days. we will no doubt see an increased in hospitalization. >> you don't hear people talking about herd immunity now. are we close to that or is that still a factor? >> i think that's less of a factor because the virus has evolved so quickly that it took a lot of people by surprise. you know, if it was the same
4:35 am
virus from 2020 to now, we would have definitely achieved herd immunity. but the fact that virus continues to shape shift kind of puts us in a lurch when it comes to infection. however, that herd immunity is keeping us away from the hospitals and that will continue to hopefully be the case as we get these successive waves. >> do we know anything from those who have not gotten covid at this point? >> that's a great question. studies are ongoing. there are people who seem to be more resistant. men are more likely to be infected than women but these are really crude metrics and i think that we have to go deeper to the genetic level. we know in other disease states, even hiv, there are people who are more resistant and it's likely that's going to be the case as well with covid. we just don't have that information yet.
4:36 am
we can't give advice to people, you know, that you can be a little more risky than somebody else because we just don't know. in other news, president biden is demanding congress to take action and help end gun violence. he outlined some plans, including raising the age to get guns to 21, repeal the protection against gun manufacturers. he says he is not going after lawful gun owners. and test la ceo elon musk is sounding the alarm on the
