19 children and children killed in uvalde and now, this week, four people killed in a tulsa hospital. president biden is renewing pleas for congress to act for action. in a rare evening briefing, he stressed that enough is enough. >> that's absolutely right. good morning, laura. president biden speaking directly to the american people and laying out specific actions he wants congress to take on gun laws. >> how much more carnage are we willing to accept? how many more innocent american lives must be taken before we say enough, enough. >> reporter: the president laying out specific actions ranging from strengthening background checks to banning assault weapons or at least raising the age to purchase them from 18 to 21. also, arguing that this issue is not about taking away second amendment rights.

78 in san jose. losgados reaching the 70s. oakland reaching 71. i even think that it will be raining lightly in san francisco with upper 60s. this is the system that's approaching as we are seeing a lot of clouds and a lot of moisture, too as it moves in, at least it temporarily reduces our shower threats. it's going to be limited in where it falls. received once again, we're really star getting the north bay. i'm not expecting any of this to make it down to san jose but it will be cloudy as well but definitely much cooler as we take a look at how much rain we could see, maybe a few hundredths inches. livermore, possibly up to a tenth inch of rain which means

you can turn off of the sprinkler temporarily for a while. as we head through the next ten days, san jose will see the temperatures going from the upper 70s to the upper 80s and then low 90s. so i'm not ready for that. we're going to see some hotter weather next week. mid-70s throughout the weekend with mostly sunny skies and it will be heating up next week and we'll turn our air conditioners back on. vianey, any problems right now, letting out? >> i am seeing a couple of reports popping up on the chp traffic page. let's take a look at the senate yo bridge. you can see the headlights and taillights there. as i take you to the map, you can see a umm can have issues now. a crash approaching 580 along the westbound lanes. you can see a little bit of that yellow and red causing some slowing. tri valley drive times right

now, westbound i-80 near grambling road, which is where that crash is, about ten minutes to vargas road. bridge drive time, towards the bay bridge, about 7 minutes. a quick look at the chp it traffic report shows that there may be a crash being reported along the westbound 80 side, right near just east of the scales. it looks like they're bringing in a patrol car to possibly create a break in traffic. there is a right lane being blocked right now. we'll definitely look into that to see what sort of impact we are seeing right now. drive times right now looking okay. i'll give you an update on that crash near the scales coming up in just a few minutes. >> sounds good. we'll check back with you. coming up next on today on the bay, nbc bay area responds. >> we have a milestone to tell you about and our very first slot machine complaints but it

there is a fire burning on the san bruno mountains. a viewer sent us this video. our crew arrived on scene and they say that fire is still burning about halfway up the mountain. nearby roads are shut down so avoid that area but there is said to be no impact on nearby highway 101. still not clear how it started. 5:32. covid cases across the state still heading higher as you can see from this graph. on may 15th, the positivity rate was 5%. two weeks later, the positivity rate is under 8%. covid cases also continue to rise as we approach the summer months. i to ucsf infectious disease specialist peter chin- hong about the possibility. >> there is good news and bad

news. bad news is that people are keeping out of the workforce, people taking off to take care of ill people. students takes finals and graduations being disrupted. >> graduations, memorial day just passed, 4th of july coming up not too far away. a lot of people want to get out and have fun and be around people. can we expect a spike because, you know, think about it. when we were back in november, we saw the spike with the holidays and then beginning of the year, we saw that spike. should we expect any spikes like that again? >> i think so many people have been infected recently. we will see an increase in cases but hopefully, it won't be an exponential rise. i think that you're right.

memorial day, all those gatherings that occurred over the last weekend will come back in the next few days. we will undoubtedly see an increase in hospitalizations but nothing compared to january. >> you don't hear too many people talk about herd immunity now. are we close to that or is that still a factor? >> i think that's less of a factor now because the virus has evolved so quickly that it took a lot of people by surprise. if it was the same virus from 2020 to now, we would have definitely achieved herd immunity but the fact that the virus continues to shape shift, that continues to put us in a lurch. but hopefully that will be less

hospitalization. >> have we heard anything about people who do not get covid. >> that's a good question. we know that men are infecting more than women but that's crude metrics. we know in other disease states, even hiv, there are people who list resistant. we don't have that information yet and we can't give advice to people to say you can be a little bit more risky than somebody else because we just don't know. >> so interesting what they will learn from all of that. five 35 right now. record prices at the gas pump, have you noticed them lately, putting more pressure on those struggling just to make it in the bay. with so many struggling with skyrocketing inflation. we are paying 15% more in gas. i would like to hope there is relief in sight. >> reporter: good morning, we

are looking for bit of relief but if you have driven any part of the bay in the last couple of weeks, you notice the prices continue to rise. right now, we are at the valero in san bruno where it looks like gas is 6.99 a gallon. i have only seen one gas station son somo and 4th that is higher than that. but 6.99 is what people can expect to pay here. according to both gas buddy and aaa, this is above the state average of 6.24. that average of 6.24, is it expected to stay? that is the question right now as nationwide gas prices have increased 52 cents just this month. right now, aaa says that national average is still above the state average but as of thursday, national average is 4.71 compared to the state average of 6.24.

average of 6.50 in san francisco. there are a few factors contributing to the lack of falling prices. major one, experts at gas buddy say that ongoing conflict in ukraine continues to keep prices high because supply is down. with many folks wanting to hit the road for summer vacation, the relief may not be soon happening. >> i think we'll probably see 6.50 a gallon for an average here in the next week or so and prices could continue to march of higher. it's not impossible that, should we see a major refinery fire or a hurricane, the gas price cost reach 7 here a gallon. >> that's not what we want to hear. more costs will be added. the state will be it tacking on an extra 3 cents tax. that factor combined with the overall supply and demand dynamics for gas during the travel season will have prices

as is, if not higher for the foreseeable future. it's not just gas but the cost of food is also increasing. monthly increase for meals, poultry, fish and eggs was 1.4% in march but category increased by more than 14% over the last 12 months. a new poll shows that half of americans don't believe that they can afford a vacation this year because of inflation. a lot of folks really crunching the numbers and seeing what they are able to do. with prices like this, 6.99, people are rethinking some of their plans as that survey reveals. live in san bruno, cierra johnson. >> that's hard because people want to emerge out of the pandemic but, boy, you have tighten it up. thanks. developing this morning, authorities have now identified four people killed in the shooting rampage at a tulsa hospital. two doctors, a receptionist and a waiting room patient all died

wednesday. the gunman purchased a semiautomatic rifle from a gun store hours before the shooting and carried a recently purchased hand gun. they say he was targeting one of the doctors who was his surgeon. the gunman had recently undergone back surgery and killed himself as officers moved in. a new claim suggests that there was major disconnect during the police response to the tax school shooting rampage. >> the commander at the scene never knew about the 911 calls being made from inside the classroom where 21 people died. he called it a system failure suggesting that the call went to city police and never was communicated to the school police chief. police waited to confront the gunman because they believed that the situation had more from an active shooter to a barricade situation. now more on the progress to the fire line in napa county. this is the so-called old fire.

this. i never got to work on price is right. >> like old school barker's beauty. let's get to the showcase showdown with that weather. >> i think that san francisco likes donuts because they have sprinkles going on right now as we take a look at this fog rolling across the city. maybe misting. we are going for 24 degrees. that's the kind of weather we'll see all weekend long. 70s for highs today and going into tomorrow, mostly cloudy, breezy and reaching into the upper 70s for livermore and san jose. more of the same on sunday but we are also going to be watching for some off and on rain for part of the north bay throughout the weekend. we'll watch to see what's going on with this tropical system. this was a hurricane that was over the pacific, moving across mexico and now it is emerging closer to the gulf and may be targeting florida. we'll see the headlines on that. hopefully everything works out okay. we're also going to see some rain moving into the bay area

this weekend and, yes, if you do have some outdoors plans, you might want to keep an eye on how the radar looks because we can see this rain moving into the north bay late saturday into sunday with mostly north bay showers and along the coast line. this is pretty significant for this month, the possibility of getting 1/10 inch of rain or more. we'll watch out for that. then we head out to dry and warm weather, really heating up for the inland area by the end of next week. vianey, where is it slowing down around the bay area? >> the tri valley tends to be one of those spots but i have a little bit of slowing down as you approach the bay bridge. the reason for that, there was an earlier crash causing delays. you can see the yellow on the speed sensors. no metering lights on, which is good. you are looking at nine minutes

is 5:59, and new developments in the monkeypox outbreak, ellie county now reporting is for suspected case. health leaders are awaiting final coffin but the patient is an adult who recently traveled and had a known close contacts. they are symptomatic but not hospitalized. to close contacts of that original patient contracted the disease, monkeypox, most easily identified by a severe and distinctive rash. >> a fire burning on san bruno mountain, video just into our newsroom. we are also talking to firefighters, they've got an update on the conditions. a rise in covid occasions asking one county to mask up once again.
