6:20 am
eureka could see over an inch of rain with this moving in but by the time it makes it to, it'll be much lighter in comparison and it moves down to santa rosa and napa late saturday night and sunday we will see rain chances and it may reach down oakland, a couple of spotty light sprinkles around hayward and redwood city. but we are also going to see the rain just kind of dissipate before it makes it into the southbay. we are not expecting much here but as far as how much rain we can see, possibly a tenth of an inch of rain for concord, oakland as well as san francisco, and it could be even higher, take a look, reaching three quarters of an inch of rain, that would be amazing for that to happen in june. but then, once we enjoy a cooler weekend and the rain chances quickly start to heat back up again, we are headed for the upper 80s for san jose by the end of next week
6:21 am
possibly even low 90s by next friday, so we are going straight to summer here with the heat and we will see those temperatures in the mid-70s for the weekend, spotty showers are possible for the inland areas on sunday, and once again, very hot next week and staying cool, foggy and kind of drizzly in san francisco throughout the weekend. vianey, anything popping up for the commute? >> we do have a new crash that popped up . this is a long 580 in the westbound direction, right before the 680 interchange, so, you could expect to see some delays through the stretch, also, good news as far as we approach heading into the bay bridge, no metering lights on just yet and a quick check of your drive times, north on 101 from 85, looking at 19 minutes. no major delays along 284 or 85. back to you. coming up next on today in the bay, nbc bay area response. >> we have a milestone to tell you about, and our very first slot machine complaint. but it does not involve a casino. nbc bay area response, next.

>> we want to get straight to the breaking news this morning, the breaking news is the fire, on san bruno mountain, near south san francisco and the brisbane border, this is video from our crew, now the fire, burning about halfway up the mountain, it's spread to at least three acres this morning, but firefighters on the scene tell us that the conditions are helping to slow down the spread of the flames. viewer santas videos like this one, shortly after the fire started this morning, nearby roads are shut down but there's no impact on highway 101, still not clear how the fire started. >> let's check in with meterologist kari hall, she's tracking some of the conditions in the area. firefighters are saying the mist is helping. >> can you imagine how hard it is to see what's going on out there as you are trying to fight the fire? and the vegetation, it's very dry even though we are seeing the fog and midst as well as

6:33 am
pay in the bay area. seeing as the average in the area is a little bit lower, but nationwide, prices continue to rise, $.52 a gallon just this month, right now aaa says the national average is still below the state average but again, on the rise, as of thursday, the national average, $4.71 compared to the state average of $6.24 and an average of $6.50 in san francisco but there are several factors that experts say tribute to a lack of falling prices, a major one, experts say the ongoing conflict in ukraine helped to keep prices high because supply is down. and with many folks wanting to hit the road this summer for the summer vacations, relief may not be happening anytime soon. >> i think we probably will see $6.50 a gallon on average for the next week or so and prices could march higher, it's not impossible, that the average in
6:34 am
san francisco could reach seven dollars a gallon. >> it's important to note that come july first, many more costs will be added to your trip to the gas station, that's when the state is tacking on an extra three set tax onto every purchase, that combined with the supply and demand dynamics, during the trump summer travel season, will have gas higher than what we see right now. it's not just gas, the cost of food is also increasing, if you've noticed the increase for meats, poultry, eggs, was 1.4%
6:35 am
from march but the category has increased by more than 14% in just over the last year. and a new poll does reveal the spending habits and thoughts of some of us here in the united states, over half of americans, 56%, say they don't believe they can afford a vacation this year, because of inflation, so a lot of factors at play, a lot of folks really just waiting to get on the road and just kind of unwind and relax but for so many, that may not be possible because of what we are seeing in terms of gas as well as inflation. >> $7.19, that is really tough. thanks so much. let's talk about covid. covid cases across the state are still heading higher, as you can see from this graph, on may 15, the positivity rate was 5%, a little more than two weeks later, the positivity rate, just under 8%. and across the bay, covid cases continue to rise as we approach the summer months. i spoke with dr. peter chin- hong, to find out if we should be alarmed. >> there's good news and bad news about the current search.
6:36 am
i think on the bad news front, it's leading to disruptions, people are taken out of the workforce, students have finals , some of those are being disrupted, but on the good news front, hospitals are generally pretty quiet, and that's really a testament to the high rates of vaccination and boosting that is in the bay area. >> i want to talk to you about this because you just mentioned graduations and things. that's what's going on now, graduations, memorial day just passed, fourth of july coming up not too far away. a lot of people want to get out and have fun and be around people. can we expect a spike? think about it, when we were back in november, we saw the spike with the holidays, and the beginning of the year we saw the spike should we expect any spikes like that again? >> i think so many people have been infected recently, we will see an increase in cases but hopefully it won't be an
6:37 am
exponential rise. i think you're right, memorial day, all those gatherings that occurred over the last weekend, i probably going to come back in the next few days. we will undoubtedly see an increase in hospitalizations but nothing compared to january. >> we don't hear too many people talk about herd immunity, so are we close to that or is that still a factor? >> i think it's less of a factor now because the virus has evolved so quickly, that it took a lot of people by surprise. i think if it was the same virus from 20 2010 now, we would have definitely achieved herd immunity but the fact that the virus continues to shape shift, kind of puts us in a lurch when it comes to infection however, that herd immunity is keeping us away from the hospital, and that will continue to hopefully be the case as we get the successive waves. >> there's good news for you,

more houses are on the market in the bay area, the bad news, the prices are still rising. >> not if you are a homeowner. >> prices increase by 32% in the east bay and it went up 22.9% in the south bay. the reason prices are still soaring, there's just not enough for everyone who's looking to buy. contributing to that, building new housing. during the year-long investigation, they uncovered hundreds of empty lots that are supposed to be new, affordable housing their staying vacant, waiting for state funding. candace spoke to frustrated developers and got answers from

the state treasurer. >> this is supposed to be g, and so is this, and this, and this. and all of these. projects funded in part, with your tax dollars. your sitting vacant. >> candace joins us live in studio to talk about episode three of the series called hidden housing. so, it looked like there were a lot of empty lots and stalled construction projects here? >> a lot of them, and the fact that there's one, that's too many, california needs more housing and we needed it yesterday. last year there housing nonprofit identified 214 shovel ready, shovel ready affordable housing prices in the bay area that haven't even started yet. we drove out to the site, we found the vacant lots.
6:40 am
if built could provide 19,000 homes, that would house a good number of the bay area's entire housing insecure population. >> so what is the hold up here? >> we brought that question to the top to the california state treasurer, and put simply she says, there's not enough money to go around and the thing is, affordable housing can't just take money from anywhere, this kind of construction needs specific state funding and we heard from the governor that there's billions in surplus money, so a lot of eyes to his office to see if that money will go to housing. >> even if you don't necessarily need to live in one of these low income units, it certainly does impact so many people. >> if there's one thing i learned while working on the series is that this crisis impacts all of us in some way. political leaders have pledged to spend the public taxpayer dollars wisely to create more housing and this was an important area for us to investigate to see if they were keeping their promises and we found some of the promises have been adjusted. you can watch all of the episodes of overpriced, overwhelmed, over it on your roku, amazon fire tv or apple tv by downloading the free nbc bay area app you can also go to

the proposed legislation wouldn't take their guns and in the side of the time, the democrats inability to get lost, this dismissed the new ban on the assault weapons the minute he brought it up. >> we need to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. if we can't ban assault weapons, we should raise the age to purchase them. from 18 to 21. strengthen the background checks, and enact red flag laws. >> a group of senators from both sides of the aisle are meeting mostly on zoom, working on for issues, better mental health care, remember texas cut mental health care, better security for schools, expanding background checks and encouraging states to pass red flag laws that would allow courts to temporarily seize guns from people who may be planning an attack. the today show will have much more.

those are right now the moderate changes that are being discussed but again, our sources tell us they have a framework right now that might be enough for them to all come back to washington next week and actually have a real debate on what to do here. >> uncontrolled supporters will need 60 votes in the senate, 10 republicans and other words plus democrat joe mansion to get anything past, while polls show an overwhelming number of americans want washington to do something. washington has not done something, and if we are being realistic, it probably won't, you body, texas, is one of a string of shootings, there have been three mass shootings since you've all >>, the latest was outside and iowa church. the labor department reported 300,000 jobs in may, the unemployment rate stands at 3.6%. we were hoping to see 3 1/2, that would have been the lowest since the start of the pandemic but overall, this has been
