"early today" starts right now >> good monday morning i'm phillip mena. >> glad you're with us i'm frances rivera we begin with another weekend of mass shootings across america. video captured the moment shots were fired into a crowd in philadelphia, sending hundreds of people into a panic three people were killed and 12 others were injured. police believe the attack started with a street fight and that there were multiple shooters >> we know ballistically that we had at least five different guns outside there. all right, now that's not including the police officer that returned fire with somebody so there is five different guns. we've recovered two. >> the suspects fled without being identified, and it is not clear if anyone was hit by the rounds fired by police three people were also killed early sunday morning outside of a nightclub in chattanooga, tennessee two were killed by gunfire a third died as they were trying

to run away and were hit by a car. in total, 14 people were shot, and two others struck by cars. >> these four people were killed in two shootings in michigan this weekend one in saginaw, and another one in downtown grand rapids and in south carolina, police say a woman was killed and seven other people were hurt at a graduation party six of the victims were children, the youngest is 12 years old. according to the gun violence archive, which is a group that tracks mass shootings, there were 11 mass shootings that occurred this weekend across eight states. 15 lives were lost in the incidents. >> congress returns to session today with a potential bipartisan deal in its sights. a bipartisan group of senators began hammering out legislation in the wake of the mass shootings in buffalo and uvalde. senator chris murphy is leading the charge he said the bill would not include an assault weapons ban or comprehensive background checks, instead focusing on investments in mental health and new red flag laws and more

security funding >> i've never been part of negotiations this serious. they're talking about laws and investing in mental health at any time since sandy hook. i think the possibility of success is better than ever before, but i think the consequences of failure for our entire democracy are more significant than ever. >> i think encouraging states to have some kind of red flag laws could make sense, as long as there is adequate due process. >> according to a new 70% say enacting stricter gun laws should be a higher priority than protecting the right to own guns breaking overnight, the u.s. and south korea joined forces early this morning, firing eight missiles in response to launches made by north korea. on sunday, north korea fired eight ballistic missiles off the east coast and was likely the country's single largest test.

nbc's janis mackey frayer joining us from beijing for more on all of this ja janis, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. u.s. forces in korea confirmed that early this morning, firing eight missiles towards the east sea. one of them was a u.s. army missile as a response to north korea's latest test. in a statement, usfk said the combined drill was meant to show the ability of combined forces to, quote, respond quickly to crisis events. but the pace of these launches, we're talking 16 missiles over 24 hours is ramping up tension in the region. north korea fired eight ballistic missiles from multiple locations over 35 minutes toward the sea of japan, according to officials. believed to be a single day record for ballistic launches. it's the 18th round of tests by north korea so far this year and there is the wide expectation and concern that kim jong-un is preparing for another

nuclear test philip >> janis, i want to pivot to the war in ukraine russia's minister says it has destroyed tanks in kyiv supplied by eastern european countries. tell us more >> ukrainian forces are said to be in control of large parts of the kyiv city in the eastern part of the country. russian forces have been concentrating on the city of severodonetsk. and according to governor's statements there, they're saying that that russian bid is now faltering. the concern of course is there are hundreds of people believed to be trapped in bomb shelters under the chemical factory there with heavy street fighting continuing and both sides now claiming gains russia has said that it has destroyed the tanks that were sent to ukraine by its allies, but there seems to be more weapon promises on the way the uk has confirmed that it's sending rocket systems to ukraine meant to hit targets up

to 50 miles away similar to the rocket systems that were pledged by the u.s. last week. philip >> two major international stories. janis, thank you for the updates. pumped up gas prices are throwing a wrench in summer plans, forcing millions of americans to rethink their travel according to aaa, the national average is now $4.84 per gallon. nbc's jesse kirch has more on what's driving this fuel frenzy. >> reporter: americans' gas price headaches are getting worse again. >> i never thought i wouldn't be able to go visit my kids because of gas and airplane price, you know it's really sad. >> reporter: according to aaa, the national average for a gallon of regular hit another all-time record high, $4.82. just look at this graph. the price of gas in the past four days suddenly spiking even faster, up 20 cents with an unprecedented $5 a gallon national average on the horizon. >> i think a lot of it is because inventories every week are getting smaller. and the market is growing more

higher unknown attackers stormed a catholic church on sunday, opening fire on worshipers and detonating explosives. several children are among the dead nigeria's president promised to hunt down the assailants now to a fire disaster in bangladesh, where fire crews are working a second day to put out a massive blaze at a container depot that killed at least 49 people and injured more than 200. the blaze started on saturday in the town of sikunda, where chemical-filled containers began exploding. officials say five firefighters are among the dead along with ten police officers who were also injured the cause of the fire is unclear. an exhibit honoring breonna taylor opened up in louisville on what would have been her 29th birthday breanna's garden xrx welcomed visitors it aims to provide more facts about taylor's life, not just about her death. taylor was shot and killed by police, executing a no-knock warrant in march of 20 between

that exhibit runs through september 3rd. let's turn now to meteorologist michelle grossman with a look at how the morning is shaping up. hi, michelle, good morning >> good morning. happy monday we are looking at showers and storms today two areas that we're watching with $6 million under the gun for the showers and storms could see some heavy rain and also severe weather the first spot we are looking at, all the way down to memphis, the tennessee valley and then further to the west, we're looking at areas from gillette to north platte to dodge city we're looking at $6 million at risk winds gusting to 60 miles per hour damaging hail up to an inch. and we're looking at an isolated tornado as well. as we go throughout tomorrow, we're looking at that bulls-eye from lamar down to amarillo in the panhandle of texas and we're looking at 2-inch hail winds gusting to 60 miles per hour could see a few tornadoes as well. a big story will see the rain. it will be heavy at times where you see the darker colors, the yellows, the reds, the oranges totals up to 4 inches. so we're going to be watching that very closely.
