>> and i'm marcus washington. let's look at that forecast. it will be a hot one today. it will start to heat up for some areas. comfortable near the coast and parts of the interbay. as we look at san jose as we start out with a clear sky this morning. not bad at all. a few more clouds in the mix as we go into the late morning and afternoon. we are staying mostly in the upper 70s. briefly hitting 80 degrees here. it will start to crank up the heat in fairfield when you compare that to 68 in san francisco and 81 in novato. some spots are really getting hot and getting even hotter for the end of the week. we will talk more about that, coming up in a few minutes. it is 5:01 now. the primary election is here. polls open in just about two hours. voters in seven cisco are deciding if the district attorney should stay or go. chesa boudin is facing a recall.

all of these lines have changed. remember, each congressional district is supposed have the same number of people in it. that is why san francisco apostrophes congressional district is so small. has a lot of people in it. that is nancy pelosi's district. an area with a less dense concentration of people like here in the south bay, those are bigger. the borders on many districts have moved, in some cases, by a lot. take a look at this in the south bay and into morgan hill. look how much more area they will pick up with the new 18th district. it is a cost of jimmy panetta, who loses a lot of area. some people who for years were represented by him will see the challengers on the primary instead. these are the new maps.'s also take a look at the peninsula. the old map, and on the new map, picking up all sorts of

our website. we put all that information on the candidates and races. we will see the qr code again in just a moment's that you have a chance to get out your phone. it is 5:05 now. in developing story out of the south bay. a shooting inside a hillview library that left families inside scrambling for safety. happened at 3:30 yesterday afternoon. police say two suspects chased another inside and then shot them. no one else was hits but investigators say that there appears to be gang related because what the men were shouting beforehand. there were about 20 witnesses inside, most of them schoolchildren. >> i was scared. especially now that we have a lot of news regarding school shootings. i never thought that would happen to us. especially my kids. >> that is so scary especially around this time. >> the victims were taken to the hospital with non-life- threatening hit injuries. the police is looking for the suspects. no suspect description was

a group of high tech companies including salesforce and google have written a letter to washington urging them to make it easier for the children of high tech workers to stay in america. right now workers here on h1 b skills visas cannot extend the visa detection to the children past the age of 21 which means a kid who grew up here in the bay area and went to elementary school here and played little league and the regular american things that a kid might do, would have to go back to the home country when they turn 21 because they're not the ones with the worker visa. the mom or the dad does. they can apply for permanent residency but the high tech companies are asking immigration to make it easier for young adults to stay. the worst case, the company says, the whole family, including the worker, leave when the kid turns 21 making a shortage of workers in the country. elon musk threatens again to leave the deal. mosque claims that twitter has not given enough information

welcome back it is 5:44. if you have gotten a threatening phone call from someone claiming to be a government agency, the chances are it was a scam. the so-called imposter scams resulted in $445 million in lawsuits since 2020. one in five of us have believed someone claiming to be from the government resulting in an average loss of $3000. >> government agencies are not going to call you. they are not going to send you text messages asking for money or threatening you. unfortunate, that is what we have been seeing. if you have a government letter, you have to the seal of that specific agency. most of them are very visible. you can see exactly what it looks like.

temperatures have dropped to 48 degrees and we will see a mix of sun and clouds for late morning into early in the afternoon. we will see a wide range of temperatures from the mid-60s in half moon bay. mid 70s for oakland reaching into the mid-80s. 90s in fairfield today. san jose will reach 80 degrees. a lot of places are still comfortable with the valleys will be focused on it, especially as we head toward the end of the week and the temperatures continue to get even higher. i will have more on that in the forecast. it is coming up in a few minutes. we will look forward to that. it is 5:31. two deadly shootings in the east bay. the first happened at 11:30 last night and foothill boulevard in oakland. one person died at the scene. the other person was taken to the hospital. the second shooting happened just after midnight at a home.

police say they did not have a suspect in custody in either case. the primary election is here. last-minute campaigning is taking place across the bay area. for the first time in more than 20 years, there is no incumbent running for the sheriff in santa clara county. the current sheriff has decided not to seek reelection. among those running, kevin jensen is a retired 20 year veteran. two other candidates and team supervisor. a 32 year veteran who has criticized the department for what he says is the tolerance of discrimination and misconduct. this supervisor sergeant is a 20 year deputy and army veteran with what she says is a unique perspective on changing hiring policies. also that race, palo alto chief

robert johnson who spent 27 years in los angeles county sheriff's office and was the menlo park police chief. this emphasis on cleaning up the processes and being more transparent and involving the community and being more responsive to the community concerns, all of that is responding to that criticism that is there in the background. >> we do not hear back from the final candidates who listed herself as a mother. voters in the south bay will be dropping off and filling out the ballots. it is going to be a busy day for you.

proposed. the is accused of defrauding investors. back in january, they found them guilty on four fraud related charges. she set to be sentenced in the fall. happening to the suspect to the kidnapping of a santa fe three-month-old baby will be in court. they will face a judge for a hearing this afternoon. they were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a 3-month-old back in april. that motive is still under investigation. developing now, the cdc raising the alert level for monkeypox to level 2. the number of cases of monkeypox have increased to almost 1000 people without a confirmed or

suspected cases worldwide. this is largest outbreak for the virus outside of africa in decades. the san francisco department of public health reported the first probable case. the cdc is recommending that travelers wear a mask on planes and other public transit. >> we know that you can get it from skin to skin contact, specifically if there is an open sore, but you can also get the respiratory route. >> health officials say that monkeypox traditionally spreads to close prolonged contact with an infected person, most often through sexual contact. we have more on the overnight brush fire burning in the north bay. we have a live look at the scene near dominican university. it happened near deer park avenue. firefighters say it is under control. two crews remained on scene and are watching for any hotspots out there. the fire broke out late last night. this was just before 10:00 p.m.

you can see the smoke of the time-lapse video. residents were evacuated, but they have been allowed to return back to homes. firefighters say that even after a bit of rain this weekend, the dry conditions are causing concerns all year long. >> associate that the fire season is year-round. if you look behind you can see the vegetation is dry. this is very old. there is dead and damaged material on the ground. that is what is burning right now. it shows you that even a few inches of rain, 24 hours later, we have a very serious fire. >> the cause is still under investigation. we are joined now. she has been tracking the forecast.

i don't think we will see more rain in the forecast. we are getting ready for a heat up for the inland area. we are starting out with high humidity and cool temperatures. we can see the fog rolling across the coast and near the golden gate bridge. are temperature this morning in the upper 40s in sonoma. low 50s for fremont and 54 in san mateo. looking at the range in temperatures across the bay area today, novato reaching 81 degrees. a high of 80 in san jose. we are staying in the 60s for most of the coastline and the peninsula. we've been talking about the valley temperatures really ramping up over the next few days. we will take a look at that forecast, coming up in a few minutes. any new problems popping up in the morning commute? yes, there is. southbound 101 has some cones. i do not know if it is traffic control, but some hit the cones and it is hard to pick them up. a couple traffic issues going on right now. those are pretty typical areas where we might see the slowing.

reports of a disabled vehicle in a crash just north of willow. folks are heading to the scene right now. the traffic is light and potential will track this right of the bay bridge. happening today, accused of hitting and killing a man while driving drunk will face a judge. he set to be arraigned. is being charged with fatally striking his neighbor while driving drunk. he was walking on the sidewalk with his wife when he was hit from behind. the defrocked catholic priest is a registered sex offender and is accused of molesting dozens of children. it is 5:25. walnut creek is considering a new gun ordinance to keep guns locked in your home.

they will it into creating an ordinance requiring gun owners to safely store firearms in their home. the owner would need to star firearms in a lockbox with trigger locks. the goal is to reduce the risk of firearm deaths and industry injuries among children. other areas have similar ordinances in place. it is 5:45. the white house may delay an announcement of forgiving student loans until july or august. that sounds like a when and not if. >> any doubt we had six months ago is gone. the federal government, we are pretty sure, will forgive student loans. candidates promise to forgive the first $10,000 in loans but the talk is that it will not be enough and that might be part of the delay in announcing loan forgiveness. the "wall street journal" is the first to report the delay. some in the white house pushing for as much as $50,000 forgiveness. the other detail that very much

interest us here in the bay area is if there will be a cap to the forgiveness based on earning. generally speaking, we make a lot more money here the bay area than a family in kansas. we also pay $3.00 more per gas and $1 million more for a house. they could be that people the bay area who budget just as hard will not see any loan forgiveness at all. a big group of students protested in washington for gun control. some more bulletproof vest. they were joined by congressman chris murphy, the lead negotiator for democrats, as new restrictions make their way through the senate. murphy said that congress is in a put up or shut up moment. the governor of tennessee signing an executive order to further secure schools as a way of hopefully preventing the next shooting. the right, the governor of new york signing a bill into law that further restricts guns. including raising the age to buy an assault weapon to 21. the gunman in the uvalde

purchased a gun when he turned 18. they'll use ar 15 style weapons. today is election day. the number of members of congress in the bay area and california are on the ballot in the primaries. the generals in november but the member of congress that you voted for or against in the past might not be the person you see on the ballot. we will explain why, coming up at 6:00. and we are on social media. a social media challenge leaves a mailman shaken. take a look at this. this is the pellet gun that police say a 16-year-old boy used to shoot a mailman in mountain view. he drove up next to the mailman and shot him with a pellet gun. thankfully he was not hurt. it is part of what is being caused a challenge on social media. and encourages people to sneak up on unsuspecting people.

hotter and this is for the inland area. the coastal areas will stay mild in the upper 60s tomorrow for half moon bay. as you head up to napa, it is 85 degrees. we will see at high tomorrow of 86 degrees in concord. check out fairfield on thursday. 99 degrees and that is not even the hottest day of the week. as we head toward friday, that is when we see the temperatures peaking and then heading back down for the weekend. we are still looking at arrange in temperatures. it is not heating up that much in san francisco. does the valley set we will have to watch as the strong area of high pressure builds just off to the ease. to shifting the wind direction but there is just enough of an ocean breeze to keep the coastal areas cool this time around. as we go into the weekend, there will be some rain very close to the bay area but definitely much cooler temperatures on sunday into the start of next week. let me show you ukiah. warming

turning to climate in crisis, hurricane season started right on time. it dumped nearly a foot of rain on south florida before racing through bermuda yesterday. they are forecasting a very active hurricane season. i-65 percent chance of above normal activity. the season officially starts on june 1 and continues until november 30. with la niña in effect, which is cooler than normal water, hurricane activity is expected to be higher as it creates a more favorable environment for storm development. other factors include hotter see temperatures. recently they revealed satellite operations showing the time- lapse of the 2021 hurricane season which was the third most active on atlantic record.
