return to homes, but they are vowing to find everyone accommodations until that time comes. at 6:00, primary election day is here. we are an hour away from polls opening across the bay area and live team coverage for you this morning. the san francisco race getting national attention and how redistricting is having an impact on the ballot this year. >> it's like mom, something got shot here and i am at the library. can you call my dad so he can pick me up. >> reporter: a shooting inside a south bay library forcing kids to duck for cover. it was a frightening scene that played out and the search is underway for suspects. and paying at the pump gets worse. the average price for a gallon of gas rising again overnight. we will break down what you can expect to pay. this is today in the bay.

and we step into tuesday morning. good morning to you. i am marcus washington. >> and am laura garcia. it is a busy morning. it is election day as well. we will get to the coverage of the moment. here's look at the forecast. we are checking what we can expect today. it is a nice sunrise. temperatures are warming up a little bit for the inland areas. let's see how the day will shape up. partly cloudy starts this morning. temperatures in the upper 50s at 8:00. at lunchtime, it is 75 degrees. a few high clouds moving by. they will continue to see clouds moving in as the temperatures reach into the upper 70s. eventually it will briefly hit 80 degrees. los gatos is 84 today.

dublin will see a high of 79 degrees. san francisco in the upper 60s and santa rosa reaching 86 degrees. it will be hotter in the valley over the next few days. we will take a look at that in the forecast, coming up in a few moments. sounds good. the primary election day is here. polls open in about an hour. voters in san francisco are deciding, should the district attorney stay or go? they face recalled today in an election that is getting national attention. >> good morning. experts say that this is about more than just they recall of chesa boudin. is weeks to whether or not his progressive policies are too lenient on crime as critics have proposed. the campaign went late into the night. both sides trying to get the message out there trying to connect with voters in san francisco, gathering the last- minute support. chesa boudin was elected on a platform of social justice . fewer incarcerations, more diversion programs, but opponents say the platform has now turned into a lack of

prosecution for criminals. >> the country needs criminal justice reform the criminal justice reform does not mean letting people out of custody. it is not a choice. you do not have to choose between criminal justice reform and public safety. you both at the same time. he is not delivering that. >> there it is and explained for ways to get to safety. they're not committed to a punishment only approach. they want services. they want supports. >> a lots of eyes at the national level and in other states watching the race. we have seen some up ads from big newspapers across the country. that is because we are wondering whether or not this is going to say something about that movement for social justice reform. the polls are open until 8:00 tonight. you have to get out there and vote. you may notice a difference

as you search your ballot for your favorite candidate for congress. they may not be who they expect. might be voting in an entirely new district. >> california has redrawn the mapping. that means that nbc bay area viewers who were are represented by one member of congress might have an entire different member of congress. >> you do not move but the lines around you did move. voting districts are redrawn every 10 years. this year california gets one fewer district as well. one fewer member of congress. 52 is a 53. these lines change. each congressional district is supposed have the same number of people in it. that is why san francisco's district is tiny. a lot of people are crammed in there. that is nancy pelosi's district. but in the area with a less dense concentration of people would be bigger. many districts did move and in some cases by a lot. look at the south bay into morgan hill. look a much more area the

congressman picked up with the 18th district. jimmy panetta loses a lot of area. people had years represented by jimmy panetta will see someone else instead. you have that one. now let's go to a different spot. take a look at the peninsula. the old map where you see all kinds of territory. these are a few examples. this is happening all over. the bottom line is that if you vote you might see different names on the ballot than you expect and for many of us, matter who wins today, and the general in november will have a new congressperson. either a new incumbent or one of his or her challengers. you should check the voter guide. is a helpful website help you visualize all of this.

we take a look at the microclimates, we are seeing temperatures ranging from mid 60s in half moon bay to the mid- 80s for concord and 90 in fairfield. we will see about the same tomorrow but thursday is when the temperatures really start to ramp up. san jose will be the upper 80s and we will see upper 90s in fairfield. we will talk what what is had for the weekend coming up. you been watching several issues on the road. the biggest concern right now is the focus toward san francisco because the traffic is heading in their around the bay bridge where the metering lights her on. the crashes blocking the connection from south bend one- to-oneto eastbound 80. it is heading toward the lower deck of the bay bridge out of san francisco. there may be spectator slowing or the detail might be inaccurate. the crash is jammed up where i thought had made it up to the shoulder. it is causing quite a slowdown. meanwhile, the rest of the bay looks pretty standard as far as

more in the forecast, coming up in a few minutes. we have heated up in a couple of spots. i am watching the area for another crash, coming up. a group of high tech companies including salesforce and google have written a letter to washington urging them to make it easier for the children of high tech workers to stay in america. currently workers on a h1 be visa, the skilled visa, which is mainly high-tech. they cannot extend the production after turning 21. that means that the mom or dad has the worker visa and they

can apply for permanent residency but permanent high- tech companies are asking immigration to make it easier for the young adults to stay. the worst case, the company say, the entire family, including the worker, leaves of the child turns 21, making a shortage of workers at companies that much worse. other news. shares of twitter come after elon musk threatened again to leave the deal. he claims that twitter has not given enough information about fake accounts. but the thing is he signed the deal to purchase twitter at $54.20 per share, acknowledging that there had been no due diligence like a home purchaser who signs away contingency. you can't go back and say you do not know about a problem. you signed with a contingency. they may and up in court. he would have to pay a alien dollar breakup fee if he does not buy twitter so theoretically, twitter could force him to buy twitter. he has clearly badly overpaid. a few products at the

degrees. we will start to see the heat today. if you compare that to half moon bay where temperatures are in the mid-60s. tomorrow we will start to see some of the temperatures coming up just a little bit. we will feel it on thursday when santa rosa tops out at 94 degrees on thursday. 85 in fremont. fairfield will reach 99 degrees and even hotter on friday. here's what is going on. we have high pressure strengthening off to the east and it is going to change our wind direction and really we can some of the onshore wind that we have had recently so it backs it off and keeps the coastal areas cool while the valleys get to the big ramp up in temperatures. we do see things changing for the weekend. check out sunday. some of the rain starts to dip closer into northern california

. possibly scattered showers and for the northbay on sunday. we will all get a nice cool down and going into next week, we will go back to lower humidity as well as clear skies. take a look at livermore in the next 10 days going from the 80s to the mid-90s on thursday. 99 degrees on friday. then you compare that to sunday where you will see highs in the 70s throughout the day. them back into the upper 80 by the middle of next week. let's take a look at the seven day forecast for the inland areas. you will have to put the 100 degrees there on friday. we want to make sure that you're prepared for the high heat that you will feel. it is going to be pretty hot on saturday. sunday will be the better of those days this weekend to get outside and then the temperatures are also coming up to about 80 in san francisco. you have been watching the breaking news. how is the update right now? >> we are looking at the least severe of the crashes. westbound 80 is jamming up past the crash that we thought was cleared pretty quickly. one vehicle in the middle of

the roadway. that is lane 305. that is jamming up on the encroach. that is on the east bay. in san francisco, the bay bridge is slowing now. the activity here, i am not getting a lot of details because they probably do not want to share it. it looks like a deadly crash resulted after a motorcycle get into a crash. the driver, i believe, of the motorcycle has died. we have a lot of activity in both directions. it is effective right now by all this activity. expect a lot going into san francisco. we have this going on north 101 just north of the airport. the two right lanes are blocked. it is just starting to slow. it is 6:21. protecting your money and identity. protect our loved ones.

chances are, you could have had a scam. the so-called imposter scams resulted in $445 million in losses. this is since 2020. estimates one in five of us has believed someone who called claiming to be from a government agency resulting in an average loss of $3000. government agencies are not going to call you. they're not going to send you text messages asking for money or even threatening year. that is what we have been seeing. fugue get any sort of government letter, you have to have the seal of that specific agency. most of them are very visible. you could do a google search online to see exactly what it looks like.

>> the better business bureau says that you can avoid imposter scams by never giving your bank information to anyone who calls asking for it and do not pay by gift card. if you're unsure, look at the agency and call for yourself. as a reminder, the irs only contact you via mail, not by phone and agents do not threaten to arrest you. supply chain delays and changing consumer taste in clothing is leading to dramatic changes for a lot of major retailers. retailers are now stuck with a surplus of goods. gap inc. is reporting 34% more inventory than this time last year. >> we have record levels of inventory but we also have even higher record levels of sales. incredible sales right now. we are almost 8% above where we were last year. and last year was a record. >> next on the "today" show, we break down how the surplus could mean a great deal for the

the primary election is here. we are watching several key races across the bay area as polls get ready to open in just about a half hour. we are going 101 live with experts on everything you need to know before you cast your vote and will break down the key races across the bay area. this is today in the bay. good tuesday morning to you. thank you for starting your day with us. we will get to our election coverage in just a moment let's check in with meteorologist kari hall and see what we can expect today. it is a nice start to our morning. taking a look at pleasant hill and how the morning will shape up. upper 50s to start and a few clouds in the mix, but it quickly warms up. we are headed for 81 degrees.

eventually making it into the mid to upper 80s in some spots for the inland areas. notice how san francisco, san mateo, states in the 60s. from 60s near the coast to 90 in fairfield today and upper 80s for the south county as well as part of the north bay. our temperatures get hotter headed towards the end of the week we will talk more about that in a look ahead with cooler temperatures by the end of the weekend. new overnight, two deadly shootings in the east bay. the first happened at 11:30 last night in oakland. police say it was a double shooting. one person died at the scene. the other shooting, that other person was taken to the hospital. the second shooting happened at midnight at a home. police say they do not have a suspect in custody in either case.

about 30 minutes, voters in the south bay will be dropping off or filling out their ballots as the registrars office is opening for voting today. this is in santa clara county. joining us this morning is the registrar of voters. morning to you. >> good morning. >> this is like the playoffs for the big election day here pick a lot of people getting out and casting their ballots. what should people keep in mind as they head out to cast their votes today? >> well, i want them to know that the polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. today and we are ready for every voter to come out and vote.

and for those that have not registered yet, it is not too late. you can come down and register and vote at any one of our vote center. we are ready for everyone to come out today. >> that's good to know. some people like to wait until election day to have the experience to vote. what do those people who are registering today need to bring? i.d.s or proof of residency? what do they need to bring? >> they just need to bring themselves down to the both centers. we are ready to help them pick we are able to verify their identification information against a statewide database in our office. table just coming and fill out some information and be able to cast a ballot. >> while a lot of people will be coming in, some will fill them out at home and vote by mail but they can still drop them off today. talk about how long they have until they can drop those off? >> short. every voter should just get their ballot postmarked by today. by 8:00 p.m. they can drop it off at any vote center or get it postmarked.

as long as it is received in our office in the next seven days, we can count it. voters should not worry. just get it postmarked or dropped off tonight. >> what about voter turnout? we done some stories where it has been pretty low. what are you expecting today? >> well, right now, we are at about 17% as of yesterday. i am hoping to receive over 100,000 ballots in the mail today. we are estimating about a 35 to 45% turnout in santa clara county. gubernatorial elections and the four year cycle, typically our lower turnout but i am our voters will get out and vote this morning. >> in 26 minutes the polls open and people can cast their ballots. shannon, i want to thank you for joining us and getting things started for the day. >> you're welcome.

it will be a busy one. for the first time in 20 years there is no incumbent running for sheriff in santa clara county. the current sheriff decided not to seek re-election after a series of controversies. among those running, kevin jensen who ran unsuccessfully in 2014. two other candidates, sean allen has criticized and is supervising sergeant christine -- is a 20 year deputy and army veteran with what she says is a unique perspective on changing, hiring policy. also in the race is the palo alto police chief who spent 27 years in the l.a. county sheriff's office and was a police chief. we will continue our primary election coverage now with the

state sender. and name familiar around here in the south bay. thank you for joining us. you are not up for re-election but you will closely be watching today's primary, because you have been so active in politics in the south bay. what do you think about the sheriff's race in santa clara county? >> thank you and good morning to you. the sheriff's race is a big deal and i'm not sure sometimes how much voters realize it. we call it a down ballot race because you have the governor at the top of the ballot and the mayor and some other things going on and people get to sheriff and sometimes there is a little bit of a lack of awareness. this has been decades since we've had an open race for the sheriff seat. one candidate has run before but the others are new. you just hope of voters do

their homework and come through with their information and are excited about choosing a new share. >> that is an important role to fill and it will be's interesting to see how it plays out. the mayor is terming out and several candidates are throwing their hat in the ring. most with familiar names. >> yes, there are. i think there are about seven candidates running altogether. it tends to be that way, but after this primary, this race will get whittled down to a top two. it's almost mathematically or statistically impossible for someone to get a majority, 50% plus one in the primary. if they did in this local race there wouldn't be a top two unlike the legislative or statewide races. you can win the primary but typically not with seven candidates dividing up the vote this way. so, we will see who the top two

crews are still out there this morning. as you take a look at the scene, this is in san mateo. the fire itself happened close to deer park avenue and highland avenue. firefighters say the fire obviously is under control but they are remaining on scene making sure there are no hot spots. the fire broke out last night just before 10:00. take a look at this time lapse video. residents were forced to evacuate that they have since been allowed to return. firefighters say even as the rain this weekend, the dry conditions are causing concerns all year long. >> it just shows you that the fire season is year-round trick if you look behind me you can see the vegetation is dry. this is a very old eucalyptus glow. that is what's burning right now so it just shows you that a few inches of rain, we could have a serious fire. >> the cause of the fire is under investigation.

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking our forecast. it goes hand-in-hand with it but it did not do much for the dry conditions out there. >> we need a lot to make up for the deficits we have seen this year. we also, at times, have these breezy winds, but for right now we have favorable weather conditions. as we take a look outside and track the weather, it is 50 degrees. it is a cool morning with high humidity. we will see a few clouds in the mix and into the rest of today. keeping you comfortable with 70s, but there will be some spots that warm-up into the mid- 80s, even hitting 90 degrees in fairfield. you compare that to the cool weather we see near the coast. the valleys will heat up and we will talk more about that in a few minutes.

mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? many parts of the bay area are lighter but we have this deadly crash in san francisco. it's a little confusing. the big take away someone has died as a result of the crash. southbound highway 101 at i-80. this effects both eastbound and westbound connector. a motorcycle crash resulting in -- a motorcycle coming down onto a local roadway and there's a lot of activity. both connectors are currently closed and chp is handling that situation. it will jam up south of the market. there is a crash on westbound 80 and everything else looks clear . back to you. there is a rising health threat is cases of monkeypox climb across the country. next on today in the bay, the changes health officials are recommending you make if you

creek. it's going to be partly to mostly cloudy. temperature is about 60 degrees at 8:00 and 77 at lunchtime. warming up into the 80s today but we do have hotter temperatures ahead. we will talk more about that in a look at the microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. many areas with lighter traffic but this is a big problem. this deadly crash at southbound 101 just off the bay bridge complicating things there. the motorcycle and bought in a deadly crash with lots of activity on the freeway and surface streets. we will track this on the rest of your commute coming up. the cdc raising its alert level for monkeypox to level two. the number of cases has increased to almost 1000 people

with either confirmed or suspected cases worldwide. this is the largest outbreak of the virus outside of africa in decades. last week, the san francisco department of health reported the first probable case and the cdc is recommending travelers ware masks on planes and other mass transit. the white house may delay an announcement on forgiving student loans until july or august pick it now sounds like a win and not in if. >> i think any doubt we might have had is gone. the federal government, we think, will be forgiving student loans. because candidate joe biden promised to forget the first $10,000 and the talk is that is not enough and that may be part of the delay. the wall street journal was the first to report this. some in the white house are pushing for as much as $50,000

forgiveness. the other detail that interests us here in the bay area is will there be a cap to that forgiveness based on earnings? generally speaking, we make more money here in the bay area then a family in kansas. we also pay $3.00 more for gas and $8 million more for a house but it could be that many people in the bay area budget just as hard as any american might not see forgiveness at all. a group of students protested in washington, d.c. for gun control. some more bulletproof vest and were joined by a congressman who is the lead negotiator for democrats as new restrictions make their way through the senate. murphy says congress is in a put up or shut up moment. on the left, the governor of tennessee signing an executive order to further secure schools as a way of hopefully preventing the next shooting and on the right the governor of new york signing a new bill into law that further restricts guns. including raising the age to buy an assault weapon to 21.

their head coach but today all the attention and focus returns to basketball and fans are excited and very confident heading into game three of the nba final. as for the warriors, they are waking up in boston this morning. they arrived yesterday after leaving yesterday morning. they got to the hotel in boston around 7:30 p.m. local time. the warriors and the celtics are tied 1-1 in the series. golden state dominating in game two with the celtics and the road warriors have been winning one road game in 26 consecutive playoff series. that is remarkable and they know they need to win one game in boston to win the championship. >> we have been down the road and back. we won some other games on the road. most of the games, there were some shootouts and there's a lot of different scenarios. you have to be prepared and have the personnel and resiliency to live in those

in san francisco, sang in the 60s and santa rosa goes to 80 degrees. we are going to see those temperatures really start to warm up for the south county tomorrow but especially on thursday and this won't even be the peak of the heat. we are reaching 93 degrees on thursday and 99 in fairfield. santa rosa will be in the mid- 90s. with hotter temperatures we have the concern of fire danger and lighter winds as we see the vegetation drying out even more so than it has over the past few months with the dry conditions. we do have some relief coming this weekend. we will see rain to the north and possibly some spotty showers in the north bay on sunday. that will bring in some relief from the heat. let me show you ukiah and what we are expecting over the next 10 days. mid-80s today and tomorrow. upper 80s on thursday and 94

degrees on friday. there will be some spots in the upper 90s and up to 100 degrees, but take a look at the dips and temperatures on sunday. 80s early next week so our inland temperatures ramping up and coming back down. the peak of that will be on friday with hot valley temperatures up to 100 degrees. san francisco will also see a significant warm-up. up to 80 but a big difference compared to the triple digits we will see in some of our valleys. mike, you have been watching some trouble spots for the commute. >> yes. the first is that deadly crash. look at your map. i circled the area. this will affect southbound 101 and the connector to eastbound 80 and from the upper deck into san francisco. that connector is also still blocked. not a lot of updates as far as when they hope to reopen that. and investigation is slowing down traffic.

yesterday afternoon. police say to see suspect chased the man into the building and shot him. police say it appears to be gang related because of what they were shouting before hand. the victim was taken to the hospital and police are still looking for to see suspect. no descriptions were given. now to a follow-up on a th here is a live look at that scene. it happened near deer park avenue and highland avenue. firefighters say the fire is now under control. two crews remain unseen watching for hot spots. the fire broke out last night just before 10:00 p.m. this is the smoke from that scene in the time-lapse video. nearby residents were evacuated but have been allowed to return home. one last look at the forecast because we are still dealing with dry conditions. it will be dry and hot, especially by the end of the
