fire sweeps through the east bay overnight. the rapid response from firefighters to put it out. this latest fire another reminder of the dangerous drought and fire conditions. plus, people are angry. they are frustrated. ousted any historic recall being launched nationwide. san francisco voters vote to fire district attorney chesa boudin. the results are in for the governor's race. who will face off against governor newsom when the voters head to the polls in november. our team breaks out all the results filtering in this morning. this is today in the bay streaming live for you on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online at nbcbayarea.com a good wednesday morning to you and thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we have full election coverage ahead but first, the new overnight , their brief scare

for firefighters and people in the area of pittsburgh. take a look at this timeless video of the fire. this was posted by cal fire . it started after 1:00 in the morning. cal fire telling us it happened near woodland hills park. this is south of highway 4. it burned a little more than five acres before crews were able to extinguish it. breaking news coming into our newsroom. we will get to that in a moment but let's check in with kari hall. take a look at the weather conditions. we see gusty winds coming through the delta and then taking a look, 23 mile-per-hour winds. when you have gusty winds and even a cigarette butt or small spark can really cause things to quickly get out of control. we are monitoring that as we go into today but temperatures stay mild at least for this afternoon. we are headed for the low 80s reaching into the mid-80s

today. 75 in oakland, 69 in san francisco. we have not the ocean breeze to keep our coastal areas and parts of the interbay nice and comfortable but it will start to heat up tomorrow. we will have a look at that and also the peak of the heat were some spots reached to triple digits coming up in the microforms the newest version of its covid booster shot provide stronger protection against the most recent omicron variants. the new booster is also meant to protect the original covid strain and provide a times the amount of antibodies. the so-called vaccine is in the second phase of a three phase trial period and is considered moderna's best booster candidate. if approved, it could be available this fall. turning to our primary election coverage, we begin with a local recall election getting a lot of national attention. the effort to unseat the district attorney chesa boudin. >> this is proposition h which

means we call the d.a. in a no keeps him in office. this morning, those results were resounding. boudin out. our reporter has more reaction on the results this morning. >> reporter: the recall supporters were out celebrating early last night. the results came in pretty early, just after 9:00. 61% of voters supported the recall of san francisco district attorney chesa boudin. take a look at the front page of the chronicle. this election is making headlines this morning. the results led to cheers from the recall supporters late last night who criticized boudin for a lax justice system and going easy on violent criminals. >> san francisco can now move forward with new leadership that will give a better and safer path for our city. >> people are angry. people are frustrated. i want to be very clear about what happened tonight. the right-wing billionaires outspent us three to one.

they exploited an environment in which people are appropriately upset. and they created an electrical dynamic where we were literally shadowboxing. >> reporter: here is what comes next. boudin will be removed 10 days after the board of supervisors formally accept the election results. mayor london breed will choose his replacement and voters will elect a new district attorney in november. this race does have national attention due to police reforms in public safety reform. all eyes on this race today. now, in the race for governor, democratic incumbent gavin newsom faces a lot of opponents but he took the lead and the other top candidates, this morning, it looks like it is run up between newsom -- the race for california lieutenant governor, the republican

challenger angela underwood jacob's is coming in second place. for california's superintendent of public instruction, tony thurmond is taking lee. three others are tied for second but nowhere close to him. our election coverage continues. coming up at 5:30 on today in the bay, we have the latest results on two big races in the south bay including the mayoral race. don't forget, you can also visit nbcbayarea.com for all of the results. developing now, a growing push for gun control as new data shows more than 700 people have been shot and killed in the u.s. since the texas school shooting. according to gun violence archive, there have been deadly shootings in 43 states in the past two weeks. 23 who died our children. on capitol hill, a

have huge inflation pressures that inflation is really our top economic problem at this point. >> it was a reasonable guess at the time that supply chains and families who, by all measures are doing quite well, would drive up prices. the republicans had a different explanation, also reasonable, that too much government spending was at the root of inflation. the american rescue plan. >> we're seeing high inflation in almost all developed countries around the world. and they have very different fiscal policies. so, it cannot be the case for the bulk of the inflation that we are experiencing. reflects the impact of the arp. >> some countries have worse inflation and, obviously, they were not part of the american rescue plan. we will get more information

with the consumer price index and we are also watching an index that indicates growth in the second quarter. the quarter we are in right now will be very small. if it is negative, and the economy strong, that would be the second quarter of negative growth in a row and that is the classical definition of a recession. so, we will add a question mark to that. recession but with all the negative news, i want to always remind you, the same amount of data is crossing my desk that is positive. jobs are up, jobless rates are near historic lows, wages are ups and families have a lot of money to spend. they want to spend it on vacation. >> a lot of people want to go on the vacation but the question is -- we will take a live look at sfo. we are talking about travel season taking off but pilot shortages. for the second straight year, airlines are struggling to keep

tomorrow afternoon. also 91 in livermore and martinez with napa hitting 90 degrees. but we don't stop there. up to 100 degrees in concord on friday and it will be a really hot start to our we can. sam martin reaching 101 and 105 in fairfield. san francisco comes up to the upper 70s. when we compare what we are expecting on friday versus the record high temperature, it looks like santa rosa may tie the record high but elsewhere, we may be just below record high temperature for this time of your pick some relief is coming our way in the form of rain chances that we will see on sunday. definitely, much cooler temperatures. this seems like a repeat of last weekend where the heat was broken by a chance of showers. we are also looking at much cooler temperatures or the start of next week. taking a look at our seven-day forecast, upper 80s for today and mid-90s tomorrow. then 100 degrees for some of

our inland spots on friday. saturday, 93 degrees but look at the relief we will see on sunday. once again, more clouds and a chance of showers for the north bay while san francisco will see a brief spike in temperatures. really uncomfortable on friday with a high of 80 but it will feel much nicer with mid-70s on saturday and upper 60s on sunday. mike, how is it looking for the morning commute? it is slow but i found the reason why. there is this slowing north 101 at talley. that is where csp just filed the report. a crash involving possibly six vehicles. it sounds like everything is off the shoulder but there could be attire in the lane. we will follow that closely. very early for this morning toward 680. also, north 101 just passing us, and earlier crash has one lanes blocked. we are tracking that. not a major focal point. then the rest of the bay, likely a long drive through

two of the biggest races, san jose mayor and santa clara county sheriff. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us like to tell us who will be on the ballot in the november run a. this has been so interesting to watch. >> reporter: two really big races if you live in the south bay. we know it is no surprise that santa clara county will get a new sheriff. sheriff lori smith is retiring. but, we know the two candidates are replacing her are coming from within the department and the other from outside the kevin jensen made the top spot and is a retired santa clara county sheriff's deputy. who has opposed sheriff smith before he lost in the election. robert jonsen will also appear on the ballot and is the head of the palo alto police department who also headed up the menlo political the police in certain los angeles sheriff's department. to the san jose mayor's race for the top two candidates are poised for our runoff and they are a veteran of self-pay

politics and a relative newcomer. the supervisor cindy chavez was the top vote getter as of last night and is very well known having served on the san jose city council as well. her likely opponent will be matt mahan, a first term council member. >> i think the most important thing i offer is a track record of accomplishment and experience in a public sector. the city of san jose is a big ship and it needs to turn in a new direction and that will take experience and that is why i am running and that is why i decided to run in the first place. >> i think the voters want to see accountability for results. i think we are doing a lot of the same things and expecting different outcomes. it's time to take a different direction. voters want a choice and they will have one in november. >> reporter: as he said, the run-up is set for november, the biggest races in the south bay are still undecided.

>> we will continue to follow. thank you. the ballot itself is a bit confusing when it comes to the u.s. senate race. alex padilla's name appeared twice because governor newsom appointed him to the senate seat when kamala harris won the vice presidency. he is the winner this morning and will serve out the rest of the current term and in january. he also has a lead in the race for the seat that begins next january and went to 2028. he will face a november run a. another big race we are following, the attorney general pick governor gavin newsom appointed rob bonta to the post last year to replace the health and human services secretary. this morning, bonta is the projected winner. we are waiting to see who bonta will face in the november election. despite big races in big money, voter turnout appears to be pretty dismal here in california. >> today in the bay is at the counseling center with details.

>> reporter: machines are working hard tuesday night and are wrapping up right now because so few voters came out for this election. some people in contra costa county cancer ballot early in the state primary just over 113,000 voting by mail. 13,000 voting in person. >> contra costa county, we are seeing fairly low turnout compared to a general election. that is typical for primary elections when it is the midterm election. >> i don't follow politics a lot. but, yes, when i hear about local things, it makes me want to make sure i put in my two cents. >> reporter: is not just contra costa county, voter turnout numbers are low statewide. results are still trickling in. our website is a great place for updates. head to nbcbayarea.com and click on the top story box that will take you to a list of all of the races are out the bay area that we have been following.

taking a look at a union 76 in fremont. the price there for regular unleaded is now $6.39 a gallon. just when you thought gas prices could not get any higher, it does. according to aaa, three out of four americans plan to put a pause on road travel due to the higher cost. overnight, the average jumped to a nickel under $5.00 and is expected to reach $5.00 by the end of the week. the bay area averages are much higher. sensitive cisco is $6.62 and one oil industry insider tells nbc supply from russia and saudi arabia is crucial but also america's ability to refine oil is falling behind. >> we haven't had a new refinery in this country for more than 60 years. they are held together but duct tape and bailing wire. now there is an absolutely limit

chuck schumer says the lead negotiator for the republican say, quote, hope springs eternal. probably not how the families of the victims feel. as you mentioned, they will speak to lawmakers today and one of the witnesses scheduled is the 11- year-old girl who smeared herself with her classmates blood to convince the gunmen she was dead. in the meantime, the city council in uvalde held an emergency meeting and the mayor echoed other leaders in their anger that the police do not have the facts of the incident straight. >> well, we were told one thing monday and the next day the story changed. we were told for a week that a teacher prop the door open with the rock and at the end of the week the story was going to pick those are the missteps i am talking about. >> missing from the meeting is a new city councilman who was
