blood. >> reporter: the committee using words of top trump administration officials and allies from their videotaped depositions to undercut the former president's false claims the election was stolen. former attorney general william barr sharing in explicit language what he told mr. trump. >> i did not agree with saying the election was stolen and putting out this stuff which i told the president was [ bleep ]. >> resonating with the president eats own daughter ivanka trump. >> it affected my perspective. i respect attorney general barr. so i accepted what he said was saying. >> reporter: the committee also showing a senior campaign aide saying mr. trump was told in blunt terms that he had lost the election. the former president's son-in-law jared kushner dismissing a threat by the white house council to resign. >> i kind of took it to just be whining to be honest with you. >> among the hearing most jarring revelations, republican liz cheney describing former president trump's anger yelling at advisor who is urged him to do more to call off the riot. >> the rioters chants to hang mike pence, the president responded with this sentiment.

quote, "make our supporters have the right idea." mike pence, quote, deserves it. >> reporter: and punctuating the night. this montage of rioters explaining why they stormed the capitol. >> i did believe, you know, that the election was being stolen. and trump asked us to come. >> reporter: and for their part republicans slammed the committee's work as a political witch hunt lifting the former president's own wardsed words. we also heard from former president trump last night responding overnight, blasting the committee members as political hacks and again repeating his false claims of widespread election fraud. savannah? >> thank you. want to turn to hallie jackson. nbc sports's senior washington correspondent. what are revelations from the first night in your mind? >> there is a fair amount of new

information. the committee pledged we would get new revelations and we did. one is the weight of the committee laid out even people close to the former president knew the lies about the election fraud they claimed were not true. that includes ivanka trump who you saw. includes the former attorney general bill barr. which we had known about. but then there is revelation that even former chief of staff mark meadows said there is no there there when he was discussing the results of the 2020 election. this acknowledgment that those fraud lies were in fact not true. that is one. the second is centers of the proud boys and oath keepers, these far right groups and the actions they were taking in the days before the insurrection and on january 6th and the connection that the committee is looking to lay out to connect

the dots to former president trump himself. you saw some of that in his montage that the committee played towards the end of the hearing previewing what else they will lay out with these members of the proud boys talking about how they were inspired to come. they felt like they were talking marching orders from the former president. and then i would say overall, the compelling nature of the new video, the audio that we've seen. hearing from officer edwards, for example, think about the second impeachment trial for former president trump. that was a week after january 6th. the committee has had the time to go through and gather the evidence and show it to the american people. that is a significant difference from what we've seen before. >> and where do you see this going from here. >> the committee has six more hearings as congressman liz cheney laid out. the next where'll see will focus on the claims of a stolen election. we're going to see them lay out, for example, the fall out inside the department of justice. the pressured campaign on former

president mike pence and hone in on the riot the inrrsutiecon itself. the question is who is watching? what is the audience and are people actually taking this in. that is a question we don't have an answer to just yet. the committee hopes to show all americans that the former president is at the center of this conspiracy. i spoke with one democratic member of commerce who said he didn't think this was going to change one single mind for people. didn't think this was going to impact at all politically the next election. but this is actually not about the next election. it is in next generation. and committee wants to lay out an accurate record of history. this is an historical moment for them. >> hallie jackson, thank you. now to yet another mass shooting in america. an employee opened fire at a manufacturing plant in western maryland yesterday leaving three coworkers dead, one critically hurt. it happened at columbia machine

ink in smithburg. the suspect fled after the shooting but was tracked down by police. also this morning, the school the officer and suspect are both being treat ford injuries. police chief under scrutiny in uvalde is speaking out in his first interview since the massacre. new comments as we learn some victims may have still been alive while authorities waited to move in. nbc's morgan chesky joins us now from uvalde. hey morgan. good morning. >> reporter: since that horrific day at robb elementary we've heard from just about everyone accept school police chief pete arradondo. he's sharing his side with the texas tribune explaining everything including why he left multiple police radios outside

and why he took song to finally take down that gunman. there is new evidence that school district police chief pete arradondo and other officers on the scene waited more than an hour for protective equipment. even though they knew there were victims inside classrooms at robb elementary that were still alive. that's according to video footage and other investigative material reviewed by the "new york times" but not confirmed by nbc news. the times reporting investigators have determined more than a dozen children in two classrooms were still alive. during the 1:17 it took to finally end the standoff. chief arradondo breaking his silence overnight telling the texas tribune when the first shots rang out he ran towards the danger armed with his glock service pistol, assuming he might die because he had no body armor. -- not one but two police radios behind, thinking according to the tribune that they would slow him down and that he needed both

hands free. >> he said that was a conscious decision. he rushed in there with both of his hands on his gun because he was taught that that was the most accurate way to attack the shooter if he ran into him. >> reporter: when arradondo did locate the shooter in a classroom. he says he tried to open the door but it was locked. adding the gunman's bullets pierced the classroom door and others pierced the wall wounding officers who retreated. the chief says he called for tactical gear, a sniper and keys to get inside the classroom but he tried dozens of keys with multiple sets until officers finally found one that worked and were able to enter. arradondo disputed previous claims saying he did not give any instruction that police should not attempt to breech the building and also said he never considered himself the scene's incident demander. >> law enforcement experts we talk to still criticize the response as the police chief for the school district he, they say was the incident commander and

so many people are watching those gas prices as they continue to tick up. we're getting new inflation numbers. they're not good for the month of may. they're up 8.6% over last year. that is the highest number in 40 years. it is hitting items across the board as americans struggle to keep up. >> everything is expensive. food price, gas prices, oil prices. >> reporter: but perhaps worse, the squeeze at the gas station with the national average now higher than its ever been. nearly $5 a gallon with no relief in sight. it is the most visible sign of the nation's soaring inflation with rates at near 40-year highs, hitting every corner of the country. experts say compared to last year, the average household is now paying $450 more per month for the same goods and services. >> well, it is very painful.

right? i mean you got to make a hard choice. do i fill my gas tank, do i fill my groceries, pay my rent? >> reporter: in the first quarter household wealth dropped for the first time in two years. and according to a recent poll nearly three-fourths of americans have cut back on discretionary spending. president biden face falling approval rating because of the economy says the current situation is result of unique circumstances. >> covid-19 triggered a global economic crisis we're still digging out of and putin's unprovoked war in ukraine has created economic problems for the entire globe. >> reporter: experts say -- near record lows. treasury secretary janet yellen says she believes a recession can be avoided. >> it is amazing how pessimistic they are given that we have about the strongest labor market we've had in the entire postwar period. >> reporter: still a recent poll shows nearly two-thirds of

americans are not optimistic and only expect inflation to get worse. >> for many americans this is completely foreign. we have convenient this kind of inflation for two generations and it is incredibly debilitating. >> reporter: and getting back to gas prices, they are so high the irs made a rare change in the change. the markets are down already hundreds of points. millions of americans are struggling to keep up. savannah? dangerous heat and we're looking to possibly break words in california and arizona as well. take a look at where we're expecting highs to get to today. phoenix 113 degrees.

right underneath our feet they have been digging and blasting to add another train to carry more of these passengers out to the concourses 25 airlines, 21 hundred flights and 300,000 passengers each day. make atlanta hartsfield jackson the busiest airport in the world. opened in 1980 the plane train runs from the terminal to the concourses crammed people. now a massive project to add more train cars to handle the surge in passengers. so to get in we have to start by wearing all of our ppe then we climb into this man cage for a big drop into the hole a crane lifts the cage high over the parking lot and drops it straight into the access shaft and here we are. the biggest construction project under the world's busiest airport. it is a 700 foot tunnel straight through thisk.
