know. >> reporter: it happened on a wednesday in the middle of march. michelle called 911 when she heard an alarm go off. -- . >> reporter: she says she saw a man run out of the apartment across the street. >> he was not in the right state. whether he was high or not is not for me to say. he talked in a youtube video about his public drinking that he says began after he started jump school in the military. >> we were just out there getting wasted. >> reporter: we do not know if he was intoxicated that day when he pulled the alarm at the apartment building where he was staying. fire crews arrived but found there was no fire. >> be advised, pd response to this location for a domestic

dispute. >> reporter: a security camera shows him just after he got there. she wants the officers tried to calm him down as he approached. they were not confrontational. then she heard crashing but could not see what happened next. police did not release the body camera video from the responding officers. the police department declined comment for this story citing an ongoing investigation. sources that have seen the video tell our unit that it shows him trying to get into the apartment through the broken window. one of the officers handcuffed him and placed him face down. police and firefighters attempting to get him onto a gurney but sources say one firefighter put his knee against his back. throughout the struggle, no one checked his vital signs. even after baron said, "i can't breathe.

" >> about five minutes after being handcuffed, he was unresponsive. >> reporter: a woman watched as medics tried to revive him. maryellen hannigan says when she got the call from the hospital that night, her son was unconscious and near death so they put her on speaker phone. >> i spoke with my son and i do not know if he was able to hear me. i was able to say my goodbyes to him. i was not ready to say my goodbyes to him. and, when they called me and they told me that he had passed away, i fell on the floor screaming. i was absolutely shocked. >> the medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death. the fire department says that while the investigation continues, they summoned police because a man was displaying violent and erratic behavior
