fuelled by the extreme heat and strong winds for more on intense conditions let's bring in nbc meteorologist michelle grossman. michelle, good morning >> good morning. i hope you had a great weekend it was a sweltering weekend for many of us we'll continue at least through wednesday. we'll see hundreds of records broken this is an historic area, high pressure bringing in the southerly flow we have a jet stream so far to the north bringing in summer like temperatures. let's go ahead and take a look at the warnings. we have a lot of them, 54 million americans today under some sort of heat alert. this most likely will be extended as we head throughout the next couple of hours those numbers are going to climb, but we are looking at excessive heat warnings, excessive heat watches we had report of a man baking a cake and also a burger on his dashboard in phoenix so it is hot out there we're looking at heat stretching from the southwest to upper midwest, ohio valley into parts of the carolinas here to set up the jet stream so far to the north allowing the summer like heat to climb all the way to the upper midwest, we're going to see heat indices

at 115 that's why it's so dangerous we're going to see itfor a couple days. we're looking at 100 records in 125 states that record heat continuing today. also wednesday look at some of these temperatures, guys we're looking at 105 in parts of kansas and it will feel like 115 for some >> wow >> all right, thank you, michelle a bipartisan group of senators may have finally ended a years long impasse over new federal gun laws in this country. ten democrats and ten republicans say they have a framework for a stricter set of gun safety laws. it comes after thousands protests in cities across the country calling for an end to gun violence nbc's job nbc's josh lederman breaks it down for us. >> reporter: democrats and republicans doing what almost no one thought they could, reaching a deal on guns it's a compromise, far short of what democrats wanted. like an assault weapons ban. still president biden saying it would be the most significant gun legislation to pass congress
