record-high temperatures, like 114 degrees in phoenix now the eric stream heat will move into hundreds more cities this week. let's turn to nbc meteorologist michelle grossman who is tracking that heat wave. michelle, good morning >> good morning to you both. this is dangerous, record-breaking historical and it's going to last for the next few days we do have 54 million americans under some sort of heat alert whether it's excessive heat warning, excessive heat watch. that's what we're watch being from the southwest all the way to the northern plains, the ohio valley into the great lakes and the carolinas as well. we're going to see temperatures into the 90s, 100s it's going to feel like 115 in some spots here's the set up. the jet stream so far to the north it opens the door to the summer like heat coming in hundreds all the way to omaha, nebraska, it's going to feel like 101 in some spots, 98 degrees in nashville, raleigh 98 90s in maryland. houston 99 degrees tomorrow we're going to keep the heat in place as well into the upper 90s in minneapolis, 99 in louisville and 100 degrees in

charlotte. later on this week, still warm, not maybe quite as warm in parts of the upper midwest, but we're looking at the upper 80s in new york city by thursday. we'll talk more about the heat, guys we're also looking at strong to severe storms today as well. >> all right, michelle, thank you. today marks three weeks since 19 children and two teachers were killed in their school by a teenager with an assault rifle. and the public outcry may have finally pushed senators into action a bipartisan group reaching a framework for a stricter set of gun safety laws. nbc's brie jackson joins us now from d.c brie, good morning so, what made the cut and what didn't >> reporter: good morning, phillip. republicans and democrats doing what almost no one thought they could, reaching a deal on guns the president saying it would be the most significant gun safety legislation to pass congress in decades. the framework reached yesterday would enhance background checks for 18 to 21-year-olds, incentivize states to implement red flag laws, includes new

funding for school safety, mental health, and telehealth. it would also clarify who is licensed to sell a firearm and penalized straw purchases. but here's what's not in the deal it would not ban semi-automatic weapons or high capacity magazines. and it would not raise the age to buy assault weapons it would also not apply universal background checks. ten republican senators have signed onto this framework senate republican leader mitch mcconnell is not among them, but he did issue a statement supporting the negotiations, though not necessarily the final product. meanwhile, senate majority leader chuck schumer called it a good first step. >> for the first time in close to 30 years, congress seems ready to reject the vice-like grip the nra has had on the congress, and move forward to meaningful gun legislation >> reporter: and now senate staffers will have to write a bill that gets 60 votes in the senate phillip?
