5:35 am
rates once again today. as tom costello reports, this comes amid skyrocketing inflation. >> reporter: good morning. it is not a cliche to say that all eyes are on the fed right now, on the fed and wall street. today we expect the federal reserve will raise interest rates by the most it has raised rates since 1994, almost 30 years. we expect a three quarters of one percentage point rate hike because inflation was out of control. every american sees it when they pump gas or by food or clothing go on a trip and now the fed is behind the eight ball, trying to get inflation under control before it gets out of control the trouble is, the challenge is to raise interest rates, tapping the brakes on the economy without slamming the brakes on the economy and putting the economy
5:36 am
into a recession. it's a fine line. the good news is right now unemployment remains near 50 year lows and we have strong consumer spending come up but will that hold up as the federal reserve continues to raise rates to try to slow the rate of inflation and hopefully bring it back down to something more manageable. it is one of those pocketbook issues that matters deeply in an election year. it matters to every american so we will watch it closely. coming up on today, everything you need to know and what we are watching as we go into bed watch on this wednesday. >> thank you. new details out of southern california where two almonte police officers was shot and killed. this is the procession for the officers held late last night. you can see dozens of police cars and motorcycles with their lights flashing. this is the scene where it happened. the two officers were dispatched to a motel room yesterday afternoon and there was a report of a possible stabbing related to a domestic violence call. when the officers arrived there, a man opened fire inside the motel room and once again in the parking lot.

5:38 am
know. >> think about it this is a historic moment. it's the first time that almost everybody and our committee and society, in our families, will be able to get vaccinated. first of all, kids get disease themselves. we can predict who will get really sick so it's important to protect them. in fact, more kids were hospitalized under the age of 5 during omicron than any other older age group of kids so i think it's really important. number two, it protects all of us because studies have shown that although teens and young adults may bring the virus into the household, it's the kids that become the focus of spreading it within the household so by protecting them, you protect the other household members. and thirdly, we can't really be this virus until we build up that wall of humidity. multiple reasons to get immunized for that age group. well tolerated. no real serious side effects to talk about. very much everybody can have the vaccine now. i think it's really important for all adults to get up-to-
5:39 am
date on immunizations which means at least one booster for everyone. and that's really crucial as we write this through. i think we will have a decent break. but, again, the reason for the vaccine is that insurance policy for the future because we don't know what to fall and winter will bring. >> dr. david chin-hong and i spoke about much more on the current state of this covid surge period you can watch the full interview on our nbc bay area streaming app. download it for free and watch it on roku, amazon fire tv, and apple tv. a live look at san francisco. a beautiful start to the morning. temperatures are going on a bit of a roller coaster ride this morning. >> that's a great way to put it because it's been humid this past weekend and we had that system that moved out. then we are drying out. then we had the wind pick up and we still see temperatures in the 80s. we a 15 to 20 degree dropped
