7:06 am
>> reporter: we've already seen the impact of this, mortgage applications dropped by half last week, and that's because interest rates have been ticking up all year as the fed was expected to raise rates and then did. and we're going to see rates continue to move high. adjustable rate mortgages, credit cards, for example, home equity lines all of those will continue to move higher in the coming weeks lock in your rate now if you can, pay off your credit card balances, if you can melissa lee is the anchor of "fast money" and joins us now. >> good morning. >> i'm sure there's folks saying wait inflation is a problem so the fed made other things more expensive. explain how raising the prices via interest rates hopefully cools down the economy and tamps down the inflation problem. >> think about it as putting grit into the wheels of the economy. you want to slow things down
7:07 am
just enough to slow demand down and bring prices down. what the fed wants to achieve is price stability. think about a dollar that you have today, people in businesses need to know what that dollar will buy in the future if you have no idea, if you think prices are going to be 35% higher in a year, which is exactly what we saw with energy prices, up 35% in one year, then you have no idea you can't make decisions so that is paralyzing to the economy. so it's a real tradeoff here. >> if people continue to have high demand, are continually willing to pay the higher prices that shoots inflation up so the fed is trying to make things more expensive so people stop spending, essentially? >> exactly it slows down the cost of money. if you can't borrow as much, you might not buy the house, it cools the housing market down. if you can't pay the higher rate on your credit card, you don't buy it they're hoping this is strong enough we have low unemployment right now, balance sheets when it comes to people, individuals and businesses they are strong we saved during the pandemic we're in a very good place to weather this. >> if you're going to do this. as tom just reported it's a
