west of delta view golf course. bob redell is there and what are you learning from folks there? >> reporter: good morning. fortunately , we believe the worst has passed pick you can see there are some engines on jacqueline drive where the firefighters have been stationed at these homes trying to protect them from the wildfire burning in the hillside behind them. if you pan further left, you may be able to see the silhouette of the hills we're talking about as the sun is up. what you are not seeing, fortunately, is the fire and the smoke. this is what it looked like earlier. you can see why the fire department and the police department asked these people to evacuate. you had a lot of flames up on the ridge line. and now you can tell it's very windy out here. fortunately, that wind is blowing away from these homes so it blew the fire over the

ridge and not down the hill toward these homes. as far as we now there is no reports of any damage. >> like, there was an explosion. it woke up some of us but i guess around 2:00 or so and the police were here knocking on doors to evacuate. then we went out and saw the fire on the ridge right there. >> reporter: this is time-lapse video from wildfire.org. we believe the fire started around 1:40, 2:00 as you heard the neighbor mentioned and burned around 200 acres. you can see how it started quickly and took off from there. we believe that the worst is over because we are just not seeing the flames in the smoke. i did speak to a couple of neighbors who did hear a loud explosion around 1:40 last night. some are speculating if it was perhaps a transformer or something like that that blue and then ignited this. bob redell, today in the bay.
5:03 am
you've heard baba talking about the wind out there. what are you tracking in terms of conditions for the rest of the morning? >> the good news is we will see cooler weather today and the wind right now is still breezy, but not gusty. that's what we want to see when it comes to fire. we went to see the wind calming down because that place one of the biggest roles when it comes to the fight against them. 85 degrees right now but the wind in the west-southwest around 13 miles per hour. by 9:00 or 10:00, we bumped temperatures into the 60s but it will be cooler compared to the 90s we saw earlier this week. we also look at how the remainder of the bay area is doing. gusty conditions on the coastline yesterday. if you notice through the interior, it will remain between 10 and 15 miles per hour. that is good news in terms of not gusty but look at the humidity. 87% right now but it will get

own vice president, mike pence come into rejecting the 2020 presidential election results. brie jackson has been following those hearings for us. witnesses describe heated moments between trump and pants when this was going down. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. witnesses testified that former president donald trump pressured his vice president, mike pence, to reject electors, something pence did not have the authority to do. a vice president under pressure. >> what the president wanted the vice president to do was not just wrong, it was illegal and unconstitutional. >> reporter: during the third public hearing of the house committee investigating the capitol insurrection, testimony centered around former president trump's failed attempts to pressure his own vice president to overturn the 2020 election results, an illegal strategy pushed by trump attorney john eastman.
5:09 am
>> it is unambiguous that the vice president does not have the authority to reject electors. there is no suggestion of any kind that it does. >> reporter: trump's in a circle testifying about taunts and heated conversations after pence refused to carry out demands. >> it was a different tone that i'd heard him take with the vice president before. >> i remember hearing the word wimp come either he would call him a wimp and i remember he said you are a lamp. you will be a wimp. >> reporter: never before seen images show pence sheltering underground as writers storm the u.s. capital, making phone calls to pentagon and congressional leaders from bobby cummings within 40 feet of the event vice president as he was rushed to a secure location. >> we are fortunate for mr. pence's courage on january 6. our democracy came dangerously close to catastrophe. >> reporter: republicans called the hearings a distraction.

5:11 am
meteorologist vianey arana has more on those details and what we can expect and when. >> it will be cooler come up but then we get a change you want to know about heading into father's day. right now a great shot of san francisco. we have been waking up to mild conditions and notice we will get some high clouds into the afternoon and look at your daytime highs. only in the upper 60s and low 70s. this is below seasonable for this time of year. definitely cooler through concord. that's a 20 degrees difference compared to the 90s we saw earlier this week. 64, san francisco. i'll talk about your father's day weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. if you are looking for cheap gas in the bay area, sorry but here are some less expensive. $5.99 in cupertino in san leandro, $5.99 on washington avenue. and in alameda, $6.07.

we are back at 5:15 and we are following breaking news. a brush fire burning near a nature preserve in pittsburg. this is from overnight. you can see this time-lapse video showing the wind blowing and smoke and flicker from the fire. this was posted on twitter and you can see the orange glow from those flames over the hill. right now that fire has burned so far 200 acres. the fire in contra costa counter just tweeted that forward progress on the fire has been
5:16 am
stopped but they are working to contain the flames and protect those threatened homes. an evacuation order is in effect for areas north of jacklin drive. meteorologist vianey arana is keeping an eye on those conditions this morning and what's happening right now. >> and we are taking a close look at the temperatures and the wind. right now they are breezy from the west southwest at 13 come up but we could see the wind picked up later this afternoon. getting gustier through the coastline and interior valleys. temperatures remain cooler, but the fire index does still show nice recovery overnight. in as we head into the afternoon, things get drive for the interior. i will have the full forecast and the biggest impacts coming up. the fed this week raised interest rates to the highest levels in more than 30 years
5:17 am
and there are more hikes likely to come. i sat down with scott anderson, chief economist with bank of the west and we started a conversation with a big question. will this eventually lead to a recession? >> the fed doesn't want to say this but their track record on the slowing down the economy without a recession by raising interest rates isn't spectacular. i've only done it a handful of times, two or three times, in the last 30 years. the risk of recession is very high. i would put it at close to 50% right now. there is a narrow window for the bed to achieve their goals here but they need some help on the supply side and that will really depend on how the war in ukraine plays out and whether we get the supply chains going again in china. so the fed is really in uncertain territory and will need to be nimble and how they respond to the slowing economy. but i do think it will take some time. six or 12 months before you really start to see the risk of recession the greatest. >> so what should people do right now as we look at our retirement accounts? it's hard to look. >> it sure is.
5:18 am
one of the artifacts of the fed tightening financial conditions and raising interest rates as they're trying to take some of the exuberance out of the financial markets so they are no longer trying to prop up the stock market. we've seen the stock market already pricing in a significant slowdown in the economy come if not an outright recession next year. we've already seen the stock market down more than 20%. if you look at some of these speculative areas like the currency and nfts. we've seen declines of over 50% in places -- prices there. there's a lot of pain and people will see it and their 401(k). there's really no place to hide in the market. even in traditional bond funds, you've been probably losing money as interest rates go up. >> we can set budgets and cut our spending. it's hard for folks here in the bay area to cut that spending,
5:19 am
but is there anything else we can do to help make ends meet? >> you got to be careful and conservative. they tell you not to panic and sell all your stocks, may make sense to put more risky investments into cash at this point and make sure you've got your spending under control. make sure those credit card balances aren't too high here interest rates are probably going to get close to 20% in the next month or two those credit card balances. >> scott anderson, thank you for taking the time to talk to us. >> scott anderson and i'll talked for longer about the economy. he said there is one positive sign to look to and that might mean a recession could be avoided. you can watch that now on roku, amazon fire tv, amazon fire, apple tv by downloading the nbc bay area streaming app. 5:19.
5:20 am
another positive others temperatures heading into the weekend. meteorologist vianey arana has been tracking that and i like the cool days we had. >> indeed. we have a cold front cooling us off into the afternoon and into saturday. but we are really going to take a ride with these temperatures. a beautiful start in san francisco. notice more cloud cover. the writer does a nice job of painting a picture of that system to our north. as far as rain chances, not really looking good for us. we could see some drizzle to the north bay through tomorrow but aside from that the biggest factor will be the cloud cover and the drop in temperatures. currently waking up in the 50s across the region and the wind is pretty breezy. right now it's calm in the south bay and breezy through the tri-valley in the contra costa area, but by the afternoon we expect a nice slow picking up and that will create
5:21 am
gusty conditions, which is why we are analyzing the fire danger index. humidity will cover nicely overnight. the numbers look good in the 80s if i take the timeline forward and around 3:00 notice what happens. we dropped the load the 40%. we want to stay on top of 40% because we still have a lot of dry brush out there. toward friday we see a nice recovery and daytime highs today, and seasonable for this time of year. we should not be in the upper 60s and topping out in the low 70s but we will take it. san jose, 70. martinez, 69. san francisco, 64. unfortunately if you missed the drop mantra yesterday, we do not see any rain. no changes. 59.81% of the state of california remains under an extreme category and 100% of the state of california remains under some form of drought. what do the next seven days have been store for us?
5:22 am
will we get any relief in terms of rain? unfortunately, the rain is not looking too good and also the temperatures -- the warriors parade on monday in san francisco is when we expect to warm into the 70s in that area. we are looking to a smooth drive but i'm concerned about two travel times. right now the top of the screen, highway 4 about the speed limit out of antioch through pittsburg and bay point . great toward concord. that's in the perimeter of the fire. by the zero, a disabled vehicle reported out of the altamont pass but that did clear without incident. a great driver the early commute but it's friday and we have the summertime commute. watching a fire perimeter leland road with a fire south of there and east of bailey road. will give you a more exact perimeter and evacuation area coming up but i did want to show you that the commute is still smooth.
