rob, happy father's day. >> thank you very much. nice weather out there this morning, we do have some chilly temperatures, though, upper 40s to low 50s to start the morning, hazy skies, so a cool start, you certainly want a jacket as you head outside. by lunchtime, already seeing upper 70s inland, san francisco and oakland, highs in the upper 60s to mid 70s, 80s, south of downtown san jose, and the north bay, climbing to the 80s, so today's temperatures, about 5 to 7 degrees warmer than the highs we saw yesterday. get ready for the cool weather to move out. we are tracking big he's coming our way which can bring heat advisories, bayside temperatures possibly into the 80s and 90s, valleys, close to 100. we will take a look at that and what impact it can have on the warriors. coming up for tomorrow. that's coming up in about 15 minutes. right now, oakland fire crews remain on fire watch this morning, after a large

vegetation fire broke out overnight. new video from the citizen abbott, you can see those flames, really close to homes. the fire ignited a little before 1:00 this morning along covington street and marlow drive in sheffield village. close to state park. fire crews say at one point, the fire did reach for alarm status. according to this tweet by oakland fire, at this hour the flames are under control. it will be hot today. no one was hurt, no homes were evacuated, the cause is still under investigation. several people are still recovering this morning after a major crash involving a muni bus. happened in the marina district. we know at least six of the victims had to be taken to a hospital. officers have detained one person, as part of their investigation. nbc bait area stephanie reports.

>> this white vehicle, looked like it was going at least 89 to 90 miles an hour. >> this footage was taken footage seconds before this happened. >> all of a sudden we heard the loudest boom i've ever heard. it wasn't an outright explosion. >> witnesses tell us this white suv was speeding when it crashed into the bus on the fillmore and lombard intersection. >> it did a full 180. there was another one coming across the same time the driver jumped out, and wrapped the driver out . >> multiple vehicles were involved. several injured, including pedestrians. among the injured, at least six had to be taken to the hospital but are expected to be okay. >> multiple cars, people standing all around, shaking. there were people, there was blood pouring off of people.

it was a horrible scene. >> several people on social media say they saw the same vehicle driving erratically in the city in fact, a business owner on this block said his friend called him right after the crash, to find out what car was involved. >> the first thing he asked was was a white escalade? i said it was. he said i saw the car driving on the sidewalk at one point. >> officers could not confirm if the driver was impaired, nor if the car they were driving was actually theirs. they are still piecing everything together to find out what exactly happened. the community says yes, this crash was shocking, but common, so common that business owners like jordan took down their cameras. >> we had to take them down, there's always a answer, where people want to be footage and it was taking up too much of my time. its way too often. >> moving forward, children, 5

and younger are eligible to get a covid vaccine, that's news many parents across the bay area have been waiting for. yesterday, a cbc panel unanimously endorsed both vaccines for the youngest age group, shortly thereafter, the cdc director gave the final okay. this comes after an fda panel gave the green light friday. many pharmacies and pediatricians offices in california have already ordered their shots. governor newsom says, california has preordered 400,000 doses. since these vaccines are for younger people, everything about them is smaller and that includes the needles, that's part of the reason why the doses have to be shipped, and it'll take a day or two before vaccinations can begin. pfizer and moderna are making it easier for doctors and pharmacists to tell the vaccine apart from those intended for older age groups by giving them different color caps, and labels. it is absolutely stunning video, this morning, we are seeing this box truck, from a different angle. we told you

about this fire last week, the truck, burst into flames on 101 in the south bay, all of this, igniting hotspots and spot fires, as the driver tried to find a safe place to pull over. tom jensen is in sunnyvale, where the owner of the truck and his girlfriend are now trying to rebuild, because they were living out of the truck. >> a san jose man capture the burning box truck as the owner try to get off the southbound 101 at the montague expressway exit tuesday afternoon. the trucks owner mike lugea tells nbc the area, they couldn't get the fire out and he worried that two propane tanks would explode, possibly hurting someone or damaging dozens of vehicles around it on the roadway. >> i was trying to do the right thing and not get anybody else hurt by it . i wasn't doing any heroics. >> chp close the highway for an hour and firefighters were to

put out spot fires. and mike lugea sped past a gas station and down lafayette street to open cement plant lot where more firefighters worked on the truck and spot fires around it. >> they put those out real quick. they helped me clean up. >> this is the overheated power system and battery started the fire that torched everything that he and his girlfriend owned. >> we have nothing now. nothing. we have nothing, again . >> the couple have been living out of the vehicle but was able to work and save enough money to buy the truck and after months of work, mike had finally converted it into the couple's home. the estimate their losses, to be between 25,000 and $30,000. >> it was almost complete, it had a side door, i was proud of it, it looked good .

>> he built it to be really nice, the bathroom, everything. it's all gone. >> the red cross gave the couple a few hundred dollars to help them with short-term needs. >> it'll get better pay >> after just one day, nearly $5000 in donations have poured into a gofundme page that was set up to help rebuild their home. police are investigating a deadly drive-by shooting in fremont. happened late friday night at mallory avenue and fremont boulevard. officers say they received a call about shots fired, between two cars around 10:00 p.m. when they arrived, they found the car crashed into the center median, with the driver, dead inside. investigators say they have no leads on the shooter, nor a motive . meanwhile in walnut creek, police are looking for three men who pulled off a smash and grab at macy's. investigators say the three men enter the store and started smashing jewelry display cases with hammers. happened early yesterday morning. they made off with high-end watches, they sped away in a

white, older model honda sedan. macy's is still estimating the total loss. this is the first year that juneteenth is being celebrated as a federal holiday. it commemorates the emancipation of the final enslaved black americans. there are several celebrations happening across the bay area today. if you're headed to oaklands juneteenth celebration at lake merritt, large crowds are expected, as a result, you can see on this map, the city of oakland is closing lakeshore avenue between macarthur and east 18th street. no parking will be allowed. lakeshore also will be closed at beacon street, brooklyn, wayne and hanover avenues. we have much more ahead on today in the bay, coming up, we take you live to washington, d.c., for our weekly interview with chuck todd who has a preview of this

welcome back, it's time for our weekly discussion with chuck todd, nbc news political director and moderator of meet the press. after the last week, or over the last week, we have learned some really surprising new revelations from the committee that's investigating the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. some including vice president mike pence, what stands out to you the most at this point. i know you have a guest from the committee this morning? >> it's how much they themselves, how the trump inner circle, those that were pushing to test the limits of what could be challenged here in this election, how much they already knew what they were trying to do was likely illegal, definitely unconstitutional, and they kept pushing it anyway. and the number of times that

they came back at mike pence, and it was such an intense campaign, to try to convince him to put a halt to the certification process, and i'll be honest with you, kira, watching in real time, you know, it was angry our coverage at the time, and we certainly saw the pressure being exerted on mike pence in real time. i don't think the extent to which it took place over days, before then, and the fact that his own team worried about violence, that would interrupt, if any attempt to do this was made, just how much they knew this was what was happening, it could turn south in a hurry. i think that's been pretty powerful. we will see how big of an audience is receiving this. but i think it's been pretty powerful to have trump and pence folks telling us the story, and not reporters or

democratic politicians. >> life, literally being at risk during that day and the days leading up to it. i also want to ask you about the federal reserve announcing the biggest interest rate hike and decades. in an attempt to combat searching inflation. you have a guest, who was the first to predict inflation would rise. what is former treasury secretary summer saying about this. will it help? >> well, it's necessary. it was interesting, at the end of our interview, i essentially was saying, okay, now that the federal reserve is acting, what's the bigger risk, that they do too much overreacting bring us to a hard you know, basically, we slammed the brakes, right? or, are you still concerned they do too little. and he essentially said, you know, he compared it to somebody taking antibiotics when they are sick. you don't stop taking the antibiotic the second you start feeling better, you finish the prescription the doctor gave you. and so, he was essentially saying, his fear, still, is that the risk is that the fed will do too little, and that we

everything is all clear and safe to consume again. no word on what originally caused the height nitrate levels. yellowstone national park will partially reopen this week, after catastrophic flooding closed the park last week. look at that. parts of yellowstone are literally cut off from neighboring towns, with bridges and roads, washed out. the park service is visitors will be able to come in the southern entrance but they want to limit taurus, so they are doing that by only allowing cars and motorcycles with even license plate numbers on even days of the month and ought numbers on the odd days. speaking of yellowstone, many of us are planning trips this summer, and we know that because our consumer team is hearing your complaints when things go wrong. consumer investigator chris is here with two recent cases in which our teams helped viewers recover the money they've spent on travel. >> anna in sonoma recently contacted telemundo, she booked a flight from san francisco to

mexico city but when she tried to fly, the airline said, someone else had already used her take it. anna had to buy a new ticket, on the spot at a sky high price, 1780 bucks. she expected the airline to investigate what happened with her original ticket and get a refund of the new ticket but, that didn't happen, until she called arlen fernandez, he landed her a refund. at nbc bay area we responded to jennifer in san jose. she booked flights with online travel agency, then, counseled them, the agency gave her a $459 credit, but when she went to use it, the airline said, it was no good. so she asked us to investigate. the travel agency talks about agent ever, and got that 459 bucks back to jennifer. if you hit a travel snag let our teams know. have a great

weekend. thank you, good to see you. new this morning, right now, an estimated 6 1/2 million people, ages 65 and older, are living with alzheimer's in the united states. the numbers expected to grow. but there is new research shining a light on prevention. researchers at usc, are still actively recruiting people to change the future of the disease. as part of a four-year global study, partially funded by the national institutes of health. researchers are looking to sign up a diverse set of people, who are often underrepresented in clinical trials. data shows people of color, are the highest at risk for the disease. the study will use biological risk factors and brain scans, to test for alzheimer's and intervene early with a drug that could slow or stall the disease. trending this morning, father's day is today, and the popular kids show is honoring

what's a little bit interesting, this may take you by surprise if you are on santa cruz, you've got 40s to start things off this morning, hazy skies out towards dublin. 52 right now. maybe upper 70s and low 80s on, patchy low clouds, earlier on the golan great ridge. you may need a light jacket for your juneteenth or father's day plans, then by lunchtime, 70s to mere 80 out towards fairfield. it will stay relatively cool to mild bayside with 60s and 70s from san francisco to oakland. 80s down towards morgan hill, tri-valley, and into the north bay, so a little bit warmer here, to wrap up the weekend. all eyes on san francisco tomorrow, we got the championship parade, 11:20 a.m., already seeing 70 so if you're going to stick around in san francisco for the entire

parade which goes through about 2:00, we will get into the mid- 70s tomorrow and as you know, downtown san francisco, it does feel extra warm outside, when you are the mid-70s and 80s. monday will be warming up, still seeing 70s and 80s bayside as the inland valley start to climb into the low to mid 90s but check out tuesday. now we are in the triple digits out towards the tri-valley, upper 90s from san jose down towards morgan hill and santa rosa. it's different, the bayside locations could see 80s and 90s, so this forecast, sets up, we could be talking about heat advisories for the central bank and possibly excessive heat warnings for the inland valleys and it looks like another hot day and went into wednesday with a hint of cooling around the bay, by midweek. another thing to watch, second half of the week could be tropical moisture coming out from a weakening tropical system, that's shown in this area of cream, now the issue is this, we are not expecting rain but with the hot temperatures and the potential of lightning, we don't want to see that set

up. so stay tuned, you may notice extra high clouds coming in, as we get into thursday and friday. here's a look at your 7-day forecast, san francisco, climbing to the 80s, you certainly want those areas that do have air conditioning around the peninsula in san francisco and bayside locations, monday through wednesday, it'll be warm , obviously tuesday is the warmest day, trending cooler heading towards next weekend, and valley temperatures, very likely, will see at least five days of 90 degree temperatures. this will last longer. hottest days coming up tuesday and wednesday with cooling, just in time for next weekend. >> i just remembered, i realized why that friends music kept playing is because our director aaron is obsessed with friends. >> it's just going to keep going. at 7:22 right now, giving all kids the chance to play, no matter their abilities, that's why a local couple created an all inclusive playground.

dutiful day. meteorologist and father, meterologist rob mayeda is in for a look at our microclimate forecast. >> thank you, for all bay area cats, it's a chilly start, you mentioned the hazy sky. we've got 40s and 50s around the bay area, oakland, mid-50s, temperatures through 8:00, in the 50s, but warming nicely, for any plans outside around lunchtime, 70s for most places, staying mild, bayside, with upper 60s around san francisco, mid-70s towards oakland, closer to 80 and san jose, considering saturday's highs were only in the mid-70s, today technically, is the start of a warming trend that's really going to kick in as we get to the next couple of days. the cool pattern that brought snow showers toward the sierra last evening, is starting to lift out, being replaced by the heat. we will talk about how long the

we spoke with her yesterday, and honor of international surfing day. >> it just broke my heart, being from the town, seeing this event not being pulled off. it's one of the most spectacular things to happen around here. it has a huge impact on the town economically. >> part of her plan, is for mavericks to have an equal number of men and women in the lineup. she says, gender equity is something she wanted to make sure she brought to the contest but it's also now required by state rules. >> we do need to have an equal field of men and women competing so we need an equal number of competitors and heaps, as well as equal prize purse, not only is this something i wanted to do as an organizer, it's encoded in state regulation. i'm super excited to see it take hold. >> the bottom line, is if the swells are big enough, that determines whether the contest is called. we could see the return of the mavericks competition early next year. 7:39, still to come on today in the bay, a reopening, much sooner than expected. in a matter of days, yellowstone will welcome back

the city of gilroy said d it's water is now safe to drink again. on friday, the city sent out a warning after high levels of nitrate were found in one of the wells during routine testing. after further testing yesterday, the city says everything is all clear and safe to consume. no word yet on what originally caused the high nitrate levels. yellowstone national park will partially reopen this week, after the catastrophic flooding and closing the park last week. parts of yellowstone are literally cut off from neighboring towns, with bridges and roads washed out. the park service says that visitors will be able to come into the southern entrance but

they want to limit taurus, so they will do that by only allowing cars and motorcycles with even license plate numbers on even days of the month, and audit plate numbers on the odd days. it'll be a nice day to get outdoors, for hotter temperatures will be just around the corner. right now, 54 degrees, san jose, hazy skies around the bay area. you are seeing some of that in the tri-valley, 52 currently in dublin, and earlier, patches of low clouds near the golden gate bridge have gone away. starting off mostly in the upper 40s to low 50s. hazy skies, and temperatures actually warming pretty quickly, by as early as 12:00 today. it'll be warmer than the high temperatures we saw on saturday, fairfield, near 80 at noon, upper 60s, san francisco, 79 degrees in san jose with 80s and reach for south san jose, santa cruz, looking pretty good today, 75 degrees, championship

parade time, for the warriors, the temperature trend, actually for monday in san francisco, has been going up a little bit. looks like low 70s around the start, and towards the finish, we will see temperatures in the mid-70s, monday, the better of the two days, we are about to see to say will get downright hot. there, you see, 70s and 80s from sense to go to oakland, now, upper 80s and san jose, santa cruz, into the 80s, tuesday, looks to be the hottest day of the week. i think we will see heat advisories for much of the bay area. bayside temperatures in the 80s and 90s from san francisco to oakland, 90s into san jose, upper 90s probable around downtown san jose, tri-valley, concord, fairfield, close to 100 degrees.

very likely, wednesday, also seeing the upper 90s inland, mid-90s around san jose with just a hint of cooling into san francisco and oakland, seeing those numbers in the 70s and 80s. another thing to watch, the high clouds. the source of the clouds will be a weakening tropical storm off the coast of baja, california. watch how the area of green get thrown northward towards california. that system could manage to bring some moisture northward whichwill have to watch, notice the futurecast, for the central sierra and southern sierra, that could bring a slight chance of thunder, which we have to watch for, obviously with the hot and dry conditions, to see if that involves any lightning, but behind that, we should see cooling temperatures, as we head towards next weekend. a warm week around san francisco, and we will likely stay at least in the 70s through friday, slightly cooler temperatures as we head into next weekend and inland valleys, likely peak with those temperatures tuesday and wednesday, with more clouds and a little bit of cooling heading into next weekend, so the heat, sticking around for a while, and also impacting bayside locations for the middle part of the week. >> at 7:45, much more ahead,

today, june 19, marks juneteenth, which will be celebrated as a federal holiday for the very first time tomorrow. it commemorates the emancipation of the final enslaved black americans. among many celebrations taking place across the bay area this weekend, is an art show in san francisco's bayview neighborhood. we explain how even the studio illustrates the historic struggle of black americans. >> at san francisco southeast edge, that came building stands as relics of the old navy shipyard, which once drew black workers from around the nation. >> it was always, at that point, very much and african american neighborhood.

welcome back, here's a look at the e top stories we are following this morning. oakland crews are on fire watch this morning, after a large vegetation fire broke out overnight. we have videos from the citizen app, the flames, so close to the structures on the hillside, it ignited a little before 1:00 this morning along covington street. fire crews at one point, the incident reached for alarm status. according to this tweet by oakland fire, right now, flames are under control, but crews plan to be on the scene throughout the day and this

evening, given the steep terrain and vegetation. no one was hurt or homes evacuated but the cause is still under investigation. turning now to kids under the age of five to, now eligible to get the covid vaccine. yesterday cbc panel unanimously endorsed both pfizer and moderna's vaccines for young children. shortly thereafter, the cdc director gave the final okay. this all comes after the fda panel gave the green light on friday. many pharmacies and pediatrician offices in california already have ordered the shots. governor newsom says, california has preordered 400,000 doses. as we've been mentioning, this is the first year juneteenth is being celebrated as a federal holiday. it commemorates the emancipation of the enslaved black americans. there are several celebrations happening across the bay area today, and one of them being oakland's juneteenth celebration at lake merritt. large crowds are expected, so as a result, the city of oakland is closing lakeshore avenue between brooklyn and
