right now at 5:30, an unreal site caught on camera. when this box truck burned, someone lost a home. the owner speaks to us about what happened. and also another surprise visit to ukraine. this time ben stiller. why he made the trip to the war- torn country. >> and how our changing climate and urban development are creating a perfect mix for disaster. the news at 5:00 starts right now. thanks for joining us. it was a saga that played out in the south bay and lit up social media. absolutely stunning video shared wildly on-line from this box truck fire. we told you about this earlier this week, the truck burst into flames, spawning spot fires, as the driver tried to find a safe spot to turn over some put out

those flames. >> tom jenson met the owner of that truck in sunnyvale, where the driver and his girlfriend are trying to rebuild, because that truck was their home. it's a story you'll see only on nbc bay area. >> reporter: a san jose man captured the burning box truck as it's owners tried to get off the southbound 101 at the montague expressway exit. the truck's owner tells nbc bay area he couldn't get the fire out and worried two propane tanks in the box would explode, possibly hurting someone or damaging dozens of vehicles around him on the roadway. >> yeah, i was just trying to do the right thing and not bit anybody else hurt by it. so i wasn't doing any heroics. i was just trying to get it out of the way. >> reporter: chp closed the highway for about an hour. he sped past a sunnyvale gas station to an open cement plant lot where more firefighters worked on his truck and spot fires around it. >> they put those out real

quick, and they helped me cleanup afterwards. these guys were fantastic. >> reporter: he said an overheated power system and batteries started the fire that torched everything that he and his girlfriend owned. >> we had nothing else. we have nothing, gain. >> reporter: the couple was able to work out of a vehicle, but was able to work and save enough money to buy the truck, and mike had finally converted sweet the couple's home. he estimates their losses to be between $25,000, and $30,000. >> i was proud of it. it looked good. >> yes, it was. he built it to be really nice. a bathroom and everything. but all gone. >> reporter: the red cross gave the couple a few hundred dollars to help them with short- term needs. >> yeah, they're supportive, and it will get better. >> reporter: in one day, nearly $5,000 in donations have

came into a gofundme page that was set up to help rebuild their home. >> tom, thank you. an intense fire this morning ata southern california high-rise. 25 fire engines were called out to help fight this fire in a six-story building in san bernardino county. the fire started on the fourth floor of that building. that's actually used for county code enforcement. thankfully no one was injured. the cause is still under investigation. turning to the war in ukraine. with peace talks stalled, negotiators are asking for more weapons. things have slowed to a weekly check, and there is no talk being made on those peace talks. the suction calling on the u.s. and nato allies to provide long range artillery, and radar to counter russia's missiles and rockets. president biden announced another billion dollars in

weapons for kyiv. actor ben stiller was spotted in lviv ukraine today. he is a good will ambassador, according to a social media post. stiller traveled to poland and then visited the ukrainian border to meet with the refugees there. he said he wants to share refugee stories and amplify calls for solidarity. angelina jolie and bono have also made stops. wildfire season is now all year long in california, but the golden state not the only area at risk for this kind of destruction. many of us live in the wildland urban interface, and it's putting our lives and hopes in harm's way. >> the rush to escape. families forced to grab everything and go. >> >> reporter: think wildfires are just a west coast thing? >> fire has begun destroying homes in orange county.

>> reporter: actually one in three americans live in at-risk areas. many just don't know it. >> a bit frustrating from my standpoint, because so many people feel like, oh, that's just a forest problem. oh, that's a, you know, forest fire, but yet we forget that they're happening right here. >> reporter: he points to a hilltop outside boise where the tabletop fire showed the risk of wildfire in the wild land urban interface, basically where urban development meets nature. the marshall fire in colorado, a thousand homes burned. 2016 fire in east tennessee, 2,000 homes burned. or the campfire, nearly 14,000 homes burned. >> people would be really surprised. it's not just the folks that are up in the brush. it's the folks that are -- if you look at a map of boise, the

entire north end is in an ember zone, and it's up to a mile away from the brush. >> reporter: britney is talking about homes that people think are safer because they're not at the edges of the wui, but they are in an area where winds are driving wildfires, and america's housing crunch is driving this problem. >> when you have restrictions on building in the urban core, and a place is growing, it needs more housing for people to live in. all right, where will that housing go? and a lot of times, it gets built around the edges of an urban area, areas that tend to be at higher fire risk, in this intermission, closer to wild lands and hazard. >> at riskfactor came, you can search your address for your wildfire risk. that's important, because risks impact your ability to get or even keep insurance. >> what i have been experiencing 234 idaho is

getting phone calls from homeowners saying they have been dropped. more and more of those phone calls are happening, and this is where they're headed, we believe, is they're just going to -- we can't afford to do this. very difficult try to go find, you know, a new company. >> it's important to note that beyond california or texas, the state's with some of the most houses in the wui are florida, north carolina, even pennsylvania. first street foundation counted nearly 72 million homes across america with at least some level of fire risk, and that means more americans need to start creating defensible space around their homes and have an evacuation plan. we have resources for both at lx.com. >> you can find that full story on lx.com, or watch it an 11-5, or xfinity channel 185. still ahead tonight, taking

built to account for children with disabilities. >> this remarkable couple is introduced to us in tonight's bay area proud. >> reporter: both retired school teacher. combined, the years they have spent helping children? well, without embarrassing them, let's just say it's been many, many decades, but just because they stopped working with children didn't mean they stopped working for them. the magical bridge morgan hill play ground is not even a month old. the grand opening of the all- inclusive play space taking place just a few weeks ago, but the dream behind this park, well, that goes back many years. back to when shirley was still teaching school. >> main lip kind are departen and first grade. >> reporter: sherry has many wonderful memories from her 30- year career, but one medical la

collie melancholy one that has stuck with her. the times where her students with disabilities would stand by her while other children played because the playground wasn't built for them. >> i just felt so bad that they didn't have anything that in some cases that they could play any during recess. >> so we had lots of minutes of the meeting and things that we discussed. >> reporter: it remained just a memory for shirley, until she and husband ron saw a story about an all-inclusive playground in a nearby city and thought why not our city? it couldn't be that hard, right? >> i thought two months. >> yeah. >> not -- >> eight years. >> not eight years. [ laughter ] >> reporter: they threw themselves into planning, cajoling, but mostly fun raising. ron literally growing door-to- door asking for donations. >> that's how we did it.

i went to righty, kiwanis, businesses. >> reporter: they eventually landed large donations from the city, county, the junior league of san jose, and countless individuals. the final tally? well, we'll let ron tell you. >> $6.25 million. >> reporter: and so when it came to cut the ribbon on the brand-new park, you can bet everyone wanted shirley and ron with their hands on the scissors. there to open up a whole new world of possibilities for children of any ability. >> eight years in the making. that's incredible. >> they're getting me misty- eyed in the middle of a newscast. starts to return to the bay area, but right now it's really nice. breezy in dublin at 81 degrees. oakland into the 70s. still 71 degrees and a west wind coming across the way at 14. hazy skies in san francisco. 66 and hazy skies also part of the weather story, as we're going to see maybe the potential for some "spare the air" days by the middle part of the week. right now, air quality moderate. highest levels will be the inlet east bay, and moderate range. good air quality around the central south bay. tomorrow increasing high clouds just after sunrise and clearing skies heading into the afternoon, and more of the conditions we had today, just probably boost the temperatures up another five or 10 degrees everyone land. we had 40s and 50s morning temperatures over the last couple of morning. tomorrow, 50s and low 60s to start the day. seeing mid-80s by noon inland. 70s from san francisco over to oakland, near 80 tomorrow.

58 in san jose. watch what happens tuesday. san jose now 96 degrees. san francisco into the 80s, and 90s from oakland down into fremont. wednesday those numbers come down a little bit, though increasing clouds, which we'll talk about the source for that coming up. and, also, still, wednesday, inland areas, inland east bay area south of san jose, even with just that slight cooling, still seeing those highs in the mid-90s, but pay side not quite as hot, 70s and 80s as we get into wednesday and thursday. we'll have to watch wednesday and thursday on the radar, as this area of low pressure off the coast may help to stare some of this from a weakening system into the south. there's a chance given that mid- level moisture and some heating below, we could see isolated thundershowers during the afternoon around the sierra, and there's a potent special of that may try to wrap bang over towards the bay area by thursday.

now, it would be nice to get showers out of it. the problem is, three to four days of hot and dry conditions and a chance of lightning, you know how it goes sometimes in the summer. it's something we have to watch for, especially with fire conditions as dry as they are across northern california. so san francisco, warmest days tuesday and wednesday, as we head towards pride weekend, looks really nice. temperatures around 70 in san francisco. inland areas, staying into the 90s through friday, and a little bit of coming as we head into the weekend. peak heat arriving tuesday and wednesday, and keeping an eye on that radar, especially around the sierra, as we approach the middle part off the week. back to you. it was a tough debate even before inflation. should you rent, or should you buy? we're going to take a look

pixar new film lightyear had a solid open, but fell

short of most estimates. it brought in $51 million in the united states alone. that's the best an animated film has done since the pandemic began. however, experts thought it would bring in between $75 million and $85 million. the film was banned in some countries because it features a gay couple. you can watch that story and interview on our website, nbcbayarea.com. >> now to our ongo series. priced out. the largest interest rate hike in nearly 30 years. they are expecting more rate hikes to come. that means the cost of loans, especially home mortgages are going to go up. so how does this affect potential home buyers? vicky is here to break down an old debate. should you rent or buy. >> from wall street to main street, all eyes are on the federal reserve. >> just about everything we buy on credit will get more

expensive. >> reporter: as promsed, the federal reserve is raising interest rates to tame inflation, but that's only inflaming the hearts of would- be homebuyers. average 30-year home mortgage rates now top 5%. that's up from less than 3% a year ago. and home prices continue their rise, with the median home price nearly $430,000 last quarter. >> i was actually considering just getting a cute little single family starter home. >> reporter: a 24-year-old nurse in atlanta has been looking to buy a home. >> i kind of put myself into a situation where do i want to buy a house or just continue renting? >> reporter: that decision made even tougher because the cost of vent also going up. nationwide, one and two bedroom apartments up more than 25% from a year ago. demil a's rent for her one bedroom rent in atlanta increased from 1475 a month to $2055. >> i couldn't do that.

i thought let me just see about getting a house. >> reporter: she saved up enough for a down payment, about $15,000, but said she kept getting outbid, so she put a pause on her home search. >> i want to bring in a financial adviser who has been listening in with us as you explained your situation. winnie. what is she doing right? >> i love the fact that she is comfortable talking about her finances, first of all. the other thing is she is really focused on what she can afford and not going beyond her budget. haven't she said she was smart to pause her home search and you should only buy if you have a 20% down payment, plus an additional 6% for closing costs. plan staying in the same home for at least five years, and have about six months pay in savings for emergency repairs. those are steep entries for ownership, but said you can save money while renting. to do so, spend no more than 30% of your honor income on rent. negotiate a longer lease, maybe two years instead of one to lock in your rental rates.

get a roommate to offset increasing rent, and if you have a parking spot or space in a garage, rent it out for extra income, and reduce other major expenses like gas by carpooling, biking, using public transit, or down sizing your vehicle. >> you don't need that fancy cartwright now, because our number one financial goal is to get you into the home that you really want. >> if you can't afford the house of your dreams, don't let the rising rates scare you away. >> even though the rate is a little lier than a few years gee, it's still significantly lower than historical mortgage rates. ? very important advice there. the bay area no area to housing issues, right? our investigative team dug into the crisis, found some solutions. you can see their answers to the problem everyone is dealing with there our streaming series overpriced, overwhelmed, and over it. you can download the nbc bay area streaming app.
