canceled that according tonight aware who also reported more than 5,000 delays and more than 900 flight cancelations on sunday the travel chaos is being fueled by the airlines, still recovering from big storms and a shortage of airline workers on top of a travel surge. if you're traveling today, check with your carrier before you head to the airport. breaking overnight, a 15-year-old boy was killed and three people injured after a shooting in washington, d.c., authorities say. among those injured is a police officer who was shot in the leg. the shooting happened at what police describe as an unpermitted music gathering. police shut down the event after a fight and an apparent stampede left people injured. shortly after, gunfire erupted, sending more people fleeing. the name of the deceased teenager has not been released the injured were stabilized at medical facilities, officials said police are looking for one suspect who is still on the run. law enforcement have recovered several firearms at the scene. none of them belong to the suspect.

now to a deadly shooting at a family barbecue in san antonio. police say two people were killed there and five more injured on saturday night when at least one suspect pulled up and opened fire. authorities also said multiple children were inside the house at the time of the shooting but thankfully were month the injured. police are working on identifying the shooter or shooters. the january 6th hearings resume this week the first hearing on tuesday will focus on accusations that former president trump leaned on state officials in an attempt to alter election tallies among the witnesses who will testify is brad raffensperger, the georgia secretary of state raffensperger was on the january 2nd telephone call where the then-president asked him to, quote, find nearly 12,000 trump votes to overturn president-elect biden's win. it is unclear if the committee will ultimately make a criminal referral to the justice department, but there are new tensions between the committee and the doj. officials say the panel has not handed over witness transcripts from their investigations.

committee chair bennie thompson says they intend to share all interviews but stress that the curt hearings take priority. over the weekend, millions of people across the country celebrated juneteenth. this was the first year the federal holiday was observed commemorating the countless that have been oppressed and impacted by racism. nbc's chris pollone joins from us d.c. with more on what these celebrations mean for communities all across this country. chris, good morning. >> yeah, philip, good morning. across the country, juneteenth celebrations kicked into high gear over the weekend, commemorating the day in 1865 when enslaved people in galveston, texas, learned they were free, 2 1/2 years after president lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation. it didn't become a federal holiday until last year with a stroke of president biden's pen. in ft. worth, texas, dr. opal lee head a 2 1/2-mile walk to start the juneteenth celebration there. she's knownas the grandmother of juneteenth, a leading

advocate of making it a federal holiday. in chicago, the juneteenth market event put a spotlight on black-owned businesses in buffalo, new york, site of one of the nation's largest juneteenth festivals, the state's governor paused to remember the victims of last month's racist attack at a crowded grocery store. in washington, the national museum of african american history and culture has been holding juneteenth commemorations in person and online >> i hope people understand not only the importance of juneteenth to african american culture but also its relevance to all of american culture and history. >> reporter: also this weekend, the national archives museum is displaying the original emancipation proclamation alongside the juneteenth order in a statement, president biden said great nations don't ignore their most painful moments, they confront them to grow stronger philip >> wise words there. chris, thank you so much some relief at the pump may be coming for americans. treasury secretary janet yellen said in an interview the biden

administration is considering a federal gas tax holiday which could save drivers just over 18 cents a gallon. >> the news comes as the national average for a gallon of gas dipped below $5 over the weekend. that's according to aaa. 17 states are still paying over $5 california with the highest price at the pump, nearly $6.50 a gallon. a new policy banning transgender women from competing in women's international swimming events goes into effect today. for more on this, we bring in nbc's janis mackey frayer who's live in beijing. >> reporter: good morning. this is a big decision from fina, the governing organization of swimming. the vote 71.5% in favor of this new gender inclusion policy which permits only transgender athletes who made the transition before age 12 to compete in women's categories this vote came about after

months of consultations. it goes into effect today. and it effectively bans transgender athletes from competing in women's aquatic events if they've experienced male puberty fina oversees competition for high-level swimming, water polo, diving, high diving, as well as artistic and open water swimming events fina's president said that all swimmers are welcome, but this is about protecting the rights of athletes but also protecting competitive fairness he's talking about creating an open category for swimmers and other athletes who fail to meet the criteria for the women's and men's categories much of this debate came into the spotlight with lia thomas, who made history as the first transgender woman to win an ncaa swimming title but did so with some controversy, especially from their own teammates who said they had an unfair advantage. this new policy could prevent thomas from competing at the

paris olympics other elite sports are following suit by revising their eligibility rules, including cycling. it's getting a lot of backlash critics who say that to enforce these policies will mean having to seriously violate the privacy and human rights of athletes who just want to compete >> janis, thank you for the breakdown, appreciate it. wwe chairman and ceo vince mcmahon appeared in character on friday speaking to a live crowd just hours after announcing that he would step back from his roles as the wwe board of directors investigate alleged misconduct nbc's vaughn hillyard has more. >> reporter: a shakeup in world wrestling entertainment. >> no one there is bigger than a wwe. >> reporter: bigwig vince mcmahon is stepping back from his responsibilities as chairman and ceo of the wwe, according to a press release, as a special committee on the board of directors and an outside firm investigates his alleged

misconduct his daughter, stephanie mcmahon, will take over in the interim. >> do the right thing for business every single time >> reporter: "the wall street journal" broke the story open when it published claims of a $3 million hush money settlement to hide an alleged affair between mcmahon and a former employee. the "journal" citing documents and people familiar with the matter went on to report the woman was a pairlegal for the wwe hired in 2019, and the deal struck in january was intended to prevent her from talking about the relationship or making critical statements about mcmahon. a spokesman for the wwe telling the paper, the relationship was consensual and mcmahon's lawyers say in a letter to the "wall street journal" that the paralegal made no claims of harassment and she was not paid by wwe when she left the company. according to the release, mcmahon will retain his role and responsibilities related to wwe's creative content part of that creative content, a special appearance by mr. mcmahon himself.
