coast. it is the longest day of the year. the first official day of summer. it arrived at 5:14 a.m. and it feels like summer. lot of the country just blanketed with extreme heat. apparently not going away any time soon. dylan is up right and early with us with the forecast. in the meantime in washington round 4 of the january 6 hearings is happening today. one focus, a plan to send fake electors to the nation's capitol to stop the transfer of power. >> and the supreme court justice set to release a number of opinions on high profile cases. big question, will it include the mississippi abortion ban. that is a decision that could overturn roe v. wade. we're live with the latest on both of those major washington stories. but we're going to start with new details on the delayed police response to the shooting in uvalde, texas that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers. a just released image from inside the school shedding more light on just how well armed the officers were that day and yet still did not storm the gunman for more than an hour. gabe gutierrez here with the

latest. >> reporter: according to that new report it appears officers at the scene had heavier fire power and more protective gear than previously known but no clear orders to end the attack. the new revelation set to be presented at a public texas senate hearing later today. this is the first look inside robb elementary during the uvalde massacre. the still image from surveillance video reviewed by the austin american statesmen but not confirmed by nbc news. appears to show multiple officers armed with rifles and at least one ballistic shield in a hallway 19 minutes after the gunman started shooting. according to the statement's review of materials. >> investigators really believe at this point based on my understanding that that was certainly enough fire power to try to take on the gunman. >> reporter: so why did officers wait nearly another hour to storm the classroom? >> whether you have the equipment or not, you just go

in. and that never happened here. >> reporter: separately the texas tribune released a detailed time line overnight based on video footage and investigative materials not confirmed by nbc news. according to that the shooter opened fire closest to classrooms 111 and 112. several minutes later, chief arredondo phoned dispatch requesting more fire power. we all have pistols he said. and this guy's got a rifle. >> the question as to why they were not directed to go in and who should have been giving that direction, i think those are questions the investigators, state, federal and local are going to be focusing on for a while. >> reporter: victims families demanding accountability at a school board meeting in uvalde last night, including the daughter of teacher irma garcia who was killed and joe garcia who died of a heart attack days later.

>> i need you to know the horrifying manner in which my mother was murdered and taken from us completely shattered our hearts. but made my dad's stop. the pain of losing the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, was too much for him to bear. >> reporter: community members also called for embattled police chief pete arredondo to resign. earlier this month he responded to criticism saying he did not instruct police to avoid a breech. and that he never considered himself the scene's incident commander. arredondo did not respond to our request for comment overnight. the uvalde, texas council is scheduled to consider later today whether to grant him a leave of absence from future council. what's shaping up to be a very busy day in washington. the january 6 committee set to hold its next public hearing focusing on the trump campaign's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election at the state level. and all eyes will be on the supreme court later this morning. the nation awaiting several

major rulings. we've got two reports. we'll start with nbc's garrett haake. good morning. walk us through today. >> reporter: you think of today's hearing as a prequel to we saw last thursday the committee will say the trump campaign went looking for votes to try to find votes to overturn the election results or find fake electors to come to washington and lie about who had won in some of these states. today will be focused specifically on georgia and arizona. where it was republican local elected officials who the committee will say stood up to the pressure campaign. in georgia much was reported in real time, including the call from former president trump to the secretary of state pressuring him to find votes, but the arizona portion of this, less well covered. lot of that is going to be new to lot of ears today. >> and some are asking what this will all amount to

is there any chance of a criminal referral of the former president or any of his aides? >> well the committee hasn't made a final decision on a criminal referral. but when you talk to these committee members or listen to their interviews, many of them do believe that former president trump committed a crime either in the effort to subvert election results leading up to january 6 or potentially inciting the attack on that day itself that said, a criminal referral from the committee may not carry much weight. and one committee member said last week that he didn't want to insult the intelligence of the department of justice by walking an indictment down to the building and laying it on the doorstep federal and state level prosecutors are paying close attention to these hearings. they want to present the best case possible not just to the american people but to the prosecutors who might be making decisions in the future. >> nbc news will bring you louvre coverage of today's hearing starting 1:00 eastern on many of these stations and nbc news now

another hot button issue closely watched in washington and beyond a supreme court ruling on abortion that could come as early as this morning. nbc's chief white house correspondent peter alexander joins us first when might that decision come down and what can we expect >> it could come any day with the court expected to overturn roe v. wade ending the constitutional right to an abortion if that happen, 13 states already have trigger laws that would immediately ban abortions. other states like california have been preparing to serve as safe havens of sorts for abortion rights. offering support and legal services to women who travel from out of state for an abortion, hoda. >> and there is pressure on the white house to do something ahead of this decision to take action what is the latest on that >> that's for sure abortion rights advocates want the president -- they want president biden to take executive actions that would expand reproductive health

services on federal lands and to increase access to abortion pills. the fight over abortion pills or medications really is heating up groups want those to be some states are passing new laws to restrict access to those pills but many abortion rights groups want those pills to get as simple as any prescription drug the president is considering action but white house officials would not detail his plans and to be clear there is not much any president can do by executive order. consumers cutting back as prices continue to skyrocket nbc's sam brock is in miami with a closer look. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president biden says a recession is potentially avoidable, even with fresh data out today that

may suggest otherwise. and many businesses will tell you they have been taking a haircut. i'm at the spot in miami right now. this barbershop which typically saw people come in every week is now seeing the same customers biweekly or even monthly businesses and consumers alike are modifying their spending a free falling wall street after the s&p suffered its worst weekly drop since early in the pandemic and runaway inflation continues to crush consumers president biden is trying to project confidence >> there is nothing inevitable about a recession. >> but he's also considering asking lawmakers for a temporary pause on the federal gas tax ahead of july fourth with a record 42 million americans expected to hit the road for the holiday weekend, and gas still hovering around $5 a gallon the move, which requires congressional approval could save drivers about 18 cents a

gallon >> i hope i have a decision based on data i'm looking for by the end of the week. >> reporter: soaring prices at the pump and the grocery store and the airways. results in changing consumer behavior like visits to the barbershop or he pays up hair stylist ahmed owns a salon in virginia and says he pays up to 40% more for hair care products >> now coming seven or eight weeks some times. >> reporter: increasingly people are spending less. u.s. flight bookings fell 2.3% in may even as airports buckled with traffic car sales dropped 4% in may. and existing home sales have fallen for three straight months though this florida real estate agent says this is a healthy correction, adding higher interest rates have cooled frenzied behavior.

sweating from coast to coast as a heat dome spanning from the midwest to the deep south moves east more than 100 heat records are expected to be broken this week. the sentry club extends from minnesota and nebraska to texas and florida. in houston, a 5 year old boy died after being left inside a vehicle several hours. around the country, communities are looking for ways to stay safe in nashville lisa mccrady leads a program for providing air-conditioning units to the elderly and people in need. >> all of last summer, which was fairly mild, we gave out 48 units. as of right now today, just a little over a month into the program, we've given out 39. >> reporter: and in chicago, a typical source of summer heat relief delayed the city's 49 outdoor pools not opening until july 5th because of a lifeguard shortage. and if you are thinking of getting away for july fourth, experts say be flexible.

>> i'm stuck here trying to figure how to get home. >> reporter: airlines are still recovering from a juneteenth and fathers day weekend that saw some 3,500 flights canceled. >> they simply don't have enough crews to operate all these flights. >> reporter: and the extreme heat may complicate air travel further. if it is too hot, planes might require longer runways or be forced to restrict the amount of weight they carry. >> there are always going to be weather cancellations. there are always going to be cancellations due to air traffic control. that is not the big picture here right now. this is an industry in crisis. >> reporter: holiday weekend was one of the busiest travel days of the year. with fourth of july coming up, and as far as the heat, it is expected to be a continuing problem. the united states average two heatwaves a year in the 1960s. now that number is six it will be a continuing problem

the run for decades. back in june of 1962, inmates frank morris, clarence england and his brother john escaped from the notorious alcatraz federal prison in san francisco bay. the trio serving time for armed bank robberies they dug their way out escaping through a ventilator cover on the roof, shimmying down a smokestack, scaling a fence and launching a makeshift raft made out of raincoats. >> a real mechanical escape from a prison it was hard to do. very difficult thing to do and they actually did it so you have to give them some credit for that. >> alcatraz was once home to some of the country's most dangerous criminals including mobster al capone and the infamous birdman robert stroud at the time the prison was thought to be inescapable. so did the trio survive the

treacherous crossing former u.s. marshal michael dyke worked the case for years. >> was it inescapable? >> obviously not they got off the island. >> reporter: in 1979 the fbi found there was no credible evidence to suggest the men were still alive. in 2016, he caught up with an author who served time at alcatraz >> you were here when they made their escape do you think they made it to the mainland >> i think they do i think they did reason i think so is that i know how patient they were. it would be hard for me to believe they didn't cover the last part of it, the little rowboat that they wouldn't have that figured out too. >> reporter: now these new images seem to indicate an investigation continues. >> the marshal service actually has a really good reputation for looking for people and never stop looking for them. and if you give up, you know, everybody else is going to think

"hiding in plain sight." focuses on mental health and before we talk to them let's take a look at the film. >> it is naturally human nature to be afraid of what we don't understand >> stigma comes from a legitimate fear that if other people know that this illness is present, they will treat you differently. ostracize you. they will not include you. >> i didn't really want to talk about my feelings. because i didn't want people to look at me in a different light. >> you want to, like, hide and just not be around anybody, just be alone. >> if i were to hide this or to be ashamed or to not talk to people about this, that would be festering inside of me and it would eat in my soul if i weren't able to share it with other people >> you leave people to make these assumptions about those

rather than letting that suffer with mental illness rather than letting us actually speak our story and say hey this is how these symptoms actually affect a human. >> good morning. i just said perhaps the most important documentary and i saw you nod a little bit >> you know this is made by long time collaborators eric and chris ewers and produced by julie coffman and written by david blisstein. i'm executive producer and just said please go this is such an important topic and when i saw it at the end, i wept the bravery of people like anna being willing to come out and speak in a time when most of us are stigmatized as the film says not to talk about it it is so important that this not remain hidden. it is afflicting too many of our children, too many of us and we are to talk about it and bring it out into the light. >> anna, what did it take for you to be part of this were you nervous about that?

excited? scared? >> i think it was all of the emotions, honestly like, but i just -- if it could help one person, that is what i thought. it takes like one person like me to talk about it, break all those stigmas. and it could help. it is gonna help people. so it just made me happy to do it happy to be part of the documentary. >> what did you think when you saw it the final product? >> i was -- no words it was amazing like breathtaking yeah. >> you know, there is a lot for parents to learn from this documentary. and sometimes it is hard you know almost want to look away but there is so much revelation from hearing the voices of the children themselves. the young adults themselves. >> the keyword is to listen, savannah we just don't listen we're too preoccupied with our own stuff. and it is loud and legitimate. but we need to listen. and i find as a father of four

daughters that i've periodically, sort of, tried to listen but at the same time i'm putting them much younger than they are. they are so much further along they understand complexity and undertow and contradiction so a good deal comes from not having ability to speak or find the support systems. and unfortunately anna was able to speak out, which reflects the extraordinary bravery of all of the 20 kids in this film they are talking about deeply personal things. they describe a descent into hell and then they find -- i grew up with sort of these three things. this won't last. something will change. get help from others and be kind to yourself. the hardest of all possible things and i think what the story of this film is, what eric and chris have done in this, is that they have taken us into

and all cooked and ready to go and then all you have to do is dredge and fry it. add more fennel. >> just regular flour here. >> regular flour and then we're going to start to dredge. >> you use the whole chicken. >> you can have the butcher break it down into about 8-10 pieces and you can dredge it in the flour and fennel little buttermilk. we just keep adding flavors, you can see. and then we go down to this mixture. which this is just ground corn flakes >> that's it >> oats or something so crunchy. >> that is the secret. and it is really cheap corn flakes that is the secret cheap cheap corn flakes, corn starch and flour and that is it. nice and dredged and drop it right in the fryer you never want to overcrowd the
