we are in for a very busy morning. we want to begin with breaking news out of afghanistan where the taliban says more than 1000 people died in an earthquake near the border with pakistan. the magnitude 5.9 quake struck early wednesday morning local time and destroyed hundreds of homes there. these are some of the first images into our newsroom showing the damage and destruction. many of those destroyed homes are made of mud and the number of dead is expected to climb. the rescue operation is expected to take more time because many impacted villages are in remote locations. we will continue to follow this in the newsroom and bring you updates as we get them. >> we will get to the commute in a bit but we want to talk about the forecast today because we have been tracking some still hot temperatures. not as hot as yesterday though. >> when you add in higher humidity, it won't feel any

cooler. i know a lot of people had a hard time sleeping last night because of how hot it is. look at the storms firing up to ourselves and unfortunately, heading our way. at least a little bit closer. bear packing rain but there is a lot of lightning around the bakersfield area as well as some of that humidity really increasing as the monsoonal moisture arrives. the temperatures today, not much cooler, still 97 in livermore and 84 in oakland. we will be in the upper 70s in san francisco and that is where we get a little bit of a break from the heat so we will talk more about that coming up. any problems for the morning commute? >> good morning, of course we are keeping a close eye on the situation, we are seeing the impacts between pleasant hill and concord in the antioch direction, we will have an update on the situation coming up in a bit but i am noticing some flowing through tracy and

the ultimo, you could potentially have some overnight construction, i haven't seen any accidents in that area and a quick look at the drive time, about 21 minutes. if you take part, prepare for delays this morning. crews working overnight in concord to replace tracks after a bart train derailed. >> they are blaming the heat which caused the curve in the truck. we have the latest. >> employees are inspecting the track following a train derailment during the evening commute. two cars at the end of this train heading to sfo leaving the rails making it confusing for some 50 passengers on board. >> basically, we went up in the air and everyone was freaking out. it was like a roller coaster. >> it happened around 5:30 am between concord and pleasant

hill. we are learning that heat played a major role in this derailment. >> we safely evacuated the 50 riders. there are no major injuries. >> one person complaining of backplane was taken to hospital. some passengers were self evacuating through a hole cut out by contra costa for county fire. >> it sounded louder than usual. i saw this fire just spark out of nowhere. i thought that is a little strange. >> firefighters rushing to put out spot fires caused by this derailment. they were quickly put out. >> it is good news there is no damage to the opposite track. we have county connection helping out with buses to get people in between pleasant hill and concord and a train service between concord and antioch and in pleasant hill and the rest of the system. >> people were hot, frustrated, and one person complaining about bart service when temperatures soared.

>> i don't understand it. >> today in the bay. >> it is a single tracking between pleasant hill and concord. a bus bridge will be there, if passengers need it. >> developing now in the peninsula, are crews working through the night to contain this six alarm fire, but prompted evacuations, caused power outages, and a lot of anxiety. everyone is back in their homes this morning. this happened along 280 and edgewood road, exit near emerald hills. the last time we got a check from the fire department it had burned 20 acres but was only 5% contained. thousands of people are still without power this morning although pg&e is still confirming whether the fire caused those outages.

we have the latest from the fire line. >> the fire broke out just before 2:30 am. there was little went to push it but there was triple digit heat. >> we are battling hot temperatures right now. luckily we don't have wind that is really challenging us, but we do anticipate the heat to hold through the night which will require us to stay out here until we get some containment. >> you can see the flames and the homes that were threatened. dozens of people evacuated. this man got the knock on his door from a firefighter saying leave and leave now. he grabbed what he could and headed out. >> they also got the evacuation order, but he stayed. >> were you told to evacuate at all? >> we were notified. >> are you? >> not yet. >> you are going to wait it out? >> if the wind picks up, maybe i will get out of here. >> pg&e says up to 10,000

customers lost power, including this man's house but he was ready for it. >> we came early and took the solar panels and the battery for the outages. >> we have a backup supply, we got the refrigerators running. it was pretty good. >> all the while, cal fire and crews from all over the peninsula came with everything they had in the air and on the ground. pg and e joining in, bring fire retardant on power poles to stop a bad situation from getting worse. >> here is a latest look at the outage map from pg and e, you can see people in the dark there on the peninsula and in the south bay, most of the power has been restored for neighborhoods in emerald lake hills but in the south bay, you can see the outages continue around the morgan hill area.

>> happening today, the san francisco school board taking on the controversial topic of admissions. for the past two years, students have been admitted by lottery and not by academic performance. some parents are outraged by that and that sparked that recall of several school board members, the superintendent is recommending the current lottery system stay in place for another year and then maybe go back to academic performance. the board is expected to make that decision today. a legal push to halt plans for a massive south of a reservoir. valley water is in the process of developing a 320 foot dam along the creek that would hold about 140,000 acre-feet of water. construction would begin in 2025 but the news is reporting that opponents have filed a new lawsuit claiming that he did district violated state law and how it conducted studies for the impact report issued last

here we go, wednesday morning. let's take a live look outside, you can see traffic moving quite a bit there. a lot of people out early this morning. >> maybe they are trying to get to the office because it is cooler there. >> those folks have no air conditioning may be. it has been so rough without any ac and those temperatures everywhere across the bay area, they were just ridiculous

yesterday and it will still be pretty hot as we go into later this afternoon, we are already at 68 degrees, and dublin right now and we will hold steady therethrough about 7:00 am and then once again, start to see her temperatures heading up, now it will be hot today, just not as hot as yesterday. i don't think this is much better. as you take a look at the seven day forecast, it is coming up at the bottom of the screen. we are looking at all of the microclimates in the high temperatures for this afternoon. hitting 90 in santa rosa, 94 in morgan hill and in livermore, reaching 97 degrees. we are also going to see increased humidity, and we start out tomorrow morning with some muggy conditions and a slight chance of some am storms and then we see those temperatures reaching into the low to mid 90s for the inland east bay, upper 80s for the north bay and san francisco in the low 70s. really only the coastal areas are catching some relief because the valleys are still going to be hot and let's talk

about that monsoon. basically, we are seeing those thunderstorms firing up for southern california moving into the central valley, right around fresno, a lot of those lightning strikes are approaching, these are cloud to ground lightning strikes, a lot of the rain evaporates before we see the lightning hitting the ground and we know that all of our landscape is very dry, what happens is we see the high pressure over the desert southwest, surging that moisture our way but it looks like it starts to dry up by thursday into friday, but in the meantime we have that chance of lightning so the hour by hour outlook even brings in spotty storms, we start to see that in alameda county going into about 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm this afternoon and possibly some rain but more likely once again some of that rain may dry up and there could be thunderstorms, here we are at 5:30 pm, we are seeing it come into san jose and possibly into the east bay but a higher chance later this evening especially for the south county and with that potential of

lightning we will have to be very careful here although we are seeing that lightning potential mostly to our south and east, once again that is something we are watching because that could spark off new fires and that fire danger continues to the end of the week as the hot weather continues, in the lower 90s. are you picking up on any problems for the commute? >> so far, it is actually pretty busy compared to what it normally would be at 4:50 am but no major accidents or issues. a live look at the san mateo bridge, you can see we have a pretty good amount of cars out on the road. let's take a look at some of those drive times down to the south bay, we had some slowing earlier but it looks like right now, highway 85 highway 87, about 11 minutes. i will have another update in a just a bit. >> even more questions now, after the police response to the texas school shooting that left 19 children dead, and two

of the teachers as well. for the first time the head of the department of public safety is providing a detailed timeline, he called police response a failure, his word, many questioning the action of the school district police chief asking why he didn't have officers breech the classroom even when they had rifles and bullets earlier than previously known. this comes as the city council denied the chief's request for a leave of absence from all future council meetings. the mayor voiced his frustration over the investigation and gave an update on the future of that school. my understanding, i have this discussion with the superintendent, that school will be demolished. you can never ask a teacher to go back, ever. >> they have not attended a council meeting since he was elected, leaders say if he continues to miss meetings, he could be removed from the city council. back here in the bay area,

walnut creek leaders considering new action to crack down on smash and grab robberies. the latest push being prompted by a robbery early saturday morning. that is when three men with hammers entered the broadway plaza of macy's, shattering glass there, jewelry cases, still high in watches and no arrests have been made so far. nearby nordstrom's was targeted by dozens of people with ski masks and crowbars, the mayor is calling any crime unacceptable. are downtown and broadway plaza is the lifeblood of the economic engine of walnut creek and we want to be a place that is safe for people to come to shop, to hang out, and to dine. >> the city has closed off some plazas surrounding streets and beefed up police presence. >> changing the way americans are shopping for food, many families are battling the rising cost of groceries. over the past year, we have seen record prices on meat, dairy products, coffee, and

we are getting new details from this week's warriors parade and how it might be a teachable moment for this weekends pride celebration in san francisco. thousands of people lined the streets to celebrate the team, no major incidents were reported but there were

transportation issues. there was a big boom in ridership. more than 90,000 paying riders on bart, that is the highest daily total since the beginning of the pandemic. thousands of people had problems with the clipper card system leading to long delays and lines. >> we actually ended up letting thousands of riders go into the system without getting a card or getting it on their app. we think the actual count was probably even higher than that 190,000. >> driving out of there wasn't easy. they are planning several extended service for the pride parade sunday and will also manage crowds by directing them to various stations, firefighters are making plans to keep everyone safe in the heat, they responded to at least 90 calls during the warriors parade, mostly for sun exposure or dehydration. that is not really a surprise it was so hot. we do have some tips for pet owners on fourth of july, on the peninsula, the humane society and the spca are
