presence there. police say a murder suspect barricaded himself inside at home. can see the address here on the bettendorf drive between highway 101, and monterey road. officers believe that suspect also shot, and killed a man yesterday. then during a chase he fired his gun at officers according to police. neighbors are evacuated in the area, and are being told to stay home. that deadly shooting happened at this location here at your screen. the man who died in san jose's 17th homicide victim this year. we are going to continue to monitor that standoff throughout the morning. if you are not in that area don't go there. if you are in the area follow directions from police. another big story to tell you about this morning. that grass fire on the peninsula's opening. still 12 hours later. that fire started about 2:30

yesterday afternoon. as of last night, and it's 5% contained with 20 acres burned so far. evacuation orders have been lifted for people who live nearby. here is a look at the latest outages right there. you can see people in the dark still this morning on the peninsula, and the south bay. power has been restored to thousands of people in that area around morgan hill. kerry, thankfully it won't be as hot today. but, this still is another reminder that fire danger is out there for us. >> the fire danger will continue. in fact, we are still talking about mid-to-upper 90s. that's not really much yesterday. when you at the humidity it

keeps the body from pulling down, and we have the potential of some thunderstorms. going into the weekend it's dry and hot. let me show you all the activity with these thunderstorms happening across southern california from l.a. to bakersfield. all of these icons are under clouds of lightning. this is a really active system with that moisture headed close to the bay area. we are going to see a chance of some of those storms moving into our area later this evening. >> all right. thanks, kari. service could be slow in parts of the east bay. this is after one of the trains derailed yesterday. >> we do have live coverage tracking the community. bob, bart says is going to keep the factory here.

>> reporter: correct. we know it was hard yesterday. it was over 100 degrees here. so hot that it actually heated up these rails, and caused one of them to partially bend, or warp. which led to the derailment of a train yesterday. that's when over crossing above the tracks by middle school if you are not familiar with the area. they have been working overnight. we can't tell if they are almost finished with the work, but they have been working overnight doing that. bart does not expect this to be done this morning. this is in both directions between the stations, and concorde. on the left of the yellow line once you get past it. there were about 50 people on board were traveling between

bob for that information. as bob was saying the yellow line is going to expect some delays. i've been following the twitter page. the latest information says both platforms and pleasant hill station are open this morning as bob said, and that single track will continue between pleasant hill and concorde. there is a county connection of all the operating roads 11, and 14. again, that's between pleasant hill and concorde b.a.r.t. station. it also says that you can expect up to a 15 minute delay, because of that track maintenance. also, because of that problem there is no direct service to san francisco. so, san francisco passengers and border. said train, and transfer to the airport train. we will keep you updated on this information, and of course the rest of your bay area

commute coming up in a couple of minutes. senate leaders announced a new bipartisan deal on gun reform measures. the bill comes in response to the recent mass shootings in texas, and in buffalo new york. today, chris pollone is out in washington. how does disagreement come together for so long? how does it happen next? >> yeah, good morning. lawmakers have finally released the text of this bill that would be -- it provides a narrow set of gun reform measures. the legislation includes measures to implement flag laws. it deals with whether unmarried partners can have guns if they were found guilty of domestic violence. it also provides for background checks were people between the ages of 18 and 21. if the bill passes it'll keep children and communities safer. >> we know there is no such thing as a perfect piece of

legislation. we are imperfect human beings, but we have to try, and i believe this bill is a step in the right direction. >> reporter: senate majority leader said he wants to pass this bill by saturday. that's before the senate recesses for the july holiday, a two week break. kris. >> thank you very much, chris. we will be watching for that. two valley teenagers accused in a bold east bay carjacking. this minivan was stolen monday night. the young driver was practicing parking the vehicle while his father was curbside. investigators say those suspects pulled up to the car in a separate vehicle. police soon spotted that van chasing the suspects with speeds reaching more than 100 miles per hour. the juvenile suspect was eventually caught in merced county where they say those

temperatures already in the late 70s, and it's going to be a really hot day. notice the increase in cloud coverage as we head towards the 90s. that's when we get the muddy conditions, and possibly a few storms in our forecast. not only storms that draw lightning. as the monsoon season starts to kick up more. that in a few minutes. the heater might have been turned on at the bay bridge. it's starting to slow down a little bit. you are looking at 10 minutes. no issues on any of the bridges. good morning, very happy when they to you. the future is calling for most of yesterday's games to be the today's losses. the dallas could lose as much as 600 points on the open. this happened after a huge rally on wall street on tuesday when the game wasn't 600 points. the nasdaq which has suffered lately is above 11,000.

the united states has a new treasurer. the first native american woman to hold the post. fun trivia, women have held that post nonstop since eisenhower was president. there was also a woman treasury secretary. janet yellin. the first woman to hold that post in u.s. history. so, now that we know who the treasurer is we could print new dollar bills. if you ever noticed there are two signatures on the dollar. so, you've got the treasurer, and the treasury secretary. it'll be the first time ever both signatures on our money are from women. it is not hard to figure out what her signature will look like. she's been head of the san francisco, and now the

87 in napa, and santa rosa reaching 90 degrees. san francisco in the upper 70s, and also some mid-80s. now, we have higher humidity coming in tomorrow. so, even if you look at these high temperatures it is going to feel hotter than that. we also have a chance of spotting storms between tonight, and early tomorrow. the humidity will be dropping on friday. our temperatures don't really drop much either. we are still in the 90s. let me show you all the action happening in southern california right now. all of these icons are like lightning. i just account. there's like 129 lightning strikes happening in the parts of the central valley. with that much lightning activity it could possibly start some wildfires. so, this is a very dangerous situation. all this happening at the remnants of a tropical system that is pushed northward, and it is leading towards the bay area.

the green here on the water vapor shows you where higher humidity, and moisture is in levels of atmosphere. so, that's going to start to move into the bay area this afternoon into the evening. thunderstorm chances go up, but if that range rise up we can still see some lightning, and that's what we had happen in 2020. it doesn't look like it's going to be on that magnitude where we had all those wildfires breaking out, but will we are looking at very little vein popping up at about 4:00 to 5:00 this evening. also, the potential of lightning strikes. especially for the south bay. look at that for the morgan hill area. one lightning strike could be really bad for us. especially, because of how the vegetation is is at record high levels. we start to see that starting to quiet down later tonight. it is still hot with highs in the upper 90s today. 90s with higher humidity, and low 90s throughout the end of the week into the weekend. but, for san francisco is going to feel a lot nicer with highs

the town of paradise was devastated by wildfires. 85 people were killed. in paradise today, there will be the first only wildfire mitigation designation program. it will help homeowners reduce the risk of losing their home. >> this designations includes three areas. the roof, elements in the building and space. fuel management near the home. >> once the home receives the designation, they can go to their insurance companies and apply for a lower rate. and one woman has her hands full with a visitor. it doesn't want to leave.

apple tv and online. street thank you so much for joining us. we want to get you right to that breaking news this morning. san jose police have surrounded a home in san jose. this is near the scene near an elementary school. a murder suspect has barricaded himself inside one of those homes. he has apparently been firing at officers. neighbors have been evacuated. a shooting happened last night on mount shasta drive. the man who was shot later died. police say during the chase that followed the suspect fired at officers. this morning we continue to follow. there is fire activity on the peninsula. there was a brush fire near

emerald hill that left thousands of people without power. and another destroying several outbuildings near morgan hill. >> we have team coverage right now. this is what we are afraid of all around the bay area. >> reporter: good morning. this is what we have been talking about for weeks. high temperatures and the lack of rain can be a recipe for disaster. there is a good number of folks in the peninsula without power. one of the communities impacted by what played out his redwood city. right now because of that fire has not been determined. those living there that fire needed to evacuate. there was a subsequent power outage that affected hillsboro,

san mateo, redwood city, and stanford university. at one point, more than 10,000 customers were without power. this morning pg&e, their map confirms there are hundreds without power. this made for a very tough evening for people trying to beat the heat. one resident told us he has learned from previous outages and is now prepared. >> there is the solar power and a battery for pg&e outages. we have had them the last two years, we have our backup supply and our refrigerator is running. it's pretty good. >> that fire wasn't the only one raising havoc. crews worked to stop a fire and morgan hill near live oak. it did destroy five buildings.

those buildings are agricultural buildings and no one was hurt. they are looking for the cause of that fire. portions of that pg&e map really lit up with the presence of outages. we will give you any information as it does become available as well as the possible cause for those outages. >> it makes it rough when you are trying to cool down and you do not have power and we have these fires going on. we will see our fire danger increasing as hot weather continues today. we may even have some thunderstorms firing up this afternoon and into the evening. we will have more hot temperatures in the forecast even going into the weekend. 90, santa rosa. san francisco, 77. 93, mountain view.

95, san jose. we will follow that threat of thunderstorms. let's take a look at the radar and our hour by hour forecast coming up. if you are taking a trip to the east bay, prepared for some backups. heat played a major role causing a curve in the tracks. this is at the station in pleasant hills that will get passengers to and from concord. that is in addition to single tracking. it is expected to take some time before that track will be fully prepared. what are some of those issues commuters need to be aware of? >> specific to the yellow line from antioch. there is a county

connection offering routes 11 and 14 between pleasant hill and the concord white station. crews have been working through the night because of the partial derailment and because of the hard work, they are running singletrack service in both antioch and the other direction this morning. the rest of the yellow line will have normal service. aside from that issue, i saw another tweet that writers between concord and pleasantville should expect delays from 5 to 15 minutes due to the single tracking. if you take hart during your morning commute, it will be a while before these lines are up and running.

president biden as congress to temporarily suspend the federal gas tax. >> it is $0.18. when you are paying six or seven dollars per gallon it is a small fraction. biden is focused on trying to get gas prices down. >> i have been at this tv station since bill clinton was president. whether it was clint or, presidents cannot really affect gas prices. there are some things that they do like bringing oil from the strategic reserve. in the end, they do not move the needle. california's tax on gas adds the most to the price that you pay. in california it is the republicans that want to

suspend the gas tax. both parties have been for and against it. john mccain would running against senator barack obama proposed a gas tax holiday. someone in washington can pat themselves on the back and say that they did something. just yesterday one of obama's former economic advisers tweeted whatever you thought of the merits of the gas tax holiday, it is a worse idea now. most of the 18.4 cent reduction would be pocketed by industry. to clarify, the oil companies would not get the tax money. if you are used to paying $6.45 and they took the federal tax off that drops it to $6.27. >> i just did the math. i drive a small car and it is a

13 gallon tank. so $2.34. the little guy always loses. happening today, the san francisco school board will take on admission at laurel high school. for the past two years the students have been admitted by a lottery. parents were outrage and that is what the recall of several school board members. the current lottery system stay in place another gear but going back to with mission-based entrance on academic performance. we are taking a life look over san jose. we know that bart is having

some trouble and they are blaming the heat. it is hot enough to bend a rail line, you know it is hot. today, how about upper 90s. it will not help us out in terms of humidity. there is some lightning around bakersfield searching towards fresno and headed toward the bay area. we could see thunderstorms developing especially for the south bay and east bay. it looks like we could start to see showers possibly thunderstorms. if the rain tries up, there could be lightning strikes. this increases our fire danger. i will be monitoring that and we will talk about it coming up. how does it look for the commute? one of the hotspots is in the east bay along southbound

closer look at how your drive times are doing coming up. breaking news out of afghanistan where the taliban says that more than 1000 people died in an earthquake near the border with pakistan. the magnitude 5.9 quake struck early wednesday morning and destroyed hundreds of homes. that is not as strong as what we see here. these are some of the images showing the damage. a lot of those homes are made of mud. the number of dead is expected to climb. many of the impacted villages are at a remote location. we will continue to track this and bring you updates as available. in washington, donald trump was --

we heard from americans that were bullied when they would not go along with the president's plan. >> and worse, his most fervent fans. some sent death threats and in one case broke into a home of a young widow while her children were inside. this is the testimony of bowers and he repeatedly asked his party for evidence, any evidence of fraud in the election. bowers is a very religious man and talked about his faith and patriotism as he explained why he would not go along with the plot. we heard from georgia elections officials that refused to find more votes for trump. we heard evidence after evidence of the plot to overthrow the election. will trump supporters ever be convinced? >> the problem you have is you are in people's hearts.

temperatures in the mid-90s at 10 today in the south bay. 97, livermore. santa rosa, 90 degrees today. we are watching this very slow's , the monsoon season is firing up a lot of storms and thunder and lightning around bakersfield and heading toward fresno. that humidity is searching our way. a lot of the lightning strikes may stay over the central valley but there will be the chance that we could see a little bit of that action today. here we are at 3:00 this afternoon. there could be thunder storms. it could move into the south bay by 5:00 or 6:00 today . there is a concern around morgan hill

because it does show some thunderstorm potential as well as lightning strikes. we know that one lightning strike and sparked a fire and cause a lot of problems here. we see this happening with a tropical system drawn into the desert southwest. we see on the water vapor imagery, where it is green, that is a high amount of mid- level moisture. we see it moving into the bay area late this evening and tomorrow and then late thursday and into friday. it will be hot and humid with a chance of storms. we will have to watch out for that fire potential. not much of a cool down. we are still in the 90s which is well above normal. san francisco will be in the upper 70s, and it does look nicer for the weekend. we are looking at highs in the lower 70s.

how is it looking for people trying to get to work? i am starting to notice some slow spots. the westbound 37 in the north bay on sonoma boulevard. about 26 minutes. your east bay drive times, going from 880 to highway 84, 17 minutes. no delays along the southbound 580 to vargas road which is 12 minutes. and the san mateo bridge is moving along pretty nicely. the metering lights are on. we are noticing some slowing on that stretch. back to you. a new push to make social media more accountable when it comes to online hate. they are pushing a bill to increase online hate. they say
