pico rivera, south of los angeles. >> kari hall is tracking the potential for dry lightning. how dangerous is that? >> it is very dangerous. any time we have a big lightning storm like this, it may be a day or two until we see the result with big fires. it smolders a little bit until it takes off. so we are still waiting for the full impact. a lot of lightning there south of i-5 around los gados. and moisture is moving into the bay area. it will be a muggy morning. it will be a hot day with low to mid-90s. 98 grease for fairfield, san jose reaching 92. 82 for oakland this afternoon and san francisco reaching 75 degrees. so only coming down for a few parts of the bay area. we'll talk about the weekend ahead coming up in a few minutes.

>> all right. well, when kari is not on the air, you know she's still tracking weather conditions online. you can follow her on social media, on twitter. >> developing right now, san francisco police this morning want to talk to the man you see right here on your screen. they are calling him a person of interest in that deadly shooting yesterday on board a muni train. sierra, what are police saying about all of this? >> reporter: good morning, marcus. we have police putting out photos of the person of interest involved in the shooting. as you mentioned, a double shooting that played out in an underground muni train. they are also asking for the public's help in identifying that individual. if you take a look at the screen, we do have some of those photos. these pictures were gathered from that underground muni train. according to a muni spokesperson around 10:00, an agents at the forest hill station heard the shots as the

train was pulling off. when police got to the castro station, they encountered to victims. one was dead and the other one was believed to be a bystander. during the pride parade, police are making sure that this is not a hate time. >> i want to reassure the community that this does not have to do with the pride event. >> reporter: as for the victims, we are still working to learn the name of the 27- year-old man pronounced dead at the scene. the other individual, a 70-year-

old man, was treated with nonlife threatening injuries. anyone with information or knowledge about this information is urged to alert local authorities. >> sierra, thank you. the january 6th committee began its fifth hearing in just a matter of hours. they will foe curse on how former president trump pressured the justice department to declare election fraud. chris pallone join us. this is the lat hearing schedule for this month so we'll be listening. >> that's right, chris. today, the committee will be examining former president trump's threat to out then acting attorney general jeffrey rosen who find somebody more

sympathetic to the election fraud claim. benny thompson of mississippi says that the committee continues to receive additional evidence. they received hours of additional video of former president trump and his family from documentary filmmaker alex holder and the committee is now in talks to hear from jenny thomas, the wife of supreme court justice clarence thomas. again, thompson says that next two hearing after today will be in july. >> we do have special coverage of today's january 6th hearing. it will begin at noon our time and you can watch that live right here on nbc bay area. the jury is ready to hear the case of belwani. the defense team continued its

closing argument. the prosecution already wrapped up its side. nbc bay area has been in the courtroom throughout the case. be sure to follow him on twitter. he is @scott budman. one of the e-cigarette cases in the bay area may be snuffed out. they have been ordered to remove the products. it comes after a two-year investigation. more detail for think morning. there is also a major push for the fda to ban menthol cigarettes. the health agency is taking public comment until july 5th. a new study shows that menthol cigarettes are targeted to black communities and communities of color. we spoke to an expert at the

nation's largest health philanthropy about the number of lives lost every year because of smoking. >> 45,000 african american it is die each year from a tobacco- related disease. that's more than a.i.d.s., homicide, car crashes, murder, all of those things combined, lives are lost. the only thing that surpass that is covid. >> menthol cigarettes are already banned in california and many other states but the fda ban would stop sales everywhere. a followup now if you are counting on riding b.a.r.t.'s antioch lines. you can expect up to 15 minutes. that's because track service will continue to allow crews to repair the damaged track that triggered this week's partial derailment. >> we are now taking a look at dash cam video from that incident. take a look at the screen on the upper left corner. you can see what appears to be

the moment that that train derails, amid of cloud of debris. the train appears to come off the trail there. b.a.r.t. says that extreme heat played a role that day. >> we want to be fully aware of what the conditions are and whether this is something that's a possibility. i do think that's important to point out that derailments are exceedingly rare. this was a rare event. it's been years since we had a derailment. >> b.a.r.t. does treat its tracks on hot days. the tracks temperatures reached 140 degrees. let's take a look at what we can expect throughout the bay area today. still going to be hot days around. >> hot for the inland area. san francisco gets a relief as a result of the fog rolling by. you can see it slowing around the marin head lands.

some of the top towers of the golden gate bridge there, right under the fog. we're going to see temperatures much cooler there compared to what we are seeing over the area. it is 76 76 degrees right now. we are starting out in the upper 60s right now and we'll be in the upper 70s by 10:00, mid-80s by lunchtime. there will still be a wythe range of temperatures around bait area today. we'll talk more about that coming up. vianey, as you head for the commute, you want to stop and get lower gas prices. >> gas is expensive. we'll give you low cases that have gas prices under $6. in sangomas, you can fill up for 5.97 at the excel gas

rising interest rates, slowing in home buying demands. and airlines have been dane selling. some travelers were stranded because of flight delays and staffing it-related cancellations. traffic expert predict more problems to come. they recommended if you can help it, you hold off on your next trip until later this summer which they say could save you some money. >> if you do want to travel this summer, try to travel the last two weeks of august. you'll save about $120 on airfares and up to $100 on a weekend hotel stay. later in the summer, there will be lower prices. but use the price monitoring tool so you can have a live update of what prices look like. >> it's rough here in california because kids go back to school owe early. more tips on beating soaring travel costs on the today show.

she already does. >> awww. >> if you live in the bay area, you are experiencing that heat. >> this will cool down a little bit. the fog has rolled in, and cooled things off. it's going to be nicer there. we have moisture returning, monsoon returning and it has been triggering a few thunderstorms, to our south. we are still tracking a few of those around the south county and over the central valley as well as the sierra foothills. now, the activity starting to wind town a little bit but you can even tell that moisture is still stretching across the bay area and feels really muggy this morning as you head out especially in the east bay where temperatures are in the upper 60s right now. 65 in san jose. we have some upper 50s in oakland and mid-50s in san francisco where that fog is back. for oakland, it is going to be a comfortable start to the day.

it will be clearing out at a really nice day to have lunch outside. we'll still experience some hot weather for the inland valley, reaching 96 degrees in livermore, 95 in concord as well as 95 in los gados and novato today. hot valley temperatures continue while the coastal areas will get some relief and that's where people will be going to escape the heat as the heat continues. everyone is saying, this is so weird, what's going on? the remnants of a tropical system called the monsoon starts to move into parts of the desert southwest and if high pressure is positioned correctly, it draws moisture into california. where we see green, that's high levels of moisture and it was enough to come into the bay area, bring us that humidity and the storms very close by

that some of us were able to witness in the sky late last night. well, now, that's going to start to move out. the rest of the forecast is still hot in the valleys but it will feel better because the air will be drier. we're still with above temperatures in the weekend. with the fog returning to san francisco, it will feel nicer over the weekend. we'll see clouds and the fog early but sunshine in the afternoon. vianey, heading on the roads, have you seen any problems? >> you know, i'm always looking at the traffic report and i'm actually happy that there are 2340 major accidents to report. it is 5:21 so the metering lights should come on soon. if you look at the lights on my map, it is green.

california. >> this is today in the bay, streaming live on roku, amazon, fire, apple tv and online. >> i'm chris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. vianey is in for a look at today's road. first, we'll go to kari hall. i know you have been looking at that video. this is lightning. >> the sky lit up. you probably some video from the area. this is coming up from gilroy. we have lightning across southern california where it did turn deadly for one person, unfortunately. we are still tracking some lightning around the region but it's really starting to taper off here recently. you can see the disturbance and some of lightning south of los banos. this moist it tourist still streaming in the bay area but

we have not seen much activity here. this is all happening because of the monsoon where you get the tropical moisture surging into the southwest, high pressure in the right position. it gets steered in that clockwise direction into california and we get that high amount of moisture that could trigger some thunderstorms. this green shows the high level of vapor in the atmosphere. that starts to move out today with drier air coming in, fog returning to the coast line. it will still be hot but feeling more comfortable. we are headed for 92 degrees in dublin and san jose. the fog keeps the coastal areas comfortable. low 70s in san francisco and half moon bay. i'll track that and keep an eye on what is going on over the weekend. >> how is it rolling, vianey?

>> the trivalley and into the east bay, those seem to be our slower spots right now not because of any accident. the overnight construction does play a role. let's take a look at the speed sensors so you can get a better idea. westbound 580 from grambling roads, update in real time, there you go, just turned green. that does mean it's improving. southbound 680, about 10 mitts and there is some spilling for westbound 84. >> thank you. as soon as today, the us supreme court could release its long-awaited ruling on the future of roe vs.

wade. >> even here in california, reproductive rights could be a problem. >> it is estimate that had without the protection, about half the women in the united states could lose a right to abortion. planned parenthood in california say that they are seeing an influx of women coming out of state after texas limited the rights and access to abortion back in september. we know how the u.s. supreme court is leaning because of the majority of justices are conservative and because of that leaked draft opinion. it was indicated that the court would strike down the law that has stood for 50 years. a san francisco state political science professor says that they are attacks on the women's right to choose coming from

several directions. >> what we have been hearing most about is the states that have triggered bans. in the exempt that roe vs. wade is reversed, our state will make abortion illegal. in addition to the trigger laws passed in 1973, some states have laws still on the books criminalizing abortion and those could become operational again and congress to take action. states like ours which support abortion could lose protection. those who are against it say that that's en unborn person and therefore it is is similar

insatiable appetite to get out. daly city medical center nurses will complete their two- day strike. >> they want changes to staffing and pay and they say that they want problems that go deeper like inadequate amounts of basic supplies to be addressed. a new contract talk is also at a stand still. the hospital says that contract offer on the table offer fair benefits including a 12% wage increase. san francisco's lowell high school may soon return to admissions based on merit. they voted to return to that in

pleasanton. if you can get there early in the day, the middle of the afternoon will be a bit dangerous to be out there for long periods of time. if you're going to tahoe this weekend, we have temperatures there heating up to the mid- 70s, tomorrow, upper 70s on saturday and as warm as 82 degrees on sunday. but if you are going to sonoma valley, it's also going to be hotter. valley temperatures continue to stay in the upper 80s and low 90s. we'll have cool mornings starting out around 50 degrees there. we'll keep an eye on the weekend forecast. vianey has been keeping an eye on the morning commute. how is it looking? >> not too bad, actually, considering we're about to head into that 6:00 pm hour. but of course, the valley still struggling around 205 by the altamonte pass. sononole, about 13 minutes.

this is where i'm noticing the most volume, looking at 24 minutes. southbound 101 from highway 85, about 21 minutes. meanwhile, let's look at the bridges. bridge drive times right now, westbound 80 towards the bay bridge, about ten minutes. no issues on the san mateo or the bridge. the peninsula is seeing a nice commute. about 11 minutes, no issues on highway 92 and no issues through shore line boulevard. other than that, bridges look good. >> a lot of people are talking about it. we are addressing the monkey pox outbreak. >> it is in the community and not being diagnosed. >> cases are growing in california. i go one on one with an expert with what to do to prthe bay ar

department of safety heaped new criticism on pediatric arondodo. 21 people, including 19 children died in last month's rampage. the school district is waiting until the investigation wraps up before making any formal personnel de. happening today, the world health organization is meeting to talk about the monkey pox outbreak. california has the worst outbreak here in the u.s. we spoke with dr. peter chin hong. >> what's been happening that is we have seen more and more cases. many of these cases do not have known contacts. that means that it's in the community and not being diagnosed. if you look at the uk, they are diagnosing maybe five times as

many cases as the u.s. so it minds me of early on in the covid pandemic when we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. we have a pcr test. it's just really trying to be deployed now. it's a little bit tough because it's hard to recognize these lesions and to get access to the tests in a timely fashion. >> i want to talk about that because a lot of people will be going to museum, amusement parks, going to be around people. what can we do to protect ourselves? >> on the big scheme of things, monkey pox is not going to be a great threat to the general population at this moment. monkey pox, you know, only truism is not being intimate with somebody who is ill. if you see a suspicious rash,

try to get it evaluated. if you are being contacted as a contact with somebody with monkey pox, don't panic. there are vaccines, there are medicines that we can use. nobody has really died. this is not in the same scheme as covid. there have not been any fatalities. it is going to be more of a background infection, potentially, unless we can break that chain, identify all the cases on contact and squash it in its tracks right now. >> dr. peter chin-hong, as always, thank you for your expertise and i hope that everyone stays safe with your advice. >> thanks so much, marcus. >> also today, neighborhoods in the peninsula are on high alert because of a sighting of a mountain lion. everyone is reminded to keep an

eye on your small children and pets and make sure that the little guys are inside at dusk. now, to news no one wants to hear. as summer heats up, three bay area beaches are listed among the most polluted anywhere on the west coast. the environmental group released the annual top 10 beach bummer. they include the erkinbrack park, shore park and lincoln park. all have made the list b because all three beaches are enclosed, it can diminish the water circulation there. don't like the sound of that. >> no. >> pack it in, pack it out. >> this might cheer some people up. alexa, imagine if alexa could sounds like me. >> that would be great. >> oh, thank you. >> this is really a new software that amazon is working

lightning late last night. i don't know if you were able to see it lighting the sky. now, we are starting to see some activity winding down, at least for the central valley, south of los banos. we head into the sierra foothills. 19 strikes there within the past hour. it is starting to go past the central valley. as we take a live look outside in fremont, it's cloudy, it's muggy and it's 60 degrees right now. we see temperatures still warming up today. a light wind but we'll start to see the sky clearing out through late morning and into the afternoon as some drier air comes in. unfortunately, for a lot of us, it is not going to be any cooler. 91 in fremont and in mountain view. san mateo reaching 80 degrees and 75 in san francisco.

that's where we get some relief near the coast line as the fog returns. we'll see that return as well. wide range in temperatures from low 70s for the coast to mid- to upper 90s for the inland area throughout the weekend. we have been talking about why this humidity is here and why we seen have a chance of storms. mid-level moisture coming in but it's about to start to dry out. humidity gradually increases today. we're still monitoring for the potential of new starts. when the wind picks up, it may vary a little more and allow for new fires to start. we do want to continue to moan for for that. temperatures head in the lee 90s. not much of a cooldown here, at least not in the valley. san francisco has nice weather for the weekend, morning fog and afternoon sunshine. vianey, any problems starting to pick up on the road? >> you know, just seeing a

little bit more slowing, but, you know, we're getting closer to the 6:00 am hour. let's take a look at the drive time so you have a good idea of what to expect. marina boulevard to broadway, nine minutes. notice no major delays along on 580 or westbound 24 napa through contra costa. there is some slowing from pittsburg to walnut creek. the traffic is definitely start too long pick up and, yes, the metering lights toll plaza. >> thank you. leaders in the north bay taking another step to help those struggling through the

that they are made of and that's the tough part. they are made of things like plastics, bristles and glue. that can be sorted out. that's not accepted out at the recycling centers. they end up in the lands fill which means it takes thousands of years to break apart leaving behind harmful plastics. hey, vianey, time for the hack. >> reading the ingredients list is important. these bamboo brushes are great. they are bio degratable and combustible. if you lose one of these and they end up in the landfill, they'll break apart making it less harmful. >> microplastics pollutions are a problem. they threaten our climate.
