8:37 am
saying it's the world's ugliest dog, but you know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. how did you get involved in entering him into this contest >> it is actually a really strange story. i wanted something different to do for my birthday i'm not from petaluma. i'm from arizona and i was just in town and reserved a chunk of time to mix and edit a radio show i'm piloting called indigenous youth nation. and my niece said we're going to be there and you should enter mr. happy face and i was like no, he's too beautiful. his soul is too beautiful. >> he'll come in last place. >> exactly what i thought. >> where did you get mr. happy face? >> i adopted mr. happy face from a shelter. he came from a hoarding situation where he was very badly abused and neglected and it took a long time for him to feel okay with human touch.
8:38 am
>> how old is he 17, right? >> 17 is what i was told. >> 17 years old. the name itself, mr. happy face, how did you land on that >> i landed on mr. happy face because he -- when i met him at the shelter, he was -- i asked to see the most unadoptable dog. >> okay. >> after my first choice had been already adopted and i already made the drive so he came hobbling out. and he was so happy. like he just -- he looked happy. you don't see it now but a he has this enormous tongue that is almost. >> oh, we see it. >> no, this is not it. >> oh, really? >> this is a sample. >> oh, it's like an iceberg. >> this is a sample. >> iceberg only see the tip, i get it. >> underneath a whole other situation. but he beat eight other pups what do you think about mr. happy face
8:39 am
is it the mohawk, enormous tongue, the head tilt? what was it at the end of the day. >> i think it's that he ha this incredible capacity to show so much love and i think that's really what came through is that the world, it can be ugly enough. >> yeah. >> you know? so if we can just add a little bit of kindness and compassion, we can make this whole world so much more beautiful. >> you have a lot of love too. i love that you went in there and said show me the unadoptable dog and said that's going to be my pet you are amazing. thank you so much. >> congratulations >> what do you win >> so we actually won a trip to be here at the "today" show! >> okay. all right. >> let's go, mr. happy face. look at that smile thank you so much. appreciate it. coming up, we'll celebrate a win whose given us "goosebumps" for 30 years and helps kids develop a love for reading. jenna is going to share the

8:42 am
welcome back just last week jenna launched our reading with jenna junior series by the way, my kids are already reading the books. >> same here. >> let's keep it going >> just so happens one of her picks is celebrating a pretty big anniversary. here to tell us all about it >> creator of "goosebumps," r.l. stine is one of the best selling children's authors of all time he released his first book in the beloved series back in 1992. i was a child reading it, and it's been inspiring a love in reading in millions of kids ever since. >> the two boys with baseball bats held them up waist high and moved forward. >> he cried out as he fell, and the flashlight flew out of his
8:43 am
hand. >> its been 30 years since bob stine, otherwise known as r.l. stine, released the first "goosebumps" book. the beginning of his kid horror series and a reading revolution. "goosebumps" has sold more than 400 million books around the world. inspired a tv series. >> what is your name >> and movies. >> you just released every monster i've ever created. >> and even a pair of sneakers designed by nba superstar kawhi leonard. the books are always about a kid fighting a monster, from zombies to mummies and the hero a lot like stine as a kid. what scared you as a little boy? >> i was always afraid of lot of things, which later came in handy of course, because i could remember that feeling of panic, that feeling of what it feels like to be a frightened kid. and i could bring that to my books. >> take me back to when you were 9 years old. i heard you found a typewriter
8:44 am
in your attic. >> i dragged it into my room, and i would spend hours in my room typing joke magazines, typing science fiction stories, and typing and typing. >> do you feel like you were just destined to tell all these stories? >> i -- i guess i was. >> is there where you feel the most creative? >> yes well, i have no choice i have to be creative. >> stine always knew he wanted to write in college he was editor of a humor magazine he says writing scary books for kids wasn't his original plan. >> here is a secret -- i never wanted to do "goosebumps." and my editors, my wife and her partner, said, no one's ever done a series for 7 to 11-year-olds, scary book we have to try it. and i didn't want to do it that is the kind of businessman i am and finally i said, okay
8:45 am
>> so stine did his homework, following his 10-year-old son matt and his friends to help get inside the minds of kids. >> i spied on him and his friends a lot. matt was like a little guy and he was down on the floor trying on a green rubber frankenstein mask. and he pulled the mask over his head and he couldn't get it off. and i'm watching him i'm watching him and he's tugging, and he's tugging. and i thought what a great -- well, i should have helped him, right? i should have helped him with the mask. >> instead you got to your computer. >> instead, oh, great, and i started taking notes >> how have your books changed over the last 30 years? >> you know, "goosebumps" hasn't changed at all in 30 years the technology has changed you know, kids aren't walking around with walkmen. that's all changed thing about "goosebumps" is, they could have been written when i was a kid because our fears never change it's still afraid of the dark, afraid something's lurking under the bed, afraid of getting lost, afraid after being somewhere
8:46 am
we've never been before. >> more than 300 "goosebumps" books later, r.l. stine has captured the hearts and minds of millions of young readers around the world. >> it just makes me feel like i'm watching this in real life and this actually happened. >> i like how they're kind of scary. >> i like how in it, it keeps changing every page that you flip. >> including me, the "goosebumps" series kept me company while i was at sleep-away camp. you were such a formative part of my childhood and so many kids what does it feel like to have that type of legacy? >> well, i never get tired of hearing about kids who read under the covers with a flashlight i love that story. >> with that kid in you, that 9-year old with the typewriter, what would he think of all this? >> he'd be amazed. no, but he'd be thrilled i just feel like i'm the
8:47 am
luckiest person alive. >> and bob stine, as i like to call him because we're now friends, the loveliest man 30 years of "goose bumps," which i just can't believe i know some of y'all missed the video. it is incredible that r.l. stine has been coming up with new ideas for 30 years he was a comedian, as i said, in the piece. he said there is just one ounce between comedy and fear. so if you scare a baby -- i wish i had the wherewithal to scare one of y'all right now, bu if you scare, your first reaction is, and your second is laughter. >> going back, why would you want to scare a baby >> i'm not saying i'd want to scary a baby hypothetically when you go boo to a baby, their first scared and then laughing. >> you made a point about boys especially and getting them to read and how "goosebumps" was perfect because my son loves reading this >> i'm going send you this series this series i taught to my 6th
8:48 am
grade students sixth grade boys i did a whole scary stories series in october. because it also teaches how to write, to get to the plot. any way, r.l. stine is a genius. >> i call him bob. >> sorry savannah. since you didn't know him -- >> she was making fun of me because i didn't read "goosebumps. >> you were reading flowers in the attic. >> oh my gosh. that was terrifying. >> two new books coming out. one tomorrow and another in september. and i'm honored, as we talked about that included in our first ever read with jenna jr. which my husband has been making fun of the name forever. you can find it at today.com/readwithjenna. i hope you read with us. >> with friends lick jbh, you don't need - >> i know -- >> like you old bat. >> i didn't mean you were old, i

8:51 am
and we're back at 8:50 with today's cant miss summer warm weather usually brings a few more social get togethers and whether you are hosting or a guest, wine is usually at the center of attention at the party. >> yeah, so what is good to drink in the heat? our friend and wine expert vanessa price is here with the ultimate line up good morning. >> good morning. >> we've got all indifferent kinds and none of these is really a budget breaker. so that's great. >> yes, we've got four buckets ten and under, twenty, thirty and fourth and under >> forty is a little expensive. this is the wine spritz. >> yes. >> i thought it was putting a little seltzer in your wine. >> it is
8:52 am
we're going to zhuzh it up apperol spritz wine is another nice alternative. the easiest rule of thumb is three parts wine to one part club soda and you can go two routes you can go bitters, which is what we have here or you can do fresh cut fruit. >> what is the difference? >> one is going to give a bitter aromatic profile and one more fruity depends on your preference >> here we go. we've got to pace ourselves. >> ooh i like it. gives you that - >> not very sweet. >> a white wine? >> white blend from a region in argentina. it's one of the highest vineyard in the world >> less than ten bucks you said? >> it is ten dollars right on the money. the idea is that you want to do something light, fresh, crisp. so this is going to be totally different. >> that is different >> interesting how you go from bitters to fruit it is a totally different profile. more fruity and sweeter or bitter and savory. >> which one do you like best?
8:53 am
>> i like the bitters one. >> me too. i would have gone here because it reminds me of sangria i don't really like bitters. i'm not sure what it is, but i like this one. >> i'm excited about the next. rose, chi love rose ice cubes. >> rose all day. >> in the french riviera it's called vant piscine. by the pool. the idea is on a hot summer day your wine gets hot quick so we're all attempted to put ice cubes in which is totally fine but over time dilutes the wine so instead ahead of time you freeze your wine and as you are drinking -- >> that is okay to do? it will freeze because some -- >> that's actually a great point, carson. thank you. actually what you want to do is make sure that you freeze your cubes at least a day half -- >> you guys here that? she said, that's a great point, carson not a phrase we hear around here often.
8:54 am
>> no. but in a wine segment. this is kind of your wheelhouse though cheers, okay. >> yeah cheers. >> why do these ice cubes look so good? >> they are rose ice cubes. >> it's wine >> oh actual wine. >> the highs and the lows. >> just blew it! almost had it. >> important point here, you have to freeze it at least a day in advance because it takes longer to freeze than water. >> those melt so it's like a never ending glass of wine >> never ending really cold glass of rose. >> on my way back. >> does it have to be rose >> you could do it with any white wine this is the classic presentation you could do it with champagne >> super cool. >> and any old ice cube tray works? >> any tray works. just need a longer period of time than for water. this is something i wanted to point out. we see crew cap a lot. >> i love screw cap. >> me too. but is it declasse or is it okay >> that's the thing, it's long meant it's inexpensive, cheap, not good
8:55 am
but all the way up to high level producers use screw caps to keep wine fresh they want to keep them crisp and fruity which is exactly the profile you want for summer. >> corking doesn't have any effect on the taste of the wine, which is not integral to the taste. >> it is integral to the taste if you are going to age your wine. >> okay. >> but if you are not going to age it you have a fresh pinot grigio here these are both fresh, crisp. you can see a bit more texture and flavor than maybe a less expensive style. >> i like the screw top if you only want to have one glass. >> when have you only ever had one glass? >> okay, two glasses >> may parents would have in the 80s they would have boxes of wine, spigots. and one red and one -- do you think box wine will ever come
8:56 am
back >> i'm a huge advocate of bo wine >> let's do that that would be fun. that's my speed right there. >> these are reds that you are chilling >> yes. >> i thought that was against the law. >> oh, no! no, no, no, no, no this is something i'm such a huge advocate of so excited this is off the beaten path. you have the beaujolais in the first glass and the second is a portuguese red >> this is amazing. >> so good, right? >> chilled too i'm shocked. >> here's what's important about this this you can't do the big redsh >> oh! nasa, you are amazing. we are back after local news. this follows the supreme court overturning roe v. wade,
