set those off peak starting today wire works stands like the one behind me in dublin will go on sale. they will open up and start selling fireworks, along with this it is a pacifica, tracy, san bruno and assistant city. just because your city may sell it safe and saints, does not mean you have free reign to set them off anywhere in the city. check with your city press to see if there are restrictions. you may recall this 120 acre brushfire in pittsburg . confire said this was started with illegal fireworks. several hundred people were evacuated as the fire came close to their home. fortunately, no one was hurt and there was no damage to property. all fireworks are illegal in contra costa county including the safe and sane. confire said even the safe and sane can lead to wildfire. something to think about if you live in an area where they are

if there are any reports of damage so far this morning. i know you have been monitoring this as well. what do you have? >> we have had some small earthquakes in the area. that 4.2 in the same region. look at those red circles. you can see where those different earthquakes have happened. a really active seismic region. it cause those mountains and you have the geothermal area with the geysers. that's what makes that area active and we will monitor. right now on the usgs website, only two people have felt it so far but you can report it to the usgs if you felt in the north bay. let's take a live look at oakland. temperatures in the mid-50s and we will see a cool start to the morning. a lot of sunshine and will be a mild day as we head for the upper 70s. upper 60s in san francisco's.

the airline that flies american eagle for american airlines it's offering its pilots triple pay if they will take flights in july. the pay works out to $150 an hour for a new captain to start. the operator called, envoy, is offering perks like halloween and super bowl sunday as paid holidays. that is a lot of money and you can talk about fourth of july. go right ahead. maybe he could spend all that money on hot dogs. >> those fourth of july plans, a lot of people want to buy many things. everything from meat to beer. wells fargo finds the cost of hosting a gathering for 10 people, which isn't that live, that large in my opinion will cost about 11% more. grilling staples like ground beef and hotdogs are up about 12%. the bonds are about 10% higher and beer could be one of the steepest expenses with prices up nearly 25% over last year. as you know they said make sure you bring something. bring your own bottle.

we are coming up on the fourth of july and we are making plans for the weekend. let's take a look at the fog rolling across san francisco as we get ready to head out. it's clear in double and and it looks like a nice flow of traffic. right now it's 59 degrees. a cold start and these are the hours to let the house cool down and hopefully let it stake cool for the afternoon because it's going to be another warm day. 85 degrees there. 92, concord. napa, 87. we are heading for cooler temperatures in the valleys. semper cisco and coastal areas see the fog and the color air there. 90s in fairfield. mostly upper 80s for the tri- valley down to the south can't county with morgan hill reaching 89 tomorrow. thursday, 83 is the high temperature. cooler than normal in san jose reaching 78. 69 degrees in san mateo. novato reaching 79. that intense high-pressure is moving away.

we will see cooler air coming in and sliding down the coastline with an area of low pressure with its counterclockwise wind flow. that will push-in that cooler ocean air inland and help temperatures stay mild. look at san jose heading into the holiday weekend with warm temperatures today. but then only reaching 70 degrees on july 3rd. fourth of july it's 74. this will bring in higher humidity but also gusty wind. and we will have to be very careful because the vegetation is still dry and with gusty wind it will create an increased fire danger. as we look at temperatures in the 90s, big changes for the weekend and fourth of july, mid- 70s inland while san francisco will see highs in the low to mid 60s. any problems for the commute? >> i was worried about the shot you showed of double and because then i heard about an issue. let's take out look at west

residents near cobb in the last 30 minutes. and it centered near the geysers. so far there are no reports of any damage this morning but that fourpoint two earthquake striking just before 5:00 this morning. kari hall is monitoring what we can expect weather wise and this earthquake. >> it's an active seismic region. 4.2 is individually large for the region but we can see how many earthquakes have happened. small ones and then that 4.2 in the last hour. once again it's that geothermal region come also causing the geysers in the mire,'s mountains. it's typical we see shaking in that area and we've had some people report it to the usgs. we hopefully won't have any more shaking this morning we will monitor that as we head out this morning. temperatures in the mid 60s this morning but you will see it's sunny all day long.

not as warm as temperatures come down from the heat we've seen but still a wide range of temperatures and we will see a nice cool down for all of us in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. developing. investigators looking into of horrifying discovery and san antonio. at least 4 to 6 people were found dead inside a semi truck and a presumed smuggling attempt of migrants. morgan chesky is following the gruesome details from the scene. >> reporter: authorities are calling this one of the first mass casualty events in this area in recent history and we are on the remote road where this tractor-trailer was discovered late yesterday after someone nearby heard cries for help coming from that trailer. when those doors were opened up, they discovered the unthinkable. 46 bodies were inside. men and women who perished due to heat stroke or heat exhaustion in nearly triple digit temperatures come along

with 16 survivors who are now in area hospitals, including 4 pediatric patients authorities have confirmed they have detained three people as potential suspects in this investigation but as of right now they will not say if they are directly tied to this smuggling plot. we can look down this road and see this semi truck has been towed from the scene. we do anticipate another update from authorities but as of right now they have established a wide perimeter around the area as they continue to gather evidence. we know that k-9 units will be out here later today to make sure that anyone who was inside that truck or near it has been accounted for. back to you. access to abortion is still legal in states like ours in california and california voters will soon decide whether it should be a right in the

state constitution. but at the same time, some major companies are limiting access to drugs used to induce early abortions. kris sanchez is live from santa clara. this is where things stand this morning. >> reporter: walmart will start limiting how many plan b or the morning after pills people can buy in an effort to make sure there is access for more people. because of the fallout from the supreme court reversal of roe v. wade protections, we will see the limit on emergency contraception which is usually available for purchase over-the- counter and without a prescription or i.d. that the drug sold as plan b or altera prevent the egg from implanting into the uterus, but only a few days after fertilization so this is a so- called abortion drug. cvs and walmart are limiting to ensure equitable access and consistent supply. walgreens does not yet have a limit in place. california lawmakers agreed to ask voters in november to amend

kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> thank you. governor gavin newsom insists he has no plans to run for president in 2024 but a report from florida has some believing otherwise. according to sf gate last night his campaign team confirmed plans to start running a series of cable tv ads in the sunshine state. those ads are expected to be released in california before they start airing july 4th. the campaign is not indicating what the ads are about come up but the news is naturally fueling new speculation. gavin newsom insist his bochum focus remains exclusively on california. on the possibility of a new round of covid booster shots. the fda advisory committee will meet today to talk about the possibility of rolling out an updated booster for the paul. for that to happen, any potential decision would have to be approved in the next few days. a booster would likely specifically target the omicron

variance come unlike the current booster shot. a debate happening today in the south bay and supporters say it may ultimately save lives. santa clara county supervisors will wait whether or not to stock narcan in schools, bars and restaurants. the drug can instantly reverse effects from an opioid overdose. supervisor cindy chavez wants it to be more widely available. >> we are not encouraging young people to take drugs that we want to make sure they survive that experience. >> right now in santa clara county, first responders carry it, as do some nonprofit groups. if approved, the measure was set aside funding to make it available and add new funding for fentanyl prevention in schools. a brush fire in the north bay turns deadly. this morning we are learning one person died in the roblar fire in sonoma county. it's unclear exactly what happened but the victim was reported in a construction vehicle on private property. the fire broke out around 2:00

yesterday afternoon and burned 63 acres before firefighters had it contained. investigators are looking into the cause. there is still no word about what caused a smoky fire along 101 yesterday afternoon near novato which started in a landfill and briefly closed all lanes of traffic . here is a time-lapse video of when the fire started. the fire burned 113 acres but firefighters made good progress on that without incident. it is under control. crews are still there this morning to keep an eye on any possible hotspots . the warm weather keeping first responders busy. >> it's expected to finally taper off with cooler temperatures coming our way to a welcome respite from the heat we've been having. >> especially for the inland valleys. we do see more fog rolling into san francisco bringing in high

president biden will travel to the nato summit from the g7 today. the russians in the meantime have announced new sanctions against americans including mitch mcconnell, christian gillibrand, and dozens of others come and first lady dr. jill biden and the biden's 41- year-old daughter, ashley biden. our sanctions on russia hurt the russian economy very badly. there sanctions on the first lady mean she's not allowed to travel to russia. coming up at 10:00, nbc bay area will bring the next hearing of the house select committee investigating the attack on the united states capitol. this was not expected. without the committee would take a break until next month but something has changed. an important witness, we think. there is speculation it's one of mark meadows top lieutenants. republican cassidy hutchinson. she has testified in private already. we've seen video of her recalling meadows describing trump office reaction to the

fantastic. 5:50. getting a look at that forecast. anyone trying to get out and take a run this morning, how is it shaping up? >> the morning is the best time. even in the evening, it still too hot in walnut creek. upper 50s to start the morning and we see our trend starting to head up toward noon. 82 degrees at lunchtime today, eventually reaching into the low 90s in fremont, 8184 in mountain view. san francisco back in the upper 60s mother northbay highs will be in the upper 80s. more of the same tomorrow where the valleys are hot, the coast is cool and in between it feels nice with hayward reaching 75. san jose reaching 83. but look what happens on thursday. even inland valleys will start to cool down and we will be lower than what's normal for the end of june and early july

>> this is a deadly crash involving a pedestrian. reports are complicated because it's a hit-and-run crash. so would hit the pedestrian and left the scene. this investigation will have to continue for likely hours, probably about three hours. this is on jackson south of san antonio street and it switches over to the name east capitol expressway. an important roadway for the areas south of alan rock. that will be an issue for jackson avenue. get over to sunset to have a better north-south alternate through the area, or 680. it's not a major area getting off the freeway. the freeway is clear but it does have a built through 101 and that originates in the south county. happening now. the federal agency for national service and volunteerism will announce the covid relief funding. americorps will reveal the amount of grant made possible by president biden's american rescue plan data today.

welcome back. 5:57 and you are watching today in the bay. turning to climate in crisis. let's talk about carbon dioxide. heat trapping greenhouse gas which is increased 50% since the beginning of the industrial era. carbon dioxide is released through human activities such as deforestation and burning fossil fuels like coal. but it also happens naturally from volcanic eruptions and respiration, and increase in carbon dioxide has added an extra layer to the atmosphere causing more warming. and we do have now new

technology helping to capture that carbon dioxide from companies that are trying to reduce their environmental impact spoke with the executive chairman of delta clean tech who says california is leading the pack when it comes to creating clean energy and reducing carbon emissions. >> the transition i see is a transition and it's already occurring at a rapid rate. it's transitioning from coal, which is an 11% to 30% co2 exhaust stream. 11% to 13% exhaust going up as carbon dioxide, which is driving global warming down to 3% to 4% exhaust stream. when we use carbon dioxide exhaust stream, when we use natural gas to. we are transitioning to natural gas which is great progress. now let's transition eventually from natural gas into renewables and this will be a bridging technology which will help us do that. >> there's a lot to explain.
