500 acres have burned. 500 strikers are also threatened. contra costa county fire protection tells us some firefighters are on standby in the event conditions change. >> we've had multiple 100 plus acre fires in the last few weeks in contra costa county one we have not received a request for support at this time. >> the fire is believed to have started when a structure caught fire. the flames quickly spread and got out of control even though firefighters first arrived in about 10 minutes of the call. weather plays a factor in this. how are we looking? >> it's going to start to cool off but what we saw yesterday is a time lapse of the rices fire and the intense heat causes it to rise up and basically moves those embers downwind and can spread to mark spot fires. you can see how rough the terrain is and also a lot of vegetation under these trees. it's very dry and adding fuel to the fire as it develops and

moves quickly. unfortunately with the gusty wind we are expecting the next couple of days, that could carry it downwind. temperatures will start in the 60s but then head to the upper 80s so it will be very warm this afternoon and some of this gusts at 15 to 20 miles per hour . we will continue to monitor those conditions. has it looking for the morning commute? >> we are tracking this recovery for the upper east shore freeway. west 80 had a crash until 10 minutes ago. took less than 10 minutes to get back to full speed heading west on 80 off the carquinez bridge hercules is clear but still maintaining a smooth drive at speed all the way down to richmond and the berkeley curve. no problems out of antioch for the early drive on highway 4. we are looking at niles canyon just reopening on highway 84.

i am tracking a closure on a surface street in menlo park. we will get that coming up. bay area reproductive rights advocates are trying to move in front of what will be a flood of uncertainty now that roe v. wade is history. >> california will likely become a sanctuary for those seeking abortions from state that no longer allow it. we are live in san francisco and this is one of unresolved issues floating around right now. >> reporter: that's right. one of those issues is telemedicine abortion and doctors tell us interest has skyrocketed since friday's ruling and that is expected to continue as both sides navigate the fallout from friday's decision. telemedicine abortion is basically the right or the ability to get a drug combo to

take it home to terminate a pregnancy. medication abortions currently account for more than half of all abortions in the country. before the pandemic, patients had to receive those pills in person but because of covid the fda announced pills to be mailed to patients. the fda made that will permanent in december. at least 19 states restricted the use of telemedicine for pregnancy terminations and many same states have enacted partial or total bans on abortion. >> th exploded on ready with the supreme court decision overturning roe. we went from 3500 visits in each day previous to that decision to 209,000 on the day of the decision so a sharp increase. we are providing information we know people want. they want to know, how can i get my hands on these pills

look how thick the smoke is. at this point at least one home has been destroyed by the fire. more than 500 acres have burned so far and at least 500 structures are still threatened. the fire is believed to have started with a structure wonnacott on fire the flames quickly spread and got out of control even though the first firefighters arrived within 10 minutes of the call.>>ery conce it's been so hot and dry but we are getting a cool down now. >> we are getting a cool down but let's talk about the conditions around the fire. this is a look at the time lapse yesterday afternoon and we can see because of the hot weather and rising air, that carries the ashen embers downwind. you can see the trees really waving with the gusty wind in the time lapse. and we see that dry vegetation. as we go into today, it looks like we will have calmed the wind and cooler temperatures to start, but that will lead to another warm day as the wind

increases and we could possibly see costs close to 20 miles per hour. we will watch that today. in the bay area we will see a cool down with highs reaching into the 70s and low 80s. this is a big change in the hot weather we've seen in inland valleys recently. you have more on this and a look at the holiday forecast coming up in a few minutes. 5:32 and overnight an accident has closed part of el camino real and menlo park between linwood and encino avenue. police say send latino transit county bus struck a pedestrian. we did not have an update on their condition. please expect the closure to last until it based 6:00 a.m. or longer. a san francisco man is in custody accusing a deadly stabbing during crime spree which started in the bay area.

authorities arrested isaiah harley shortly after he stabbing the coat a truck driver at a fresno county truck stop on saturday morning. deputies called it a random attack. they say it was the last in a string of crimes starting with the carjacking friday in oakland and later a robbery at a store in lost hills and a separate carjacking in bakersfield. today it's an important day for families in oakland. parents will learn if more school closures are coming to the district bowing to follow through on its plans despite pressure from parents and teachers. kris sanchez joining us now and what is expected to happen here? >> reporter: we know parents are really hoping they oakland unified school board will change its position on some of the school closures and parents have gone so far as to create a resolution of their own they want the board to vote on. back in february you might remember the ousd school board voted to close parker k-8 and cumin 80 day school this year

but next year they voted to close brookfield, monk, grass valley, horace mann elementary schools and komatsu discovery academy. two more schools would only serve students up to fifth grade instead of eighth grade and rise cumin 80 schools would merge with new highlands academy. and protest some parents and activists moved into the parker school campus and started running and unsanctioned summer camp with activities and meals for children in that community. in a statement oakland unified demanded the group move out because they were not meeting district standards for safety and supervision and background checks. despite the pressure on the school board since february the majority of the school board has maintained their position on those closures and other votes since then. they oakland school board will also have to talk about and finalize the budget. it's a $700 million budget but they are working with $40

million in cuts. it's understandable why they may need to address some school closures and it's understandable for the community may not want them. we will continue to cover this. back to you experiment a cost so much money when enrollment is down but the importance of those schools to those kids, it's a tough one. thank you. moving you forward 2 1/2 years into the pandemic and vaccine for children as young as six months are available but there is hesitancy among parents as they ponder that decision if they will take the next step with their kids. i spoke with dr. szilogyi about the key benefits for kids. >> i tell them that the vaccines are safe and effective and the best way to protect their children from severe disease and hospitalization -- and i direct them to reliable outlets for information and

and the side effects are really the same after the coronavirus vaccine. a child may have no symptoms at all or may have a little bit of irritability or fussiness, redness and swelling at the injection site, or even a low- grade fever for a day or two. and some children may even have a high fever for a day or two. but those symptoms are self- limited. they are expected and are not atypical of what we expect from any immunization. >> is it safe for children get the covid vaccine at the same time as other vaccines or a flu shot? >> yes. and older children have been receiving vaccines along with their covid vaccine, or at least some of the time. they, of course, don't get as many vaccines as the younger children do. but, yes, they have been given this way and they are safe experiment you

heading into the weekend. we will talk more about that in a few minutes . mike, how's it looking up at the commute? >> starting to see some slower spots. some are predictable and some are surprises. in the south be, predictable slowing on 101 but this will be a surprise for folks unless you caught the report at the start of this show. southbound el camino real is closed . there is a crash. use middlefield to get by through the area. that is an easy reroute because middlefield is also a major route. we may have that clearing bank 6:00. meanwhile northbound 238, a disabled vehicle at the junction with 88 zero causing both freeways to slow down. that's just been cleared but chp still has it so i will track that portion of slowing out of castro valley or into oakland. later today, at midday, the giants will play at oracle park at 12:45. it will affect traffic around lunch or a little before the lunch hour.

lower drive from north to 38 and the nib it's coming out of hayward. we'll talk about what may be going on there coming up. 5:43. and in san antonio, texas i'm trying to get to the bottom of that human tragedy were dozens of migrants died in an apparent human smuggling plot. >> 11 more people survive. morgan chesky picks up the story from outside the hospital where some people are now fighting for their lives. >> reporter: good morning. it's a tough day for the people recovering inside the san antonio hospital. some of them are being treated for heat -related illnesses. others remain in critical condition today. federal investigators have taken over the case, which is, essentially, called one of the worst human smuggling operations in united states history. 51 people are dead, 11 are still recovering and san antonio-area hospitals. the trailer where all of these

people were packed inside has been taken by federal investigators and scoured for evidence in hopes of learning more about where it came from, how long it was there, et cetera. we do know that three individuals have been detained with potential ties to this alleged smuggling plot. two are mexican nationals that according to documents were located when they took the license plate from this semitruck and traced it to a san antonio-area home him and found two men come about to overstay their visas and both in possession of multiple illegal firearms according to a mexican consulate official, the third individual is an american citizen who is in a san antonio- area hospital. authorities are remaining relatively tightlipped about this ongoing investigation that as it stands right now, 51 people are dead and 11 are still fighting to stay alive. back to you. the mix such a tragic story. today, r&b singer and now

it's hard to work out at that time so we will have more comfortable weather today. look at fremont starting out with a clear sky and temperatures in the mid-50s. through today we had for the mid 60s at 10:00 and upper 60s at lunch time. maybe get in a quick walk at lunch temperatures will head up to 78 in san jose. 88 in fairfield. those temperatures are cooler than recently as we are looking at a high of 84 in santa rosa. tomorrow our highs will reach into the low 80s in the north bay but mostly upper 70s and we see mid-70s in the tri-valley. 81, livermore. san jose, 77. and we continue that cooling trend into friday with gusty wind picking up and we only see 60s and 70s for most of us. the intense heat and high pressure is moving away. we will see cooler air coming in as a storm system and an area of low pressure brings in a

stronger ocean breeze and rain to the pacific northwest will move closer to the bay area and we will see temperatures in morgan hill going from the upper 80s into low 80s tomorrow and friday and the weekend we only see highs in the upper 70s. we will see a break from the heat for a while but look at the end of next weekend into the weekend. it's going to be much hotter. enjoy this holiday weekend. make time to get outside. some of our warmest temperatures reach into the mid- 70s with breezy wind in san francisco will be chilly as that dog lingers and we see peeks of sunshine. we are looking at highs in the mid 60s through the weekend into early next week. anything going on for the commute? >> you talk about peaks of this 'n that pick let's look at the bay bridge. there are some low clouds driving across. we do have a report of something going on on west 80 into san francisco at

fremont. let's look at the map. circled that area into san francisco. no slowing there. the metering lights should be turned on any second at the bay bridge because there slowing at the incline and general slowing on 37 and 4. i am concerned about potential slowing into san francisco for activity near the fremont pick this activity has been a problem. there were two separate incidents. northbound 238 and incident off the castro valley y and the traffic break and that's where the sensors have stopped registering. north 880, a separate incident on north 880 approaching washington toward 238. both issues out of castro valley and hayward heading toward oakland that is continued slowing for that one section of the east bay. the rest of the east bay operates at lighter than we often see because it is a summer pattern. san jose in the south bay slowing on north 101 california attorney general ron bonta said hate crimes in
