the rices fire is burning and nevada county north of grass valley near the yuba river . at this point we know at least one home has been destroyed. within 500 acres have burned and at least 500 structures are said to be threatened. contra costa county fire protection tells us some of its firefighters are on standby in the event conditions change. >> we've had multiple hundred plus acre fires last few weeks in contra costa county one we have not received a request for support at this time. >> the fire is believed to have fire. the flames spread so quickly and got out of control even though the first firefighters arrived within 10 minutes of that call. >> meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those conditions. we know wind and extreme heat can affect the firefight. >> it will still be windy today but temperatures are coming down.

what we saw yesterday was that intense heat. that causes the air to rise rapidly and it carries the ash and embers downwind to create more spot fires. you can see the vegetation is very thick and the terrain is very rough so it makes it hard for firefighters to get there, and there is a lot of debris and vegetation that has dried out underneath those trees which adds to the fuel. we are starting with low 60s there but it will be heating up again today i'm heading for the upper 80s with gusty wind. we will continue to monitor weather conditions around the rices fire. how is it looking for the commute? >> one spot with extra flowing, north 238 and north 880. both are jammed up heading into and through san or two pick looks like they are in recovery mode. a slower drive out of castro valley and hayward heading toward oakland. the bay bridge toll plaza has the metering lights on.

i see the backup forming on the live camera and we will show that to you coming up. the south bay is recovering from the first burst of slowing we usually see. bay area reproductive rights advocates are trying to move in front of what they expect to be a flood of uncertainty now that roe v. wade's history. >> california will likely become a sanctuary for those seeking abortion from states that no longer allow it. ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. that is one of the many unresolved issues floating around right now. >> reporter: that's right. there is still a lot of uncertainty and questions surrounding this. one of those areas is in telemedicine abortion. experts tell us interest has skyrocketed in the days following friday's decision and it's expected to stay that way as both sides navigate the fallout from the decision. telemedicine abortion is

basically the ability to get a drug combination mailed to patients to take it home in order to terminate a pregnancy. medication abortions currth hal all abortions in the country before the pandemic, patients had to receive those pills in person but because of covid the fda announced it would allow termination inducing pills to be mailed to patients and the fda made the role permanent in december. at least 19 states restricted the use of telemedicine for pregnancy terminations that many of those same states have enacted partial or total bans on abortion. >> the traffic to our site exploded on friday with the supreme court decision overturning roe. we went from 3500 visits in the day previous to that decision to 209,000 on the day of the decision. just a sharp increase. we are providing information we know people want. they want to know

from there before we came to any burned areas. the fire is some distance from their. behind me here, this is the most active fire we can see this morning. there is smoke on the other side of the ridge line. we are about as far as he improved dirt roads can take us. there are firefighters out in there and we can hear the chainsaws where they are building containment lines. from what i saw last night what i am seeing this morning, it does not look like there has been a significant amount of growth overnight. it will run into the areas already locked in and hopefully doesn't push further down into the canyon. back to you. let's turn to our meteorologist with how conditions are looking this

morning. >> we can see through this time- lapse the fire with the heavy vegetation and steep terrain. it was also rising into the atmosphere. we could have more spot fires which is what we will watch out for today. right now the winds have calmed down. the humidity will drop throughout the day as temperatures reach the upper 80s in that area just to the east of sacramento. we will monitor those weather conditions around that fire. police investigating an accident involving a bus and a pedestrian in menlo park. we just got new update that says the victims suffered life- threatening injuries.

that stretch of road is expected to reopen in about 30 minutes. today is an important day for a lot of families in oakland. parents will learn if more school closures will happen. today chris sanchez is joining us. what is the plan here? >> this is the last school board meeting for oakland unified for this school year. parents hope they will take a step back and reverse those school closures that were voted on back in february. the district back in february voted to close a number of schools. parker k through eight, brookfield, monk, grass valley, horse maine elementary and discovery academy would close. it will only serve students from fifth grade to eight and they would merge with new highland community. some parents and activists

started running and unsanctioned summer camp with activities and food for the kids there in the community. oakland unified demand that the group move out because it was not meeting district standards for safety and background checks . despite pressure on the school board, the majority has maintained their position on closures in other votes since february. this has to do with the budget. there is $700 million budget and they have to do $40 million in cuts. we understand by the school district might have to cut back on costs and we understand why parents are upset. >> you realize how much they have to make that money. when you spread it out, it is then. >> a lot of those expenses are fixed. you cannot cut back the costs.

>> chris sanchez, thank you. moving you forward, 2.5 years into the pandemic. kids as young as six months old can now get the vaccine. there is hesitancy among parents as they decide to take that step with their family. >> i do tell them first of all that the vaccines are safe and effective and the best way to protect their children from severe disease and hospitalization. i also direct them to reliable outlets for information. there are a variety. there is healthy children.org at the american academy of pediatrics. and i also direct the parents of younger children to a sesame

is a little bit slower. a backup at the richmond bridge. we will show you the backup at the bay bridge and check in at the san mateo bridge coming up. developing in san antonio, texas, they are trying to get to the bottom of that human tragedy. dozens have died. >> we pick up the story there from outside that hospital where some of those people are fighting for their lives. >> reporter: good morning. it is a tough day for the men, women, and children recovering inside this hospital. some of them are being treated for heat related conditions. federal investigators have taken over this case which is essentially being called one of the worst human smuggling operations in united states history. 51 people dead and 11 people

for covering in hospital's. that trailer for people were packed inside has been scoured for evidence in hopes of learning more about where it came from and how long it was there et cetera. we do know, however, that three individuals have been detained with potential ties to this smuggling plot. two are mexican nationals who were located when they took the license plate and traced it to a san antonio home. they were in possession of multiple illegal firearms. according to an american consulate official, the third person is an american citizen who was in the hospital. investigators are remaining tightlipped but as it stands now, 51 people dead and 11 are fighting to stay alive. >> such a horrific story.

vice president kamala harris will make a stop in the bay area. details on that trip have not been released. she last visited her home in april. we will have coverage of her visit. new developments in a relationship with your rep. u.s. army units will be permanently based in poland. >> we can think vladimir putin of all people for pretty much all of this. finland and sweden have gotten the go-ahead from turkey to join nato. turkey had been standing in the way until now. vladimir putin has a huge border touching nato territory with our forces much closer. poland is a long time nato alley and the army will be permanently stationed there.

up until now we kept our forces mostly in germany. all of this is coming because of russia's invasion of ukraine. president biden is in spain at the nato summit. 20,000 troops have been added to european forces bringing the total to 100,000 and the whole world is talking about who told the house select committee that the white house was well aware of the potential for violence days before january 6. and the president trump was very much aware that many in the crowd were armed when he urged them to march on the capital and that the top white house lawyer was warning them that they were likely committing crimes. >> he said something to the effect of, please make sure we do not go out to the capital, cassidy. we will get charge with every
