>> on the 15th anniversary of the iphone we'll give it a little face time. today wednesday, june 29, 2022. ♪♪ nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. hi everybody, good morning. welcome to "today." good to have you with us on a wednesday morning. hoda's got the week off. >> all eye on the january 6 hearing yesterday. that is our top story this morning. that explosive testimony on capitol hill from cassidy hutchison, the former aid to trump white house chief of staff mark meadows. >> her words reverberating across the country. she said under oath president donald trump raged after his january 6 speech aggressively trying to force his way to join reuters at the u.s. capitol and allegedly taking aim at his own lead secret service agent bobby engel inside the presidential suv. >> the president hadn't got into

the vehicle with bobby. he thought they were going to the capitol and when bobby relayed to him we're not we don't have the assets to do it, we're not secure we're going back to the west wing, the president had very strong, very angry response to that. umm, tony described him as being irate. the president said something to the effect of, i'm the effing president, take me up to the capitol now. to which bobby responded, sir, we have to go back to the west wing. the president reached up towards the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel. mr. engel grabbed his arm said sir, you need to take your hand off the steering wheel, we're going back to the west wing. we're not going to the capitol. mr. trump then used his free

hand to lunge towards bobby engel and when he recounted the story to to me he motioned towards his clavicles. >> it was one of just many bomb shells revealed in the hearings yesterday. among others, hutchison claiming that the president insisted check points at his rally that day be removed so armed supporters could attend. and he said according to the testimony, they are not here to hurt me. when told the rioters reached the capitol, meadows said trump want to do anything that and we have it a covered starting with peter alexander in washington. good morning. >> reporter: there is new fallout of that dramatic testimony from cassidy hutchison. the first white house official to testify publicly. perhaps her biggest revelation that former president trump wanted to go to the capitol on

january 6 pressuring his own secret service detail to let him join that crowd of his supporters, some of whom he knew were armed. in person and under oath cassidy hutchison a trusted aid of former president trump chief of staff mark meadows testified tuesday that before his speech on january 6, mr. trump knew about the potential for violence at the capitol but was unfazed. even after learning some of his supporters were armed and would not get through security. >> heard the president say something to the effect of -- that they had weapons. they are not here to hurt me. >> reporter: but another explosive moment now disputed by some close to the secret service after those allegations from hutchison that mr. trump, furious he was not being driven to the capitol, tried to grab the steering wheel and lunge toward his lead agent. bobby engel. a source close to the secret service tells nbc news both are prepared to testify under oath disputing the remarks. hutchison's lawyer testifies she testified under oath

acknowledging what she was told and that others with knowledge of the episode should do the same. -- rudy giuliani days before january 6. plans she says alarmed white house council path cipollone. >> something to the effect of please make sure we don't go up to the capitol, cassidy. keep in touch with me. we're going to get charged with every crime imagine football we make that movement happen. >> reporter: also recounting a conversation between pat cipollone and meadows, as the rioters advanced on the capitol. some chanting hack mike pence. cipollone saying the president needed to take action. >> responded something to the effect of you heard him pat -- he doesn't think they are doing anything wrong -- >> reporter: -- that there was no widespread voter fraud. >> i first noticed there was ketchup dripping down the wall and a shattered porcelain plate on the floor.

>> reporter: mr. trump unload a.d. series of attacks directed at hutchison on his social media site saying he barely new hutchison denying her account of that altercation with the secret service and about his january 6 rally saying, quote, i didn't want or request that we make room for people with guns to watch my speech. who would ever want that? and what may have been one of the most significant moments from a legal standpoint, the committee's top republican liz cheney closed the hearing with accusations of witness tampering which she called a serious concern. efforts cheney said from those close to the former president donald trump were to question witnesses to give false testimony through intimidation campaign -- basically saying that mr. trump knows you are loyal and you are going to do the right thing in your

deposition, savannah. >> peter. you talked about the secret service agents who apparently are willing to testify under oath. we'll see if the committee takes them up on that offer. there are also calls for the white house council pat cipollone to come and testify as this young lady cassidy hutchison did. where does that stand? >> the committee wants to hear from sip ploen. just this morning we heard from liz cheney. regarding mr. trump's activities on the 6th of january. there is still no indication that is going to happen. cipollone has been cooperating and overnight the committee chairman benny thompson t top democrat said they are going keep pursuing cipollone even for a off camera interview. but they do want to hear from anyone with new information.

>> lot of folks listening to the testimony yesterday and wondering whether this could lead to criminal charges. i should mention. hutchison's testimony, while compelling would likely not be admissible in a court of law. it is hearsay. how does that play into whether or not this ultimately does lead to any criminal charge against anybody? >> savannah, you know this best. legal experts agree some of her testimony would be admissible. some would not be in court witnesses are generally allowed to testify to what they saw or what they heard first hand not things that you hear from other people. prosecutors obviously they rely on lots of witnesses to build to corroborate a case. hutchison is just one witness. no case would rise or fall on her testimony alone. but the bottom line is the it still rein maintenance an open question whether the justice department is going to bring any indictments against the former president or any of those in his inner circle. >> peter, thank you. also this morning we are learning more about that devastating tragedy involving migrants in texas.

51 people have now died after being packed inside a sweltering truck believed to be the deadliest case of human smuggling in u.s. history. nbc's morgan chesky joining us from texas. he's in san antonio at the hospital br some of the survivors are still being treated. morgan, good morning to you. >> craig, it really is a tough situation for the men, women and children who are fighting to stay alive inside this hospital. some are being treated for heat related illnesses but others remain in critical condition. we're also learning that three individuals have been taken into custody base of this alleged huge smuggling plot is one of them is believed to be an american. >> reporter: this morning in san antonio, a horrific tragedy is taking a growing human toll.

>> it's sad. these are human beings. >> reporter: officials flow say at least 39 men and 12 women dead after they were found packed in the back of this abandoned semi truck monday. in sweltering triple digit texas heat. authorities adding some of the victims may be children. >> potentially some of them are under the age of 18. >> reporter: first responders describing the shock of seeing so many people packed inside the trailer. >> we have 50 or 60 people that were inhumanely stuffed in the back of a truck with no water, no air-conditioning, no means for ventilation. >> reporter: mexican authorities say 22 of the victims are mexican nationals. seven migrants are from guatemala. and two others from honduras. the incident being called the worst human smuggling event ever in the united states. so far three people believed to be part of the spark plugging operation have been taken into custody. a mexican government official saying one of them is a u.s. citizen who is currently in a

san antonio hospital. on tuesday authorities used canine units to search for more potential victims. the tragedy amid a record influx of migrants across the u.s. mexico border. where does accountability lie? >> the policy makers who have responsibility over the immigration system. that is at the federal level. >> reporter: horrifying and heartbreaking. exploiting individuals for profit is shameful and political grandstanding around tragedy. overnight texas governor greg abbot responding. >> he said he's doing everything possible to stop human smuggling. that's a lie. >> reporter: in san antonio, the

community trying to support the victims families and survivors. >> when you see people who give up everything in their lives who come to america for a better life, why -- >> reporter: and this morning texas officials say they are working where four different consulates to try to identify the victims. in the meantime 11 survivors remain, trying to recover in san antonio area hospitals. craig? >> such a tragedy. morgan chesky in san antonio. thank you. now to the ripple effect of the supreme court's decision overturning roe v. wade.tuturni. abortion is now illegal in seven states with more states working to enact their own bans and the biden administration is weighing its options. nbc's stephanie gosk, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. another day, another string of abortion rulings in state courts and the rules keep changes at least half a dozen states are set to enact new restrictions within the next few weeks. with all of the uncertainty. some women are turning to a solution they can get in the mail the abortion pill. pregnant women looking to get an abortion are navigating a shifting landscape the changes day to day,

and it does not look like things are getting any better any time soon >> not getting better. one airline exec says what we had yesterday were blue sky cancellations. in other words the weather wasn't a problem yesterday but look at the numbers. we have 642 flight cancellations yesterday on a blue sky today. so far today we have more than 400, and climbing. and you see the delays as well also mounting today. the bottom line here is as we've said, this has been a problem for weeks. back on memorial day, that weekend, 2800 flight cancellations. the problem continues and all sides are pointing fingers at each other with just days to go until the big july 4th weekend, americans and airports are once again bracing for impact >> just been the worst experience ever.

>> reporter: so far this week nearly 3,000 flights canceled. on tuesday, american canceled the most flights earlier in the week it was delta. blaming weather and staffing issues sending this e-mail to passengers scheduled to fly over the coming weekend warning of operational challenges and offering the chance to rebook your flight with no fare difference or change fee >> well, often we're hearing lack of a pilate ready to go cited as an issue or problem connected to a delay or cancellation that is part of what was supposed to be avoid by offering all of this taxpayer money to airlin. >> reporter: they also accuse the faa of not having enough air traffic controllers. especially in florida where passenger volume exploded.

up more than 100% over pre pandemic levels at virtually every airport in the sunshine state. the faa is surging more controllers into florida now before the pandemic the airline cancellation rate averaged just under 2% this year it is 3 1/2% as airlines admit they are overscheduled. >> everyone is having problems dealing with accommodations of not enough staff, not enough equipment and all sort of weather problems and its been really rough. >> reporter: now delta and united are cutting more flights starting friday. 50 daily flights out of united's newark hub

and delta is slashing 100 daily flights through august 7th for many regional airports the situation is even worse. some even losing all of their service like williamsport regional airport in pennsylvania. >> with early retirements and people just retiring, its become kind of a perfect storm. there is lot of airports that -- >> reporter: and little support for raising the mandatory pilot retirement age while airlines are hiring and training more pilots, it will take years to fill the ranks >> tom help us understand something pathaerps seems like an often solution to folks. why is there so little support to raise that mandatory retirement age for pilots? >> reporter: let's be clear. both the unions and airlines opposed and also opposition in congress congress would have to raise the

age. there are multiple reasons here. first of all, united says about a third of its older pilots are out on medical the old you are you get the more and more people have medical issues and also international rules even if the united states were to change or raise its retirement age, these pilots would not be able to fly into canada, into europe, for example, under international rules. they would have to then downsize from the bigger planes down to local domestic flights that means retraining again on new planes for those pilots. sour creating more of a backlog, more of a choke point. this is a problem with no immediate quick fix. >> complicated problems it would seem tom costello at reagan international. thank you. >> good perspective though one of those things we're not experts and why don't they just raise the rates? if it were so easy i think they'd have already done it. >> tom gave us six reasons right there.

>> what's the next one >> i would say what do you want to do with your lives? like where are you at? and where do you want to go and how does your day to day reflect that future that you want for yourself >> yeah, i was reading something in your book that really hit me. it said, if you wrote down or recorded everything that you say to yourself out loud, would you be proud of that inner dialogue? >> yeah. you know so many of our inner dialogues are handed down from well intentioned people, whether it is political or our parents or society and i think a lot of times we don't rewrite the narratives in a way that expresses who we are and what our truth is. >> you know it would be interesting as an exercise to write it down. and lot of times it is that background noise we don't even realize how we may be berating ourselves or talking down, you know, our hopes and dreams all that we could never do that. it is too late for this or that. >> yeah. the world is so noisy these days that we've started to tune out our own inner intuition. how do we come back home to ourselves and also how do i we get brutally honest if your lives aren't full of joy how do we guide people through that journey.

a nice fluted edge always make your pastry cold cold butter, flour, cold water roll it out. keep it chilled. fill it with the filling, sugar, flour, little bit of butter and this is the crumb topping. >> is this the easiest of the toppings the crumb topping. >> very easy butter, flour, brown sugar and a pinch of salt. just crumble over the top of the pie. bake it hot like in a 400 degrees oven it is so good. >> i love the crumble. >> isn't it great? put a lot on because it really does enhance the sourness of those delicious cherries here is a very cute topping. this is the solid crust pie. and this you cut the little. if you have a round cookie cutter you can do that this let's the steam escape and your custody will get nice and crispy.
