cooler temperatures for inland valleys that have been so hot recently and that will stick with us into the holiday weekend. we will talk more about what's going on with the cooler air coming in in time for the fourth of july weekend and some events . mike has been watching the early commute. >> something on the bay bridge. midspan's folks make their way into san francisco. the on ramp from treasure island. reports of a disabled vehicle. it should clear quickly. i don't see a disturbance of flashing lights we will track that. we do expect that to clear. right now coming in from the north bay, no problems. out of the altamont pass, a little bit of slowing starting, the very beginning. emotions are high in the east bay as parents are fighting for what they say is the well-being of their kids. the oakland school district voted to once again close or consolidate 10 schools last night. we see that emotional response. >> reporter: ian -- dozens of

committee members and's parents talked about closing schools at this board meeting but the board still voted for a third time to close or merge 10 schools in oakland. emotions erupted as the oakland board of education voted to continue the plan to close schools. security was called and the meeting went into an immediate break. opponents said this was the bored's last chance to make it right. >> you lied to us and you are doing damage four years to black children in oakland. >> reporter: they revisited the issue for third time at the insistence of school parents. last month in protest, some parents and activists used into the parker k-8 campus and started running an unsanctioned summer camp with activities and meals. michelle jenkins was one of them. >> i'm devastated. i'm devastated because we all stepped in. we have lost sleep and

everything to keep our school. >> reporter: oakland unified demanded the group move out because it did not meet district standards for safety, supervision and background checks but jenkins said she had no choice and doesn't know what to do now. >> i don't know. i'm a working mom. i have to be up at 4:00 in the morning so i can take my kids to school. i'm not going to know anything about the new school and what's going on there. i got to go back to work. >> reporter: two board members voted to keep the schools open think new money is coming in from the state that could make up for funding gaps but ultimately the majority said the closures are needed due to low enrollment and budget constraints. >> we don't have enough qualified educators or principles to fill the vacancies and frankly, the rotating doors of cuts year after year is really very challenging and we are continuing does challenging but necessary. >> reporter: as a result parker

k-8 community day school are set to close in the fall and several more are scheduled to shutter next year. ian call, today in the bay. today, a make or break moment in the oakland is plans for a stadium at howard terminal. san francisco bay commissioners will either dash for the new stadium. -- if it is approved, several more hurdles still need to be cleared. major league baseball insist the a's may ultimately find a home elsewhere . vice president kamala harris is in the bay area this morning. air force 2 touchdown last night pick she was greeted by mayors of oakland and san francisco. today the vice president will be in los gatos for a big-money fundraiser hosted by microsoft executive kevin scott. cheryl hurd spoke with vice president harris and has more on her visit.

why it's important to connect with leaders of local government. >> one of the things the president and i had taken pride in is we both started in local government and have always coordinated come collaborated, and relied on the perspective of the mayors of america. so to see them and to talk about all the work that we have done in the work that is still get to do is important so i'm glad to be here and it's good to be back in the bay. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, today in the bay. many people it may be heading to the bay. abortion rights are being reshaped. but california's welcoming women from out-of-state, it will not pay for their travel to get here. the state budget includes $40 million to cover abortions for women who can't afford them including for women from other states. while activists hoped a travel fund would be part of that, governor newsom chose to

focus on strengthening and expanding california's existing abortion services. disappointed activists want more saying travel costs of the biggest barriers to getting an out-of-state abortion. the state justice department is warning about a data breach within the department exposing sensitive personal information for what may have been hundreds of thousands of people. this happen early this week when the state launched its 2022 firearms dashboard portal. that's when the department of justice posted online californians who have applied for conceal-carry permits over the last 10 years. this includes sensitive information like names and addresses, even criminal histories. within 24 hours the department had pulled the data offline . one airline is delaying it's about to merge with rival frontier. coming up, the reason for the pushback and how it may affect your booking. picking the right patch to jumpstart your career. what a new study is revealing about the best choice for colleges when it comes to students and what they should do when planng for ni

heading toward the golden gate bridge where they still need to move from cones finishing up overnight work. and starting in on today's work, let's check in with silvana. good morning. wall street is set to open lower as markets close a difficult first half to the year. the dow ending higher yesterday for the first time in three sessions for the s&p 500 and nasdaq fell for the third straight day. the dow and s&p on pace for the worst quarter since the first three months of 2020. the nasdaq set for its worst quarter since the financial crisis in 2008. the s&p is on track for the worst first have to a year since 1970 amid surging inflation, rising interest rates, and recession worries. in focus today on reports on jobless canes, personal income and spending, and manufacturing. spirit airlines is delaying a vote on the proposed merger with frontier scheduled for today until next friday.

it's the latest twist in the takeover battle for spirit as it continues talks with frontier and jetblue. reports say it may be difficult for the frontier deal to be approved by shareholders. spirit has repeatedly dismissed jetblue in favor of frontier, a deal it says has a better chance of being approved by regulators. either outcome would create the nation's fifth largest airline. new york is the best date for college grads to start a career according to a study from best colleges.com. rankings are based on cost of living, the average starting salary, number of job openings, diversity, percentage of young people commit women's equality, and level of fun. new york takes the top spot because of the high level of job opportunities and average starting salary outweighing the high cost of living. california is second followed by illinois, texas, and colorado. california ranks high in job openings, average starting salary and fun.

good morning, folks. we are looking at the south bay south 101. over an hour this morning we were tracking a traffic break and a crash that did clear. the final incident cleared from 101 and thole. typical morning push would be northbound through silicon valley. no problems into early for the commute to build but not for the altamont pass. we have a build. and that pale yellow does show where the road weather index is indicating some higher wind. the altamont pass, a note from chp. travel times are shown a great drive for the longer flow from antioch to highway 4 toward concord showing no delays . and hopefully it's a quiet start to the morning as we say the fog over san francisco. that will help to bring in cooler temperatures the next couple of days even for inland spots like antioch.

make plans to go to the park and enjoy time outdoors. we are starting with temperatures in the upper 50s but heading for the upper 60s at 11:00 and making it into the low 80s today. that is a major change in some spots. about 10 degrees. even colder than yesterday as highs head for 73 in dublin. napa, 77. 62 in san francisco. tomorrow it's basically the same. we are still feeling cooler than normal weather. coastal fog where temperatures stay in the 60s. as you head to the east they, we are in the low 80s with fairfield topping out at 83. on saturday it's looking nice but if you have beach plans, it's going to be hard to see. we will have low visibility, fall, missed, drizzle, and bring a jacket. san jose will have comfortable weather with highs around 71 as we take a look at palo alto, check out the weekend and how

those temperatures drop with a high of 66 on sunday. that is the coolest we will see. on the fourth of july, 73 degrees and then it starts to heat up once again toward next weekend. the seven-day forecast shows major changes ahead after having a week of very hot temperatures. now we are going below normal with highs reaching into the mid-70s by the weekend and into the holiday as temperatures stay in the 60s. and inland areas with the lower 60s on the coastline and more clouds and fog. we will continue to monitor that for the fourth of july. that is always the issue as we try to see the fireworks show. in today's climate in crisis we will highlight the issue of environmental injustice. that means not only seeing the impacts of climate change harming the environment, but it's disproportionately affecting racial and

area to reinstate the mandate. did it work? the answer depends on who you ask. alyssa gord is moving you forward from pleasanton. >> reporter: and alameda county, health leaders have been watching covid cases closely. when they surged in june, the county decided to return to an indoor mask mandate. it was the only bay area county to do so. when the two days later as cases started to decline, the rule was lifted. now the question is, did it work? we pulled state numbers for the seven-day average numbers of cases per 100,000 people and compare that to neighboring contra costa county. the rates look similar even though only one county required masks but an infectious disease expert said this doesn't tell the whole story. >> i don't think the proper question is nothing mask mandate work or not work. it's how it's applied and how it's best utilized and in what circumstances should it be best utilized in peerk >> reporter: the doctor believes alameda county made a reasonable decision to

reinstate its mandate. >> frankly, without the other cementing counties also having the mandate it diluted the effect alameda county solo mask mandate would have agreement among fairgoers there is a range of opinions about how the mandate went. >> i think it should continue personally for the safety of others. >> i don't think it's a good idea, quite frankly. it's a pain. >> i think having a mask mandate during a surge is the best course of action. >> reporter: dr. schwartzberg said mask mandates is still an important tool and if we see a significant increase in covid hospitalizations, local leaders may turn to them again. in the meantime, he says you should not be waiting for a mandate. >> there's no question that wearing a good mask properly that fits you well will protect you and it will protect others. >> reporter: alyssa gord, today in the bay. 4:52.
