starts us off. tom, good morning. how is it looking out there? >> hey kristen, welcome back to the usa. blue skies today. that is going help it. get there early. we've already got 200 consolations today. 400 yesterday. but most americans are driving. paying in some cases $5 and more a gallon for gas. if you have driving the worst time to hit the road is between noon and 9:00. and it is a big cliche, but pack your patience. more americans celebrating the fourth away from home frameworks the highways to the skyways. the great escape is well under way. and for some family, this independence day may also celebrate a freedom of sorts from covid with the youngest kids now eligible for vaccines. nearly 48 million people are traveling over this holiday.

a record 42 million by car despite record high gas prices for the fourth of july weekend. >> gas prices are insane. >> reporter: but even as drivers pay a national average $4.84 a gallon for regular, many families taking a trip this summer, going by car may still be the most affordable objection. for a vehicle getting average 25 miles per gallon from --. even kansas to denver, a nearly --. >> we'd love to go to disney world but getting there and staying there. it makes more sense to stay close. >> the flying public is also paying more. >> for fourth of july weekend, travelers paid an average about $440, up 45% compared to what

they would have paid in 2019 ren airfare. >> already rental car prices are bonkers. >> reporter: on thursday, delta pilots in the midst of a labor contract dispute ticketed several airports nationwide saying they are overworked as airlines, some of which have already trimmed back summer schedule, face an ongoing pilot shortage the wild card this weekend and beyond, the weather. >> -- florida, the southeastern u.s. >> reporter: all of it creating a rocky travel season over the fourth and through the summer. >> every flight we were on was overbooked it is going to get worse as the weekend comes on i'm sure. >> reporter: i got to tell you this tip or bit of information as we mentioned the airlines are cutting the schedules. today is the day delta and american and united all cut back their schedules effective today. so going forward the next week

or so, two weeks, three weeks, if you have a flight scheduled, check the schedule, make sure that your flight hasn't been rescheduled, rebooked. got to stay on top of it. >> really important piece of information. tom costello, thank you. joining us now with more what you can expect at the airport this is weekend. tsa administrator's at a busy reagan international airport good morning to you. we can already see the lines forming behind you can the country have faith in the tsa that you have enough workers to keep us safe and keep us going this holiday weekend? >> absolutely without question every airport in the country can have faith that we're going to keep our wait times standards to where they need to be. generally 30 minutes or left for a standing pang and 10 or less for pre check passagers. right now the wait time at reagan is about 5 minutes finish pre check and about 10 minutes for standard lane passengers. >> do you acknowledge though that the situation at airports across the country is just unacceptable and what did you do to prepare for this weekend. >> well the situation at airports is really busy. if we look at yesterday, for

example, we had 2.44 million passengers go through our screening checkpoints. compared to pre pandemic levels in 2019 that is about a 17% increase so there is a very large increase in passenger volume we expect that today is going to be busy of course and that sunday will be very busy. >> there is clearly a problem with staffing when it comes to the airlines and a lot of travelers get there, they want to check in the lines are already long that. leads to a domino effect when you get to the tsa line. are you in contact with the airlines and have you asked them what can we do to make this process better. >> we're in contact with the airlines and airports all the time just yesterday we held an annual weekly call with the airports across the country, the airlines and we talk about the projections if for coming weekend. so we've all level set for this weekend going forward. and then as the weekend proceeds

and things might change a little bit. we're in very close contact with them nationally and then at airports around the country. >> and as we've been reporting we are expecting travel at pre pandemic levels. when can people expect this log jam, these flight cancellations to even out, to get back to normal >>. >> well i think it's -- you are right, we're at pre pandemic levels and across the summer, fourth of july is going to be very busy. first couple weeks in august are going to be very busy. the middle of august and past labor day things get a little more calm and then we pick up again for thanksgiving. >> tsa administrative, david pekosky, thank you administrator, have a great fourth of july holiday. >> thank you, you do the same. another piece of the puzzle. the weather. for that dylan is in for al, bring us some good news.

>> not a lot going on across the country that would impact things negatively except along the gulf coast. popup showers and storms moisture from the south affecting houston and southwestern louisianas. as you are driving you are going to run into heavier downpours. you will run into pockets where you will need to slow down on the roads and could cause a bit of a backup. then going into saturday i think the northeast is going to be the area we could have some troubles if you can travel today. today is the day to do it. because we have along i-95 popup showers and storms that could be severe at times. especially later in the afternoon and evening. of course whenever there are thunderstorms in the area we will likely see the delays at the major airports in the northeast. in orange, that is the zone for saturday afternoon and evening gusts up to 60 miles per hour. down pour, cloud to ground lining and hail an inch or more in diameter

president biden before returning to watch condemning the courts abortion ruling. >> the one thing that has been destabilizing is the outrageous behavior of the supreme court of the united states. on overruling not only roe v. wade but essentially challenge the right to privacy. >> now he's urging congress to guarantee the right to an abortion calling for limited change to the senate rule known as the filibuster. but even though democrats control the senate, they don't have the votes for that. abortion is now prohibited or likely to be banned or restricted in ruffle half the country. in other states the future of abortion rights remains uncertainty. virginia's republican governor is pushing lawmakers to ban abortion after 15 weeks with exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother. >> virginias want fewer abortions not more.

we are back now with "today" wellness al's forecasting a hot holiday weekend along with dylan so with many of us ready to spend a lot of time outside we've called in nbc news medical contributor dr. natalie azar with important tips for all of us this is so timely. i was just telling you over the weekend you and my family went to a water park and saw a mom collapse because of heat exhaustion it is really scary what. should you look out for? >> absolutely. well i think just because we were talking about it before we started the segment and i said to you i hope they called 9-1 as the first thing to do as the first thing to do when you think somebody's had heat exhaustion or stroke. by definition a heatstroke is if somebody has a core body temperature of 104 or greater or they pass out. but because people don't walk around with digital thermometers

in their hands i want to point out other signs and symptoms of a heat stroke including confusion. you can also feel lightheaded. you can have a headache. you can feel nauseous. people assume if you have heatstroke you are going to have wet clammy, sweaty skin. in fact you don't. you have very dry, very red, very hot skin. the other thing is more exhaustion but the dry skin is a big, big warning sign for heatstroke. >> and once you realize someone is having a heatstroke you mentioned 9-1-1. what can you say should you ask somebody how do you feel and what is the first step >> the number one first thing to do if you suspect a heatstroke is to call 9-1-1 i always say err on the side of caution. if the person is okay new york city harm no foul but that is the first thing you want to do before you start administering
