that is we where we find ginger. what are investigators saying so far? >> reporter: it is like a bad dream that some homeowners are waking up to this morning. investigators are doing the work to confirm the cause of the fire. if you take a look at the home behind me, you can see the significant damage to the home. work is currently being done to cover the garage in six parts of the inside of the home where the fire spread. we spoke to the homeowner who says that he heard what sounded like a firework that didn't completely go off. that happened around one 1:00 in the morning.'s dog started barking and came outside to see nothing but flames in the driveway making its way inside of the home. it is believed the car caught fire first and spread inside. ironically they rescued the dog in december and months after the dog ended up saving their

lives.>> everything was going crazy. we got to the back we strive to make sure we were okay in the back and recalled 911. the smoke alarms did not go off. there were no smoke alarms. check your smoke alarms. get good smoke alarms. we are really lucky. we shouldn't be here. >> reporter: this wasn't the only fire last night that is believed to be caused by an illegal firework or fireworks. you can see the flame that destroyed this a home. flames quickly took over the home. it started just after 9:00 last night when firefighters arrived they say that flames were already inside of the house. they believe it was started by people setting off fireworks in

the area. the family was able to make it out safely but they fear the home is a total loss. they responded to about 30 fires last night. nine of which they know were caused by a fireworks. many more are suspected. they were busy responding to fires they suspect were caused by illegal fireworks. there is plenty of gratitude by the homeowner that we spoke to to just make it out alive. >> his perspective is so admirable. has gratitude for something that someone else did to his home. thank you so much, ginger. firefighters are the middle of a fierce battle to the north of us. evacuations are in effect as the electoral fire burns out of control. this is nearly 1000 acres of birding. the fire burning in the alma door county area just south of the city of jackson. the fire knocked out fire to more than 2000 customers and is

86:56, we are moving forward with a look at the top stories in the day in the bay. this morning, yet another community in america is reeling following a mass shooting. investigators in highland park, illinois, say that they have the high-powered rifle used in yesterday's mass shooting at a fourth of july parade. six people died, at least another 38 are injured. authorities have a person of interest in custody, and that young man is not yet being called a suspect authorities to say the gun contained a unique serial number, which will reveal who bought it and when. the today show is on the ground in highland park this morning. coming up in just a few minutes, we will have comprehensive coverage, including an interview with the city's mayor as yet another community tries to pick up the pieces following mass the gun violence. that is coming up at 7:00 right after today in the bay. doctors are expecting

another corona surge. this is happening after the holiday celebration, but some fear that the latest sub variant may make this one worse. at least compared to other covid concerns. >> we take a look at how it could impact your family. chris? >> reporter: well, the infection expert say that this omicron sub variant may create a lot of frustration and uncertainty, because it appears to be mild but more contagious and immunity resistant. meaning if you recently had covid, you are now at risk. >> if you had omicron recently, you were not going to get that get out of jail pass as much as you would like, unfortunately. >> here is the fallout from that. all bay area counties are now in the cdc's highest level of covid transmission. the good news here is that while case rates are going up, hospitalizations or not. the bay area not an island though, these are the cdc's high level of covid transmissions. the bay area is seeing 351 new cases a week on average, which
