5:33 am
been on the november ballot that would've asked voters if the city of oakland should invest nearly $1 billion to build a new ballpark for the oakland a's. councilmember gile who thinks that they should build at the current coliseum site suggested this measure to gauge public opinion of the proposed terminal site and perhaps put an end to it. the east oakland stadium and alliance which is suing the stop the howard terminal project argued that the city would be subsidizing the billionaire owner of the a's. the a's and the mayor, they were against this ballot measure, saying it would delay the project and jeopardize the team, the mayor says in part, a nonbinding advisory measure would've jeopardized keeping the a's in oakland, and cost taxpayers as much as $1 million and done nothing but provide special interest with opportunity to spread this information.
5:34 am
the oakland city council has provided clear direction in our negotiations with the a's, oakland taxpayers will be protected from the cost of the ballpark and associated development, we have learned from the mistakes of the past, and we won't repeat them again. that was the mayor in a statement released overnight. marcus, chris? thank you very much, bob. bay area legend and international superstar, santana, collapsed on stage during the performance outside of detroit. this happened late last night at the music theater in michigan. paramedics rushed to the stage to try to help him. an audience member walked us through the moment it happened. >> mister santana like seems to like trip a little bit and then he went and sat down on a piece of equivalent and then the next thing we knew, all music stopped, and then everything went black. >> everything went black and the concert was canceled after that incident. a spokesperson says he was overtaken by heat exhaustion
5:35 am
and dehydration. he was rushed to a hospital but his manager says he is doing well. santana is 74 years old. he grew up in san francisco as you probably know, he went to mission high school and he was in the bay area two weeks ago touring with earth, wind, and fire. >> we're learning more details on just how deadly 4 july weekend was across the nation. all of this comes on the heels of the deadly parade mass shooting in illinois. i want you to take a look at this map here. that highlights the number of mass shootings for states across the country. look at that. there were 23 nationwide from july 1 to july 4. now, as calls for change ramp up again, we are learning the names of those victims killed in the highland park illinois shooting on monday. among them, irena and kevin mccarthy, a married couple's two-year-old child survived that shooting, nicholas, this is the grandfather and dad of eight children who was visiting
5:36 am
his family from mexico when he was killed. here is today in the base, kathy, with more on these stories. >> chris, marcus, good morning to you both. a community of highland park is waking up with heavy hearts, yesterday, officials publicly identified six of the seven victims and they included a grandfather in his late 70s who recently moved to the area, from mexico, also a preschool teacher and event coordinator at a synagogue and a young couple in their 30s, who now leave behind a two-year-old son. meanwhile, several people are still hospitalized this morning, many of them recovering from gunshot wounds, and as far as the investigation goes, we know that the suspect preplanned this attack, he launched a barrage of bullets from the rooftop, we are told 70 rounds onto the crowd below, and he apparently disguised himself as a woman to maneuver through the crowd, and escape.
5:37 am
later on today, he will be making his first court appearance and of course we will have much more on the investigation, and the victims, coming up on today. it is 5:36 am, we want to turn now to our climate in crisis. are states drought conditions now prompting leaders of the north bay to discuss the long- range impact, the lack of rain will have on the russian river in sonoma county. the talks will take place during a virtual town hall tomorrow, the briefing will include a panel of experts who will break down the current drought conditions, that impact the drought, will likely have on the russian river water quality. local drought emergence the was issued back on april 27. since then, the russian river has experienced a third consecutive year of below average rainfall, like sonoma near historic lows, the first five months of 2022 have been the second driest in sonoma
5:38 am
county, and 128 years. meanwhile, we have been tracking all of this, we talk about it all the time. the conditions there are really tough. you are updating us on what we can see right here. >> take a look at the past three years the rainfall totals that we have measured and we have really compiled all of this data from sacramento over the past three years and only gotten 59% of our normal amount of rainfall, and then you take a look at san francisco, over the past three years, we have gotten 56% of our normal amount, the worst is san jose getting only half of what we normally measure, over the course of three years, we have had 40 inches of rainfall but la, southern california actually doing a little bit better with 77% of the normal amount of rainfall, and then of course that reminder as we take a look at the drought monitor, that we are in a severe drought here in the bay area but it gets really bad, the highest category with the dark red of exceptional for much of the
5:39 am
southern sierra, into the central valley, and for the bay area, once again, dry in the summer months because of a lack of rainfall we have had from the past three years. we will talk about hotter weather in our forecast coming up, mike, any issues popping up for the commute? >> it is pretty calm so i give folks a look and predicting some unexpected slowing if you're traveling past the coliseum midday because the a's play 12:37 pm, that is a very specific start time, that is what we are given by the mlb, there will be some slowing around the 66, right now, too early for that portion of the bay to have any slowing, we just have the slightest build four westbound 37, and over at the bay bridge, we see a little bit of slowing as you head up, and light traffic flow, just fine getting into and out of san francisco on the bay bridge.
5:40 am
san jose has the flight slowing from north 101. we will take a look, coming up. new this morning, most schools will offer transitional kindergarten this fall, but according to the ij, the moves comes after the state mandated tk for all four-year-olds last fall. however, at least one school district, larkspur corte madera, says it will not offer tk in the fall because of financial constraints. be cited -- california provides money for tk to state-funded. a toddler is shot in oakland, ahead for you here, the police are making please right now. the president of the united states, could they be from california? we will take a look at the pulse. >> how which -- how much would you pay to feel like one of the best athletes in the world. we are not talking about hiring

5:43 am
happy wednesday to you, the time now is 5:43 am. let's take a live look at site in san francisco where the fog is rolling across the bay and we can see the clouds overhead, it has been very humid and today we will see the sun peeking out, during the afternoon with temperatures
5:44 am
headed for the upper 60s before the inland areas, all of those clouds provide cooling and we will talk about that in our forecast, coming up. this looks very dark, it is pointed down at the ground. it is coming up, but the headlights are still on here. this is where the slowing is, on northbound 101. we will show you how widespread that is, and a couple other spots where the commute is starting to build. now to a disturbing incident in oakland, where a three-year-old boy is not recovering following a shooting. police officers were called to a car on 26th avenue on monday night, investigators say they found the child was extremely -- with extreme wounds to his abdomen. >> due to the injuries, are officers elected to medially transport the child to the hospital in their patrol vehicles for treatment. medical staff advised that the officers not elected to transport this child in their vehicles, this child would not have survived his injuries.

please say the shooting appears to be accidental, and they suspect a relative fired that shot but they haven't identified which one. they are urging that family member to come forward. just into our newsroom, tsa checkers, they will catch a record number of guns at airport checkpoints this year. tsa says for the first half of the year, more than 3000 were stopped. the average amounts to 17 each day, we are talking about guns here, last year tsa reported a new high with just under 6000 guns captured or confiscated. president biden is headed to ohio today to explain to union members how the government is protecting their pension. >> a lot of us, the pension is very hard. >> good morning to you, congress stepping in to help save those pensions, the american rescue plan financial special assistance program, it is a mouthful, it shores up
5:46 am
what is already existing programs, the gunman's pension guarantee, looking at this from a political perspective, the visit to ohio, the president is traveling to a key state and reinforcing his long park tuesday, the location of that horrific fourth of july shooting, she asked the community to hold each other tight as they work through their grief, and said washington needs to continue its work on gun control. now, a new yahoo poll shows a theoretical race between vice president harris and former president donald trump could go either way, essentially a tie. if the candidate where the california governor, governor newsom, newsom would come out slightly ahead. also, against florida governor, ron, another rumored presidential contender, newsom led 39% to 36%.
5:47 am
harris fared better against ron. we should note, though he says he is not running, governor newsom bought ads in florida. >> i urge all of you living in florida to join the fight, or join us in california where we still believe in freedom. freedom of speech. freedom to choose, freedom from hate and the freedom to love. >> speaking of former president trump, the house select committee investigating the attack on the u.s. capital will probe the relationship between the former president and extremist groups like proud boys according to representative, adam, the hearing is set for tuesday, 7:00 am our time, and nbc area will carry a that has had abc and cbs. you recall the recent hearing focused on trump's attempt to overturn election results, that has resulted in the subpoena of several people, including the president's former attorney, rudy giuliani, and south carolina senator, lindsey graham. rudy giuliani showed up at
5:48 am
georgia state house, with claims about suitcases full of votes had been added to the system. that claim had been easily debunked when he set them. as for graham, graham had made several of his own phone calls to georgia officials. we're tracking everything happening with the president in the white house and talking about it on social media, on twitter, you can find me. >> 6:48 am, happening today, a meeting to debate the opening of a south bay parking lot, this is for people living in their cars and rvs. that lot located at the light rail station, san jose councilmember, jiminez, is proposing that they use that as a safe parking program. i want to show you some video, this is that lot when it was used as a covid-19 mass vaccination clinic , today's
5:49 am
meeting starts at 6:00 pm and can be accessed on zoom. pennypinching in the grocery aisle is becoming more and more common as the cost of groceries continues to rise and in just the last couple days, prices jumped on items like eggs and dairy products, and vegetables as well. consumers are now reporting that they are buying less meat to cut costs, as well as opting for generic brands and sale items. but, not all of that is bad. one personal-finance expert says that even with inflation, it is possible to save, as long as you know what you are looking for. >> plant-based proteins like beans are great, things like that, because they tend to be a little bit more dense, and a lot less expensive, but for the most part, if you follow a good system you're able to buy everything on your list with the savings, you will be able to save money and get everything on your list. >> coming up on today, learn how to put together a food plan that makes use of what you have while minimizing the impact on your wallet. that is ahead at 7:00 am, right

5:51 am
paycheck. >> [ laughter ] >> that is sometimes how it goes. >> [ laughter ] >> that is a great cause. that is a great thing he is doing. i guess with the bronze and silver metals, you might be like okay, i have all of these gold once. >> i am feeling like i am an olympic swimmer going through all of this humid and muggy what it whether. >> okay, it is super humid so don't even worry about the extra time getting ready this morning, to do your hair. as we take a live look outside in san rafael this morning we are starting out with a nice quiet start with no fog here, as you head over toward walnut creek, we are seeing a mostly cloudy start and temperatures in the low 60s and as we go to the bay, the humidity starts to drop more. the sky will clear and our
5:52 am
temperatures had for the mid- 70s for the middle of the afternoon. at 6:00 am we are at 72 degrees. i think that is perfect for thinking about going for a nice walk after dinner or enjoying more of the time outside today. as san jose has for 80 degrees, we will see temperatures in oakland reaching 73, 81 in napa and we will see more of the same tomorrow. all of that coastal fog that we have seen and a cool wind bringing that inland has really helped us out, but that breeze starts to weaken as we head toward friday, and the inlet temperatures starts to head up, so we are looking at upper 80s for concord, and fairfield, and some mid-80s for morgan hill, while san jose still gets just enough of a breeze to keep those temperatures in the 70s, as we go toward the end of the weekend, the heat starts to ramp up as that high-pressure gets more intense, over the desert southwest and even the very bright colors that we are seeing there, showing some possible record highs there, to
5:53 am
our east, and some of that heat is starting to make its way into the bay area. take a look at livermore, and by sunday into monday, we are back in the mid-90s, thankfully that spike in temperatures doesn't last that long but we are still looking at some much warmer weather compared to what we have had recently, today even though it is muggy to start, we will see the humidity dropping and a nice day and one of the cooler days we will see over the next seven. mike, you are tracking a couple of minor issues but it seems pretty quiet. >> nothing unexpected, there is flowing in the south bay, we show that on a live camera, the sensors are starting to shift around, a little more focused just north of 680 but easing up toward oakland road, that is for north 101. that should be the first build we have. in about an hour, we will see more traffic building there. off of marsh creek, about under 25 minutes still but over 20 as you are heading down 4580. we have this report of a disabled trailer, i think we should get to the shoulder just fine, everything is clear once you pass by the road, and no major problems getting by, we
5:54 am
will show you that soon, i want to give a few more minutes for the build. back to you. happening now, california nonprofits will be receiving another $30 million from the state department of social services, to address anti-asian hate. this is a part of a $166 million purchase approved for an anti- asian, i am sorry, anti-hate resources. san francisco teams have authored that legislation, and we will talk about that latest round of grants. for anyone who attended parties over pride weekend in the bay area, next, on today in the bay, the new infections being tied to 2 separate celebrations, it is not covid- 19. then, firefighters are working through the night to get a wildfire under control and we will show you where containment stands this morning on the electra fire. also the
5:55 am
5:56 am
5:57 am
welcome back. you are watching today in the bay, this morning, there is growing concern over a second case of monkeypox which is being tied to recent pride celebrations. the two new reported cases are from people who attended the
5:58 am
burning man afterglow party, and the electrolux party, this was during pride weekend. attendees are now being encouraged to get tested and get vaccinated for monkeypox, monkeypox is transmitted mainly through skin to skin and sexual contact, doctors say it may sound and look like it, but it is rarely fatal. >> it is not a disease that is going to kill people although there are rare fatalities reported, it is much more of a you know, one of these nasty rash illnesses, that hurt, that take you off the, basically you end up being isolated for days to weeks until the lesion scabbed over. >> while there are hundreds of cases in europe, there have been fewer than two dozen cases of monkeypox in san francisco so far. with the season now about halfway over, there is still time to right the ship, the giants are smack dab in the middle of a really painful tailspin. the giants took a lead, 2-1,
5:59 am
heading into the eighth inning, but the wheels came off the bus where they gave up five runs including a three run home run, marcus, i hope you went to bed early because the giants lost, 6-2. they have now lost six in a row, and 12 for the last 15. that is a skid. >> not so great. the a's are hitting halfway point already playing for next year, last night at the coliseum, they still put a fight against toronto, stephen hit a homerun there in the fifth inning as the a's win the game, 5-3. you know what, summer is here which means that you and your family friendly planning for the summer getaway, they are really fun. that is if you haven't already started to plan. >> okay, so there is something that is coming back, one of the most popular outdoor activities, camping.
6:00 am
are you game? >> it depends on how we can. >> [ laughter ] >> this morning, today's summer savings series continues with an old vacation favorite, the great outdoors, and with americans facing the highest inflation rates in more than 40 years, you might be finding it tough to splurge on a big trip. camping might be a good option. you saw her there, there is vicki, senior consumer investigative correspondent, she explains that there are a lot of cheap adventures to be had outside. >> good morning, inflation is hitting us every day. you can still enjoy the great outdoors, without busting your budget, i will show you how, later on this morning, on today. i had on today, vicki will share how to get back to vacation basics with the plans you need and the stuff you don't need, that is at 7:00 am right after today in the bay. next on today in the bay at 6:00 am, we are
