spreads right here in the bay area. ginger is live this morning for us, ginger, let's talk about this, will this new variant takes -- take us back some steps? >> marcus, the hope is that it will not, we have been making some progress forward and i think the majority of people would like for it to stay that way, but there is concern about this new variant because of the high transmissibility and a higher risk for reinfection. doctors still say we have effective tools that can help protect our children when they go back to school, or hospitals and moving forward, doctor peter says there are a couple things that have concerned him about this variant, he hopes it doesn't lead to disruptions in certain industries once again, especially the service industry and that hospitals may become overwhelmed with patients, right now he says hospitals are in good shape but he is seeing more people who are not boosted and he doesn't want to see them end up in hospital. >> we won't see as much of a

surge as not letting up in these high levels of transmission that we are seeing, it is kind of like a big water tank, there is a pipe going out, the water level goes down and we are done. >> now he says there is a water pipe that is still going into that water tank, his analogy is saying that that is the reinfection with this new variant. we spoke about how california will not be bringing back that mass mandate. face coverings are one recommended but will not be required. they are really optimizing that air quality inside the classrooms to make sure that students and staff stay safe. it seems like we are in the phase of learning how to live with covid-19 and we can see that with the listing of these mandates and with how people say they feel. check out this poll, a recent ap north pole that has 54% of americans saying their lives

tattoos and his identity. >> reporter: investigators also revealing several years ago, law enforcement responded to a threat at his home. >> the police removed 16 knives, a doctor, and a sword from his home. >> reporter: other signs of trouble found on social media. where the suspect recently posted music videos referencing mass murder. some who knew him say he was interested in weapons, but they did not imagine something like this. >> i could not see him doing that. i think that i have gone to school for 13 years with somebody that is capable of mass murder? it makes no sense to me. >> reporter: the white house promising to standby and other community as it tries to heal from gun violence. prosecutors say more charges related to each of the shooting victims are expected, including attempted murder, and aggravated battery. marcus? chris? >> bree jackson in washington, thank you. we are still learning more about the victims, as the loved

ones they left behind. including a toddler, orphaned because of this tragedy. among those killed, kevin and irena mccarthy, a go fund me page raising money to help the mccarthys 2 your sold -- 2-year- old son, aidan. kevin died while shielding his son from the gunfire, that toddler was eventually rescued by good samaritans. according to the fundraising page, aidan will now be raised by family members. to learn more about the shooting investigation as it unfolds, you can head over to nbc bay area.com, we have committed ourselves to updating the story as those development come in, you can find those posts there on our page, 24/7. happening today, jury deliberations continue in the fraud case of former chief operating officer of theranos, sunny balwani is accused of misleading investors, his ex- girlfriend, theranos founder, holmes, was convicted of

fraud, she is expected to be sentenced in september. if convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison. happening now, a wildfire still burning out of control in amador county, firefighters are working through the night to try to get those flames under control, but it is a tough fight. this is east of sacramento, and so far, flames have scorched 3900 acres and it is only 5% contained, of course we will get a better look one-state what happens. at least 100 structures are under threat, evacuation orders are still in effect, and those who live in the area are hoping cruise can save their home. >> we just kind of keep our fingers crossed and hope the weather cooperates and that we make it through this okay. >> another concern is that the fire threatens critical power infrastructure which, if it is wiped out, could affect the entire states power grid, meteorologist, carrie, has been tracking this, and this is not

the kind of terrain that is easy for firefighters. >> when you think about how hard it is, just to go for a hike and some of those areas and so think about firefighters on the ground trying to tackle this and we can see the impact, all of those blue dots show where we have had fire reported or threats over the past 24 hours. it shows active fire in that area around the electra fire, and right now this morning, temperatures are in the mid- 50s, humidity is at 94%, so when humidity is high, the fire tends to spread a lot slower, as we go throughout the day, it starts to kind of pick up in forward speed as we are seeing temperatures headed for the low 80s today, and humidity dropping to 34%, very little containment here unfortunately and so hopefully they start to get the upper hand here, with more favorable weather. we will continue to monitor that, mike, you are checking in where we can find lower gas prices. >> we took a look to find some of the lowest gas prices if you need to fill up, san jose top number here is at the spartan on south fourth street, charging $5.89 a gallon. at the super stop, $5.79 per

outside where we are starting with a few clouds rolling by but you can see the sun in the background, and the sun will continue to break out from behind those clouds, as we head toward the late morning hours and this afternoon is looking beautiful, really nice comfortable temperatures, but it is about to heat up. we will talk about that in the forecast coming up. a live look at the golden gate bridge, this is an easy drive. it is also filed. i am checking out that report, to let you know what direction to go, coming up. very happy wednesday to you, they raised interest rates again and it should give us a better idea about what is ahead. you may not be able to tell from the numbers but there is a pretty solid rally on wall street tuesday, the first day of training after the long holiday weekend. tech stocks are performing well with money flowing back into companies like apple and

nvidia. a group of senators sent a letter to the federal trade commission tuesday, asking that agency to probe tiktok as it happens, one of the commissioners of the fcc is get at people's phone data through tiktok than it is letting on. amazon has purchased a minor ownership in the food delivery system, grub hub, and will offer amazon prime users free delivery from select restaurants, when the bill is greater than $12. amazon once dabbled with its own food delivery company called amazon restaurants, and some other good news on energy prices, the price of a barrel of west texas intermediate, briefly fell below $100. it is back up above 100, now, but we will take what we can get. energy prices rise and fall with demand and speculators are speculating demand will fall as the economy slows down.

next potluck. >> for some reason, it is always the places where you know, the dipping sauce is really what is wrong with it. it needs to be like well seasoned. i am going with like tate -- kfc or popeyes. >> we are hearing reports of the tunnel, mike, that is not fried chicken? >> know. definitely not. let's get you started with this morning as we are seeing some clouds rolling by, and we have a cloudy start, we have seen these days in san jose, where we see that marine layer rolling by but then as we go into the noon hour, the sun breaks out and our temperatures had for the mid-70s. we are going to see another really nice day in san jose, reaching about 80 degrees, we have seen some low 80s which is about normal for early july, we are in july now, we are headed for 77 in dublin, and 73 in oakland, more of the same tomorrow, the fog is not

budging from that coastline so it does a mostly cloudy in san francisco, but we get a little bit more clearing as we head toward the weekend and some of our valleys have mid-80s, upper 80s in some spots, and then more intense heat headed into the bay area, especially for the valleys as we start to see a large area of high pressure and some really intense desert southwest heat, starting to nudge its way into the central valley into parts of the bay area as well. check out san jose, and our 10 day temperatures. nice and comfortable, the natural air conditioning continues through saturday. then it turns off. on sunday and monday, we are up to the upper 80s and low 90s, and slightly lower for the beginning of next week. take a look at the seven day forecast. once again, this is going to be the coolest day we will see in quite a while. even though it has been pretty muggy, the humidity will be dropping and we are in for a very nice afternoon. mike, you were talking about that tunnel. >> the smoke there, i hope it

is not a fire but smoke is reported, sometimes it is a car with mechanical issues. reported in one of your westbound tunnels, that is in your commute direction. that will be what is going on here, heading in the commute direction, no reports of closure or any other problems, someone called that in so we will track that, we have great exhaust systems in those tunnels. we don't see any slowing, we will track it. we have highway 437 and at the bay bridge toll plaza, we are starting to see that fill in about halfway, so a light build around the rest of the bay, back to you. >> nbc bay area response. a car that passes a 150 point inspection needs 15 grand in repairs.

good morning. the used bmw we are talking about is new to stacy joe in fremont, she says it only has 51,000 miles on the odometer, and the car looks good but there is a mess under the hood. stacy said she had steering and engine trouble a few months after taking it home. a mechanics and discovered tons of problems including a zip tie

we are feeling a little bit maggie this morning. >> we can see that as we take a life look outside in dublin. our temperatures in the low 60s. it is a little bit warmer. we do have a nice day ahead. that temperature will be dropping. fog near the coast and upper 60s in san francisco. no smoke and no fire? >> a great update. no smoke and no fire. the initial report may have been one vehicle with some issues. great for a smooth flow of traffic. the metering lights are run. slowing for 37. everything else is looking good as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the

lights have been on for about 45 minutes. almost all of the lanes are filled. that means it is not taxed in. no problems at the incline. as you narrow we lose about half the lanes where we have almost 20 lanes. the speed sensors are moving smoothly as well. no issues as you come down the peninsula. new details. voters will not get a say in the plans for a new stadium. >> the oakland city council voted down a ballot measure and it was a late-night. >> it was. after 11 hours of debate and a 5-2 vote, the oakland city council voted down the proposed ballot measure for november that would have asked

voters if they should invest nearly $1 billion to build a new ballpark at the howard terminal. there was a suggestion to gauge public opinion of the proposed howard terminal site. the eighth oakland stadium lines that was suing to stop the project i saying the city would be subsidizing the billionaire owner of the oakland aids. they were against the ballot measure saying it would delay the project. in a statement the mayor says in part, a nonbinding advisory measure would've jeopardized keeping the oakland agent open causing taxpayers as much as $1 million into nothing but provide special interests.

the oakland city council has provided clear direction and our negotiations and oakland taxpayers will be protected from the costs of the ballpark and associated development. we have learned from our mistakes in the past and we will not repeat them. >> thank you so much, bob. a scary moment for fans after international music star carlos santana collapses on stage. it happened early last night in clarkston, michigan. people and paramedics rushed to the station to help him. we talked to a audience member. >> mr. santana seem to trip a little bit and then he went and sat down on a piece of equipment and the next thing we knew, all the music stopped and then everything went black. >> the concert was canceled and santanas spokesperson says he was overtaken by heat exhaustion and dehydration. he was rushed to the hospital and his manager says he is

doing well. kailas was touring with earth, wind, and fire. he is 74. we are learning more details of how deadly this fourth of july weekend was across the nation. all of this comes on the heel of a deadly parade shooting in lno way. this highlights the number of mass shootings across the country. there were 23 from july 1 to july 4. a lot of people are talking about this. we are learning the names of those victims killed. among them, arena and kevin mccarthy. their two-year-old son survived that shooting. and nicholas toledo, he was visiting his family from mexico when he was shot and killed. here is more on their stories.

>> reporter: good morning to you both. the community of highland park is breaking up with heavy hearts. they identified six of the seven victims including a grandfather in his late 70s who recently moved to the area from mexico. also a preschool teacher and an events coordinator and a local synagogue and a couple and called the 30s that leave behind a two-year-old son. several people are still hospitalized this morning. as far as the investigation goes, we note the suspect preplanned this attack and launched a barrage of bullets from the rooftop. we are told 70 rounds onto the crowd below. he disguised himself as a woman to maneuver through the crowd and escape. later on today he will make his first court appearance.

we will have much more on the investigation and the victims coming up on today. i'd like to turn to our climate crisis. our states drug conditions are prompting discussion of the long-range impact. the talks will take place during a virtual town hall tomorrow. debrief will include a panel of experts that will break down the current drug conditions and the impact the drought will have on the russian river water quality. a local drought emergency issued on april 27, there is a can third consecutive year of below average rainfall. that has left leg sonoma and lake mendocino near historic lows. the first five months of 2022 have been the second driest in 128 years. we have been tracking all this.

i know you have updated data coming up. >> yes. we are looking at three-year rainfall totals and how much we have measured over the course of our water years. for sacramento, 54 inches of rainfall which is only 59% of normal. when we look at these normals about half of what we see in san jose. we have lost about a years worth of rainfall. we are taking a look at how dry it has been and how more we need to take us back up to normal. as you head toward parts of the southern sierra and the central valley, the dark red shading is the exceptional drought. in the bay area we are in a severe drought. after so many years of extremely dry conditions we

have a low water table and not a lot of water to work with. as we continue to our dry summer months, we will see discontinue. we do have some hope for the winter months, and we will keep you updated on that. we will talk more about elevated temperatures in the four cats. things are, right now but we are looking at kid for potential slowing. if you are expecting an evening game, to date the start time is 12:37 but of course, there will be slowing a couple of hours before that because they open the gates. afterword, you may encounter traffic leaving the area around 4:00 . those westbound pushes her on and the richmond bridge and the bay bridge where the meter lights are on. we are looking at drive times for contra costa. the biggest change is vasco road

accidental and they suspect it was a relative that fire the shot. they are urging the family member responsible to come forward. tsa checkers will check of record number of guns this year. for the first half of this year more than 3000 guns were confiscated. the average amounts to about 17 per day. last year there was a new high just under 6000. president biden is headed to ohio to speak to union members. the pandemic hit a lot of those pensions very hard. >> congress stepped in to save them. the american rescue plan, the special financial assistance. it shores up already existing programs like the government's pension guarantee. looking at

this visit to ohio from a political perspective, the president is reinforcing his long relationship with unions and working families. and vice president kamala harris was in highland park on tuesday, the location of that horrific fourth of july shooting. she said that washington needs to continue its work with gun control. a new poll shows a theoretical race between vice president harris and former president donald trump could go either way. if the candidate, gavin newsom, he comes out slightly ahead. against former governor ron desantis, newsom let 39% and harris fared better against ron desantis. the governor newsom just purchased tv ads in florida.
