5:07 am
out what could happen next. first i asked him how likely is it we will hit the recession. >> you know, it's not unlikely, right the traditional recession definition is two consecutive corners of declining or negative gdp. in the united states is essentially productivity. united states productivity is going down and not up and that usually leads to a recession. there are interesting components in this particular environment. we see the federal reserve raising interest rates to try to combat inflation. what we expect to drive down productivity, taking money off the table in the united states economy. but we have really strong employment numbers, especially in the bay area. we have san francisco on employment numbers at 1.9% i believe right now. so july will be an interesting month. july is when we get all
5:08 am
of the economic data for the quarter. so that is for q2 2022 and we get the cpi information, what inflation looks like. if inflation is high, gdp is down, not a good recipe. that usually means the feds will keep raising rates more dramatically, a strong likelihood we will see the recessionary environment. >> we hear people talking we are already in a recession so why do we hear people saying that already? >> it's interesting about the markets. we have seen a dramatic selloff in the u.s. stock market, 20% down, s&p 500. nasdaq down over 30%, technology sectors hard- hit by inflation increases. the markets are forward-looking mechanisms. we don't really care about what's happening today by equity or stocks. we care about what is happening in the near-term and midterm.
5:09 am
we want to participate in profits. if opportunity for profits goes down because of a recession equity valuation goes down. that is a lot of forward- looking information. now how the recession hit you personally, you may not see that really taking effect. you may see it taking effect in your 401(k) plan but we know we will not really utilize that 401(k) plan for a while, especially if you're working. that is not so dramatic personally. what we will see later on, the net effect of recession down the road. that will lead to all of a sudden layoffs. companies having to streamline operations, less consumer spending. that can hit home which is where you want to prepare if you think that is going to happen. >> you talked about a lot of great stuff. scott and i had a conversation going and so much more including the actions you can take right now to prepare for possible recession. don't miss out on that and watch the full story on roku, amazon firetv, apple tv by
