6:03 am
. we are awaiting news now. >> other video from the scene shows the shooting suspect being wrestled to the ground. authorities say that he is in his 40s and a local resident with a military background. the shotgun they say was homemade. shootings are extremely rare in japan. abe was the japan longest- serving prime minister and step down two years ago due to health problems. we will keep you updated throughout this newscast. our twitter page is also great resource for updates and are handle is nbc bay area. the white house committee investigating the general six attack and plans to hear from a crucial witness today. it is the former reston's white house lawyer. you may recall previously that he resisted cooperating with the committee.

6:05 am
interview and the latest appears comes after the panel issued a subpoena citing specific interesting evidence that mr. cipollone repeatedly braced legal and other concerns about the trump activities leading to and on january 6. this follows bombshell testimony from former white house aide cassidy hutchinson. >> mr. cipollone said something to the effect of please make sure we don't go to the capitol. we will get charged with any crime imaginable if we make that movement happen. >> reporter: considered critical to the committee investigation and u.s. capitol attack. >> he was present at some of the key moments we have already learned about from others who were in the room. the efforts to get the justice department to issue the bogus letter. >> reporter: panel members suggest that he could be the missing link with the information about the former president's actions that day and efforts to call off the rioters. >> the next public hearing is scheduled for tuesday.
6:06 am
committee member say that the focus will be on the mob that stormed the capitol, including far right extremist groups. >> that is brie jackson in washington this morning. happening today in washington, president biden scheduled to give remarks about protecting access to reproductive health services. he is also expected to sign an executive order. this comes two weeks after the supreme court ruling overturning the protection of roe v. wade. since the rolling biden stressed that his ability to protect abortion rights by executive action is limited without congress. considering get another big interest rate hike later this month which leads to even more questions that another recession could not be too far off. this comes as we were already dealing with record inflation. i spoke with sam gaeta with defined financial planning to find out more. i asked him how likely it is
6:07 am
for us to hit a recession. >> it is not unlikely. the traditional recession definition is two consecutive quarters of declining or negative gdp in the united states. that is essentially productivity. united states productivity is going down and not up. that usually leads to a recession. there is some interesting components in this particular environment. we are seeing the federal reserve raising interest rates to try to combat inflation which we expect to drive down productivity. we are taking money off of the table of the u.s. economy but we have really strong employment numbers. especially in the bay area, we have san francisco on appointment numbers at 1.9% i believe right now. so july is going to be an interesting month. july is when we get all of the economic data for the quarter,
6:08 am
so q2 of 2022. we will also get the cpi information, what inflation looks like. if inflation is still high, gdp down, that is not a good recipe. that usually means the fed will keep raising rates more dramatically and a strong likelihood we will see a recessionary environment. >> we hear people talking about that we are already in a recession so why do we hear people saying that already? >> what is interesting about the markets, we have seen a dramatic selloff in the united states stock market. 20% down for the s&p 500, nasdaq down over 30%. technology sector hard-hit by increases. the markets are forward-looking mechanisms so we don't really care about what is happening today when we are buying equity in stocks. we care about what will happen in the near-term and midterm. we want to participate in profits. if the opportunity for
6:09 am
those profits goes down because of recession, equity valuations go down. that is a lot of forward- looking information. how the recession hits you personally, you may not see that really taking effect and could see it taking effect in your 401(k) plan but we know we won't really utilize that 401(k) plan for a while, especially if you're working. so that is not so dramatic personally. what we see is later on, the net effect of recession down the road at least all of these layoffs. companies having to streamline operations, less consumer spending. that can hit home where you want to prepare if you think that will happen. >> i spoke with scott about so much more, including actions you can take right now to prepare for possible recession. watch the full interview on roku, amazon firetv and apple tv by downloading our nbc bay area streaming app.

6:16 am
number. we beat that expectation by 120,000. if you're saying to yourself that i thought the economy was in trouble, both are two at the same time. there are two jobs open for every worker. the jobs report shows the economic engine continues to run on all cylinders. but the fed keeps trying to throw the ranchin the engine to slow us down which is the job with the fed essentially. raise interest rates until the economy slows down and inflation with that. this number gets smaller and this number gets bigger. this is counterintuitive. you may, for instance, think that the stock market would be happy about a great jobs number. in fact, the markets will probably trade lower because investors are worried that the fed will see those numbers and get even more aggressive on interest rates. we will have a few months of everything amazing but at the same time it is not amazing and it is really bad.
6:17 am
the washington post reporting elon musk stop the working on funding that he needed to buy twitter. elon musk saying that twitter had more fake accounts that inspected but elon musk signed a deal to buy twittered no matter what with no contingency. twitter could make them stick with the deal and badly, badly overpay for the social network. this is security, can i help you, sir? >> this is security and is there something i can help you with? >> this security company uses specialized software cameras power with artificial intelligence the spot crime. the sentinel made a deal with businesses in downtown salinas and the company said they and cut property crime significantly there. the cameras alert the guard that is human when they see crime in progress meaning cameras learn what crime looks like. they apparently have a blind spot, flags, and we talked with the inventor. >> at any point in time when
6:18 am
the flag looks like it is doing something suspicious, it send it to the guard. we actually had to build the special a.i. just to identify flags that look like people. that was definitely not on our product roadmap when we launched the company but one of our key pieces of intellectual property and we actually patented it it. >> it almost sounds like a movie plot. someone will watch this interview and dress up as a flag. >> that is probably right. that is a you can beat it, right? >> david will be my guest right after meet the press on the nbc bay area on sunday. >> he is also the owner of the online company redfin.com is well. we talk about artificial intelligence what it means for society. for instance, cameras learn what crime looks like by watching crime. one thing that logically happens is that men are more likely to create property crime. it is just true. so the cameras say that men are
6:19 am
more suspicious than women. the cameras develop a bias on their own. or a.i. programmer sometimes accidentally bring their own bias into a.i.. how should we or could we keep bias out of a.i. or should we? it is a fascinating conversation . >> we are glad that he wrote an entire book about it. a.i. bias. it is interesting. it is 6:19 for you this morning. it is christmas in july for the fans the backstreet boys. the boy band getting ready to release the first ever holiday item, the holiday album. here is a sneak peek. the backstreet boys finally releasing a christmas album
