"the godfather." we're going to remember james caan's life and legacy in just a moment. >> harry smith will have a report for us. we're going to start this morning with that breaking news out of japan where the former prime minister shinzo abe was shot and killed overnight while he was delivering a speech at a campaign event. the shooter has been caught but the motive is still not known. >> abe was japan's longest-serving prime minister when he retired for health reasons back in 2020. secretary of state blinken speaking out at a g-20 meeting just a short time ago.

>> loss for the people of japan. >> and with gun violence front and center here in the united states, we should point out incidents like this one are extremely rare in japan. only ten reported last year. that left just one person dead. for the latest this morning, we're going to go to nbc's janis mackey frayer. she's been covering this shooting all night long. joins us now. hi, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. former japanese prime minister shinzo abe died after being shot in the chest and neck. japan's longest-serving prime minister, his death is profoundly shocking for the country where gun violence is almost nonexistence. the assassination all captured on video. a warning, it is disturbing. this morning a shocking attack with ripple effects across the world. former japanese prime minister

shinzo abe shot while giving a speech in western japan. video footage from nhk capturing the moment it happened. two shots hitting abe in the chest and neck. another angle showing smoke billowing. abe was airlifted to hospital with no vital signs. doctors say they tried resuscitating but abe passed away at 4:03 a.m. eastern time, profoundly rocking a country unaccustomed to gun violence. the suspected gunman was tackled by abe's secret service detail. police named him as 41 yamagami tetsuya and seized what they described as a homemade shotgun. the suspect told investigators he was not motivated by political beliefs but a dissatisfaction toward abe. gun violence is exceptionally rare in japan, its gun laws are

the most stringent in the world. though some guns are allowed for hunting, very few people go through the process of getting one. a person needs to pass through 12 steps including a gun safety class, a written exam, doctor's signoff and extensive background check to buy and own a firearm. abe is also a political giant. the longest-serving leader in japan's history with important ties to several u.s. presidents. he stepped down in 2020 citing health reasons. >> he is still one of the most visible if not the most visible japanese politician. there was a reason that he was out on the campaign trail. >> reporter: the u.s. among other leaders expressing condolences and alarm. >> profoundly disturbing. also such a strong personal loss for so many people. >> reporter: shinzo abe was a political giant, the country's longest serving prime minister and in many ways still prominent after stepping down.

he was credited with pulling up the economy. meeting with dozens of world leaders, golfing with president trump and taking president obama to hiroshima. president biden said he's stunned, outraged and deeply saddened calling abe's death a tragedy for japan and all who knew him. meanwhile, police say the suspect has admitted to the crime and they've confiscated several homemade guns from him. as how a gunman could get past abe's security, police say they're investigating that. people for now are laying flowers at the scene and, again, that abe's death was by gun violence will have a keep impact. >> janis mackey fr you. and this morning we're hearing more about the heroic actions of first responders and everyday people as one member of the suspect's family apologizes. maggie vespa is live for us.

good morning to you. >> reporter: yeah, craig, good morning. the police officers and the firefighters here in highland park were marching in the parade, they were there when the shooting started. this morning we're hearing from them. as you said, we're hearing from the suspect's family who has a message for a community shattered by violence. >> we're just sorry. we're sorry. we're very sorry. >> reporter: this morning an apology to the victims and their families in highland park. the suspected shooter's uncle who lives with his nephew minutes from the scene of the july 4th massacre saying he was shocked when he heard the news. >> i couldn't believe it. very hurt. no sleep. my whole life changed. >> reporter: also in that home, the suspect's dad who told the "new york post" that back in 2020 he sponsored his son's application for a firearm owner's identification card which authorities say the

suspect used to buy five weapons, including the one used in the shooting and this one found in his car. noting his son passed multiple background checks, the father insisting, i didn't do anything wrong. >> for this to happen here, you know, it hurts all of our officers. >> reporter: meanwhile, the tragedy, seven dead, dozens injured, weighs on first responders. >> people have said they immediately saw first responders run in the direction of the danger. >> it's not unexpected for my officers and firefighters. i absolutely expected that of them. >> reporter: and this morning, crushing stories of survival. father and son tom and morgan brooks ran to find and help the injured when they noticed something under a body. >> i told them, there's a child under him. dad, there's a child under him, we got to get him. >> reporter: it was 2-year-old aiden mccarthy. his father gunned down lying on

who pled guilty to drug charges in a russian court. griner has been in jail there since february. so what does this guilty plea mean for her sentence and does it pave the way for a prisoner swap? andrea mitchell has been following this story. good morning to you. >> good morning. brittney griner back in her russian jail cell today after pleading guilty to drug smuggling charges during the second day of her trial. her lawyers hope that showing contrition might bring her trial to conclusion by august instead of months later. the 6'9" center for the phoenix language she doesn't know. now saying she accidentally included vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. it could lead to a ten-year sentence. >> is there hope that this could shorten the sentence, get her

but she was recently found with two passport that are real, just not hers a $6,000 recent for plastic surgery and lies about who she was. >> reporter: the u.s. marshals' wanted sign for kaitlin armstrong now reads captured the search ending with a clear warning. >> no matter where crime is committed, no matter where you flee, you're not beyond the reach of the law. >> reporter: state, federal and international all collaborating to find a woman using three a names to hopscotch hostels around the region. >> it started the trail of narrowing down a path on kaitlin armstrong. >> reporter: the multicountry man hunt began with a warrant for armstrong's arrest in austin then a flight fleeing the

country with someone else's passport from newark, new jersey, and captured when authorities nabbed the 34-year-old on june 29th at a hostel in santa teresa beach don john's lodge, one of many places armstrong stayed. in between, her hair changed and she was found with a bandage on her nose and bruising under her eyes as well as the receipt discovered in a safe. >> what did the receipt show >> the receipt showed some type of surgery, plastic surgery -- >> reporter: to her nose >> i don't know if it was to the nose area. i know it was in the value of $6,000. >> reporter: detectives highlight strong circumstantial evidence, armstrong leaving the country days after questioning and her car spotted next to the house where the murder happened. the legal process is just beginning. >> the judge will instruct a jury about consciousness of guilt and both pieces evidence of serve as consciousness of her guilt.

>> reporter: strickland, the man police say was in the middle of the love triangle saying, we are grateful that investigators have pursued all leads and opened the path to justice for anna moriah wilson and her family. >> you just mentioned that authorities figured out that she left the country from newark which led them to costa rica do we know how they did that >> reporter: this got complicated, craig u.s. marshal service interviewed a person who tipped them off to the fact that she had been dropped off at newark. the problem is, she was using a real passport that was not hers. they had to do a wild card search, putting in names that are associated with kaitlin armstrong, friends and family members, but not her and hoped that one of them popped up, and it did moving forward, costa rican authorities stepped in, found the bus that she took from san jose, went down there, tracked her to santa teresa beach, went around knocking on doors and they found kaitlin armstrong. >> wow

violence is extremely rare. janis mackey frayer joins us with the latest on this breaking story and reaction around the world. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. former japanese prime minister shinzo abe was assassinated while giving a campaign speech. he was airlifted to hospital where he died a few hours later. the assassination captured on video, you can hear the two shots and from another angle, see smoke billowing above the crowd. the 41 year old suspected gunman was captured on the scene and police seized a homemade shotgun. the attack is deeply shocking for people in japan. it's a country where gun violence is almost nonexistent because so few people have guns. for a person to own or buy a firearm, they need to pass through 12 steps, including a gun safety course and an extensive background check. abe was also a political giant

in japan, still a prominent figure after stepping down. he met with dozens of world leaders including many u.s. presidents. fumio kishida, the current japanese prime minister just spoke. he had tears in his eyes describing the attack as barbaric and despicable. he added, quote, i just have no words. abe's death sending shockwaves around the world. hoda? >> janis mackey frayer for us on this breaking story. thank you. two weeks after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade, president biden will sign an executive order today in an attempt to safeguard access to abortion and other reproductive health care. peter alexander tells us how the order plans to achieve those goals. peter, what do we know? >> reporter: good morning. president biden has been under pressure from abortion rights

advocates to act, to do more after the supreme court reversed roe v. wade. today's action marks key but limited steps. he's going to direct the federal government to work to protect access to abortion and other reproductive services like contraception. this order that he's going to sign later this morning, it also instructs his administration to expand access to contraception. among the white house's efforts here to try to help ensure the safety of patients and providers, by sending mobile clinics to borders of neighboring states where abortion is now or soon to be illegal. privacy a key priority here as well, moving to protect against digital surveillance related to reproductive health care services so those women are not targeted. this order falls short of what some activists are asking for.

the president, again, push congress to guarantee the right to an abortion, but right now, craig, as you know well, the votes simply are not there. >> peter alexander from the white house, thank you. a new jobs report this morning will have washington, main street looking for signs of where the economy is heading. >> reporter: a much better employment report than expected. the economy added 372,000 jobs in june, that's about 100,000 more jobs than expected. the rate remains near 50-year lows and the country has more jobs than workers, which is a nice problem to have right now. meanwhile, earnings rose more than 5% year over year. because this report is strong, the federal reserve is expected to continue hiking rates this month to tame inflation running at 40-year highs. the fear, if the fed raises rates too much, it could push the economy into a recession.

consumer ♪ this morning on today's consumer confidential, something we haven't been able to say for a while, we've got good news for drivers. gas prices have finally started to come down. >> national average now about 29 cents below the record high that was set back on june 14th. erin mclaughlin joins us with more on why this is happening and what we can expect over the next few weeks hey, erin. >> reporter: good morning, guys. that's right the national average is now 12 cents lower than just a week ago. it might not seem like much, but this is the third week gas prices have gone down. a sign that maybe the worst of it could be in the rearview mirror at the height of the summer driving season, americans are finally catching a break at the pump >> we just got to adjust to what the new normal is and the new normal is, gas prices are coming down. >> reporter: oil prices dropped as fears of a recession take hold

while some drivers may be intentionally using less gas than before. >> the two key factors contributing to lower gasoline prices are the price of oil which has come down in the past couple of months and there's been less demand >> reporter: 80% of gas stations in the u.s. are charging less than $5 a gallon. >> has this made a difference so far? >> it's made a slight difference, yeah every little bit counts. >> reporter: prices are lowest across the southeast and highest in the west. in california, the average gallon is still above 6 bucks. >> i haven't noticed still the same for me, you know. it burns really fast. >> reporter: even in the state with the cheapest gas, drivers are still paying $1.38 a gallon more than they did at this time last year. >> stations are probably sitting on thousands and thousands of gallons of gasoline that they
