video. a warning. some images are disturbing to watch. across japan, a nation in mourning, with growing memorials and questions around the assassination of former prime minister shinzo abe. a hearse carrying his body from nara to his home in tokyo where his family will hold a closed funeral. the assassination captured in real-time. abe was giving a campaign speech when there was a shot fired. from another angle, you can see abe turn briefly. then the second shot. abe collapses as the suspected gunman was tackled. what police describe as a homemade shotgun made of metal pipes and tape seen lying on the street. little is known about the 41-year-old suspect tetsuma. he wanted to kill abe because of

a grudge. what is not clear is how he got close enough to kill him. shinzo abe was popular and polari polarizing. he took president obama to hero heroshim. >> he was an incredible leader. once in a generation and amazing partner to the united states. i think both our countries have lost a great leader and friend. >> reporter: in a county where strict gun laws make it hard to own a firearm, the brazen attack is shocking. this mourner said it is terrifying that something like this could happen. the biggest questions are around security. how is it that an armed man could get past the security detail and approach the riser from behind. how could he fire a first shot and then a second shot, the shot

that killed shinzo abe, before security officers stopped him? these are questions facing police. they are opening an internal probe to look at the flaws of the security plan. the funeral will be held monday and tuesday at a temple in tokyo and limited to family and those closet to him. peter. >> in a country of 126 million people and had one shooting death in 2021. janis mackey frayer, thank you. also this morning, family and friends of the victims of the illinois parade shooting are beginning to say their final farewells less than a week after that horrific day. this as new details emerge of the suspect's home life. kathy park is in highland park this morning. kathy, good morning. >> reporter: kristen, good morning to you. it has been a heartbreaking week for highland park as you can see

behind me a growing memorial honoring the lives lost. it is right next to the street forever changed by the tragedy. this community is leaning on each other as the funerals and healing begin. this morning, the community of highland park united in grief as funeral services begin for the victims in monday's mass shooting. among the seven killed, 78-year-old nicholas, a great grandfather and father to 8 who recently moved back from mexico to be with family. his sons who wore shirts honoring their father said their dad was always looking out for them. 63-year-old's jackie was a member of the congregation israel. family and friends of steven straus said he loved the symphony and daily walks. >> something has to be done.

it has to be done. >> reporter: the emotional tributes stretching on to the streets where memorials had been growing each day. hundreds tying orange ribbons raising awareness on gun violence. amid the final good-byes, dozens are recovering from injuries. including 8-year-old cooper roberts. now conscious, but paralyzed from the waist down. >> cooper was shot in the chest. he suffered significant injuries, including a severed spinal chord. >> reporter: the horror in highland park is now bringing on gun control measures. authorities say the suspected shooter used a semiautomatic rifle in the attack purchased legally. according to police records, the shooting happened three years after a family member reported him for threatening to kill everyone. between 2010 and 2014, police

were called to the family home nine times for domestic disputes. now investigators have said the accused gunman confessed to the attack. they determined o motive. they will come together to honor victims and demand an end to gun violence. kristen and peter. >> thank you, kathy. next week is another credit wall week with one more public hearing scheduled as house investigators interviewed a former trump top adviser. pat cipollone. maura barrett has the latest. she is traveling with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, peter, the committee has been waiting for months to hear from

the former trump counselor. they are drawing similarities with him and can he witness in the watergate hearings. nearly eight hours. that is how long pat cipollone testified on capitol hill on friday. inside, he entertained questions from the committee behind closed doors. >> i think he was candid with the committee. he was careful in his answers. i believe that he was honest. >> reporter: a source familiar with the testimony tells nbc news he is been a cooperative witness within the parameters. panel subpoenaed after the bombshell testimony telling how he urged staff to keep trump

away from the capitol hill on january 6th. >> mr. cipollone said keep him away from the capitol. we will get charged with every crime imaginable. >> something needs to be done. blood is going to be on your hands. >> reporter: with his testimony in private, there is anticipation that the interview will be played in public as soon as this week. at the watergate hearings in 1973, president nixon's white house counsel was the star witness. >> i said there was a cancer growing on the presidency. if the cancer was not removed, the president would be killed by it. >> reporter: history may repeat itself as soon as tuesday at the next public hearing where we may see cipollone testimony. in the meantime, the subject of the hearings is still holding rallies. he spoke last night in las vegas

saying democrats are using laws to criminalize their political opponents. he also revealed that rudy giuliani was hospitalized this week. nbc news learned giuliani had two stents placed to fix a heart problem. peter. >> thank you, maura barrett. >> let's bring in danny cevallos. danny, good morning. we know pat cipollone spoke with the committee earlier this year. this was the first recorded formal interview. what could he have said in the hours of testimony? >> pat cipollone said we will get charged with every crime imaginable. if that is true and he said that to hutchinson who is a low level staffer, what are the odds that

was the only person that cipollone said that to? that's what the committee wants to know. who else did he say that to and does that group including the president? if it does, that means the president may have been notified from white house counsel that this was a horrible idea. >> danny, the hold up for the committee trying to get cipollone to testify were his claims of executive privilege and attorney/client privilege. what does that tell us about what he would or would not have been able to speak about? >> in reality, these claims of executive privilege probably are not going to fly. perhaps cipollone raised them in order that the committee would force them to testify. number one, president biden has waved executive privilege. number two, what trump was doing on january 6th had nothing to do

with being the president. cipollone was white house counsel. that means counsel for the government. not trump the individual and not trump the candidate. that is a long shot claim as well. already courts have denied this claim of privilege in relation to trump's attempt to block records from the national archives. because cipollone was white house counsel and one counsel has testified for most watchers, that would further weaken the cipollone claim if he makes it of executive privilege as white house counsel. >> danny, we know there will be another hearing on tuesday. what will you watch? >> we're expecting this will focus on the groups. extremist groups who may or may not have been planning in the trump circle. that is where we see the

accounts. musk worth $219 billion and purchased twitter in april. he trash talked twitter on twitter. finally, came to agreement to buy the social media giant for $44 billion in may. that deal now very much in jeopardy. twitter chairman responding saying we are committed to close on the price and terms agreed upon with mr. musk. that could lock musk into the $44 billion purchase price. another outcome? a $1 billion contract fine to break the deal. twitter stock closed at $36.81 before the announcement on friday. the agreed purchase price was $54.20. some believe the fake twitter accounts is an excuse. >> he is reaching for something to blame. he has to pay. he has to buy the company. he agreed to it in a very strict

assassination of the former prime minister. the hearse carrying his body from nara where he died to his home in tokyo where his family will hold a closed funeral. abe was giving a campaign speech when a shot fired. from another angle, you see abe turn briefly. then the second shot. abe collapses as the suspected gunman was tackled. what police describe as a homemade shotgun made of metal pipes and tape seen lying on the street. little is known about the 41-year-old suspect. police say he admitted he wanted to kill abe because of the grudge. what isn't clear is how an armed man got close enough to abe to kill him. one of japan's most recognizable figures, shinzo abe, was popular yet polarizing. focused on restoring the

military tour to counter the rising threat from china. he took president obama to hiroshima. >> prime minister abe was an incredible leader. once in a generation. amaing partner to the united states. >> reporter: in a country where strict gun laws make it hard to own a firearm, the brazen attack is deeply shocking. this mourner said it's terrifying that something like this could happen. the biggest questions are around abe's security. how was an armed man able to approach that riser from behind and why was the gunman not stopped after the first shot? these are the questions that police are asking as they look at security failings. the funeral for shinzo abe will be held early next week. it will be at a temple in tokyo and limited to family and those

congregation and preschool teacher. and 80-year-old stephen straus was remembered for kindness and active for his age and took daily walks and loved his time watching the symphony. among the dozens injured, many still recovering from injuries. cooper was shot in the chest and now paralyzed from the waist down. meanwhile, as far as the investigation goes and for the accused gunman, he has confessed to the attack, but right now, we still don't have a motive. kristen and peter. >> a lot of strength for cooper. kathy, thank you for the report. a new surge in covid cases has new york city officials encouraging visitors to wear masks indoors. the positivity rate is up 14%. and cases are on the rise.
