"early today" starts right now >> germany on this monday. i'm cori coffin. >> and i'm phillip mena. we begin in yosemite national park, where the washburn fire is raging out of control. hundreds of firefighters are trying to keep the flames at bay, but persistently hot and dry conditions are making that very difficult rangers are taking preventative measures to protect the park's iconic sequoia trees, many of them thousands of years old. cal perry starts us off this morning from california. >> reporter: tonight, a look inside the intense fight to save the treasured sequoias of yosemite national park hot and dry conditions making it difficult for crews to put the fire down. at least 360 firefighters working around the clock in a desperate attempt to keep ahead of the flames. >> there's a lot of wood on the ground and that wood is going up in smoke >> reporter: making its way across rough terrain, the fire

has scorched nearly 1,600 acres and forced evacuations in nearby communities. >> by the time we got down in yosemite valley, ash was raining down on us there it will stick with me a long time to see how quickly the smoke took over. >> reporter: and endangering historic buildings like the galen clark cabin, now protected in fire suppression foil crews today setting up sprinklers around the grizzly giant, the most renowned sequoia in the entire park, more than 200 feet tall. we're less than a mile from the busiest entrances to the park. normally this area is a tourist hot spot today it's a literal hot spot. the state of california in a must-win situation >> they're among the oldest living things on earth they are iconic for the national park system. they're in a very limited range here in the sierra you only find them right here on the planet >> reporter: the reality is this is the hottest climate these trees have seen in their 3,000-year lifetime. >> they're really threatened by climate change and wildfire. in the last two or three years

we lost 20% of the population of giant sequoias you can bet we're doing everything we can to protect them >> our thanks to cal for that report all right. let's turn now to the developments in the january 6th investigation, which is expected to enter its final stretch this week long-time adviser to former president trump steve bannon is reversing course and offering to testify, just days before jury selection is set to begin in his criminal contempt trial. nbc's brie jackson is following these developments for us from d.c. brie, good morning bannon actually got the green light to testify from mr. trump himself? >> good morning. that's right steve bannon had been adamant that he could not comply with the subpoena because of executive privilege. but former president trump has waived his executive privilege claims, even though it's unclear if those protections applied in this case to begin with. now in a letter to bannon, mr. trump called the committee political thugs and hacks who have allowed no cross-examine or real republican witnesses.

according to his lawyer, bannon is willing to testify and prefers to do so as part of the live public hearsings, but committee members say that's unlikely and there is question about how much useful information bannon will provide >> i've interviewed steve bannon before i was one of the lead investigators for the russia prosecution for bannon's interview. i would expect zero, absolutely nothing. this guy was like interviewing the joker. he is maniacal he is insane and it was a frustrating hours' long interview where we did not learn very much. >> this cooperation from bannon comes white house lawyer pat cipollone was deposed for nearly eight hours on friday. some of that testimony is expected to be use in hearings this week. a source familiar with the planning tells nbc news a former spokesperson for the far right group the oath keepers will be a witness at the seventh public hearing, which is now scheduled
