prices on nearly everything. where to score the best deals today monday, july 11th, 2022. ♪♪ >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. hi, everybody, good morning. welcome to "today." it is monday morning. glad to have you along with us. 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. firefighters gearing up for another long day. >> yeah. the rush is on to save 600 giant sequoias in yosemite's mariposa grove. some of the great national treasures more than 3,000 years old. >> yeah, they're at risk from a rapidly growing wildfire. it exploded over the weekend, and it is 0% contained. so firefighters, they've evacuated the area. they're even installing some sprinklers around the trees so they can hope to protect them. >> the hot, dry, weather is not making it easier for firefighters.

al's here too. no relief in sight. he's going to give us the forecast they are facing in the coming days. let's get started with miguel almaguer. he's made his way to the front lines this morning. good morning. >> reporter: the southern entrance is just down the road behind me. can you see the flames are burning this area of the park. the flames are fairly low. that can be good for the forest land beneath the trees. the big worry is losing the majestic sequoias across the park. as flames devour portions of california's historic beauty, this morning efforts to save yosemite's 600 giant sequoias from the washburn fire are becoming more desperate. on the ground crews forging fire lines to try and contain the blaze. the heat so intense, it's reportedly launching tree branches hundreds of feet into the air. in one instance, narrowly missing the plane involved in the aerial attack. >> a branch went right over the

top of us. i don't want to take a chance of busting a window in an airplane. >> reporter: as crews close off roads, around 1,600 people have been forced to evacuate from homes and hotels. >> by the time we got down into yosemite valley, ash was raining down on us there also. >> reporter: in four days, the fire has torched more than 2,000 acres in yosemite national park and is now burning less than half a mile away from some of the most majestic trees in mariposa grove. the area home to the grizzly giant, a 3,000-year-old sequoia that stands some 200 feet tall. crews setting up sprinklers to protect the massive tree from the raging blaze. >> it's really hard to sit here and see that smoke and know that it could mean the groves are threatened. >> while sequoias are fire resistant, rising temperatures, drought, and a buildup of dense, dry vegetation has super charged these flames.

>> climate change is playing a role in how these fires burn. they're now hotter, faster and more explosive than ever before. >> we have hundreds of tons of wood per acre on the ground, and it's really, really dry. >> reporter: now is the scenic forest is smothered by the uncontrolled inferno, more than 500 firefighters are on defense trying to prevent centuries of history from going up in flames. >> and miguel, this actually comes at a time when these trees have been burning down at record rates there. >> reporter: that's right. they're being lost at a record rate. the fires in this area are just burning hotter, faster, and more explosive than before. fires have burned in this area behind me, this is the first time this place has actually reached this part of the park. firefighters are doing what they can to control the blaze behind me for the most part, though, no trees have been lost. savannah? >> miguel, thank you. >> and of course complicating the fight in california is that heat, and it's not just out

there out west, roughly 110 million people will see 90 degree temperatures today. al is tracking some of these sweltering temps. hey, al, good morning. >> good morning. and unfortunately we're not seeing any rain over the next five days in that region, and in fact, you can see so far this year a wide swath of areas having their driest year on record or top five driest years on record, and it is just going to continue, and in fact, 32 million people are under some sort of heat advisory, heat warning from the pacific northwest down through the southwest, all the way into texas and parts of the gulf coast. for today, texas, these are the records we could see today. in houston, tyler, texas, 107 in waco, 110 in del rio, texas. abilene, 106. tomorrow those temperatures, the heat index is going to feel triple digits in raleigh, savannah, memphis, jackson, down to galveston and dallas going to feel like 107 degrees. you'll see the heat will continue. temperatures upper 80s to 90s in

lexington, pittsburgh will be in the mid-80s, charlotte in the upper 80s, and memphis will see temperatures in the mid to upper 90s. guys. >> all right, al, thank you. >> we'll see you in a bit. we'll now move to the race to the finish for the january 6th committee. it reconvenes tomorrow, preparing to wrap up the year-long investigation into the storming of the u.s. capitol. steve bannon, one of former president trump's top allies reversing course and now saying he is willing to testify before the committee. nbc's capitol hill correspondent ali vitali live in washington for us this morning. hi, ali, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah, after a short break the january 6th committee is back for a new week of hearings and promising more revelations. but they also may be getting cooperation from an unlikely source. steve bannon now open to testifying, but there may be a catch as he says he wants to do this live and in public. the january 6th committee in the summer home stretch, a week of double hearings planned against the backdrop of trump ally steve

bannon saying he's now open to testifying. this after former president trump gave him the green light, waiving previous claims of executive privilege, those it's unclear those applied. trump claimed bannon's testimony would be protected because it contained confidential communications with the former president. the committee disputes that protection applies. now perhaps frustrated with the televised hearings as witnesses continue to come forward, trump changed his mind. it's an abrupt about-face for a previously defiant bannon, who's facing steep fines and jail time in his criminal contempt of congress charges. he made these comments the day before the riots. >> all hell is going to break loose tomorrow. >> reporter: the committee's also now armed with fresh testimony from trump's former white house lawyer pat cipollone who sat for nearly eight hours of questioning friday behind closed doors. >> it was important for us to understand what the president's top legal adviser thought about

the activities that were happening post-election and in the run up to january 6th. >> reporter: a new documentary shows trump again down playing that day. >> they were angry from the standpoint of what happened in the election because they're smart, and they see and they saw what happened. >> reporter: the committee will also continue to focus on trump's role, though much of the republican party is still rallying around the former president. a recent poll now showing more republicans consider january 6th a legitimate protest than a year ago and the hearings have made the republican phase of the committee, the conservative congresswoman becoming popular with some democrats. top democratic donors are now backing cheney who's in a tight re-election battle telling "the new york times" even though they don't support her policies, they appreciate her defense of democracy. and tuesday's afternoon hearing will focus on how the mob came to the capitol that day and include witness testimony from a former spokesman for a far right

extremist group the oath keepers. meantime, bannon's case is back before a d.c. court this morning, though he's not expected to be there himself. savannah. >> ali vitali on the hill. president biden says he is considering declaring a public health emergency in order to free up federal resources to promote abortion access. the president made those remarks to reporters during a bike ride near his family's delaware beach house declaring a public health emergency, it's a move that has been pushed by advocates, but white house officials have questioned both its legality and effectiveness. the president repeated that he wants congress to pass a federal law codifying roe versus wade after the supreme court reversed the landmark ruling last month. now to the latest on the assassination of former japanese prime mini overnight a private wake took place at a tokyo temple. that memorial coming as authorities gather new details about the alleged shooter's motive and the moments leading up to the attack. janis mackey frayer following all of this for us. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good

morning. a private funeral will be held for shinzo abe in tokyo where secretary of state antony blinken paid his respects today. meanwhile, investigators are probing the motives of the suspected gunman who police say confessed it wasn't politics that drove him to target abe to kill him as japan mourns the loss of a long time leader mounting questions around the shocking death of shinzo abe. overnight, abe's body arriving at a tokyo temple, the site of a private wake for the former prime minister u.s. secretary of state antony blinken making his way to japan sharing condolences from president biden. >> i shared with our japanese colleagues the sense of loss, the sense of shock that we all feel, the american people feel at this horrific tragedy and killing. >> reporter: japanese authorities are now facing a complex murder investigation as they piece together the shooter's plan of attack

over the weekend, the 41-year-old suspect was transferred from a local jail to a prosecutor's office. police say he confessed to killing abe and that he believed the former prime minister was tied to a religious group that he said his mother obsessed over, which eventually caused her financial stress several japanese media outlets report that yamagami said he planned to make explosives for the attack, but switched to homemade guns instead. investigators seizing multiple weapons during a raid on his home still, in the wake of tragedy, japanese voters heading to the polls in an election that abe was campaigning for when he was shot leaders holding a moment of silence before announcing results. a major victory for abe's party, which earned a super majority in parliament, results analysts say are likely bolstered by the news

of his death, a grieving country now seeking answers. police investigating the assassination have declined to name the religious group the suspect thought abe was linked to and allegedly caused his mother's financial ruin. officials from a group widely known as the unification church, which is rooted in south korea told japanese media the suspect's mother is a member police are also looking into their own security failures to figure out why the gunman wasn't tackled after the first shot allowing him that second shot that ultimately killed shinzo abe. savannah. >> so many questions there, janis, thank you very much. now to the big story on the business pages the very expensive showdown between the richest man in the world and one of the most popular social media platforms. >> back in april, tesla and elon musk agreed to buy twitter for a whopping $44 billion, but friday he said the deal is dead twitter's stock price plummeted, but it may not be that easy for him to walk away nbc's stephanie gosk is here to

explain. three months ago the guy says yes, i want to buy, and now he says not anymore. >> who among us hasn't wanted to return something from time to time. >> $44 billion so his lawyer wrote a letter to the s.e.c., said he's walking away and the reason is they say because of bots or fake accounts they wanted twitter to tell them how many fake accounts there were twitter said 5% of their accounts were fake, and elon musk said, no, the number is a lot higher than that, and why does that matter because real accounts are real money for advertisers. advertisers want eyeballs. >> that's how you make a buck on twitter through advertising. >> yep. >> so how could this play out? i mean, it seems like it's going to court. >> yeah, well, twitter's the no going to be like okay, fine. he's taking them to court and they're going to fight over it

the water coming, lapping up against it >> ocean yeah, yeah. >> the beach, got it let's get to your headlines, 7:30 president biden will host an event at the white house later this morning to tout the first major federal gun safety bill in three decades. he signed it into law in june. the bipartisan bill came together weeks after mass shootings in uvalde, texas, and buffalo, new york. the law includes provisions to help keep guns out of the hands of those deemed to be a danger to themselves or others. the president will be joined by survivors and family members of victims from columbine, sandy hook, parkland, uvalde, highland park and others. frightening moments for passengers on board a spirit airlines flight after it landed in atlanta, yesterday. so keep your eye on the bottom of your screen you can see huge flames shooting out from underneath the wing officials say the fire was caused by one of the plane's upon landing emergency responders did put the fire out eventually. the aircraft was towed to the gate passengers safely deplaned and

nobody was hurt. now to absolutely stunning video that's blowing up the internet take a look at this. we want to mention right off the top, the person who took this video is okay. a group of ten hikers were in the mountains of kyrgyzstan, northeast of afghanistan one of them became separated from the group when he noticed an avalanche of snow and ice barrelling down the mountain he knew he had a place to take shelter close by so he decided to stay and recorded the whole thing. >> oh, god, oh, dear god >> at the last moment, the hiker took shelter behind a wall of rocks, you see right here as the avalanche rolled over him. he says he ended up with a light layer of snow on top of him, but otherwise he made it out without a scratch. none of the other hikers was seriously injured. i think i would have been part of the party that took off running.

attacks, if not three in one week it's the dawn of a new day off the coast of long island where a string of recent shark attacks has led to stepped up patrols leaving beachgoers shaken and lifeguards injured >> i'm treading water and all of a sudden i feel this sharp pain and pressure into my hand. >> reporter: zack gallow was ironically rehearsing a rescue playing a victim some 30 yards offshore at smith point when he was bitten a very similar scenario to what happened to lifeguard john mullins only days later on fire island. >> it kind of felt like the teeth were inside my skin, and when i pulled my foot out, it kind of just felt like a scrape, a rake going up my foot. >> reporter: the recent encountered with the feared predators paired with another

possible instance near jones beach have caused officials to crank up oversight using drones and choppers in an attempt to spot sharks. the u.s. led the world in shark attacks in 2021 with 47. that's up 42% from the year before florida, which leads the list by far just saw a trio of attacks in the last couple of weeks, two that could have been deadly. addison bethea was attacked by a nine-foot shark at keaton beach near tallahassee while on vacation with her family the 17-year-old had a part of her leg amputated, but days ago she bravely took her first steps posting on the facebook page, fight like addison with a go fund me that's already raised almost $70,000 for her medical expenses lindsey bruns is also recovering. >> we're out at sawyer key with a both, my wife got bit by a shark. >> reporter: her husband frantically calling 911 after this attack in the florida keys. the couples' two daughters pictured here 30 minutes before had just climbed the ladder back onto their boat. luke hoisted his wife on board and tied a tourniquet on her leg. >> are you bringing her? >> i guess so. >> drive her in, tell me the closest spot, i'll have an ambulance waiting for you. >> incredibly lindsey survived, released from the hospital days ago. >> and sam this rise in shark attacks makes a lot of people uneasy, maybe scared to go in the water. what are the red flags you should watch out for if you're going to the beach >> yeah, savannah, certainly it

nbc's miguel almaguer is there on the front lines with the latest. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning, the southern entrance, the main entrance to yosemite national park is just down the road behind me about a mile from where we're standing. there's an active firefight underway. as you mentioned, there is a massive fight underway to protect the sequoia trees inside yosemite national park. there's about 500 trees inside the mariposa grove, an iconic area of yosemite national park and another 100 trees outside of it, but fire is sweeping through this area. so far there's more than 500 firefighters on the ground in a massive aerial assault trying to beat back the flames from these historic trees. as you mentioned, the trees can be up to 3,000 years old and hundreds of feet tall. they are a landmark across this nation. crews doing all they can to protect them. right now not a single sequoia has been lost in yosemite national park, which is quite a feat on its own.

stuff happens until it happened to me. >> reporter: in florida, a similar story, sean watson was stunned to see what popped up on his report after applying for a factory job making cinder blocks >> some burglary, never had a burglary charge in my life. >> they're far from the only ones fighting to clear their names. federal data shows nearly 6,000 consumer complaints in the last five years against companies for selling inaccurate information, a potential violation of fair reporting laws consumers reported losing jobs, apartments, some even lost government benefits. >> some of these firms are out of control and need to be held accountable when they're breaking the law. >> reporter: rohit chopra says he's been battling bad data for years. during his time leading the ftc his office fined companies showing a pattern of problems. >> a pretty big uptick in the complaints we've been getting. >> reporter: now head of the consumer financial protection bureau, chopra says screening companies have grown too reliant on computer algorithms causing

them to make obvious mistakes. these companies accountable? >> one of the first things i did is issue an order to say that this practice called name only matching was banned. >> reporter: enacted in november, consumer advocates say it's too soon to tell if the policy change will improve accuracy, but there are steps you can take to protect your reputation when applying for an apartment or a job, always a fsk yorour background report. companies who sell your background check are required to give you a copy and correct mistakes if they don't, file a complaint with the cfpb or better business bureau they'll help pressure the company to fix errors. >> they called me back and said their mistake and gave me my start date. >> reporter: fortunately, sean's persistence convinced his boss to hold the job while he disputed the discrepancies. >> when it affects your livelihood and way of living, you basically stay on top of it. >> reporter: correcting your past to protect your future. now, the trade association that

represents these background screening companies says they do work diligently to accurately represent the information in their reports, but they pointed out that courts often redact personal information which can make it tricky to link the criminal charges to the correct person hoda >> so random, just imagine that happening to you okay, so let's pretend it does happen to you. how long does it take to get one of these mistakes fixed. >> reporter: well, hoda, generally these companies have 30 days to investigate and respond to a complaint, but as you just saw in our story with jessica and sean, that doesn't always happen, which is why we are seeing more consumers filing these complaints do that, file a complaint with the consumer financial protection bureau if this happens to you, and also in some cases they're filing lawsuits as well guys. >> that will get their attention. vicky, thank you, good morning. >> let's get a check of the weather from al. >> as we take a look, we'll see some severe weather firing up in

little kids, whether you have a different clash, you have a best friend that's your homey, and all of a sudden they move across town or they're not in your home room anymore and you think how do i make a new friend? >> i think actually we all go through this so many times in our lives. in this case for buddy, his best buddy has moved across town. we start the book and he's actually feeling sad he's looking out the window, he sees the moving truck moving away and of course his parents comfort him and say your best buddy is just a car ride away. we can have a play date anytime, which is okay, but that doesn't really solve the problem for him because he has all these rituals and routines that he does with his best buddy at school his older sister lady steps in. >> lady to the rescue. >> lady to the rescue. >> i love how buddy and lady get along so well, side note, do your kids get along as well as buddy and lady do? >> yes, for now. they're 15 and 13. >> okay, mine do not, they'd be like you're a dumb dumb and that would be the end of it they're in a different phase of life.

>> it depends on the day, it's not all perfect, but our two, lucy's now 15, george is 13, which is hard to believe but they really are buddies and so i do look at this brother, sister relationship as pretty special. lady comes into the picture, and she has, you know, a great idea of finding a new friend. all you do is you need to find something you have in common. >> so he finds a friend. i really love that the friend he finds is a girl. this is interesting because there's a back story you and willie first became friends in sixth grade home room. >> this is true. >> so is this kind of inspired by the willie and christina friendship that turned into a love story >> i didn't see it that way, but now that you go that deep, savannah, who knows? >> i'm going deep, yes. >> maybe subconsciously it's there. willie and i met on the first day of school in sixth grade we had two middle schools in our town in ridgewood, new jersey, and willie had moved all the way across town and he was new at the middle school so none of his elementary school classmates were there, and on the first day of school, our home room teacher

said if you went to this elementary school, stand here, stand here, stand here, and willie didn't go to any of those so he was standing alone that's actually my first memory of him is this really tall kid standing alone and kind of all the attention turning to him, which is sort of how he is today. >> it is, he's still really tall and we pay a lot of attention to everything he says it's really cute so back to the story, buddy makes his friend sonny, the illustrations are so darling i'm in love with sonny she's inspired by a little girl you know. >> yes, yes, so i knew that buddy's new buddy was a girl i had an image of her in my mind as i was writing the manuscript. usually i hand off the min ewe script to tim bowers who i've now worked with for all three. >> the illustrator. >> i had an image of sonny in my mind it's darby our very close friend who we've known since before she was born. darby lamb who lives in new york city
