that means it's below 50. a measure of the particulate matter from the smoke in the air. much of that smoke is blowing further to the east, but also over the next several hours this will be blowing toward south lake tahoe so we will continue to see smoky conditions over the sierra as the fire continues. and also temperatures near the washburn fire and yosemite, it will still be hot picks starting with temperatures in the mid-70s and also a very light wind but it's very dry and temperatures will be cranking up once again. we will continue to monitor those conditions and slightly cooler air for the bay area and the forecast coming up in a few minutes. extremist is on the capital will be the focus of today's january 6th committee hearing in washington. want to give you a live look at the capitol. this is where it will all happen for you. this is where lawmakers will

suppliers are looking at the tough realities that we are faced with right now. >> reporter: good morning. take valley water which supplies water for hundreds of thousands of people in the south bay. they will report that between june of last year and may of this year customers used 3% less water compared to 2019 which is a good trend during the drought but still short of the 15% goal established by the board of directors. a lot of work needs to be done there. we know other agencies are facing similar issues. the valley board will meet at 1:00 today. east bay m.u.d. will meet at 1:15. we don't see anything on that agenda about the job. san francisco puc will meet at 1:30. all meetings will be in person and virtual. this is the latest map from the drop monitor from last thursday. you can see the entire bay area is classified as in a severe

drought. head east, much of the central valley is in an extreme or exceptional drought. we can expect more restaurants to do this. look at this. this is bill's cafi which has a sign on the door letting customers know that in order to conserve we will be serving water only per request. we know restaurants have been doing this on and off during the drought over the past several years. north of san jose on the peninsula, the city of palo alto is it losing a local rancher stealing water and sticking ratepayers with the bill. the city said the pagemill pastures are page mill road to the former tesla headquarters has been pulling water from a hydrant, possibly for decades. the boarding stable is allowed to use the water from the hydrant come up but it's not free water. >> it is unlawful for folks to use water from the fire hydrant, however folks are supposed to rent a hydrant

this is today in the bay streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online . thank you for joining us on this tuesday morning. i'm kris sanchez >> i'm marcus washington. we went to get a look at things and how they are working for us this morning. many people this morning are looking at this and talking about this. firefighters are making headway on that large wildfire burning in yosemite. containment as of late last night was at 25% and that is thanks in part to that mild condition from yesterday including almost no wind. and a parks spokesperson said the fire is no longer an immediate threat to mariposa grove come home to some of the world's oldest sequoias. firefighters there are hopeful they can make headway. >> meteorologist kari hall is tracking air-quality conditions and it sounds like there is a change coming in wind direction . >> that will help. our wind is coming off the ocean

bringing in better air quality for the bay area today. as we take a look at these measurements of particulate matter and how much of that wildfire smoke is moving into the bay area when it is below 50 that is good air-quality. we can see all the red and purple spreading toward south lake tahoe staying in the immediate area of the washburn fire and we will still see a lot of smoke coming up into the atmosphere but once again blowing away from the bay area. slightly cooler temperatures today. how's it looking into fremont? >> the keyme direction typically comes out of the tri- valley into fremont but we are looking at the opposite direction because that's where there are some issues. we told you about the possible bedframe on 680 near mission. no traffic issues reported. the arrow is around scott creek where there are reports of a minor crash and there could be a bumper in the lane and a car in the center divide. both north 680 into fremont out of milpitas. north sioux san

jose we have some break tapping. that could be an early start. we will track this back to you. today a call from our urgent response to america's monkeypox outbreak as the rate of infections continues to grow statewide. ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco. some say there is not as much urgency on this because only certain communities are at risk right now. what do you know? >> reporter: well, regardless of certain communities being more at risk, california has one of the highest monkeypox totals and the country according to the cdc. there are 148 cases currently statewide and you can see from these totals that california is second to new york which has 156

cases. there are 866 confirmed cases in the country. later today at the san francisco supervisor raphael mendome and and other leaders are calling on the cdc and state department of health to lead a more aggressive vaccination campaign for at risk populations. so far monkeypox has does proportional effect did min. last week leaders called the federal government response a public health failure or not ordering enough vaccines for what they say is a foreseeable dr. david chin- hong points out monkeypox is different from other diseases and cobit and has a low mortality rate in developed countries and there are tools available to prevent infection and there are safe and effective therapies to treat even severe disease. >> there is a sense of urgency and the general population but it's completely different disease altogether but i do think there is work that needs to be done before we feel better in terms of getting

control of it. >> >> reporter: it is worth mentioning that monkeypox vaccines are being given up you must schedule an appointment at according to the san francisco department of health, more than 600 san franciscans have been vaccinated due to close contact. that's what we know so far. back to you. 5:35. we want to talk about the housing crisis. many people are diving deeper into home prices as many struggle to make it in the bay. the cost of a home rebounding in downtown san francisco but in other parts of the area real estate prices are struggling to recover. i spoke with jeff tucker comet sr. economist from zillow to find out more. >> the san francisco bay area is extraordinary nationwide for a few reasons. is the most expensive major metro area in the country and

it also has a dynamic in the pandemic where it was the best example we saw in eddie's city of what some folks have called the doughnut effect of the center of the city having really weak housing demand and even falling or flatlining prices. that extends to neighborhoods in san francisco, led by the tenderloin where prices are still down a little bit. and i think it's because san francisco is the epicenter of remote work and tech employers letting folks go away. and it's a place where it was very expensive to be close to those downtown offices so a lot of people had a chance to work remotely. they moved further out. maybe they never move to the bay area in the first place and that's why out of really anywhere in the country come in central san francisco is unique as a place where home prices have not exact he skyrocketed and in a couple cases are still pretty much flat or down a

little bit. >> and you were saying people working remotely. we saw a lot of people leaving the city to go to more suburban areas and housing demand remains high while the inventory is low in the bay area but you are finding say we could see a slight change. talk to me about that. >> yeah. this is an absolute inflection point that the market is going through right now and maybe has already gone through just in the last couple of months where demand is pulling back in the face of those high prices and extraordinarily higher interest rates on mortgages then we had even just six months ago. putting those changes together, is he the typical mortgage payment on a home in the bay area over $8000. that's off the charts. that's extraordinary. a lot of people can't afford to pay that so they are pulling back. and one of the first changes we are seeing is you mentioned

inventory being superlow. it's begun to climb really rapidly. that put some actual competitive pressure between sellers now and that is what is beginning to lead to price cut, which could actually, we are seeing the earliest evidence of prices beginning to decline a little bit month over month, especially around san jose which is the epicenter of the most expensive homes. >> what about that? are we seeing more condos being built? are we talking about single- family homes here? >> this inventory increase is across the board. all these market segments are seeing that demand start to slacken so the home sellers that are out there are, you know, they can't count on getting that offer over list price in a single week anymore so that time to sell that home is taking longer and that means when the next crop of homes comes on the market a week later , they will be priced to sell. they are hoping to outcompete

los gatos reaching 87. warm and some of our valleys but it will also cool off as we had through tomorrow. we will talk more about that coming up. like you are predicting a delay for tomorrow morning. >> tomorrow and the next day there could be delays for folks traveling to and from santa cruz because tonight and tomorrow night we are doing some of enclosures between laurel, the laurel club and scotts valley in this section. they are continuing to work on this wildlife under crossing to keep them safe from highway 17. that will be the issue on highway 17. this is between 8:00 tonight and 7:00 tomorrow morning. you may be driving through that . watch for traffic updates. over here we are looking at highway 92 and highway 35. at that intersection to are from half moon bay, caltrans signs are lit up i don't have much more information other than that will be construction work near the skyline so watch for that. meanwhile the rest of the bay is moving smoothly.

5:43 as you are heading out vallejo we have a lot of clouds and temperatures in the upper 50s it's a typical start to the day. we will see slightly cooler temperatures this afternoon with the breezy wind and a cooling trend while last a little while. we will talk about a warm up toward the end of the week coming up . and we have a clear view. we cannot see the whole bay bridge from emeryville but now we have a nice drive. some fog around san francisco. not a major problem. volumes building on the span but the toll plaza is clear. we will show you where the slowdowns are popping up coming up. open police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead and another in critical condition at 7:00 last night on international boulevard near 86th avenue in east oakland. neither of the rooms were found at the scene. one of the men was found nearby at macarthur boulevard after officers responded to a possible shooting.

another drove himself to the hospital but later died. investigators are trying to sort out the circumstances. the family of an oakley woman presumed dead is sharing a handwritten note that police believe may lead to finding her body. it's written by the man who police say killed alexis gabe, her ex-boyfriend. he died as authorities try to arrest him last month in seattle. the note list directions to pioneer, a remote area dixie miles east of sacramento but does not name alexis gabe specifically. authorities in amador county are looking for her remains in the area but so far they have come up with nothing. alexis gabe disappeared in january . the body of former japanese prime minister shinzo abe is being prepared for cremation after a private funeral in tokyo. crowds of bystanders yelled his name as the hearse carrying

the fda meanwhile considering whether the so-called day after pills should be sold without prescription where a woman could just buy them off the shelf emergency contraceptive pill, plan b one step is already provided without a prescription. a number of competing companies are asking the government to allow women to pick up their pills the same way. so federal agencies led by the biden white house are responding to the recent supreme court decision but there is criticism they weren't prepared well enough. it's been known for months thanks to a leak that the court was set to take away a woman's right him up at the white house only now seems to be responding to it. there's another house select committee meeting today or hearing. nbc bay area will carry that live.

we are talking about that king tides and the flood advisory that will be returning again. all these areas in green will be under those areas where we may see that coastal flooding. it will be a little higher tonight compared to last night. if you do typically see some water on the roadways because of king tides, we will see that again tonight. gravitational pull of the sun in the moon is pulling that water further inland. what's happening here is we have those extremely high tides due to the moon and the earth being at its closest point to the earth and it's really causing some minor issues for us, even as these guys are dry. we see these clouds roaming by looking live in dublin this morning. we are starting with low clouds that it will be clearing out between 8:00 and 9:00. temperatures will stay on the mild side reaching into the upper 70s by early afternoon.

only reaching 82 today so we do have slightly cooler temperatures for the valleys thanks to that coaching breeze. we see the same tomorrow but thursday is when it starts to head back up if you're inland. if you're tired of the heat, we will see more of that coming in by the end of the week. as we look at san jose, much of a change but it will be cooler by the middle of next week. inland temperatures remain in the mid to upper 80s while san francisco will continue to see highs in the upper 60s. and mike, you are looking at san jose. >> early slowing so i was concerned but in the last couple minutes we've seen things thin out. an early start and that's just the case. an early start for san jose. the speed sensors are showing some build where the camera is around 680. things are starting to thin out toward oakland road. that's a traditional pattern. just a couple minutes earlier and it doesn't look like it will be any longer lasting. at fremont, that earlier bedframe we talked about, it

we're knowing the next major wildfire could be around the corner and a stanford study said were not ready to deal with the smoke from that fire and the study looked at how we are asked to protect ourselves from the hayes and that comes with those massive fires. it found that your safety is likely link to your economic status. i spoke with sam heft-neal who helped author the study to find out more. >> one of the main pollution problems with wildfires and wildfires are fundamentally different from other types of pollution because they are much more difficult to stop at the source. and so because of that the main policy resource instead of stopping the pollution is to tell people you should protect yourself. so the main recommendations have been to stay inside and by yourself and air purifier if you can and so we looked at indoor air quality monitors across the western u.s. and what we found was in many homes

the indoor air quality during wildfires reaches very unhealthy levels and we were surprised especially because our sample is people who purchase air quality monitors said they presumably care a lot about the air quality and are watching the situation closely. even among this group the air quality is often very unhealthy during buyers. >> for people in the near-term, what can you do to try to protect yourself and other programs available to help if you don't have the means to do that? >> yes. there are certain programs like the bay area air quality district has programs where they will lend out air purifiers to low income residents who can't afford them. i think those programs need to be held up so they are more widely available. the most effective way to protect yourself if you can is to stay inside and avoid the wildfire smoke. keep your windows and doors closed and run and air purifier to maintain indoor air quality. >> i spoke with sam about moore including what you can do to
