this is today in the bay streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and on fox. it is monday morning and hope you're coming off a great weekend, thank you for starting your day with us i'm laura garcia. >> i'm scott mcgrew henefer marcus washington, let's start with a look at the forecast and high temperatures. >> we have been seeing stories about record heat in italy and all the things going on and it has been hot here as well. especially inland areas. as we take a live look outside at san jose, we see temperatures right now in the low 60s. we will also see a warming up again today at about 76 of course whatever outdoor activities you have try to get it in early before we had to this 93 in livermore, a high of 86 in martinez and in santa rosa. san francisco will be the mid-

60s that i will talk about the rest of the week coming up, mike ewart tracking a small roadside fire in san jose. >> the fire was near the offer of 680 and not affecting the freeway and in fact no roads reported blocked anywhere. san jose fire knows about it and we do as well, and is slowing here on capitol expressway further south. neither one of those two incidents are affecting traffic flow. it was from the crew in the area, but in this area here, i want to head back to laura because or something going on with the water supply. in fact take a look at this where there is a live look at san jose and work crews on the scene at a water main break, and a small sinkhole developed along columbine drive and martin avenue near clayton road. crews have been out there since midnight working on the repairs, we are working to learn what may have led up to it and the potential impact on the neighborhood's water supply as you see, part of the road to

shut down. a deadly overnight hit and run in the east bay is under investigation that happened around 10:00 last night in oakland along bancroft avenue between 62nd and 63rd avenue. officers say that a man was hit and killed, and right now police have shut down parts of bancroft avenue due to that investigation. they are still searching for the driver involved, so far no suspect vehicle information is been released. despite covid cases surging in the bay area, and across much of the state, bart is dropping its mask mandate starting today they made this decision back in the spring to extend its mask mandate until july 18th, which is today. at the time the board pointed to safety concerns for immunocompromised writers, back then children under five cannot be vaccinated. the latest covid surges fueled by the highly contagious ba- five strain.

many health leaders are raising concerns over the monkeypox outbreak, a live look at san francisco where the city supervisor plans to hold a monkeypox day of action today calling for the department of health and human services to increase the vaccine supply. today's event comes at this it is expected to receive 4100 doses this week from the federal government. however, san francisco will have 35,000 shots, as of friday health leaders say their 86 confirmed and probable cases of monkeypox in the city. a northbay man is recovering from a double dose of misery as he tested positive for covid, been diagnosed with monkeypox at the same time. today we have the story you will only see on nbc bay area. >> reporter: i think the covid was first which is what made it weird because i did not realize i had monkeypox until i started breaking out. >> shortly after he tested positive for covid come at the end of june, he was feeling wiped out, he noticed the red lesions on his back, legs, arms

and his neck. >> the doctor was very certain that i have monkeypox him and that i had both, because that was the question. could i get them at the same time and he was like yes. >> he said that one-two punch of covid and monkeypox viruses led to weeks of misery he said he felt like he had a horrible flu, he had trouble breathing, fever, chills, body aches and skin lesions. >> i was really sick and the worst of it honestly was where i could barely get out of bed and you could barely get a drink of water. >> the professor of medicine and infectious disease specialist at stanford says while it is rare, it is possible for someone to get both monkeypox and covid at the >> it is not impossible for that to occur, it is incredibly bad luck, but they are very different viruses. >> he said covid is much more

to get the latest in one place. the trial on the high- profile murder of kristin smart officially begins today, 26 years after she was last seen alive. last week jury selection ended in the case of the 19-year-old cal poly student who vanished from san luis obispo in 1996. 34-year-old paul florez is accused of killing smart and his father ruben is charged as an accessory. the two were arrested after a search of ruben's home last year. pretrial hearings began in san luis obispo county, but the case was moved to monterey county after florez lawyer successfully argued he would not get a fair trial. two people were killed in a plane crash in napa county at the lake berryessa estates area yesterday morning. a spark of brushfire and firefighters put it out after it burned about an acre, the faa and ntsb were leading an investigation up to the crash. ahead on today in the bay, a new feature apple is adding

good monday morning to you, your monday forecast with a live look at walnut creek. >> we were talking about how warm it was in some places this weekend. >> complaining. >> it depends on where you are though because in san francisco it stayed in the 60s along the coastline, and as you make your way inland it is in the 90s, that will not change. let's get a look at what's going on here with all of the microclimates. look at this beautiful shot in san francisco, i love this, this is from our tower cam. we have it tilted down and zoomed in a little. we will see at least clear visibility for the start of our monday morning. this is where we keep the cool

weather. look at half moon bay, we start out with fog and temperatures in the mid-50s, at 2:00 only 61, and we will say into the low 60s into today. then we will see the low 70s and for oakland, not bad with comfortable and concord headed towards 92. such a big difference in temperatures over a short distance. we will see this continue for the next few days come anywhere from 95 in fairfield, 262 for a high at half moon bay. mostly low to mid 80s for the north bay. once again on wednesday we are repeating this weather pattern, with fog near the coast, and hot temperatures inland but we're not the only ones seeing the high heat in the valleys and inland areas. take a look at how hot it is today with bismarck, north dakota a high of 100, minneapolis reaching 98. and that heat expands all the way to the south. as we see this extreme heat in this strong area of high pressure is very slowly moving.

we will see had basically be replaced by another area of high pressure going into next week. take a look at concord. we go from low 90s through much of the week to upper 80s, and not a significant cooldown here, maybe five degrees over the course of a week. mike, you are tracking the movement of the bay bridge. >> that is right kari, now this lower deck, out of san francisco was the concern, and as you're getting onto the bridge, on the lower deck itself, there is a disabled vehicle and other issues have both just reportedly cleared. chp has this one disabled vehicle reported as far as active incident going on on the lower deck, but no slowing so everything should be fine. this is your push, as you know that is your main commute direction from even over here antioch is no problem, and the

longer drive out of the hills and similar drive out of the north bay at the altamont pass a little bit of slowing as you typically start your day and the south they looks great and the same thing for the peninsula. back to you. thank you. we track the latest about was about a mall shooting that happened just outside of indianapolis four people are dead, including the gunmen come after police say that a man walked into the mall and started shooting in greenwood. two others were hurt. police said that a good samaritan shot and killed the suspect. according to officers the gunman was armed with a rifle in several magazines of ammunition, so far a motive is unclear what the today show will have much more on the investigation now underway coming up at 7:00 right after today in the bay. family is outraged and demanding answers is a claim that a lodi funeral home throughout the remains of their dollar. emiliano rose navarro was stillborn last month, the parents believe her remains were thrown away earlier this month and i just found out about it the couple filed a police report saying they want the funeral home to be held

accountable. >> i just want her. as a mom you want to protect them, all of your kids, and this was my first daughter. i cannot have her alive now and i could not have her whole. >> the funeral home is working with the police and while it would not answer any specific questions it said quote jerky memorial is aware of a situation that has arisen with the grieving family we are currently serving. we are working closely with the family to investigate and resolve the issue quickly. now to a live look at capitol hill. this week the committee investigating the january 6th insurrection will hold another hearing set for thursday this next hearing is expected to focus on text messages from january 5th and january 6th erased by the secret service. new witnesses are also expected to testify. last week the panel issued a

subpoena to the secret service, after a homeland security department official briefed committee members about deleted text. and bay area congresswoman, a member of the committee, says she expects those documents very soon. >> we need them and expect to get them by this tuesday so we will see. i was shocked to hear they did not back up their data before the reset their iphones which is crazy and i don't know why that would be. we need to get this information to get the full picture. >> a spokesperson for the secret service has called allegations that the agency intentionally deleted messages categorically false. and agency claims some phone data was lost during a preplanned system migration. will have live coverage of this hearing thursday afternoon at 5:00, right here on nbc bay area. and you can stream it on our nbc bay area app.

the park is quite literally rising from the ashes, this friday big basin state park will partially reopen as it has been closed since the complex fire stop in august 2020. you may recall that flames tore through 97% of the park and look at all the damage it did to all of the old rustic trees this week 18 miles of trails and roads will reopen including across the redwood trail loop and that includes some of the park's biggest and oldest redwoods. the historic village and visitor center was completely destroyed and you can see it here in this video did a temporary visitor center will also reopen on friday. today a grand opening celebration continues at san francisco's new presidio tunnel tops park but the much anticipated park opened with big crowds of the weekend and the new 14 acre park has playgrounds and picnic spots, educational areas, food trucks and really great views. the $118 million project took eight years to complete. demonstrations are planned at the port of oakland the next few days and heavy traffic is expected through wednesday

new this morning, u.s. drivers have lost roughly $8 billion to red lights. >> impact americans spent 6.8% of each trip at red lights, and specifically in california drivers spent 17.3 seconds idling at each signal. that is a total 2.7 million hours sitting at red lights. idling for more than 10 seconds burns more fuel and produces more co2 than shutting off and restarting your engine. now one company is using artificial intelligence to manage traffic signals to reduce the time drivers spent idling at red lights, cutting emissions and saving money. >> we want to participate in their drive and look at how i can game the system and what can i take for other routes? we have seen that has provided
