we see the spread and temperatures continually. we will talk more about that in the forecast coming up. thank you. right now in san jose, crews trying to stop precious water from wasting away after a water main break. >> we are live on the scene were a sinkhole opened up, how big is it out there chris? >> reporter: what a way to start the morning, a sinkhole opened up after a water main broke and we will show you those screws hard at work trying to stop the water but the flow has stopped partially and we did see one of the big trucks drive off, perhaps things are getting a little bit better, but we know with the sinkhole opened up that they will be out here trying to repair that for a while. we were talking about traffic impact but this is a residential area that we are at columbine and martin. you might have to veer in a different direction. if you live in this neighborhood that is but if you're passing by the

neighborhood it should not impact you that much. i had an easy time getting here, but we know work crews are still hard at work but a rough way to start this monday morning, and the water service likely turn off to many of these homes. will ask more questions and bring more information this next half hour. back to you. >> for all of the latest details, live on the scene kris sanchez. developing now, police are still searching for suspect on a daily shooting inside a livermore bowling alley on saturday night at granada bowl. we say that a fight broke out between a group of individuals that knew each other and officers say that one of them ended up taking out a gun and opening fire. one man was shot and killed, two others were struck. the victim, who was killed, started by his 20-year-old antonio de vargas, and left by family and friends held a memorial in his honor. antonio's father said his son's friend was shot that night but he is recovering at the

enforcement criticizing their inaction, is 19 students and two teachers were killed. the scathing report finds systemic failures and by agencies responding to the mass shooting at robb elementary school, saying they failed to prioritize saving the lives of innocent victims over their own safety. >> several officers in the hallway or that building new, or should have known, there was dying in that classroom. >> the investigating committee found 376 law enforcement were on the scene, most from state and federal agencies, five were uvalde's school police officers . the video shows that some of gunman opened fire. >> he is shooting in my room and they run back this way. i could not run, why should they run? >> heavily armed officer stood in the hallway for more than one hour.

south bay. a man accused of shooting a mountain view police officer is in jail. police say jeffrey choy shot an on saturday. the department released this new body cam video showing jeffrey choy being stopped during a dui patrol. moments later he shot at the officer and then he rolled off the crashed investigators worked with several bay area oy in union city and after chasing them on foot, officers arrested him in nearby fremont. >> is the one call you never want to get as the chief and it is the one call that springs you out of bed and immediately activates everybody in the department, every resource, all hands on deck. >> the good news here is the officer that was shot is now out of the hospital and recovering at home. 5:07 monday morning and encouraging news from the fire lives in yosemite. people that live in will loan a, the community outside of yosemite, are back home. they have been evacuated nearly

two weeks since the washburn fire broke out in flames have burned almost 4900 acres. containment is at 51%. and the home of the famed giant sequoia's, those seem to be safe in the cause of the fire still under investigation but park rangers believe it was started by humans. >> and the fire burning a pittsburgh marsh is still smoldering, contra costa county firefighters tweeting these pictures from above the marsh over the weekend. you still see the smoke from the fire and has been burning since the end of may. on friday, fireflooded out to p the fire pit they say about 20,000 gallons per minute are flowing into that marsh. >> let's turn to meteorologist kari hall and she's been tracking the conditions . >> yes those fires are very difficult to put them out and it may take months, who knows how long to put them out?

that will be an issue with air quality and we've been watching to see what is going on with washburn fire near yosemite and it is good they are getting more containment. it will be another really hot day and temperatures are in the low 70s, timidity is fairly high, then we will see it heading up towards 97 degrees in that area today, and humidity dropping to about 19%. then we look at the smoke that has for the most part been blowing to the east and away from the bay area. we also have the riosa fire that started a few days ago which is also blowing towards south lake tahoe. and for the marsh fire we are seeing unhealthy air quality around antioch and pittsburgh, and we will continue to see that for today and to most likely the next several days. mike, you have been looking to see where we can find lower gas prices. >> kari we look around everyday to find cheapest prices, we found gas for $5.77 in san mateo, and cheaper in oakley at that portion of the east bay you can fill up at five cheaper

lunch time. it will be another warm afternoon and will check out all the microclimates in the forecast coming up. >> i'm talking the rose. a little bit of a volume increase this last few minutes headed south towards lincoln and no major problems headed down towards san francisco. starting around the world and here in the bay area. this week the world health organization is considering declaring monkeypox a global health emergency. now we are learning local state leaders are working to increase the number of vaccines available to folks here in the bay area. i spoke in depth about this with state senator scott weiner. >> is started out but if we do not control this outbreak it will not stay among and bisexual men and it will spread to other people. the good news is unlike covid, when we do not know what that virus was we had no treatment

or vaccine. you know what this virus is and we have highly safe and effective vaccines. and had the federal government ordered enough of these vaccines in 2019 when the vaccine was approved we could've controlled this thing already. we would vaccinate everyone at risk it would be over but unfortunately it did not happen. >> and vaccinations are simple and easy thing to do. it is my understanding, for instance i am 50 for, i have a smallpox vaccine, they quit giving that in about 1972. people with a smallpox vaccine are relatively safe, is that right? >> well, i called my mother and i am 52 and i said did i get the smallpox vaccine? she dug up my baby book and send me a photo of it in 1971. i'm not a scientist, obviously always rely on the scientists, but what i read and in talking with infectious disease experts and what i've read in some of the studies done is that the

people who received the smallpox vaccine, even 50 or 60 or 70 years ago, likely have some level of residual protection against both smallpox and monkeypox. you may get the infection. but if you do you may end up with milder symptoms. >> we have done stories about this, and at times controversial. what will be done to ensure the vaccine is being distributed fairly? >> well, in 2010 experts were telling us that monkeypox was inevitably going to break out of africa, and become more in 2019, this monkeypox specific vaccine was approved by the fda, very safe and effective and few side effects. and the u.s. government

unfortunately only ordered 56,000 doses, so that is two doses per person for 28,000 people with the national vaccine stockpile. they should have ordered millions and millions. as a result we are very short on vaccines, and fda failed to inspect one of the factories, which created further delay. that is all being turned around now but we are pressuring the federal government, and nancy pelosi has been putting pressure on federal health officials. and they are developing a greater sense of urgency because it was sluggish at first. but we are seeing people waiting for eight or nine hours in line in san francisco to get a vaccine and that kind of chaos isn't acceptable. we need to really push, and hermetically expand vaccine access, particularly in the cities being hardest hit. >> i talked to senator weiner about a lot more and you can watch the full interview on nbc

now the protection of the marine layer an ocean influence bringing in this fog we are seeing over san francisco as we wake up and head out this morning, which keeps temperatures moderated. in santa rosa we are at 52 to start off the morning, but it will gradually start to warm up by late morning into the afternoon. temperatures slightly above what we typically see for this time in july, with a high of 80 in napa, reaching 92 in concord, and morgan hill and los gatos reaching about 89. over the next few days we are still looking at wide-ranging temperatures, what kind whether you experience really depends on just a few miles, and where you are in the bay area. low 60s for the hyatt half moon bay, low 70s at the interbay, and mid-90s as you go up towards fairfield and the south county. towards wednesday, once again the wide-ranging temperatures, and this is what we've been

talking about. all of this extreme heat is this large, expansive area of high pressure is causing record high temperatures. denver today headed for 101, and 108 in dallas. there is not much change in this weather pattern as we go through the week, pretty stagnant, high pressure slowly moving and in fact expected to get even hotter across some of the areas that have been dealing with high heat. as we take a look at napa, we look at mid 80s today, upper 80s for the middle of the week, and also mid-to-upper 80s for the weekend. we are seeing not much of a change across parts of the bay area where it will be hot for this part of the week. mike, you see a new issue getting into san francisco. >> yeah kari, most smooth and easy around the bay, a little build out of the ultimate pass, but we are now looking here 101 northbound around cesar chavez, reports that a roadside fire is there, trying to get details

lunch time. make plans to have lunch outside and this afternoon it warms up to the low 90s at livermore and san jose will see a high of 83, and mid 80s for much of the north bay. i'm checking all of this changes for much of the work week and mike you see a fire. spirit yes right around 101 and cesar chavez exit, roadside fire and reports that it may be involved with the building, but not quite sure, no reason for alarm, we are tracking it in the newsroom and we will you know if there any other issues going on. we are looking to the west of the bay, both the south bay and east bay, smooth and easy drive. now roadways are smooth and soft bay, but you have one that is not a freeway that is a concern. that is right, this is a live look in san jose where workers are on the scene of a water main break and a small sinkhole along columbine drive and martin avenue near clayton road. wate out there since midnight working on repairs. we're working to learn what led

up to it, and any potential impact it could have on neighborhood water supply but as you can see, part of the road to shut down. a deadly overnight hit and run in the east bay under investigation that happened just after 10:00 last night in oakland along bancroft avenue between 62nd and 63rd avenue's. officers say it was a man that was hit and killed, police have shut down parts of bancroft avenue due to the investigation. they are still searching for the driver involved, so far no suspect vehicle information is been released. despite covid cases surging in the bay area and across most of the state, bart is dropping its masked mandate starting today. they made this decision in the spring to extend its masked mandate until july 18th, today, and at that time the board pointed to safety concerns for immunocompromised writers, and back then children under five could not be vaccinated. the latest covid surge is being fueled by the highly contagious

ba-5 strain . a new website to check the level of air pollution on the street where you live. today in the bay bob wardell joins us, they found some of the dirtiest air in the bay area unfortunately located in communities of color. >> reporter: sadly you are correct, good morning to you scott. and for 95% of us in the bay area, most of us are breathing air that does not meet international standards set by the world health organization. i'm here in pleasanton and we are in the neighborhood just off stoneridge drive east of 580, were according to the air.health website where the number of particles in the air are p.m. 2.5 is above the w.h.o. guidelines of five. as we move west to west oakland, the p.m. 2.5 jumps to nine, even 12 in some places, and very industrial

areas where people live. now look at levels of nitrogen dioxide, right here in pleasanton, so pollution from things like traffic in power plants and the levels are here well within the w.h.o. guideline a 5.3, but look at west oakland, 14.3. this san francisco-based firm created this website using data collected from low emission vehicles equipped with air sensors since the start of 2020, and they have been mapping every public lock of the nine county bay area and measuring the levels of nitrogen dioxide, p.m. 2.5, 03, and co2. in conjunction with the bay area air quality management district, they found air pollution can vary by 5w8 times from one block to the next and in alameda county where i am, 40% of white people live in areas with high levels of nitrogen dioxide. but black people in alameda

of health and human services increase the vaccine supply. this comes as the city's suspected of receiving 4100 doses this week from the federal government but san francisco requested 35,000 shots. as of friday health leaders say their 86 confirmed and probable cases of monkeypox in the city. and now to a story that you only see on nbc bay area. a bay area man to speak out about his medical one-two punch. he's recovering from not only monkeypox but covid as well. miko thompson of sebastopol learned that he tested positive for coronavirus last month and he noticed then red lesions on his back, legs, arm and his neck, and the monkeypox diagnosis. he said both infections led to weeks of misery and feeling similar to a horrible flu. >> just really sick. and the worst of it was honestly where i could barely get out of bed, and you could barely get a drink of water.

home got rid of the remains of their daughter, a millie anna rose navarro was stillborn last month and they believe her remains were thrown away earlier this month and they just found out about it. the couple filed a police report saying they want the funeral home to be held accountable. >> as a mom, we want to protect them, all your kids. and this was my first daughter. and i could not have her alive, now i cannot even have her as a whole could >> the funeral home is working with lodi police and while they would not answer a specific question but in a statement they said quote jerky memorial is aware of a situation that has arisen with the grieving family where currently serving. we are working closely with the family to investigate and resolve the issue quickly. now a live look at the capital this morning, this week the committee investigating the january 6th insurrection will hold another hearing set for

thursday and this next hearing is expected to focus on text messages from january 5th and six erased by the secret service. new witnesses are also expected to testify. last week, a panel issued a subpoena to the secret service after homeland security department official briefed the committee members about deleted texts. bay area congresswoman zoe lofgren, member of the committee, says she expects the documents very soon. >> we need them and we expect to get them by this tuesday. so we will see. i was shocked to hear they did not back up their data for they reset their iphones, that is crazy and i don't know why that would be. we need to get this information to get the full picture. >> a spokesperson for the secret service has called allegations that the agency intentionally deleted messages categorically false. the agency claims that some phone data was lost during a preplanned assistant migration, and inspector general by the way, said that migration came

heiser headed back into the low 90s around concord, mid-70s and hayward, and mid-60s for the coastline and half moon bay. tomorrow more of the same with wide-ranging temperatures, it just depends on where you are in san jose 82 and if you drive down to morgan hill about 10 degrees hotter, if you are in the east bay, livermore is at 91 but look at dublin reaching 83. that is all because we are seeing the cool westerly wind and ocean breeze bringing milder temperatures, but it does not make it over all of the hills and into all the valleys we will continue to see this weather pattern, also a strong area of high pressure causing record heat across the region. we can see minneapolis today is headed for 98, 108 around dallas, and widespread triple digits all across the west as this intense heat continues. there will be very little change in the overall weather pattern through the week.

that high pressure slowly nudging off to the east, it really doesn't have too much of an impact on our weather, but will still be hot and some of our inland valleys with concord in the mid-90s much of the week. and for much of our inland temperatures, upper 80s to low 90s, even the weekend looking about the same. while san francisco will continue to see highs in the upper 60s. mike you start to see the commute building in san jose. >> right on schedule here at north 101 and the blip starts at 680 and moves up oakland road, not very dramatic and not unexpected. pretty much at speed out of stan martin, and also here on 880 south bound through hayward, the volume builds as folks come off the 580 and castro valley and it bunches up around the san mateo bridge with no problems on the spans, and highway 4 here and 37 both show build but right on schedule as well. and the bay bridge toll plaza, showing little slowing and the

this friday big basin state park will partially reopen. we know it has been close since the complex fire sparked in august 2020 and so much damage was done as flames tore through 97% of the park. but this week here is the good news, 18 miles of trails and roads will reopen print that includes the classic redwood trail loop which includes some of the park's biggest and oldest redwoods the historic village and visitor center was completely destroyed and you can see it here in this drone video overlooking some of the damage and destruction. a temporary visitors center will also open on friday. today a grand opening salvation continues at san francisco's new presidio tunnel top park. the much-anticipated park opened with big crowds over the weekend and the new 14 acre park has playgrounds, picnic spots, educational areas, food trucks, and spectacular views. the $118 million project took eight years to complete.
