looking to help those make it in the bay. >> walnut creek city hall with more on the rally. >> reporter: good morning, tonight neighbors will be rallying behind me outside of city hall in walnut creek and they will join city council taking place tonight at the regular scheduled time to pressure city leaders to save seven hills ranch. take a look at the map, it is a 30 acre open space in the hills of walnut creek near the school, the owners have sold the land of their plans to build a large retirement community, some neighbors argue the development would ruin the area and disrupt traffic and according to the website it would eradicate the natural landscape. they want walnut creek city council to take their concerns to the supervisors of contra costa county must approve the plans

in order for the project to go forward. tonight walnut creek city council could endorse a new affordable housing project at 699 ygnacio valley road. resources for community development was to build a four- story 90 unit project at the site. the unit is priced extremely low for low income households families with incomes between 20 and 60% of the area median income. city council must decide whether to issue a letter that will help the developer. live from walnut creek, "today in the bay". >> voting on affordable housing comes as home sales are dropping slightly in the bay area. according to the association of realtors prices dropped slightly in june compared to may the prices dropped by 8.1% in

make it in the bay, the city that could change rental laws, this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon tv, apple and fire tv. i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia. a start with a look at the forecast meteorologist kari hall. >> in the north bay as you get ready to head out it is a clear start with the temperature at 50 degrees, nice and comfortable a cool morning and a pleasant day was sunshine and temperatures are headed for the low to mid 80s. we are seeing a wide range of temperatures with cool coastal air and highs in the mid 60s. across the bay mid to upper 70s come down to the south bay 84 degrees reaching to the low to mid 90s for interior valleys. we will continue to see the weather pattern for the next

few days, more about that, we are looking at a major delay on the bart line. >> for the antioch with agencies working hand-in-hand the deal is between pleasant hill and concord there's a trackside grass fire so we are tracking that right now, that's all we have with the information for now. we know that there will be mutual aid offered with a bustling 14 for folks getting back onto the line after concord after the past that or over to antioch the flow of traffic on the roadways moving nicely with no disturbance on the surface streets or freeways. nice drive to the bay bridge which is empty at the toll plaza but overall no problems. the dominant strain of the covid virus is not making people as sick as other strains we have seen. hospitalizations are on the rise for certain populations. we are looking at those who are most at risk.

>> as you said, the dominant strain taking over the omicron ba.5. it has been making a lot of people sick but not sick enough to go to the hospital but the trend does seem to be changing. right now in california more than 4400 people are in hospitals compared with fewer than 1003 months ago and a far cry from the winter surge of 15,000 hospitalizations last winter and 20,000 during the first covid winter. if you are like me, you know number of people with covid who are recuperating or who recuperated at home feeling like they had a really bad cold but chances are those folks who could do that were fully vaccinated and double boosted, people ending up in the hospital are largely unvaccinated or they are not fully boosted. according to the department of public health people who are not fully vaccinated are almost 10 times more likely to be

and he knew the victims that he shot. this according to police, the memorial outside the bowling alley is growing as it reopened for the first time since the shooting with limited hours. bowlers say it is important to show support following the violence. >> everybody is always happy, never had any confrontation. a beautiful place to come. not a sign of what livermore is about. >> the other men shot are expected to survive. livermore police offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest of garcia. the bowling alley will open for regular hours tomorrow. richmond city leaders will be capping rent increases, if city leaders say yes the proposal would appear on the november ballot, if approved by voters landlords can only increase rent by 3% each year. you may recall oakland took similar action in may with renters planning to speak out

at tonight's city council meeting. independent truckers will once again be protesting a bill that would put them out of business, they will be gathering at the port of oakland again this morning, protesting started yesterday. truckers are fighting assembly bill five which they say would cripple the chaotic supply chain. the bill says that independent contractors have to adhere to new rules with business owners saying it's tough to meet those standards it takes 70,000 independent truckers off the road. >> it was well intentioned but they put thousands of dollars and time, effort and energy and families had to sacrifice for them to be small business owners. they are able to make a better living being independent contractors. >> protest are expected to last until tomorrow. one fire department in the east bay looking to beef up its

response to wildland fires, later today pleasanton city council expected to approve the purchase of three new type six extreme fire engines for the livermore pleasanton fire department at a cost of $900,000. they allow firefighters to better fight fires in areas where homes are mixed with vegetation. the new vehicles would replace the three older similar engines. crews are making progress on the washburn fire in yosemite. it is now 50% content, the fire started two weeks ago burning seven square miles as we first told you yesterday evacuation orders for those living in the area have been lifted, the fire is now burning in the sierra national forest which will be closed until next month. the fire threatening the grove of giant sequoia trees but happy to say they are now safe. meteorologist kari hall is here and the hot weather so hard on the fires. >> yes it is in the air temperature tops out in the

middle 90s but despite that they are getting the upper hand which is great news so into today from upper 60s in the area to 96 degrees with humidity dropping as well with breezy wind. thankfully we have not seen any strong wind with the air blowing out of the bay area air quality has been good. looking outside in dublin waking up to a beautiful sunrise with a few high clouds moving by and temperatures are in the lower 60s now which will gradually make it to the lower 80s by lunchtime, 80 degrees then and reaching 85 for the high. in oakland a high of 73 degrees and novato in the mid-80s, san francisco 64 and a high of 84 in san jose. more about what's to come into the weekend, more problems for bart. >> in addition to the track site a grass fire halting service between pleasant hill and concord and again there is

mutual aid. we have another issue with an equipment problem somewhere near the south hayward area so that will prevent a 20 minute delay to that area that suddenly popped up on that portion of the east bay bart line. to the roadways we are looking at the area track site fire in this stretch but not presenting an issue for the 680 nor do we hear about homes threatened we will track that but we have a new crash near walnut creek interchange opposite your commute out of lafayette over to walnut creek over to danville and then there is no real disturbance right now. your main commute is this way with no big slowing but highway 37 typical we should see the building here and the bay bridge and the metering lights turned on in the next five minutes but there is no big backup yet with no major problems. looking ahead for tonight, there will be one more of your westbound highway 24 caldecott

board meeting coming up at 7:00 right after "today in the bay". after years of questions and agony for a family the man kristin smart was lusting with and his father face trial today is day two of the trial, paul florez one of her classmates had always been a suspect but it was not until last year he was arrested on charges of drugging and killing kristin smart, the father of florez is also facing charges accuse of helping to hide the body. legal experts say that prosecutors have a little bit of an edge but there are some significant challenges. >> the strength actually goes to the prosecution right now. they have a holding, it is a circumstantial evidence case but paul flores made a lot of incriminating statements over the past 26 years as did his father. so it is a tough case for the prosecution because there is

having with autism. >> my daughter recently started eating again. she is eating fruit and some of the things she used to eat so we are so excited. cautiously optimistic because a lot of kids on the spectrum tend to have severe food in version sometimes caused by digestive issues. she has acid reflux so we are keeping it under control with medication and it is great to see her eating again. it means we are on the right track but it did take a long time, she did not eat for about eight months and was on formula basically a liquid diet. now that we see the improvements we are so excited but you know there have been so many people reaching out on social media to tell me their stories about their kids on the spectrum and issues with eating and all of it is so much appreciated. it really did help. >> time and we are so happy to

spread from lower 60s to the mid-90s for fairfield. san jose in the middle with a high of 82 and 83 in novato and then thursday still seeing mild coastal temperatures and hot in the valleys as we are stuck in this weather pattern. across the region, extreme heat especially across the south and that continues today as a large area of high pressure moves slowly. the heat is not backing off across the south some of the valley temperatures ha into next week still looking at the same going through the middle to the end of july with highs in the upper 80s and 90 degrees thursday that looks like the warmest day, a little bit less fog in san francisco making coastal areas or the inland areas heat up a little more but we're looking very nice even into the weekend. you still have delays?

>> two spots and there is a issue for san jose drivers south bay. antioch line there is a grass fire, not able to get more detail, reporting between concord and pleasant hill so 680 through the area surface streets seem fine with mutual aid from county line bus 14 that is for the antioch line which is not running now between concord and pleasant hill because of the grass fire along the track. we have an issue on the track this equipment problem yourself hayward creating a 20 minute delay, you're still getting details perhaps they will clear this quickly we hope. those are both on the bart lines. on the roadways a trackside fire somewhere in the section 680 and major surface streets moving pretty well to the area but this is the alternate to the bart line and county connection. this crash near walnut creek interchange a problem, counter

to the morning commute so we will trust everything is okay. no injuries reported with a smooth drive for the morning commute although there is slowing passing the caldecott tunnel with no problems overnight roadwork did clear an hour and a half ago. that is the only issue for contra costa county on the road. down in the south bay everything looks fine on the big view but looking at the camera north 101 starting to loosen up near me traffic is loosening up and behind me we have a crash located everything rippling back you know how that happens so the roadway may have just reopened seconds ago now we are rippling back to the backup back to the 680. getting all the way back here for the camera around oakland road that's where the crash was reported in the middle of the freeway. it looks like they did, not rippling near 280 and 87 but i believe this crash just cleared so we will check that for
