one pedestrian was killed. all lanes are back open for the morning commute. in just a few hours, the fight to save green space in the east bay is heating up as a housing project looks to help. >> today we are joined by today in the bay's bob redell . >> reporter: neighbors of the seven hills ranch will rally behind me at walnut creek city hall them they will speak and try to pressure city leaders to not back up the seven hills ranch project. seven hills ranch is a 30 acre open space in the hills of walnut creek near the seven hills school.

they would like to create a retirement community. some neighbors say it would ruin the area . according to the website it would eradicate the national landscape and they want the city council to take their concerns to the supervisors of contra costa county, who must approve the plan. tonight the walnut creek city council could endorse a new affordable housing projects and a resource for community development wanting to build a project at the site. the units would be priced for extremely low income households. the city council must decide whether or not to issue a letter to help them to get funding. bob redell , "today in the bay" . >> thank you so much, bob. home sales are dropping

slightly in the bay area . home sale prices dipped in june. in june, the prices dropped by 8.1% in alameda and 6% in san francisco and santa clara and 5% in contra costa. prices dropped in all of the bay area nine counties except solano county. in berkeley, police are searching for a suspect involved in a hate crime where there was edged into cars over the weekend swastikas . police are investigating if the cars were targeted or if it was random. today is the deadline for the secret service to hand over deleted text messages from the january 6 capitol seige . the messages could be a crucial

to find out if we should be alarmed. >> we should not be alarmed in general. at the end of the day, we should not ignore covid-19 but we are very protected in the bay area with high vaccine rates and booster rates in all age groups. there is still individuals who are not as well projected protected. those are those who should be worried. these are people who have not gotten vaccinated. this variant can be very serious. >> so would the second booster available for those 50 and over , would it take care of this ba.5 variant ? >> we do not have any fears at this point that it is going to

work any differently with ba.5 , if you are protected with immunizations. that is because even though the antibodies do not recognize ba.5 so well, what has worked so hard and you have reminded the immune system about the virus , that will keep it out if it enters. >> that is what we want. a lot of people we know it seems like they have gotten covid-19 at this point. but if i had covid-19 one month ago , am i really immune? >> it is not the case with ba.5 . in the old days you got something and you kind of have a

's 30. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez let's take a look at the forecast and get you out the door on this tuesday morning. meteorologist kari hall tracking what we can expect. >> basically a repeat of yesterday. if you're heading out the door in antioch, it's a cool start but it will heat up quickly. take a look at our trend. for the drive to work we are in the mid to upper 60s but it goes to read as we see temperatures heating into the early afternoon into the upper 80s eventually reaching the low 90s. livermore seeing a high of 93 while san jose or reaching to the mid-80s. we stay comfortable in san mateo at 7186 in santa rosa. san francisco not making it out of the 60s. we'll talk more about this coming up. and mike you have been tracking a big issue for b.a.r.t.

>> i learned from the fire department this will not be a recovery soon. the antioch line is stopped between concord and pleasant hill. there is a trackside fire. they've cut power to the b.a.r.t. line so they can address the fire. there is a small structure involved but no residences. people are fine for what i understand as far as the people who live on 242 and the monument in san miguel area. this will be an issue for the antioch line for b.a.r.t. coming to the area for 45 minutes or an area. a mutual aid from county connection roadways are moving smoothly. appear it's in the south bay where this crash on north 101 are on oakland road blocks the slow lane. slow on one-to-one but it looks like it's recovering. the dominant covid virus isn't making people as sick as other strains through the pandemic but hospitalization are on the rise for certain populations. >> let's check in with kris sanchez who will tell us who is most at risk.

>> reporter: that dominant strain is the ba.5 and it's making a lot of people sick though not sick enough to go to the hospital, and that seems to be changing. in california more than 4400 people are in the hospital compared with fewer than 1003 months ago. still a far cry from last the winters surge of 3000 hospitalizations and 20,000 during the first covid winter but people are still getting it. if you like me you know a number of people with covid were able to recuperate at home being like maybe they have a bad cold or the flu. chances are those folks are lucky because they are fully vaxxed and double boosted that people who end up in the hospital are largely unvaccinated or on boosted. according to the california department of public health, people not fully vaccinated almost 10 times more likely to be hospitalized. you may be setting, you've been reporting that omicron ba.5 does not respond to the current

officers are looking for this man come roger garcia come in here is a convicted felon with a violent history and he knew the victims he shot saturday night. the memorial outside the bowling alley continues to grow as it reopened for the first time since the shooting yesterday with limited hours bowlers we spoke to said it's important to show support following the violence. >> everyone is happy and we have a good time. never any confrontations here and it's a beautiful spot to come. it's not a sign of what livermore is about at all. it's kind of like a fluke. >> the two men are expected to survive, the other men shot. livermore police are offering a reward for information that leads to garcia's arrest. the bowling alley is planning to open for regular hours tomorrow. today, independent truckers will be protesting a bill they say will put them out of business. the truckers will gather at the port of oakland this morning. the protest started yesterday. yesterday morning. truckers are fighting assembly bill 5 which they say will

cripple the already chaotic supply chain. the bill signed in 2019 said independent contractors have to adhere to new rules. business owners say it's tough to meet those standards taking an estimated 70,000 independent truckers off the road. >> it was well-intentioned however they have put thousands of dollars and time, effort, and energy come and their families have helped sacrifice with them for them to be small business owners. be able to make a better living being independent contractors. beeman protests are expected to last until tomorrow . 6:36. one fire department of east bay looking to beef up its response to wildland fire's pick later today the pleasanton city council expected to approve the purchase of three new types six extreme fire engines for the livermore-pleasanton fire department at a cost of more than $900,000.

they allow firefighters to better fight fires and areas were homes mixed with vegetation. the new vehicles will replace departments three older, similar type vi engines . crews making progress on the washburn fire and yosemite's mariposa grove. it's 50% contained. the fire started nearly 2 weeks ago and is burned at seven square miles. evacuation orders for those living in the wawona area have been lifted. the fire is not burning in the sierra national forest which will be closed until next month peak 2 fire threatened the grove of california's giant sequoia's but we are happy to say they are now safe. >> let's bring in meteorologist kari hall. warm conditions are tough on firefighters. >> very hot with highs in the 90s and then the heat from the fires themselves. it's dangerous for firefighters. maybe they're taking advantage of these cool temperatures in the morning. right now it's in the upper 60s with humidity at 52%. through the day it will turn hot

once again and the humidity will drop to 20% which causes the fire to spread more quickly. hopefully they continue to get more containment. a look at the yosemite valley. air-quality is improving and we do see that smoke moving away from us. we are waking up to a clear sunrise. san rafael seeing temperatures in the low 50s. it will continue to be sunny and we are matching yesterday's temperatures heading back to the upper 70s and low 80s. and mike has been watching several issues on the morning commute on the roads and the rails. >> we have this issue in san jose. this is not technically an alert from chp. i'm giving you the alert for north 101 which is jammed up. most of the traffic around the be as light right now on the roads so this is a big slowdown and unexpected. we are improving speeds from red to orange closer to the

july's independent retailers a month and one group is pushing for congress to act quickly on a bill that would have an impact on small businesses across the country. the american innovation and choice online act would ban major tech firms like amazon and google from favoring their products over their competitors. the legislation what bart amazon from promoting its own private label products over rival items on its platform. however, the connected commerce counsel believes the band would have a negative impact on small businesses in rural areas because they use the same online tools to sell a majority of their products. the business is here they will face higher costs if the ban is approved. >> we surveyed rural small businesses nationwide and found that role sellers use several different sales methods to sell their products but what is interesting in this new research that we just came out with is that online sales methods are disproportionately more

able to keep it under control with some medication and she suddenly started eating again after being on formula for all that time. >> she was probably in ping. >> she was in pain and because she is nonverbal she cannot really tell us that. and we do see a lot of times come i think like 70% of children on the spectrum, have issues with digestion or acid reflux are crohn's disease and things like that. being able to share that on social media, the community gave me some great advice in the stories they've had and what they've dealt with so that helped us out along the way. i wanted to say thank you for the support. we are optimistic, cautiously, because we are once again trying to keep it under control with medication. she's doing well and every day she is trying new food. >> i can't believe she so big. i held her when she was just a little baby. >> next month she will turn 6 tech >> were all worried and she's like blueberries?

half moon bay to low 70s and san mateo. 73 and oakland while concord will see 93 degrees . 92, san martin. through the day tomorrow it's pretty much more of the same. anywhere from the 60s to the mid-90s. fairfield we head back to gate 95. no brake toward the end of the week. and we compare that to the extreme heat we've seen across the region come especially across the south where we've seen numerous high- temperature records falling and oklahoma sitting heading back to 109 degrees. as the strong area of high pressure slowly moves come it keeps us in this stagnant weather pattern. day after day we've had extreme heat across the south, west, and for us we have a little bit of a saving grace from the fog near the coastline so we state moderate with upper 80s and low

6:56. moving you forward with a look at top stories. >> following breaking news and contra costa county. a small grass fire impacting hart service. bob redell just got to the scene. >> reporter: that fire is out. the grass fire started an hour and half ago. we are on send the cove road on the b.a.r.t. tracks not far from the concord maintenance yard. you see b.a.r.t. police and workers out here. as a result of this grass fire,

even though the fire is out, bart beck services out between concord and pleasant hill stations. they have a bus bridge in place as a result. we are not sure why they have not been able to restore service. we see workers focusing on the electrical lines out here and also a high-voltage box. we are wondering if the grass fire impacted the electrical service out here. b.a.r.t. is an electrical train so that could be the problem. until they get that resolved, b.a.r.t. service shutdown between concord and pleasant hill and they have five buses acting as a bridge. bob redell, today in the bay . chb investigating a crash on i-to 80 in san francisco north of the monterey boulevard offramp around 1:00 this morning. police say one pedestrian was killed. we are trying to learn what led to the crash. all lanes are back open for the morning commute. the search is on for a suspect to kill the man and an injured two others at a livermore bowling alley. officers are looking for this man, roger aleman garcia.

they say he is a convicted felon with a violent history and that he knew the victims he shot saturday night. the two other men shot are expected to survive. livermore police are offering a reward for more information. berkeley police searching for a suspect or suspects involved in hate crime where swastikas were edged into cars on monterey avenue over the weekend. a fourth car parked in the area had the windows smashed. police said they are investigating whether these cars were targeted or if those is random. independent truckers will once again protest a bill they say will put them out of business. the truckers are gathering at the port of oakland again this morning. truckers are fighting assembly bill 5 which they say will cripple the already chaotic supply chain the bill signed in 2019 says that independent contractors have to adhere to new rules. business owners say it's tough to meet those standards taking in an estimated 70,000
