>> a well maintained trashcan is going to make a lot of difference. right now controversial cans. semper cisco is rolling out six kinds of trash cans hoping that you can help them decide which ones to buy. a live report on that hefty price tag. bay area business owners are speaking out after vandals tag their business. he is the one facing the fine. the response from the city. secret service is under scrutiny after deleting text messages around the time the insurrection happened. what the agency is blaming for the missing messages. thursday morning. thank you so much for starting your day with us. let's get started with a look at your forecast. how is it looking?

it's going to be hot in those inland areas depending on where you will be today is how much it will heat up. right now it's about 55 degrees. notice we are starting out pretty clear overall. a few areas of cloud cover and then by about 10:00 or 11:00 your temperatures climb into the 70s pretty quickly. it's going to warm up pretty fast through the interior. but you look at areas like san francisco and one thing you will notice is that marine layer hangs out pretty much for the first half of the day and then we get peaks of sunshine in until 11:00. if you're in san francisco you could be noticing new trash cans. they've been creating a buzz all week because of their design and the price tag. today in the bay we have a deeper dive into where this comes from and it will give us a look at the options whether they are worth it or not?

>> this one is called the slim silhouette. when i was looking at the prototype pictures trying to choose which one i liked the best this intrigues me because this is just one of new trash can designs that are rolling out to 26 locations and they will replace existing trash cans with the design that the people like most and which one works best. you may have seen the mockups earlier this week when they were unveiled but the public works department has been working on them for over a year now. and part of that is to reduce litter and keep sidewalks clean. but they are also trying to replace existing trash cans because they are 20 years old. some of them like the custom designs like we are standing next to have clever names like salt and pepper slim silhouette and self square. those are the ones that are

making the headlines because of the price tags. they have sensors that can message when they are full. how complicated can it be? they are trash cans? public works says they have to meet standards that we may not think about when it comes to picking up trash cans for home. >> you have to have one that the material is strong the pieces are strong it's easy to fix or repair and it's very easy to clean. and easy to remove graffiti. the maintenance is important and we wanted to be beautiful. this is an object that will be across the city with over 3000 of them and we would need them for a generation. >> there is a map posted on where you can find the trash cans over the 60 day pilot program. the gray and orange icons are custom-built green and yellow are the standard ones and each will have a qr code for folks to leave feedback.

about his death. police this week released a video showing the moment that patrick fong was shot and killed. this happen sunday morning on 13th avenue outside of his girlfriend's home. his girlfriend's son was inside the house. heard the gunfire and through an interpreter told us that they are now living in fear. >> we have to be more careful. and more resilient. watch your neighborhood and your surroundings so what happened to me won't happen to you. >> a $12,000 reward is being offered help track down the killers. opening statements will pick up today. an unspecified health issue stopped at one day after it started. he is accused of killing smart after an off-campus party in 1986.

his father ruben is accused of helping them hide the body which has never been found. the trial is taking place in salinas and is expected to last several months. in san francisco business owner targeted repeatedly randall says he is tired of the vandal is and having to cover all of the cleanup costs. the owner is actually opening another location at inner sunset. he says they struck for the second time this week just after he applied a fresh coat of paint. he then got a notice from the city to clean it up in 30 days or face a 352 dollar fine. >> they give you 30 days to clean it up. but then it's just going to happen again. it's very frustrating. >> the public works department points out that most cities do require private properties

you get to upper 90s in areas like antioch it really showcases the difference in temperatures within just a few miles depending on what kind of vegetation is around are the mountains or water san mateo at 75 semper cisco in the upper 50s it will get breezy as well into the semper cisco area imparts the northbay santa rosa having a high of about 86. clear lake nearing triple digits. but this is seasonable for this time of year we are going to take into consideration that is very dry. so once the wind picks up for the afternoon at 20 to 20 one miles per hour there's a lot of dry brush and the fires can quickly start and spread. we will continue to see breezy wins in for tomorrow but that dry brush is really the concern. the reason why we are cooling off for tomorrow is there is a

great as well. you have the bay bridge and you can't to the top of the tower. but you're not driving there so that's fine. you can see those tail lights driving through cost county there's a tiny delay out of alejo and concorde. looking at the rest of the bay there is a smooth drive with no injuries. it is 5:32. world health leaders are meeting at this hour. they may decide to declare monkeypox a public health outbreak. we have a look at what that could mean and the new bay area push to stop the spread. >> right now they will be holding a second emergency committee meeting about whether not they should declare it a worldwide emergency. if it is, that could mean making recommendations for travel and what countries should all be doing. and how to ramp up testing and

vaccines. they generally release a statement following such meetings. here is where we stand right now. there are 200 cases across the bay area. 2100 cases here in the u.s. 14,500 cases worldwide. that number is more than triple what it was a month ago. they held a monkeypox vaccination clinic by appointment only. it was busy the whole time. for this afternoon they will also be holding a virtual town hall meeting to raise awareness about the monkeypox virus. the county is also promising more clinics soon. if this is any indication people will definitely show up and they will be ready to roll up their sleeves. >> a friend of mine had monkeypox. he was kind enough to share his experience on facebook and also shared the link to the county vaccination order which is how i found out about about.

>> the public health department in san francisco will also be holding a public hearing to address the outreach effort and campaign for vaccination. there will be links to both meetings on facebook instagram and more. we will be listening to that meeting as well. when it comes to making it in the bay your morning drive can be expensive especially if you don't have an electric car. but not like it was a month ago where gas prices are now down. i noticed this yesterday. this is a five week slide. let's go to the nbc bay area bob o'dell who is live in dublin. the question that a lot of people are hoping for is whether not the gas prices will continue to go down? >> good morning. there is a prediction they could drop another $.35-$.65 per gallon over the next few weeks alone.

here are the latest numbers and the average price for a gallon of gas. sf at 587. san jose 581. if you compare the current prices on the left to the prices from a month ago you can see the gas prices in the bay area have dropped around $.65 a gallon over the past few days. patrick de haan tells us that historically at gas money.com that we are in a fairly rare territory right now to see such a significant decline from such high levels. prices are down over concerns that there could be a recession which would reduce oil consumption and gasoline supplies are up for four out of the last five weeks. he is predicting there could be another drop of $.35-$.65 over the coming weeks but he also points out that the market has been extremely volatile this year.

front 2018 to 2019, 56% of people moved out of california. they were only leaving the state. 20 to 21 jumped to nearly 60% and 7500 california families became texans. joining me to talk more about this is matthew con. i've been looking over the research and in the latest book you're talking about the impact that remote work economy has had on all major cities across the u.s. we know the high cost of housing is an issue and the major factor when you are looking at living in the bay area. what else do you think is really driving people to move to other states? >> in my research i have focused on opportunities and other places but also the push factors. so the california cities have faced call the of life changes. crime is up. public school axis continues to be an issue. the homeless pose issues and

challenges for local quality-of- life in san francisco and los angeles. home prices are so high in california that the average home is selling for one .6 million wall in ohio homes are selling for 200,000. people could trade in their home for a ohio homes. >> and then they can rent them out and have extra income coming in as well. so, what states or areas is california really competing with? i mention texas as a big one? >> there are several areas where the california residents are moving. some are moving to the distant suburbs for those working from home. elon musk moved to texas. in my book i talk about moving to where your family was based where you grew up. i also talked about moving to beautiful places. to the north or like montana or idaho the diversity of

one of the criticisms against him during the campaign was that he was too conservative on crime. the president will be in pennsylvania today where we expect him to propose spending 37 additional billion dollars on police departments and crime- fighting. 13 billion would be to hire 100,000 new police officers. there's also money to shift responsibilities for responding to nonviolent crimes particularly mental health issues to public health workers something that to the crowd wanting to defund the police as supported. a bill that would better protect the electoral college in the process of electing the president. president trump tried to convince vice president pence to say no to certifying the vote in congress. this vote would make it clear that they have a ceremonial role and increase the minimum vote to question election results during the certification process.
