"today in the bay's" live look into where we can check them out and give us a bit of an opinion about some of these. i know you have one near you right now, ginger. >> reporter: that's right, marcus. we are next to one of the three designed custom. type trash cans being rolled out in san francisco this week. three custom-designed trash cans, three standard ones. six total. these custom-design ones are the ones creating a buzz because of their price tag. they're reported to cost more than $10,000 each. one the prototypes, over $20,000. you will see these different designs at 26 locations throughout san francisco. eventually, the city will

replace all existing trash cans with a design that people might like and say, which one works best. you may have seen the mark ones when they were unveiled earlier this week. the san francisco department has been working on them for about a year now. part of the reason is to reduce litter and keep sidewalks clean. also, it's time to replace the city's existing trash cans, because they're 20 years old. some have closer designs like salt and pepper, blank silhouette and soft-ware. they have messages for city workers when they are full. they're actually smart, as well. maybe you're thinking, how come? can it be. they're trash cans. the public board's director says, they have to be standard, meaning, we are at the store picking out trash cans for our home. >> we need a can that is strong, the pieces are strong, it's easy to fix and repair. also, very easy to clean. easy to remove graffiti. the maintenance is very important.

we want it to be beautiful. this is an object with over 3000 of them that we will have for a generation. >> reporter: the department of public works posted where you can find the trash cans over the pilot program that will last 60 days. the gray and orange icons are trash cans custom-built for san francisco. green and yellow ones are the standard ones each will have a qr code for folks to leave their feedback. might seem like a big fuss for something you don't usually think too much about, but the city will ultimately buy 3000 of these mesh trash cans at a price of up to $3000 each. they're with a qr code, as mentioned, as you can see on the side of each trashcan. if you have an opinion about it, go ahead and get that qr code for your feedback. marcus, i don't know if you have an opinion so far, but you will have time to make up your mind. >> you know what? i was thinking about it. if they choose the one they

bay area news. 6:05 right now. the girlfriend of a ride-share food delivery driver, shot and killed in oakland, now speaking out about his death. oakland police, this week, releasing surveillance video showing the moments he was shot and killed in little saigon. no arrests have been made at this time, led by them is to give us believe they have located the suspect's car. the shooting happened sunday morning on 13th avenue outside his girlfriend's hampered his girlfriend's son was inside the house and heard the gunfire. through an interpreter, she told us, they are now living in fear. >> the reason i accepted this interview is to let others know that we have to be more careful, more resilient. we got to watch our neighborhood and surrounding area. it could be you, what happened to me. >> a $12,000 reward is now being offered to help track down the killers. 6:06 now. opening statements, picking up where they left off monday surrounding the death of krishan's bar. more than 25 years ago, with health issues stopping the trial just one day after it started. flores is accused of killing

the cal poly student, spar, following an off-campus party in 1996. his father, ruben, is accused of helping him hide the body, which has never been found that the trial is taking place in salinas. it's expected to last several months. a san francisco business owner, targeted repeatedly by vandals, says, he is tired of the packing and covering the cleanup cost. the owner of gao viet kitchen in san mateo is opening another location near sunset. he says, taggers have struck him many times. the second time, this week, just after he applied for a pay over the previous tad but he got a notice from the city to clean it up in 30 days or face a $360 fine >> they gave me 30 days to clean it up, but guess what? you clean up, next day, it's going to happen again. what do i do?

you know? it's very frustrating. >> i can imagine that. the public department points out, most cities require private property owners to clean up graffiti on their property. properties that are hit repeatedly can file for hardship. also, city leaders are now considering different funds with some of the cleanup costs for businesses hit frequently by the taggers. 6:08 on your thursday morning. where is the sunshine? yes, a great start to our day throughout the paper a live look outside in san francisco. pretty foggy out there. this morning, we got an update, as well, california's severe drought. vianey, you got new numbers for us? >> yeah, this gets updated every thursday. normally, what this takes into account is any sort of rain or changes that have happened within the past -- not last week -- but the previous weeks. you guys know, we haven't seen any rain.

so, as of today, the drought monitor, 60% of the state of california remains under an extreme drought. 100% of the state of telephone remains under some form of drought. so, no significant province. no movement in general, and unfortunately, in our current forecast, also no chance of rain in sight to help ease off some of the concerns when it comes to the dry brush that we have seen driving around the roads. you can look up and see the dry hills with a couple of brushfires already from that last week. forecasted high for this afternoon, it is going to be another hot day for inland areas. so, if you want to get some sunshine, start to get some clearing for the afternoon. in oakland, 83. only five in concord. it will get breezy at times, especially in areas around the coast, and san francisco can expect a high of about 67 degrees. then, we have a couple of changes heading into the weekend. but like i said, that's my forecast first.

we will check in with mike now for gas prices. yeah. trying to get a break this morning? tracking the cheapest gas price options, as we do almost every morning. the number one spot today, oakland at the top your, $4.99 a gallon. the second here is in santa clara. south bay, $5.19. platinum that's on washington street. at the bottom, on the peninsula, san mateo, arco on delaware street. gas there, $5.25. all great prices compared to a few weeks ago. great speech around the bay, as well. zooming in towards the south bay, pretty much tapering off from the first build up a half hour ago. that's great light drive now coming into the silicon valley. no surprises out of the pass. a little bit of a buildup on the tri valley. very little. maybe some slumming at fremont. we can check in on that in a few minutes. a roadside fire, however, in summersville. they are clearing that up out of antioch. highway 37 and circle, the bay bridge meter let's have been activated. back to you. coming up, washington wants silicon valley to make more silicon.

5%, the second day of gains in a row. we'll talk more about them in a second. but the u.s. senate has passed a chips bill. along with the so-called fab bill would boost domestic manufacturers of silicon chips, and the factories where they make the chips. the chips act offers tens of millions of dollars in incentives to manufacturers here in the united states. the fab act offers chipmakers investment credit for building factories. this is a bipartisan effort. both sides, seeing the value of encouraging u.s. chipmakers to manufacture chips here and not in asia. >> do the math on that. if we don't level the playing field and make america more attractive for these manufacturing for this chip legislation, and through this other f.a.b. investment tax credit legislation, you know, we will end up with virtually no manufacturing on our shows.

>> the big winner is santa clara's intel, the nation's largest chipmaker. already planning to build factories in the u.s., moving business out of taiwan to places like arizona. politics have got mixed in here. speaker of the house, nancy pelosi's husband, a longtime wall street investor, but lots of shares of chipmakers like invidia, leading some critics to claim foul play. the idea the senate would pass this bill is nearly guaranteed. not only did it have bipartisan support, the senate actually passed a similar bill back in march. for that matter, invidia probably won't move as much as intel. experts are telling cnbc this morning, gas prices have likely peaked and may hit a $4 nationwide average in the next few weeks. gas prices have been falling for 40 days, since demand started to slow. speculators speculate the demand will fall even further if and when the world falls

showing up to the party today, vianey. >> yeah, you will not need a sweater or heavy coat or anything. as the sun begins to say, hello, on this thursday morning, let's look at our temperatures. right now, walnut creek, 57 degrees. if you notice, we have warmed up pretty fast. at 10:00 or 11:00, we start to climb in the 70s. then, into the 80s around your lunch hour. meanwhile, san francisco, it is going to take a little bit longer, because the marine layer has been hanging out at about 1000 feet so, you know, if you look at the 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. timestamp, finally some sunshine through there. temperatures in san francisco today will be in the upper 60s. meanwhile, dublin, 55 degrees right now. mix of sun and clouds. then, a lot of sunshine and a lot of warming once again. we're talking 80s and 90s. in san jose right now, 59 degrees.

winds speeds are calm. as you notice, we clear out nicely. right around 1:00, upper 70s, but we are expecting to climb to the 80s today. let's take a look at some of our daytime highs for the rest of the bay area. what can we expect? the hottest spots will be in concord, livermore and morgan hill. mid 90s into the interior with martina, 89. napa, 86. san jose, 83. palo alto, in the 80s. some of the cooler spots will include areas around half moon bay and san francisco. also, monitoring the wind speeds, because it will start to get breezy into the afternoon. notice the timestamp there, about 5:30. you will definitely notice it more around the coastline and around 2:00 when it starts to pick up for inland areas. 15, 20 plus miles e xt seven da look at what to expect. a system nearby drops the temperatures down by as much as 3 to 8 degrees, especially in

indian land areas. high of 86 tomorrow, a break from the upper 90s. but then, as we wore up on saturday and sunday, hey, it will be perfect weather to enjoy the outdoors heading into the weekend. now, a check on the roads with mike. all right, vianey, we talked about a little bit of slowing for the bay bridge. what we are looking at might have caused a bit of a precaution. looking over here, there will be at least a few meter lights turned on now, but just before 6:00. there is a build on the incline. no major backup at the plaza. we will give it a few more seconds. over here at 37, highway 4, also slowing. a fire there on the roadside. sounds like it may involve a building. we are tracking that in the newsroom. eastbound, away from the

welcome back. 6:24. south bay lawmakers, introducing new legislation that could provide citizenship for millions of u.s. immigrants. the bill would update provisions in the immigration act of 1929, allowing anyone who's lived in the u.s. for 7 or more years to be registered for legal eminent residency. reporters say, it would provide a new pathway to citizenship for some 8 million immigrants. critics won out, it may face a tough road in the u.s. senate, especially the way that the senate is currently compromised. surprised, i should say. 6:25 now but maybe you should think twice about taking those online reviews at face value. especially when it comes to the doctors and offices. at least, that's the advice from one former federal

health emergency. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is here with a look at what that could mean and how to stop that spread, mireles? >> the world health organization has been meeting for a few hours now and it is the second consecutive emergency meeting about whether or not to declare? parks a emergency status. if it is, that would determine what happens with travel, how to ramp up testing of vaccines and a statement will be released following the committee's meeting. we will wants that. also, where we stand right now is 200 cases of monkeypox are across the bay area. 21 hundred cases are in the united states. 14,500 are worldwide. that number there on the bottom, the worldwide number, it's about half of what was a month ago. now, santa clara county did hold a monkeypox vaccination clinic by invite only, by apartment only.

electric car. one thing we can say, though, not like it was a month ago. gas prices nationwide are now falling.this is a five-week slide we're seeing. let's go to "today in the bay's" bob redell, live in dublin for us this morning. on, we will continue to see the prices drop? >> reporter: according to one energy we spoke with, the answer is yes. good morning to you, marcus. the person i spoke with predict that, in the next few weeks, the average price of gas here in the bay area could drop another $.35-$.65 per gallon. here are the latest overnight averages from aaa. here for a gallon of gas in the bay area, oakland, $5.82. five , the current price is on the left of your screen, from a month ago, you can see gas prices in the bay area have dropped around $.65 per gallon over the past 30 days. patrick dehond, an analysis i was talking about, he is head

of the petroleum analysis at gasbuddy.com and tells us, this is a historically different level, and prices are down over concerns of the economy and fears of a recession that can reduce oil consumption and points out that gas's supply is up for four or five weeks, but also points out the market has been extremely volatile this year. >> there are factors for gas prices to go right back up. if we do see better-than- expected economic data, we could see prices going up, as we could if we see a major hurricane. that would lead to disruptions or shutdowns. >> reporter: "the washington post" reports that, by the end of the year, towards the end, the price of oil can surge again by as much as 50% because, on december 5th, russia will be banned from shipping the oil to europe, as punishment for the war in ukraine. reporting live here in dublin and, bob redell, "today in the bay.

" >> all right, bob, hoping for the prices to fall. as you were talking about, down $.65 is great. thanks so much. we all know that making it in the bay is no easy task. some people are now over it. they're moving out. a recent report shows just how much the exodus is really gaining steam. look at this. from 2018 to 2019, 56% of people moved out of california. they were just leaving the state. 20% to 20%, jumping nearly 60%. this is amazing in itself. 7500 californian families became texans. we will talk more about the topic with economists and professor matthew kahn. thank you so much for joining me this morning. >> good morning. >> looking over this research, your latest book, you're really talking about the impact remote work economy has had on all major cities across the u.s. you know the high cost of housing is an issue here. major factor when it comes to living in the bay area.

but what else do you think is driving people to move to other states? >> in my research, i'm focused on opportunities in other places, but also pushback factors. so, california cities have faced a quality-of-life challenge. crime is up in our cities. look school access continues to be an issue. the homeless crisis poses challenges for local quality-of- life in san francisco and los angeles. home prices are so high in california that the average home in san francisco is selling for $1.6 million, while in ohio, homes are sold for $200,000. people can trade in their home for 80 ohio holmes. >> sure. then, they could rent those out and actually have income coming in, as well. so, what states or areas is california competing with? i mentioned, texas was a big one. >> californians are moving to several other areas. some are moving to a distant suburbs. for those who were working from

police. but biden has been consistent in his support. >> that's exactly right. remember, biden was key in passing the crime bill in the 1990s. none of the criticisms against him during the campaign was he was too conservative on crime president biden will be in pennsylvania today. we expect him to propose an additional $37 billion for expenditures on police departments and crime-fighting. $13 billion of that would be to hire 100,000 new police officers. now, there's also money to shift some of the responsibility for responding to nonviolent crimes, especially mental health issues for public health workers that's something that defund crowd has supported. bipartisan support in the senate for a bill that would better protect the electoral college. electing a president, and the process, your number then -president trump tried to convince vice president pence to say, no to certifying the bill in congress. this would make it sure that the vp has a ceremonial role.

it would also increase the minimum vote for the election results during the certification process. with the watch that. but the editorial board of "the washington post" this morning, calling for a rapid passage of the bill, saying, quote, the president trump attempted to steal the 2020 election is scary enough. he or another candidate to steal it next time around and it remains a terrifying threat. the committee investigating the generally six attacks on the capitol is going to hold a primetime hearing tonight. we talked about how this could be the last one to wrap it all up, but the committee says, when mrs. are coming forward, as they see other witnesses testify. so, it might not be the last one. we believe we'll see the outtakes from then president trump's address to the nation the day after the attack. the white house insiders say, trump had to be controlled even to make this video. the oval office insider, cassidy hutchinson, testifying that some cabinet secretaries were considering the 25th amendment if he didn't make this video. nbc will carry the hearings does

in the 50s to start. 24-hour temperature change, not much of a change there. very similar to what we saw yesterday. you'll see it change, though, tomorrow. that's because we have a severe look, but look at this. we're just seeing the cloud cover on the marine layer around the coastline, forecasting a high for this afternoon expecting to pump up into the 90s. gilmore, 93. 87 in san jose. through the east bay, this is what i like to point out when i talk about the range of temperatures, because you look at 70s around oakland, and then you see 80s in fremont then, you see upper 90s in antioch at 97 degrees. meanwhile, around the peninsula, 70s with the wind, pretty light. we can expect to see the breezy winds, especially for san francisco from the west at about 19 or 20 plus miles per hour through the city. the north bay winds from the west right now, 10 miles per hour. temptress, wrapping up in the

80s. as far as the seven-day forecast, remember i mentioned a little bit of cooling heading into tomorrow. well, it will cool off by about three degrees in san francisco for friday. then, saturday and sunday, we'll start to climb back up to the upper 60s. we'll also notice cooling for inland areas by as much as 8 degrees, then bumping up into the 90s again. sunday again. mike, what are we looking out for? watch this report just off of that skyway coming down towards 101 westbound 80. we will watch that. so far, it hasn't had more slowing. not an issue. typical build towards the bay bridge, as we see it is slowing there university towards powell. typical section here. lighter than yesterday. still, we have one lane blocked the opposite direction. eastbound 80 and gilman. as you go over gilman, one lane is blocked from the overnight repair factors. we have the latest update there. that may cause some slowing away from the bay bridge. getting past the dunbar bridge, we see speed a little bit better now.
