total loss. the ancient forest did survive and now this is what it looks like as the public can see it coming back for themselves. two years after the czu fire , it is obvious that california's oldest state park burned. the smaller trees are gone and some douglas firs did not come back. but you can see fuzzy green growth on the giant red words, some are thousand years old. there are tiny flowers on the ground and lots of bugs and birds. >> you can see it is regenerating and since the fire , there has been tremendous cleanup. all the structures and the vehicles and toxic soils were removed. the burned trees have been taken down and it is a different site but the trees are coming back well.

they turned the trees they took down into lumber to build fences, decks and even siding on some buildings. the historic structures were destroyed by fire and they will be rebuilt farther from the heart of the ancient forest where they can be protected from the next wildfire. the ranger here says he expects more fires in the future. >> i think that the warming and drying climate has exacerbated the intensity and the rate at which the fires are happening. to see the intensity come through this landscape which is typically moist and dripping with fog in august, things are changing. >> reporter: it was a treat to get in there and look around. if you want to explore the park, you can drive big basin highway which will open again today. there are 45 parking spots available only by reservation.

you can partner with the state park for weekend service and there are 18 miles of the road open again. it will be years before people can camp in the park again, but it will be nice. the workers that were there, not even the rangers, were so excited. >> i love how they used some of the lumbar. >> it is great because it keeps the tree and the wood there. >> with park reservations, there's only 45 spots? >> the way it happened when i went a couple of months ago, they have reservations there too . you're not going to hike all day and you make your reservation for 1:00 to 3:00. >> we are hiking all day. >> we are all fitting in one car . >> thank you very much.
