the icon is we do start out in the 50s, that eventually we will climb once again into the 80s, by about 12:00 pm, upper 70s. clearing skies and then we will get the peaks of sunshine into the afternoon for san francisco so we will talk more about the daytime highs and what to expect in just a few minutes. this is inside the capitol in washington, where the dust is settling after what for now is the final scheduled hearing of the january 6 committee. the primetime hearing last night, accusing former president trump of violating his oath of office that day. they are focused on really what the president was doing or not doing as the siege unfolded. >> reporter: absolutely right, good morning to you, witnesses testified that as that a violent mob was descending on the capital, former president trump, was at the white house, watching it all unfold on

television, and he didn't do anything to stop it for 187 minutes. 13th testimony, the house committee investigating the january 6 capital attack painted a portrait of a paris event -- president, president trump did not fail to act during the 187 minutes, between leaving the ellipse, and telling the mob to go home. he chose not to act. >> the president was content to watch the insurrection unfold on television in a west ring -- west wing hoping to see an unequivocal strong statement clearing out the capital. >> are you aware by any phone call to the secretary of

defense that day? >> the committee emphasized the terror felt at the capital that they show missouri senator, josh, running from the mob. >> an anonymous white house security officials said secret service members with vice president mike pence feared for their lives. >> a former white house spokesperson said the president only exacerbated that circumstance. >> for him to tweet out the message about mike pence, it was him pouring gasoline on the fire and making it worse. >> reporter: the committee should outtakes from a video shot the day after the attack where the defeated president refused to acknowledge his election loss. the committee trying to make the case mister trump was derelict in carrying out his duty as president and is unfit to hold office ever again. and the committee will hold more public hearings in september, both to reveal new evidence and also to deliver its final report. laura? >> something to watch.

the second fire still burning this morning. it is being called the ends are fire, the evacuations and road closures are in place. 80 acres have burned, with zero containment so far. one home has been destroyed, several others are threatened right now. we will continue to follow this fire, no one so far was hurt. some people may be daydreaming when it comes to mega million dollars. everybody always talks about what are you going to do if you went. here is your chance. >> you know of course we all understand that, this is america's third largest lottery jackpot in history, it is up for grabs tonight. jenna is crunching those numbers for us, and ginger, i hear your outside of a place that has been very lucky with the jackpot in the past. >> reporter: that is right. good morning, guys. speaking of daydreaming, that is what we have been doing for the past 10 minutes talking about what we would do with that money, definitely the excitement is building for this

jackpot. it is up to $660 million if someone takes it home tonight. it is the third largest ever, now there is some jackpot magic where we are at, if you believe that lightning strikes twice, you may want to check out the safely behind me. in 2009 it used to be a pack and save where a woman 1/30 $8 million, having one of two winning mega million tickets. other lucky places to check out, if you believe in that, repeat luck, there is a chevron that one over $75 billion also in 2009, a liquor mart in fremont in 2012 that one over $50 million and a san jose store in 2013 with a major jackpot of over $324 million. check out some other large jackpots in 2014 in san mateo and milpitas, and most recently in 2018 in san jose with a jackpot of over $543 million. the jackpot was last one on april 15 and since then there have been almost 18 million

winning tickets at all price levels, and those have been one across the country but that is the reason this jackpot has built up because no one has one since april 15. a word to the wise, you may not want to spend williams before you win the mega millions, because there is a very slim chance that you actually went. i want to get this right. i mentioned it before, it is 302,575,000 two 1. very slim chances of winning. if you are that lucky one, anyone in the bay family would shave their love. >> i will buy you that lunch if i went. >> i went to go inside to try to buy that ticket because for the first time ever, they don't open until 8:00 am. my dream was already a little

right by 1 o'clock, we will bump up into the upper 60s. even though we are starting cloudy, it will eventually warm- up, this will make way for a beautiful weekend ahead. let's see how the gas prices are doing. >> we are going around the bay, every time we try to get you great prices. it is friday, we're digging deep to get some of those prices around the bay like in san mateo, $5.67 a gallon on the beacon, world oil on monument boulevard is $5.49 and finally in san francisco we got it for $5.29. we have one alert despite the traffic, for highway 24, two lanes are still blocked westbound 24th packing up to highway 13, some folks are moving down to the freeway, others are getting to surface streets but you can stick it out once you get past that short section, everything is clear again, still working on a crash there, no major injuries. the rest of the bays drive looks pretty good right now. back to you. giants fans now that the all-star break is over, expecting to pick up.

it is 6:13 am and we have clearly got the fog this morning. take a look at our fog map, you can see it not just around the coastline, but making its way through the interior for all of the fog, a live look in san francisco with the sun just above, we will talk about how warm we will be today this afternoon coming up. the roads are clear, bay bridge just turned on this friday light here, we do have delays for highway 24, because of that crash near telegraph and major parts delays for a couple areas. we will talk about that all coming up. very happy friday to you. another boost on the market on thursday, futures calling for a lower open on the nasdaq as i mentioned, the social network could disappoint investors, twitter is going to report its profits after the bell and then we have lift up here because lyft is cutting jobs in san francisco, so is total, and exercise based company sort of like palatine, based in the city, more than a third of the company faces layoffs. the ceo says the company is

trying to cut costs in order to turn a profit. so it can start offering shares in ipo. facebook started rolling out changes to its app adding content you might find interesting. from people you don't know, but they post things you might want to see. people use facebook to see how friends and family are doing but they use other social media to watch things that entertain and interest them and they are using tiktok more than facebook and facebook knows that. amazon says it is one step closer to delivering your packages by drone, they will just drop into your front or backyard, the drones would depart from your local amazon distribution center, so in some cases, amazon says your delivery would arrive about an hour after you ordered it. >> how do you know if the customer has a suitable yard for delivery? >> we will go out and physically survey the yard. we will make sure that there is a location where we can deliver our packages, that is suitably set back from structures, from fence lines. >> i think it is a fascinating

the north bay, and let's get right to some of those factoids. let's talk about climate change and fog. we have our beautiful city, the most iconic fog that we see typically wrapping itself around the golden gate bridge, and here is some factoids. the benefits of fog, it keeps our temperatures cooler, higher humidity reduces wildfire risk and it also creates healthier ecosystems which means a faster wildfire recovery. fog has a lot of benefits for us, but within the past couple of years, we have been seeing the fog disappearing. less fog could create problems including warmer temperatures, lower humidity which creates a higher wildfire risk and also it creates stress on her ecosystems and there is also less humidity for our beautiful trees, like the redwoods. in the past you know, 100 years, we have seen a fog decrease of 34.5% as far as the hours of fog in the day, we are down to about 3 to 4 hours less per day. i also have a wonderful climate

hotspot to detail info in the nbc bay area.com climate in crisis, it is called disappearing fog in the bay area. it gives you greater insight as to why fog is so important, and the changes we have seen in the past year. as far as our forecast highs for today, once we get a little bit of relief from the fog, we will get some sunshine and it will be a little bit colder into the afternoon, we will be in the 50s around san francisco, upper 80s and through the interior, livermore, 89. take a look at the seven day forecast, for saturday and sunday, i know a lot of folks are planning there we can pick you don't have to worry about much other than enjoying the sunshine, the temperatures will be in the 80s and 90s in the inland areas. overall, friday is like but we do have one big issue over highway 24. we zoom over here and it continues with the traffic alert, you are jammed up from highway 13, the freeway, there may be a disabled vehicle, maybe someone ran out of gas

heading past telegraph avenue. we will hope to have lanes open here just a few minutes. we have issues for the part lines. a couple of stretches of the antioch line, we have some recovery now because there were some power issues coming through concord and pleasant hill. we have a problem in the tunnel for bart so you might want to consider marking not using that. >> 6:21 am, coming up next on today in the bait, nbc bay area response. >> who wants to dig around in a file cabinet this weekend? no one. but, i have a quarter million reasons, possibly more that you really should. it all has to do with inflation it all has to do with inflation here's why tribal leaders

6:27 am, we talk about it all the time, gas, food, clothing, pretty much everything, prices are up these days tanks to inflation. >> you probably wouldn't expect, call your insurance agent, chris is joining us this morning live from his home with a wake-up call for us all. this is something i never thought about. >> this is a sneaky inflation story, it really could sting you. ask yourself the question, if your home or to burn down today, would it cost more to rebuild it than it did a couple months ago. the answer is yes possibly a lot more, consider this. the national association of homebuilders says the cost of home construction material has increased about 20% over the past year alone.

what have people done about it? not very much. insurance group pulled thousands of people, more than a third of policyholders have adjusted our policies for inflation, and that means a lot of people right now, this morning, are under insured. >> so, these insurance policies can be really off. >> yeah, possibly by hundreds of thousands of dollars, we have a case in point consider catherine, whose home was in the santa cruz mountains, down during the fire, one bedroom in a cabin, both burned down. insurance paid up yet there is a quarter million dollar gap now, catherine's policy paid about 400 grand. that is nowhere close to the builders quote the estimates are fully rebuilt, it is more than $650,000. a huge gap there. >> that is a lot of money. >> now that you know this, a lot of people probably didn't think about it until just now. what do you do to adjuster

insurance? >> nobody wants to do this but you really do need to look at your insurance policy. i want to show you where to look. look for the thing called the declarations page. it can have numbers on it. check them out. then, call a builder or two and ask them, can i realistically fully rebuilt my house for the money that is listed in the policy, and if those builders say no, go back to your insurance agent, ask about upping your coverage, and the price you are going to have to pay. insurance is a classic case of you get what you pay for, and not a penny more. so, you really do need to rethink about this. unfortunately. hey, we have the weekend to do it, so that is on the to do list over the weekend. >> that is not how i wanted to spend the weekend, but better do it now then wish you had later. >> you have to protect all of your valuables in your house as well. >> for sure, exactly. are those more expensive? the answer is yes. you have to take that into

fog is the big talker. not just around the coast line and into the interior and parts of san jose are seeing that fog with limited visibility and look how beautiful that fog looks in san francisco. we will get some sunshine, even in san francisco. a beautiful mix of sun and clouds. unfortunately we match your dress for this one stretch of roads. we have an alert on the roads at telegraph avenue. the traffic alert continues. two lanes blocked approaching highway 13. clear through the maze and at the bay bridge where the metering lights are on. the roadways to the area are clear. b.a.r.t. has a major problem. they stopped the train through the berkley hills tunnel. something going on with the antioch lime. living your forward in the recovery from the devastating czu fire pick big basin redwood state park's reopening two years after the fire cost so much damage.

>> ada some of those park workers thought would not come. kristin sanchez is here with a closer look at what we can expect. >> it's an exciting day and ginger is on the lotto story but i feel like i won the lottery story but the last time i was a big basin, this is what it looked like. it was on fire. hamas were on fire. rangers are telling us that day they thought big basin would be a total loss but the ancient forests did survive and now the public can see it coming back to life for themselves. two years after the date cz you fire, it's obvious that california's oldest state park did learn that the smaller trees are gone. the douglas firs are not coming back but if you look beyond the charred trunks you will see signs of life. fuzzy green growth on those giant redwoods, some of which are more than 1000 years old.

there are tiny flowers on the ground. grasses are in the meadow and lots of bugs and birds. >> if you look around you can see it's regenerating. since the fire there's been a tremendous amount of cleanup. all the structures had to be removed. the burnt out vehicles. toxic soils were removed and lots of hazard trees were taken down. it's a very different landscape then it was but the trees are coming back remarkably well. >> look at how crews were able to repurpose some of the redwoods they had to cut down. they turned those trees into lumber and are using it for the building of fences and decks and siding for some of those buildings. the historic structures from field trips back in the date were destroyed by fire. they will be rebuilt but they will be rebuilt further from the heart of the ancient forest where they can be protected from the next wildfire. because of climate change, the ranger said there will be more fires in the future.

>> i think it's obvious that a warming and drying climate has exacerbated the intensity and probably the rate at which these fires are happening. certainly to see a fire of this intensity come through this landscape, which is typically moist and typically dripping with fog in august, things are changing. >> if you want to explore big basin redwood state for park for yourself, drive on highway 236. it will be permanently open again as of today. there are just about 45 parking spots but they are available by reservation so plan ahead. you can take metro santa cruz parting with the state park to deliver weekend service. then you don't have to worry about parking. bikes and hikers are always welcome and there 18 myers of buyer roads open again. but can we camp? not yet. it will be a couple of years before they can make enough of the park safe for the public but they are happy people can come back and see how it's regenerating. he said some people will say it

looks ugly and there are piles of debris but that's part of the rebirth. >> i remember covering that fire in the news and when it hit that area and how many people were affected. felt emotional about it because they've gone up there until trips and everything for years >> generations. we did not say the worst of it when we were there two years ago because we came across down power lines and we had to turn around. getting to go back in and see. it was really cool. >> glad that is your lottery winning. it was a nice week ending it on a high note. this is a tough one and a store you will only see on nbc bay area. i say tough because vandals have been hitting. san jose investigators show a bunch of burglaries in willow glen and some are connected and caught on video. some businesses have been hit recently on lincoln avenue. among them is the town lounge and bar at a nearby phone

store. some say that mages appear to show a similar crew. >> extremely frustrating. you don't know if you will come back to work and it will be robbed or not. >> it's the same guys. one big guy. a couple of small guys in the driver outside. >> police are trying to determine who the men are. they are watching for potential related fencing operations. another big hit for the climate in crisis. the monarch butterflies are now faced with the threat of extinction. the announcement coming yesterday from the international union of conservation of nature. this is a top wildlife monitoring group. the monarchs will now be an endangered species due to years of habitat destruction and a rise in global temperatures. new assessment finds the global population is as much as 72% lower for the past decade. many monarchs are known to migrate through santa cruz and pacific grove. >> at feel like lately i've seen a lot of them.

taking a live look. we've also seen a lot of fog. all week across the bay area you see that sun attempting to break through. >> it's fog appreciation day. >> we always do. let's check in with vianey . >> and if you are local. a fun day outside are heading to napa, the weather will be beautiful. take a look at these daytime highs. in the 80s in napa valley. and then big sur it will be in the 60s today but eventually we had into the 70s by saturday and sunday and how beautiful is this shot of lake tahoe? around 40 degrees right now and temperatures this weekend in tahoe are in the 80s. lots of sunshine through south lake tahoe. and to give you a sneak peek at the seven-day forecast including the weekend, we have upper 60s in san francisco.

by monday through wednesday, temperatures remain in the 60s. inland areas can expect that fog into tomorrow and sunday, just like san francisco, with temperatures in the 90s saturday and sunday and then we stay dry before watching monsoon southeast of us. one problem, otherwise it's friday night. west 24th has two lanes blocked at telegraph. the backup starts just before warren. some folks heading to give surface streets but sticket outcome is a short period of a slow drive and then your clear by the maze. this weekend, east 80 away from the bay bridge at gilman will have three lanes closed and that will even issue on saturday getting away from the bay bridge but even with one lane that is close because of damage there will be slowness starting at midday heading toward the richmond area. down through vallejo, west 80 will be closed overnight. there is the ultimate, highway 29. working on that six bridges project. enter niles canyon we have a

new this morning. california governor gavin newsom moving from florida to get texas when it comes to influence national politics. starting today he is running full-page ads in newspapers. they take aim at texas abortion restrictions and firearms rights and it comes as he prepares to sign a state law allowing people to sue the makers of banned weapons and what he argues is a twist on the texas abortion law. this is his recent airing of a tv ad in florida and some have speculated he may be considering a run for president in 2024. newsom was that he only wants democrats to start playing hardball with republicans . president biden continues to isolate as he is working through his bout of coronavirus. >> he posted video on social media thank he was okay. >> and i think we will see more the next few days. the president showing he is otherwise healthy and in command. it's important to not just politically but to our enemies and allies as well.
