>> it's a really big deal. >> reporter: this is prime air. a small fleet of autonomous drones that amazon says will soon deliver items right into your yard. less than an hour after you order them. >> this is essentially a mock up of what a normal backyard might look like. >> reporter: sean cassidy is amazon's director of safety, he says customers will get a gps marker to put into their yards. that tells the drone exactly where to drop the package from a height of 4 feet. how do you know if a customer has a suitable yard for delivery? >> we're actually going to go out and physically survey the yard. we're going to make sure there's a location that we can deliver our packages that is suitably set back from structures, from fence lines. >> reporter: he says drone deliveries are scheduled to launch later this year in two towns, college station, texas, and lockeford, california, where hundreds of amazon customers have signed up and will get it free with prime membership.

amazon says these electronic storks can deliver 4,500 products all under 5 pounds using special packaging that cushions the items when dropped. the company says each drone has sensors that detect any obstacle, from other aircraft, to objects and people on the ground. >> if it senses an obstacle in his path, it is not going to deliver. >> reporter: human engineers also monitor the flight and can take control in an emergency. in april, bloomberg reported some amazon employees were concerned the company was putting development speed before safety. an allegation cassidy denies. >> our mantra here is we will always do the safest thing possible, even when the regulator is not looking over our shoulders. >> reporter: amazon has already spent $2 billion on these drones. back in 2013, ceo jeff bezos told "60 minutes" they would be operational before the end of
