national park. >> this morning we have team coverage. meteorologist vianey arana is looking at air quality concerns and we would like to start with bob redell . >> reporter: good morning. we know of at least three fire departments who have sent firefighters to the oak fire in mariposa county the fire right now is 0% contained and the governor is declaring a state of emergency because of the oak fire . five are on the scene from the fremont fire department. they headed up early saturday morning. >> this is in the early stages of the fire. it is pretty active. they are most likely right in

with the fire extinguishing it or following behind as it passes because it is hot for the firefighters to be in their. >> fremont is sending a four- wheel drive engine. alameda county has sent 21 firefighters. sonoma county has also sent a team. the fire department say that they have backfilled those positions so those services back home will not be impacted. this is from the sanibel department of public safety. they are not able to send out a crew to the oak fire . they posted, quote, because of current staffing shortages, we are not able to assist. most of sent to the oak fire are expected to spend two weeks before coming home. the

oak fire is expected to impact the air quality in the bay area starting today. we will send it over to meteorologist vianey arana . >> thank you so much, bob. there is an advisory in place because of the drifting smoke of the oak fire. in mariposa county you can see it is going to move west and we expect moderate air quality. a lot of this looks like it might remain aloft and not as far down as the surface. near this area, conditions are favorable in terms of the fire. it is going to be really dry the temperatures are expected to remain extremely hot we are talking 90s through the overnight hours. humidity is less than 20%. we will talk about fire conditions coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you so much, vianey.

blayne alexander is outside the cdc in atlanta this morning with the effort to curb the spread. >> reporter: this is a rare step by the world health organization. the last time they made this declaration was in response to the covid-19 virus . this is a different type of virus and it is not a respiratory virus but transmitted through direct contact. experts say as of right now, when you look at the number of cases, they arising across the united states. the number has now nearly doubled just shy of 3000 cases. >> this will not spread as covid-19 to, but it could integrate itself into infections that we will have to deal with for some time to come.

>> reporter: this is primarily a virus found in men in the lgbtq community but this is something that is spreading to anyone. over the weekend, two children were diagnosed with confirmed cases of monkeypox . as for the vaccine, the biting and administration plans to roll out more in coming weeks. experts say those exposed or at higher risk should make it a priority to get the vaccine. the san francisco general is opening its monkeypox vaccine clinic. this is video of the long lines . the federal government is providing the hospital with 2100 vaccines. they will remain open until the new supply runs out.

redwood city leaders debate a development plan that would likely end up including new housing that they want to build a large office park on bloom crest street. it would have to include new affordable housing and also deeding 64 existing units for low income families. they said they need more units to offset the additional workers that would come for the jobs. council members tonight will hold a session. let's take a live look outside in san francisco near the bay bridge as we get started. fog is making its presence known this morning. meteorologist vianey arana is tracking what we can expect today . >> it will take longer to burn

this is "today in the bay". we are streaming live on apple tv and online. thank you so much for joining us on this monday. i am kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i am marcus washington. we want to start with the firefighters who were looking to gain control of the oak fire for any near yosemite national park. there is a lot of dry brush. >> the bigger the flames, the better chances the smoke will impact air quality. meteorologist vianey arana is here now and vianey come you can see how much of an impact it had. >> the smoke is based on where the wind is blowing. within the next couple of hours, we will start to see the hazy skies. it looks like a lot

of this might stay into the upper area but with the weather conditions they are still really dry with humidity less than 20% and temperatures expected to climb into the 90s. we're not really expecting any relief when it comes to the heat in the area. i will have a closer look at how we are doing in a few minutes but first we have to look at the roads with mike inoye . >> the headlights are on. this might be some haze as well drifting through the area. so far we have a steady flow of traffic at the bay bridge as well as the approach.

it hits close to home. the neighbors are frightened and are demanding more to be done to keep them safe. yesterday's victim was 42-year- old michael rogers. nbc bay area has learned he was walking his wife to the car to take her to work when he was shot sunday morning. you can see the victim's mother is devastated upon learning the news. she told nbc bay area the victims wife is also grazed by a bullet and said there was at least three suspects. one of them ran right across the home on cedar drive. this has not been confirmed. neighbors fear this will not be the last victim to gun violence in their community. >> i saw a woman on the ground crawling. that is all that i saw. this is not good. >> this is ridiculous. the kids

near yosemite national park. it is going to move a lot of this is smoke west and the biggest impact is going to depend upon where you are. this shows the visible smoke high above with the biggest impact to the north bay in through the sierra. take a look at how this shapes those heading into tuesday afternoon. a lot of that is going to stay aloft. it will be okay as the surface, but we do see some of this impact through the tahoe area heading into the next couple of days. the conditions are not expected to improve. these temperatures show a

numbers that we are getting this morning. we know of at least three bay area fire departments were sent to portland to the oak fire in mariposa county. here is the latest numbers. the acres burned is almost 17,000 acres. there is no containment at 10%. the governor is declaring a state of emergency and there is 2500 on the scene, including five from the fremont fire department which headed up early saturday morning. alameda county is and 21 firefighters. cinema counties sent to team. they say they have backfilled those positions so services will not be impacted at home.
